The real form of this tree cannot be perceived in this world. No one can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. But with determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weapon of detachment. Thereafter, one must seek that place from which, having gone, one never returns, and there surrender to that Supreme Personality of Godhead from whom everything began and from whom everything has extended since time immemorial.PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
It is now clearly stated that the real form of this banyan tree cannot be understood in this material world. Since the root is upwards, the extension of the real tree is at the other end. When entangled with the material expansions of the tree, one cannot see how far the tree extends, nor can one see the beginning of this tree. Yet one has to find out the cause. I am the son of my father, my father is the son of such-and-such a person, etc. By searching in this way, one comes to Brahma, who is generated by the Garbhodakasayi Visnu. Finally, in this way, when one reaches the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that is the end of research work. One has to search out that origin of this tree, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, through the association of persons who are in knowledge of that Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then by understanding one becomes gradually detached from this false reflection of reality, and by knowledge one can cut off the connection and actually become situated in the real tree.
The word asanga is very important in this connection because the attachment for sense enjoyment and lording it over the material nature is very strong. Therefore one must learn detachment by discussion of spiritual science based on authoritative scriptures, and one must hear from persons who are actually in knowledge. As a result of such discussion in the association of devotees, one comes to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then the first thing one must do is surrender to Him. The description of that place whence having gone one never returns to this false reflected tree is given here. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, is the original root from whom everything has emanated. To gain favor of that Personality of Godhead, one has only to surrender, and this is a result of performing devotional service by hearing, chanting, etc. He is the cause of the extension of the material world. This has already been explained by the Lord Himself. Aham sarvasya prabhavah: I am the origin of everything. Therefore to get out of the entanglement of this strong banyan tree of material life, one must surrender to Krsna. As soon as one surrenders unto Krsna, one becomes detached automatically from this material extension.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govind dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
Slug love
In the late afternoon in New Jersey, Srila Prabhupada
would often sit downstairs in the garden beside our bungalow. New Jersey
is known as the garden state, and the town of Long Branch was certainly
testimony to that. There were gardens everywhere, roses were blooming and
their fragrance filled the air. On one particular afternoon, Srila Prabhupada
was comfortably seated in a chair, and I was sitting on the ground beside
him. He was softly chanting japa, enjoying the fresh ocean air, mixed with
the fragrance of roses and other flowers. Occasionally he would say something
but mostly he would chant softly. Suddenly beside my sitting place I saw
a large brown slug in all its slimy ugliness. Somewhat repulsed I leaned
away from the creature. Srila Prabhupada looked at me quizzically and I
said: 'Ugh, look at this', pointing to the slimy, sliding creature. Srila
Prabhupada leaned forward and looked at the slug, his face grew full of
love and compassion, and he said to me: 'Chant to the poor creature', and
so I sat there, chanting Hare Krsna to the slimy, yet benedicted slug for
some time until he slithered away. He had incredible compassion even for
the most abominable creature. Srila Prabhupada, I can never forget the
sound of your voice when you gave me that instruction. In it, your whole
mission was encapsulated. 'Chant to the poor creature'.
Your face looked pained, full of compassion for
the poor jiva in that slimy body. You did not see the ugly slug that I
saw. You saw the soul covered in suffering, forgetful of Krsna. From that
moment my heart opened for all creatures and I glimpsed the depth of your
divine compassion. Thank you, Srila Prabhupada for sharing that compassion
with me.

The religion preached by Caitanya Mahaprabhu is universal
and not exclusive.
. . . The principle of kirtana as the future church of
the world invites all
classes of men, without distinction of caste or clan,
to the highest
cultivation of the spirit. This church, it appears, will
extend all over the
world and take the place of all sectarian churches, which
exclude outsiders
from the precincts of the mosque, church, or temple.
Lord Caitanya did not advent Himself to liberate only
a few men in India.
Rather, His main objective was to emancipate all living
entities of all
countries throughout the entire universe and to preach
the eternal religion.
Lord Caitanya states in Caitanya-bhagavata, "In every
town, country, and
village, my name will be sung." There is no doubt that
this unquestionable
order will come to pass. . . . Although there is still
no pure society of
Vaisnavas to be had, still Lord Caitanya's prophetic
words will in a few
days come true, I am sure. Why not? Nothing is absolutely
pure in the
beginning. From imperfection, purity will come about.
Very soon the unparalleled path of harinama-sankirtana
will be propagated
all over the world. . . . Oh, for that day when the fortunate
English,
French, Russian, German, and American people will take
up banners, mrdangas,
and karatalas, and will raise kirtana through their streets
and towns! When
will that day come? Oh, for the day when the fair-skinned
men, from their
side, will raise up the chanting of "Jaya Sacinandana!
Jaya Sacinandana ki
jaya!" and join with the Bengali devotees. When will
that day be? On such a
day they will say, "Our dear brothers, we have taken
shelter of Lord
Caitanya's love. Kindly embrace us." When will that day
come? That day will
witness the holy transcendental ecstasy of the Vaisnava
dharma to be the
only dharma, and all sects and religions will flow like
rivers into the
ocean of Vaisnavism. When will that day come?
The above quote of Srila Bhaktivinod is said to be from Sajjana Tosani magazine, 1895.
The Woodcutter
Nuenen: July-September, 1885
(Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum)
Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.
His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees "Congratulations," the boss said. "Go on that way!"
Very motivated for the boss' words, the woodcutter tried
harder the next day, but he only could bring 15 trees.
The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees.
Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.
"I must be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought. He went
to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand
what was going on.
"When was the last time you sharpened your axe?" the boss asked.
"Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees.
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to "sharpen the axe." In today's world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but less happy than ever. Why is that? Could it be that we have forgotten how to stay sharp? There's nothing wrong with activity and hard work. But at the same time we need to learn more and sharpen our skills.
We all need time to relax, to chant good rounds, to associate nicely together, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we don't take time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and lose our effectiveness. So start Today, Think about the ways by which you as an individual, and as part of the Vaishnava community could do your function more effectively and add a lot of value to it.
please visit our Parables page
Krishna is addressed here Achyuta. Chyuta means fallen, and achyuta means not fallen. Just like we are fallen. We are fallen conditioned souls. In this material world we have come with an enjoying spirit. Therefore we are fallen. If one keeps his position rightly, he does not fall. Otherwise he is degraded. That is fallen condition. So all the living entities within this material world, beginning from Brahmä down to the small insignificant ant, they are all fallen, fallen conditioned souls. Why they are fallen?
krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare
päshate mäyä täre jäpatiyä dhare
Fallen means when the living entities are under the clutches of this material energy. That is called fallen. Just like a man, when he is under police custody, it is to be understood that he is a criminal, he is fallen. He has fallen down from good citizenship. Similarly, we are all parts and parcels of Krishna. Mamaivämsho jiva-bhuta. So as part and parcel, our position is to live with Krishna. Just like this is my finger, part and parcel of my body. The finger must remain attached with this body. When this finger is cut off and fallen, although it is finger, it is no longer as important as it was formerly when it was attached with this body. So anyone who is not attached with the service of the Supreme Lord, he is fallen. This is the conclusion.
But Krishna is not fallen. If Krishna... Because He comes to reclaim us.
yadä yadä hi dharmasya
glänir bhavati bhärata
abhyutthänam adharmasya
tadätmänam srijämy aham [Bg. 4.7]
Krishna says that “I appear when there is discrepancies in the, I mean
to say, occupational duties of the living entities.” Dharmasya glänir
bhavati. We don’t translate dharma as “religion.” Religion in the English
dictionary, it is “a kind of faith.” Faith can be changed. But dharma is
a word which cannot be changed. If it is changed, it is to be understood
artificial. Just like the water. Water is liquid, everyone knows. But sometimes
water becomes hard, very hard, ice. So that is not the natural position
of water. Artificially, on account of excessive cold or by artificial means
the water becomes solid. But the real position of water is liquidity.
So when we are detached from the service of the Lord, this is also
unnatural, unnatural. Natural position is that we must be engaged in the
service of the Lord. That is our natural position. Therefore the Vaishnava
kavi says that krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare. When a living entity
forgets Krishna, forgets Krishna’s position... Krishna’s position... Krishna
says, bhoktäram yajna-tapasäm sarva-loka-maheshvaram: [Bhagavad
Gita. 5.29] “I am the proprietor, I am the enjoyer.” This is the Krishna’s
position. He never falls down that position. Krishna is enjoyer. He keeps
always that position. He never falls down. He never comes to the position
of being enjoyed. That is not possible. If you want to bring Krishna on
the position of being enjoyed, then you are defeated. Being enjoyed means
keeping Krishna in front, I want to get some profit of sense gratification.
That is our unnatural position. Krishna will never agree. Krishna will
never agree. Krishna cannot be enjoyed. He is always enjoyer. He is always
the proprietor. So krsna bhuliya jiva means when we forget this position
of Krishna, that He is the Supreme Enjoyer, He is the supreme proprietor...
This is called forgetfulness. As soon as I think that “I am enjoyer, I
am proprietor,” this is my fallen stage. Krishna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha
kare. Then jäpatiyä dhare, mäyä, immediately mäyä
captures.
(Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, 18th July. Bhagavad Gita 1:21-22. London )
drsta-srutabhyam yat papam
janann apy atmano 'hitam
karoti bhuyo vivasah
prayascittam atho katham
Maharaja Pariksit said, "One may know that sinful activity is injurious for him because he actually sees that a criminal is punished by the government and rebuked by people in general, and because he hears from the scriptures and learned scholars that one is thrown into hellish condition in the next life for committing sinful act. Nevertheless, in spite of such knowledge one is forced to commit sins again and again, even after performing acts of atonement. Therefore what is the value of such atonement?" ( Srimad Bhagavatam 6.1.9.)
kvacin nivartate 'bhadrat
kvacic carati tat punah
prayascittam atho 'partham
manye kunjara-saucavat
[SB 6.1.10]
He gave very good example, that "This prayascitta or legal punishment is like kunjara-saucavat." Kunjara means elephant, and sauca, taking bath. So kunjara, the elephant, dips itself into the water and takes bath very thoroughly, and as soon as it comes on the land, it takes some dust and throws over his body. The purpose is that unless one is fully convinced that "Sinful activities are very, very abominable for me," he cannot give it up. Therefore one has to cleanse his heart. That is real prayascitta. Otherwise, even being imprisoned or giving fine or suffering one cannot cease from sinful activity. So this Krsna consciousness movement is thoroughly wholesale process of cleansing the mind. (ACBSP. Srimad Bhagavatam 6.1.6 -- Nellore, January 5, 1976 )
"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras
as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that for thousands of years by advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." NEW DELHI, INDIA, December 16, 2003: The Delhi High Court on December 15 upheld the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) ban on all restaurants serving nonvegetarian food within a hundred meters of a temple. Justice S.K. Kaul observed that the ban should be enforced near all temples across the city. Six years ago, the MCD had revoked the license of a Patel Nagar restaurant located near Mahavir Mandir. The owner of this restaurant, Ashok Kumar, filed a petition against MCD the same year claiming that the organization had no right to do so, as the restaurant was being run within the legal framework laid down by the MCD. He got a stay order from the High Court in 1997 and continued running his hotel. Kumar claimed that he had been running this restaurant since 1975 and had renewed his license every year. He also claimed that the temple was built much later, in 1986. The MCD, however, claimed that the ban order had been passed in 1983. Additional MCD standing counsel O.P. Saxena said Kumar was only licensed to serve vegetarian food. Kumar's counsel contended that three other restaurants in the same area were serving nonvegetarian food. The court directed the MCD to submit a report within four weeks on these other nonvegetarian restaurants in the area.

Peta Launches a Singing Cow in India
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3333729.stm
DELHI, INDIA, December 19, 2003: An animal welfare group is urging Indians to steer clear of wearing leather with an advertising campaign featuring singing cows. "Do I make myself clear? Keep your hands off my rear!" croons a cow in the 30-second TV advert. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) hopes the lip-synched bovines will persuade Indians to boycott leather products. The Hindi-language version of the advert is dubbed by Chetan Shashital, a well-known voice artiste who has worked with such celebrities as cricket stars Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar. Peta's senior official in India Anuradha Sawhney said: "Peta's singing cows use humour to impart a serious message about how leather is seen from the animals' perspective." The cow is a sacred animal in Hinduism but many people have raised concerns over its treatment. Peta says cows are treated inhumanely by many transporters and butchers. "After they are sold, many cows and other animals are marched for days and are given neither a sip of water nor a bite to eat," says Ms Sawhney. Most are crammed in hideously overcrowded conditions in lorries." India's leather industry has previously said it has nothing to do with inhumane treatment of cows, claiming such treatment damages hides. The industry was recently estimated to employ more than 2.5 million people in India, many of whom are among the poorest members of society. Its turnover was estimated to be around $4 billion a year. Hindu nationalists in India have been at the forefront of a campaign to ban the slaughter of cows. Most Indian states prohibit the killing of cows for meat but some people allege that this is sometimes flouted. Others argue that for many communities in India, especially in the north-east and in Goa and Kerala, beef is a mainstay of their diet. This stand-off has often led to the cow being at the centre of a political controversy. Peta, which is known for its colorful animal rights campaigns, has often used Hollywood celebrities to promote its cause.

The Airwaves of Enlightenment: India's Gurus Take to Television to
Spread Their Message
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A97-2003Dec14.html
NEW DELHI, INDIA, December 19, 2003: An industrialist sat in front of the television at 7 a.m. On the television screen in front of him is one of India's best-known gurus who chanted a prayer in Sanskrit before launching into a soothing lecture on how to cope with stress. "Begin each day with a pure thought," he advised. "When you do breathing exercises, when you control your anger, when you laugh, you're actually prolonging your life." The industrialist, Rajiv Malhotra, 44, said listening to a guru each morning helps him "get peace out of this mechanical life." Malhotra is not alone. As Indians move to the cities and leave behind traditional Hindu worship, they are turning in search of spiritual sustenance. "Spirituality was always part of the Indian psyche, but now it has just found a new vehicle, 24-hour television," said Madhav Kant Mishra, executive director of the seven-month-old Sadhna religious channel. Some of the programming can be found on mainstream, India-based cable channels such as Zee TV, which claims a worldwide audience of 225 million, and Star Plus of the Murdoch media empire. Some of the most ardent viewers are educated middle-class and wealthy Indians. The pressures of economic growth and modernization have taken their toll on religious tradition as observed by Hindus as well as the country's Muslim and Christian minorities. "Indian religions are very locality-specific," said Ashis Nandy, one of India's leading social scientists. "You have family priests, family gurus, personal gods, village Gods and Goddesses which is what living Hinduism is, and that is truly in decline in urban areas. Therefore you begin to search for substitutes," Nandy said.
Ancient City Discovered off Tamil Nadu Coastline
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_482436,0008.htm
TAMIL NADU, INDIA, December 3, 2003: Located one mile off the Nagapattinam coast of Tamil Nadu, a submerged city believed to be 7,000 - 17,000 years old has been discovered. Interest in the submerged city was first sparked by English marine archaeologist Graham Hancock who explored the Poompuhar site in 2001 and declared that the city was older than Sumeria in Mesopotamia. Since then two organizations, the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department (INHD) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have collaborated on expeditions to try and piece together the city's past. Rear Admiral K.R. Srinivasan, chief hydrographer to the Indian government says, "We have been able to locate a section of the city at a depth of 7 meters and will soon start operations to recover objects that will help ascertain its past." Glenne Milne, a geologist at the University of Durham agrees with Hancock's findings and the article says, "Video footage of the site shows that the submerged city near Poompuhar was far superior to constructions found in Harappan sites." This discovery may lead to other expeditions to locate other submerged towns and shipwrecks along India's coastline.

Near-Death Experience Survivors Search for Answers
http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=594B3E59-4875-4347
COLUMBIA, MARYLAND, UNITED STATES, December 19, 2003: Some things cannot be explained! Million in the United States claim to have near-death experience. They were actually declared clinically dead - but then, they regained consciousness. Their accounts of what happened during that event are strikingly similar. William Taylor, 61, who had a near-death experience. "In 1979 I had a cardiac arrest and suddenly found myself way out in space, and I could look back and see how everything is connected to everything else," he recalls. "There's just a warmth. I could see light in everything. I still could experience and think." Mr. Taylor says he made the decision to live. "There was a very powerful being there and this being said, 'It's your choice.' Mr. Taylor says it was difficult to talk about his experience afterwards, because no one believed him and says that it's often most difficult to talk about it with family or close friends. Mr. David LaMotte, a Protestant minister with 25 years of studies in near death experience has spoken with about a dozen people who've had such an experience and has read accounts of hundreds of others. "It has meaning for everyone, everywhere, in every way," he said. "They are open spiritually to love and knowledge. And they believe that all of us are related, no matter what part of the world you're in, no matter what race or religion - we're all related in the beauty and love of the Almighty," he says. Many scientific studies are under way to what happens during near-death, and in the meantime, William Taylor has a message for those who haven't experienced it. "It would be good if people could retain an open mind and not put things down just because they don't understand it or science can't explain it," he says. Maybe that's really where we go. Maybe we don't really die. Just think about some of that."

Indian Firm Markets Vegetarian Insulin
************************************
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3126823.stm
By Zubair Ahmed
BBC correspondent in Bombay
An Indian drug company has launched what it claims is Asia's first vegetarian insulin.
8 August 2003: The new insulin is derived from yeast, as opposed to pigs or cows, as most insulin in India is at present. The company which has manufactured the drug, Wockhardt, says that this type of insulin will also avoid other viral infections such as BSE and CJD associated with insulin derived from animals.
Until now nearly 90% of the insulin available on the Indian market was derived from pigs or cows which are prescribed respectively in the Muslim and Hindu communities.
Complications?
Wockhardt says it has launched the yeast-based insulin after 10 years
of research. Company chairman Habil Khorakiwala says: "This is a technology
breakthrough not for Wockhardt but for India."
Insulin-dependent diabetes patients have to use the drug for life and for that reason a vegetarian variety is welcome in India, which has the world's largest population of diabetics.
But medical experts believe selling the new product to an existing patient will not be easy because switching over to the new insulin might lead to complications.
Most insulin products currently on sale in India are manufactured by foreign multinational companies, but are assembled and packaged in the country. This will be the first type of insulin to be manufactured inside India.
Wockhardt has priced a 10-centilitre bottle of the insulin at 130 rupees (nearly $3). Other insulin products are available at between $5 and $8 a bottle. But critics are concerned that once the patients are dependent on insulin the company might raise the price.
The World Health Organisation predicts that by 2025, the number of people suffering from the disease in India will rise from 30m to 57m.

Scrambled Curd - Great Vegetarian Dishes by Kurma dasa
This is the vegetarian counterpart to scrambled eggs. Fresh curd cheese
(panir) is scrambled with sour cream and sprinkled with black salt (which
has a distinct sulphur-like flavour), spices, and fresh herbs to produce
a stunning result. Serve at breakfast with hot gradually add the lemon
juice and toast or Puffed Fried Breads (Pooris), and Tomato Chutney.
PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME: 40 - 50 minutes
YIELD: enough for 4 - 6 persons
Ingredients:
6 litres (101/2 pints) full-cream milk
7 tablespoons (140 ml) lemon juice
2 tablespoons (40 ml) ghee or butter
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) yellow asafoetida powder
1/2 teaspoon (1 ml) turmeric
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) sweet paprika
1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) coarsely ground black pepper
3/4 cup (185 ml) cream or sour cream
2 tablespoons (40 ml) coarsely chopped fresh
coriander leaves
1 teaspoon (5 ml) Indian black salt (kale namak),
finely ground
1. Boil the milk in a heavy-based 8 - 10 litre/quart saucepan, stirring
constantly. When the foam rises, gradually add the lemon juice and reduce
the heat to low. Stir very slowly until the solid curd cheese separates
from the yellowish whey. (If separation does not occur after 1 minute,
add a little more lemon juice.
2. Pour the curds and whey into a colander lined with a triple-thickness
of cheesecloth. Press under a heavy weight for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Unwrap the curd cheese and break it into 21/2 cm (1-inch) chunks.
4. Heat the ghee or butter in a large pan or wok over moderate heat.
Saute the asafoetida and turmeric in the hot ghee. Add the pieces of curd
cheese and stir gently until the turmeric-coloured ghee is well distributed.
Increase the heat and add the paprika, salt, and pepper. When the curd
cheese is well mixed, remove from the heat.
5. Add the cream or sour cream and the black salt, stirring carefully.
Add the fresh herbs, mix well, and serve hot.

SUFGANIYOT - Hanukkah Donuts
The young State of Israel has created many of its own customs. One
is serving jelly doughnuts at Hanukkah, which are fried in oil to symbolize
the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days instead of one.
Ingredients:
1 scant tablespoon (1 package) dry yeast
4 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup lukewarm milk or warm water*
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons yogourt
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter, softened*
Apricot or strawberry preserves
Sugar
Vegetable oil for deep-frying
little corn flour and water to make paste
*Use butter and milk if serving at a milk meal.
Method:
Child: Mix together the yeast, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and the
milk. Let sit to make sure it bubbles.
Child: Sift the flour and mix it with the remaining sugar, salt, cinnamon,
yogourt, and the yeast mixture.
Adult with Child: Knead the dough until it forms a ball. Add the butter
or margarine. Knead some more, until the butter is well absorbed. Cover
with a towel and let rise overnight in the refrigerator.
Adult: Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/8 inch.
Child: Cut out the dough into 24 rounds with a juice glass, or any
object about 2 inches in diameter. Take 1/2 teaspoon of preserves and place
in center of 12 rounds. Top with the other 12. Press down at edges, sealing
with corn flour and water paste. Crimping with the thumb and second finger
is best. Let rise for about 30 minutes.
Adult: Heat 2 inches of oil to about 375°. Drop the doughnuts into
the hot oil, about 5 at a time. Turn to brown on both sides. Drain on paper
towels.
Child: Roll the doughnuts in sugar.
Makes about 12.

Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always
with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Four Wives parable:
http://www.hknet.org.nz/4wives.pps
No matter how hard my mother tries, every plant, tree or flower she has attempted to grow seems to wither and die an untimely death under her care. But she never gives up hope in trying. While she was visiting home recently, my wife nudged me and pointed to a line of new plants placed by the kitchen window.

"Well Sisters ... I'm not a Roman Catholic ...... as a matter of fact I'm a Baptist clergyman. But I just had to stop to tell you how much I admire your faith that that's going to work!!!"
One of the boys replied, 'This dog is an old neighborhood stray. We take him home with us sometimes, but only one of us can take him home. So we're having a contest: whichever one of us tells the biggest lie can take him home today.'
Of course, the Reverend was shocked. 'You boys shouldn't be having a contest telling lies!' he exclaimed. He then launched into a 10-minute sermon against lying, beginning, 'Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie?' and ending with, 'Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie.'
There was complete silence for about a minute. As the Reverend smiled with satisfaction that he'd gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh. 'All right,' he said, 'you win, give the Reverend the dog.'
She says to the clerk, "May I have 50 Christmas stamps?"
He says, "What denomination?"
She says, "God help us! Has it come to this?"
"Well, let me have 6 Catholic, 12 Presbyterian, 10 Lutheran and 22 Baptist.................."
Did you ever wonder?
We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.

Not surprisingly, the production of forged Picassos grew apace with the artist's acclaim. One needy artist, having acquired a supposed Picasso, had a friend show it to Picasso for authentication so that he could sell it. "A fake," Picasso declared. Soon thereafter, the friend acquired two more alleged Picassos. When Picasso declared both to be forgeries, the man was incredulous. "I saw you paint this last one with my own eyes!" he cried. Picasso's reply? "I can paint fake Picassos as well as anyone!"
Picasso once visited a local cabinet-maker to commission a mahogany wardrobe for his chateau in the South of France. To illustrate the design, he quickly drew a sketch showing its shape and dimensions, handing it to the craftsman. "How much will it cost?" Picasso asked. "Nothing," the cabinet-maker replied. "Just sign the sketch."
Many visitors to Picasso's home in the south of France were astonished to find that its walls boasted none of his own works. "Why is that, Pablo?" someone once asked. "Don't you like them?" "On the contrary - I like them very much," the painter replied. "It's just that I can't afford them."
One day during World War II, Pablo Picasso was visited by the German Gestapo in his apartment in Nazi-occupied Paris. One of his unwelcome visitors, having noticed a picture of Guernica (his depiction of the destruction of the Basque capital by German planes during the Spanish Civil War) on a table, asked, "Did you do that?" "No," Picasso replied. "You did."

Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up since the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, and Mr.Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. He sued the homeowner's insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish.
The jury agreed to the tune of $500,000.
Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. The award was less than sought because the jury felt the dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr. Williams who was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.
The officer hauled him into court. After the driver had paid his fine, the judge reproved him, for insulting the police officer.
"Then I mustn't call a policeman an ass?" he said.
"Certainly not," said the judge. "You must not insult the police."
"But you wouldn't mind if I called an ass a policeman, would you?"
"Why, no," smiled the judge. "If it gives you satisfaction, go right ahead."
The motorist turned to the arresting officer and said, "Good-day, policeman."
"What is the big brass gong and hammer for?" one of his friends asked.
"That's the talking clock", the man replied, with a grin. "Let me show you how it works!"
And with that, he gave the gong an ear-shattering pound with the hammer.
Suddenly someone screamed from the other side of the wall,
"KNOCK IT OFF, YOU JERKS! IT'S 2 AM!"
"Outstanding," Fred replied. "They taught us all the latest psychological techniques: visualization, association. It was great."
"Wow! What was the name of the clinic?"
Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn't remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, "What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?"
"You mean a rose?"
"Yes, that's it!" He turned to his wife, "Rose, what was the name of that memory clinic?"
