Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita chapter: 17th - The Divisions of Faith TEXT 1

                              arjuna uvaca
                        ye sastra-vidhim utsrjya
                         yajante sraddhayanvitah
                        tesam nistha tu ka krsna
                         sattvam aho rajas tamah

WORD FOR WORD
   arjunah uvaca--Arjuna said; ye--those who; sastra-vidhim--the regulations of scripture; utsrjya--giving up; yajante--worship; sraddhaya--full faith; anvitah--possessed of; tesam--of them; nistha--the faith; tu--but; ka--what; krsna--O Krsna; sattvam--in goodness; aho--or else; rajah--in passion; tamah--in ignorance.

TRANSLATION
   Arjuna inquired: O Krsna, what is the situation of those who do not follow the principles of scripture but worship according to their own imagination? Are they in goodness, in passion or in ignorance?

PURPORT by His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
   In the Fourth Chapter, thirty-ninth verse, it is said that a person faithful to a particular type of worship gradually becomes elevated to the stage of knowledge and attains the highest perfectional stage of peace and prosperity. In the Sixteenth Chapter, it is concluded that one who does not follow the principles laid down in the scriptures is called an asura, demon, and one who follows the scriptural injunctions faithfully is called a deva, or demigod. Now, if one, with faith, follows some rules which are not mentioned in the scriptural injunctions, what is his position? This doubt of Arjuna's is to be cleared by Krsna. Are those who create some sort of God by selecting a human being and placing their faith in him worshiping in goodness, passion or ignorance? Do such persons attain the perfectional stage of life? Is it possible for them to be situated in real knowledge and elevate themselves to the highest perfectional stage? Do those who do not follow the rules and regulations of the scriptures but who have faith in something and worship gods and demigods and men attain success in their effort? Arjuna is putting these questions to Krsna.

(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter, but still nectar...)

Balanced temple program

In a letter of June 12, 1974, to Sri Govinda dasa in Chicago, Srila Prabhupada stressed book distribution and stated that other programs should be minimized. After this letter had been distributed to various temples, several devotees wrote to Prabhupada asking whether they should actually cut back on other existing programs like Deity worship and other outside kinds of preaching. Prabhupada replies stressed the absolute nature of any Krsna consciousness service.
"The thing is we should have a little common sense in all activities. The example can be given that women by nature do not forget to dress very nicely although always engaged in household affairs. Deity worship or lecturing in the colleges is just as important as book distribution. So these things must be done very nicely, and at the same time, book distribution should be done. Not that we should do one thing at the sacrifice of another. That requires a little common sense. Factually, we should be engaged twenty-four hours in Krsna's service and everything should be done very nicely and perfectly."

"Regarding your question about the controversial talks going on, this kind of talk is not befitting my advanced students. This is childish. In Krsna's service, there is no inferior and superior. Deity worship is just as important as book distribution. It is not material...You should understand the importance of each and every item of devotional service. Do not make any misunderstanding by devaluating any of the spiritual activities...One who distinguishes a particular type of service as inferior or superior, he does not know the value of devotional service. It is all transcendental. Whatever item is suitable, that is accepted as very elevated. Just like Maharaja Pariksit. He simply listened to Sukadeva Gosvami. That is sravanam...So any devotee executing any one of the nine items is transcendentally glorious. One devotee may be proud that his process of service is best. That is not inglorious. This is called transcendental competition. Every one should feel proud of his particular type of devotional service. But that does not mean that other types of service are inferior. Everyone should feel proud of becoming a sincere servant of Krsna, but the pure devotee never minimizes the importance of other devotees. Krsna is the enjoyer of varieties of service. It is not stuck up with any particular type of service."

Harikesa: Translation: "Prahlada Maharaja continued to speak: My dear friends born of demon families, the happiness which is perceived with reference to the senses can be obtained in any form of life according to one's past fruitive activities. Such happiness is automatically obtained, as sometimes we obtain distresses without any endeavor."

Prabhupada:

sukham aindriyakam daitya
deha-yogena dehinam
sarvatra labhyate daivad
yatha duhkham ayatnatah
 [SB 7.6.3]

Now Prahlada Maharaja in the previous verses explained that durlabham manusam janma: "This human form of life is durlabham, very rarely gotten." It is not so easy. There are many rascals, they say that once you come to the human form of life there is no more degradation. That is rascaldom. When Krsna says that dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara tatha dehantaram-praptir [Bg. 2.13], He says that "As you have changed bodies, similarly, at the end also you'll have to change the body." He never says that "You'll get again human body." Never says. Tatha dehantara-praptir: "Another form of life." That another form may be... There are 8,400,000 forms. So "another form" means any one of them. There is no guarantee. You cannot say that "Now I have got human form of... Again, in the next life, I also get human..." No. You can be... The evidence is Bharata Maharaja. He was king, emperor, very exalted position in the human form of life, but next life he got the life of a deer. This is the evidence. So how you can say that next life will be human life? No. That's not possible. According to your karma, karmana daiva-netrena [SB 3.31.1], if you are acting like human being, then there is chance of getting human life. And if you are acting like a dog, then you must get the body of a dog. Karmana daiva-netrena. It depends on your karma. If you simply dress like a human being and act like a dog, then you'll get a dog's body. Krsna will give you the facility. Mayaya, (sic) yantra-rudhena mayaya. Maya.

In the Bhagavad-gita it is said that this body is just like a machine, motorcar. Suppose you have got now a very nice motorcar, Rolls Royce car. So somehow or other, your car is lost. The next car, is it any guarantee that you will get Rolls Royce car? No. You'll get a car as you pay for. That's all. If you can pay for a Rolls Royce car, then you can get. Or any dress. Suppose you have got now very costly dress. Now your dress is torn, you have to change the dress, but is there any guarantee that you'll get the same type of dress? No. You'll get a dress as you pay for it. It's a common sense. Similarly, if you act like a demigod, you will get the body of a demigod. If we act like ordinary human being, then you get the body of a human being. If you act like a dog, then you get the body of a dog. And if you act like a devotee, you go back to home, back to Godhead. This is the process.

Desiring to understand the glory of Radharani's love, the wonderful qualities in Him that She alone relishes through Her love, and the happiness She feels when She realizes the sweetness of His love, the Supreme Lord Hari, richly endowed with Her emotions, appeared from the womb of Srimati Saci-devi, as the moon appeared from the ocean. [Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (Adi-lila 1.6)]

atha cittam samadhatum
na saknosi mayi sthiram
abhyasa-yogena tato
mam icchaptum dhananjaya

   My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me spontaneously without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga. In this way develop a desire to attain Me. (Bhagavad Gita 12:9.)

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
   In this verse, two different processes of bhakti-yoga are indicated. The first applies to one who has actually developed an attachment for Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by transcendental love. And the other is for one who has not developed an attachment for the Supreme Person by transcendental love. For this second class there are different prescribed rules and regulations one can follow to be ultimately elevated to the stage of attachment to Krsna.

   Bhakti-yoga is the purification of the senses. At the present moment in material existence the senses are always impure, being engaged in sense gratification. But by the practice of bhakti-yoga these senses can become purified, and in the purified state they come directly in contact with the Supreme Lord. In this material existence, I may be engaged in some service to some master, but I don't really lovingly serve my master. I simply serve to get some money. And the master also is not in love; he takes service from me and pays me. So there is no question of love. But for spiritual life, one must be elevated to the pure stage of love. That stage of love can be achieved by practice of devotional service, performed with the present senses.

   This love of God is now in a dormant state in everyone's heart. And, there, love of God is manifested in different ways, but it is contaminated by material association. Now the heart has to be purified of the material association, and that dormant, natural love for Krsna has to be revived. That is the whole process.

   To practice the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga one should, under the guidance of an expert spiritual master, follow certain principles: one should rise early in the morning, take bath, enter the temple and offer prayers and chant Hare Krsna, then collect flowers to offer to the Deity, cook foodstuffs to offer to the Deity, take prasadam, and so on. There are various rules and regulations which one should follow. And one should constantly hear Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam from pure devotees. This practice can help anyone rise to the level of love of God, and then he is sure of his progress into the spiritual kingdom of God. This practice of bhakti-yoga, under the rules and regulations, with the direction of a spiritual master, will surely bring one to the stage of love of God.

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead is situated in pure goodness [suddha-sattva], and therefore He is eka-varna-the omkara [pranava]. Because the Lord is beyond the cosmic manifestation, which is considered to be darkness, He is not visible to material eyes. Nonetheless, He is not separated from us by time or space, but is present everywhere. Seated on His carrier, Garuda, He is worshiped by means of mystical yogic power by those who have achieved freedom from agitation. Let us all offer our respectful obeisances unto Him." (Srimad Bhagavatam 8.5.29.)

Faith directed toward spiritual life is in the mode of goodness, faith rooted in fruitive work is in the mode of passion, faith residing in irreligious activities is in the mode of ignorance, but faith in My devotional service is purely transcendental. (Srimad Bhagavatam 11:25:27.)

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

Filmmaker Philippe Auliac, one of France's foremost film directors, recently produced his latest documentary film "Chant and Be Happy". Narrated by Ms. Laurence Geslin, a documentary maker trained in visual arts and the history of art, the film was edited by Julien Doublet and Celine Esteve.

Auliac has been a supporter of the Hare Krishna movement for a long time, and has a good relationship with devotees in France. He previously made the well-known film of George Harrison, "All things must pass". Auliac has just finished the final director's cut of "Chant and Be Happy"; four extracts of this 70-minute full-length film are available for downloading at

Philippe Auliac will premiere his film Sunday November 16 at the Hare Krishna Temple, 263 Duluth, Montreal, Canada. Devotees and guests are invited to be among the first to see this full-length film, to meet the director and to pose questions. Everyone is welcome. It has not yet been shown on television but broadcasting sales are expected.

Genevieve Brault, a journalist from the program "Culture Shock" hosted by Gregory Charles, will also be present for the film premiere. She is coming to interview Auliac for Canadian television.

After the film presentation, devotees will chant the Mahamantra and then hear the famous John Lennon-Paul McCartney song "All you need is love". Film viewers will hear and appreciate George Harrison, who greatly helped to spread the Krishna consciousness message. Auliac began work on this great project of "Chant and Be Happy" at Harrison's request. Harrison wanted a major film to influence the mass of people throughout the world.

This film shows another side of devotional life -- one new to most people. Everyone has seen devotees in traditional costume but the film depicts them practicing Krishna consciousness without having to live in a temple. Indeed, few people are aware that people -- without having to leave their employment or current occupations -- can freely participate in Krishna consciousness.

Philippe Auliac wanted his film to show another image of the Krishna devotees. He has shown that they are ordinary people with jobs, children, houses, etc., but who have added Krishna to their everyday lives. This great difference does not prevent devotees from living their daily lives and from developing a higher consciousness.

The film closes on this thought: "Is it possible that Krishna devotees have a key to happiness?" The answer is yes; studying Krishna consciousness philosophy and, of course, putting it into practice, can indeed bring happiness. This engaging film will help viewers to become aware of the spiritual dimension of life.

Those who miss the film premiere will have another opportunity to view the film, first on French-language television in Canada, and later when it is rebroadcast outside Quebec in an English-language version, still being finalised.

The evening will finish with a great vegetarian feast. Bring your friends.

Muslim-Hindu Peace Plan

EDITORIAL, Oct 5 (VNN) — The Muslim-Hindu Peace Plan based on the teachings of Srila Prabhupada

The desire to prevent World War III and bring peace to the world is most likely the inner mood of most of us today. To do that we need to come to a common understanding of religious terminology and beliefs.

For example most of us have no idea that the name Allah comes from the Hebrew letter Alef, our A, in the English alphabet.

This simple point contains enough information for every Christian, Jew and Hindu to accept Allah as a name of God.

I will explain further, in the "Old Testament" which Jewish people call the 5 books of Moses, God explains that He is the beginning to the end. This same idea is expressed in the New Testament. Revelation 22:13, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. This English usage of Alpha is based on the Hebrew Alef. Also in the Hindu (Vedic) scripture, Bagavad Gita, Krishna says "of letters I am A."

Has God sent so many messengers, each with a different message? Is He sitting in the Garden of Eden laughing at us? I think not! We have twisted His message based on our own material desire, creating our own Hell on Earth.

The objection we find from our Muslim brothers and sisters today, comes from the desire to bring the word back to God and His ways. We find this mood in our Jewish-Christian tradition also. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

This lack of disciple, this foolish rush of insane materialism is what every deeply religious person objects to, no matter which faith he or she is coming from. We can take good example from our Amish brothers and Hindu (Vedic) sages.

An error of modern society and religion is to identify the body as the self. The Bhagavad-Gita clearly explains that we should see and accept the spiritual essence (the soul) of each living being as spiritually equal. There it is said, "The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle Brahman, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcast]." [Bagavad Gita 5.18]

How does the learned sage see every living entity with equal vision? He sees the spirit soul within the heart of each of God's creations. He understands that although living forms may appear different, those appearances are only the external coverings of the soul, and that spiritually we are all equal.

A careful analysis shows that all problems result from our first mistake of identifying the body as the self. If we identify ourselves by race, religion and ethnic group we will then suffer or enjoy the results of that identity, but the fact is we are spiritually equal and the bodily identity that we accept is both temporary and insignificant compared to our eternal spiritual identity. We suffer due to birth, disease, old age and death; we need not identify with the body, which is being afflicted by these difficulties.

If everyone understood and acted on the level of the soul rather than the body, the world's problems would practically cease. Understanding the difference between matter and spirit, and that God is the controller of all things, is the essence of knowledge.

It is natural that when we become overwhelmed by difficulties, we become aware of our dependence on God.

Unfortunately, due to our deep attachment to materialism, we are drawn to perceive religion in much the same manner, as we perceive ordinary social activities. That is, we become attached to identifying with the external or social side of religion, while we forget its essence-loving service to God.

Our modern use of the word religion, expresses an external alterable faith, while the Sanskrit world dharma, implies an internal or essential eternal relationship with God. Our religion or faith can change but the soul's relationship with God is eternal. For example, I may claim that I am a Christian today, but I may adopt the practices of a Hindu or of a Jew tomorrow. However, whatever faith you my follow, the essence of that faith is loving service to God.

We must understand that our Muslim brothers and sisters who have come to understand the true message of Allah accept all of us as children of God based on this verse from the Koran.

2.62: Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.

We should also understand that as a nation, nay as a human race if we do not come to follow God's laws and develop our love for Him and His creation, our future is all to clear.

For Our Lord says: Isaiah 46: I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.

Heritage Plus - An Architectural Wonder

The red sandstone temple of Govindadeva, constructed in the sixteenth century by Mansimha and standing on a hill in the midst of Vrindavan, is the largest single-structure temple ever built. A visitor gets impressed with the strength of its massive exterior and the flying, vaulted spaces of its interior.

It has three aligned spaces: garbhagriha (the new sanctum sanctorum), jagamohana (platform) and mandapa (hall), but in no case have all the three sections survived destruction.

The site of Govindadeva is a mound on which an image of Yogamaya had been found. Here Rupa Goswami discovered the image of Govindadeva, and shortly afterwards, a simple temple was built to house it. The mound itself has been visualised as the site of vraja yogapitha—the meeting place of Radha and Krishna, and the pericarp of the lotus mapped onto the land of Vraja has also been conceived as a turtle’s back. The main building faces east, its length running from east to west. There is a small, basically square, shrine on either side, surrounding the garbhagriha and dedicated to Vrinda Devi, and the southern one to Yogamaya. A wall along the northern side surrounds the spacious and very comfortable priests’ quarters, toilets, and a well. In the north-west corner stood the original temple built for Govindadeva.

On the south side of Govindadeva temple stood two chhatris (pavilions) and a kund (tank); there was plenty of space for gardens all around.

The temple was an enormous enterprise that took some 14 years for completion. There is an inscription on the north side of the temple that tells the names of some of the most important people involved in the construction.

It was built according to the Mughal system of masonry construction. The load-bearing piers and walls were built of sandstone slabs that penetrated into or even all the way through the pier or wall, alternating with carefully packed rubble and mortar, faced with sandstone blocks. The pattern of these layers forms the external string courses that create the chief decorative motif of this great temple.

Its plan, which consists of the main temple and the two subsidiary shrines of Vrindadevi and Yogamaya, reflects the need for a new type of ritual space, particularly for the newly adopted Rasalila performances. As in other temples of the Vrindavan group, there are three distinct sections to the main shrine. The most striking is the large hall laid out in the form of a sarvatobhadra, or Greek cross, about 35½ metres long and 8 metres wide, with a transverse arm of nearly the same dimensions. The garbhagriha was probably octagonal in plan.

The great hall was defined by eight massive piers, and the space between the piers was held in filled, non-load-bearing walls.

The temple stands on a plinth about five feet (1.5 metres) high. Its various courses of sandstone are accentuated by distinctions between each level of stone, as to how far it projects from the building face, and the way its edge is moulded. The horizontal striations thus created, each of which is maintained for the whole circumference of the exterior, form virtually the only embellishment of the exterior elevation. The jagamohana has a balcony with a window facing light from outside.

When F.S. Growse, the Joint Magistrate of Mathura (1872-1878), undertook major repairs of Govindadeva with the help of skilled craftsmen, he did his work without either research or documentation. As a result, in many cases it is impossible to tell what is original and what was ‘growsed’. Besides completely repairing the roof and removing the wall, he reconstructed the external doorways of the jagamohana and the side shrines, and built plain stairways up to them. In addition, he ‘rebuilt’ a portion of the destroyed garbhagriha with a plain masonry wall and moved a chhatri (built during Shah Jahan’s rule) from the adjoining garden to the sacred space of the original garbhagriha.

The chronological signifi-cance of this temple is attested by the fact that the legendary Mirabai visited Vrindavan in 1538-1539, before proceeding on a pilgrimage to Dwaraka. She is recorded to have seen Govindadeva, and has mentioned him as the three most important deities of Vrindavan, the other two being Sri Madanmohan and Sri Banke Bihari. Her reference:

“O body! I am fascinated by
Vrindavan
Where, in every house, tulsi is
planted
and Thakurji (Krishna) is worshipped,
and regular darshan of Sri Govindadeva is available.”

Krishnadasa Kaviraja, a seventeenth-century Vaishnava poet, describes the architectural beauty and devotional significance of this temple in his following shloka:

“On the beautiful banks of the Yamuna, on a raised mount with slopes on all four sides, like a turtleback, stands the temple of Govinda. On that meeting place of Radha and Krishna, the yogapitha, stands the beautiful stone temple like a pericarp, surrounded by groves of trees like petals and rows of golden plantain-like pistles. On the beautiful banks of the Yamuna is the thousand-petalled lotus, the Vrindavan.”

The chronological significance of this temple is attested by the fact that the legendary Mirabai visited Vrindavan in 1538-1539, before proceeding on a pilgrimage to Dwaraka

Czechoslavakia Liberalizes Church and Religious Society Registration Czech News Agency (CTK)

PRAGUE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, March 18, 2004: This news item was mostly about the decision of the Culture Ministry in Czechoslovakia to accept a proposal to register the Centre of Muslim Communities. But the report added that the Czech Republic registered 25 churches and religious societies, four of which -- the Christian Societies, the Community of Christians, Hindu and the Hare Krishna movement -- were registered under the new law in 2002. Prior to this time, Hindus had difficulty in setting up organizations in the country.

MUMBAI, INDIA, March 13, 2004: International media coverage and the celebrities descending on the 2001 Kumbh Mela in Allahabad for their holy dip marked a new opportunity for religious travel tours. Religious tourism, until lately the domain of small-time tour operators, is fast turning into a lucrative market for travel companies. A visit to Vaishnodevi, for example, which attracts more than 4.5 million pilgrims every year, need not mean rickety buses or eating at road-side dhabas anymore as travel companies have moved big-time into organizing religious tours. Says Ajay Seth, general manager of the Bharat Dekho division, Cox and Kings, "We went into it in a major way during the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in 2001. The main target then was the international media and foreign tourists. We provided deluxe accommodation for them -- tents with plush interiors. The religious tourism sector is expected to grow by almost 25 percent this year." Seth adds that more and more people are looking at pilgrimage trips, not from a religious angle but as a spiritual break from their stressful lives. "Another reason for the popularity of religious tourism is the fact that the entire family can visit these places." "As of now, we are targeting upmarket Indians and overseas tourists for whom safety, comfort and luxury are top priorities, adds Seth."

Looking at the world's history we find that many great scholars, philosophers, scientists, artists, poets, writers and religious leaders of the world were purely vegetarian. The vegetarian diet enlightened their minds and blessed them with noble qualities of tolerance, compassion, love and non-violence.

Despite impressive progress in science and technology, the world is faced with a crisis of unremitting violence in the shape of wars, terrorism, murder, vandalism, child abuse, and abortion. More than 140 wars have been fought since the United Nations was formed in 1945, and in America alone 20,000 are murdered each year. With social and political solutions conspicuously failing, perhaps it's time to analyze the problem from a different perspective: the law of karma. The callous and brutal slaughter of countless helpless animals must be considered as a powerful causative factor in this wave of violence that can't be checked.

Meat-eating played a role in many of the wars during the age of European colonial expansion. The spice trade with India and other countries of the East was an object of great contention. Europeans subsisted on a diet of meat preserved with salt. In order to disguise and vary the monotonous and unpleasant taste of their food, they eagerly purchased vast quantities of spices. So huge were the fortunes to be made in the spice trade that governments and merchants did not hesitate to use arms to secure sources. The understanding that meat-eating leads to war has influenced many of today's most thoughtful people to become vegetarians, as it had influenced great thinkers in the past.

In this age of Kali the propensity for mercy is almost nil. Consequently there is always fighting of wars between men and nations. Men do not understand that because they unrestrictedly kill so many animals, they must also be slaughtered like animals in big wars (karma). This is very much evident in the Western countries. In the West slaughterhouses are maintained without restriction, and therefore every fifth or tenth year there is a big war in which countless people are slaughtered even more cruelly than animals. Sometimes during war, soldiers keep their enemies in concentration camps and kill them in very cruel ways. These are reactions brought about by unrestricted animal-killing in the slaughterhouses and by hunters in the forest.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada introduced vegetarianism in the Western world on a very large scale in the '60s and '70s, influencing the lives of millions towards purity and compassion. He gives a further explanation why it is sinful to kill animals. "All living entities have to fulfill a certain duration for being encaged in a particular type of material body. They have to finish the duration allotted in a particular body before being promoted or evolved to another body. Killing an animal or any other living being simply places an impediment in the way of his completing his term of imprisonment in a certain body. One should therefore not kill bodies for one's sense gratification, for this will implicate one in sinful activity."

The Weakest Link

Yes, there are so many issues of concern in today's world; politics, religion, famine, wars, terrorism, crime, natural disasters, personal tragedies, financial concerns, health and sanity, the list seems to increase endlessly... Yet there is one problem that stands way above all others. Why? Because this problem is the major root cause of all problems we face in this world. Before I attempt to reveal what it is, and you'll be surprised how obvious and yet evasive this fact of life can be, please allow me to tell you a relevant story.

Once there was a great teacher or guru who came from a very prestigious line of masters. All his students were hailing from aristocratic families with the nobility of blood lineage. One day an unknown and poorly dressed youth approached the master and requested that he become his student. Upon seeing him, the other students mocked him and considered his request foolish and a waste of time. The master however, saw something in this boy and asked what his family line, or gotra, was. The boy had no idea and this added further to the mocking of the on-looking students, who by now were laughing hysterically at his audacious request. Still the master asked him to go home and find out what his gotra was.

Later, the boy approached his mother and asked about his father's hereditary descent. His mother, who was a prostitute by profession had no idea since she had known so many men that she didn't even know who the boy's father was. Disappointed and dejected, the boy returned to the ashram and in the presence of all the students, told the master the honest truth that he had no idea what his gotra was due to the fact that his mother had known many men and couldn't ascertain the identity of his father. This also meant he was an illegitimate child and was automatically unqualified to even approach the master to be educated and trained in the higher subject matters, what to speak of receiving them. By now the students were openly ridiculing the boy and throwing insult after insult upon him.

At this point the master raised his voice above the crowd, thus quieting them and announced that this boy is actually qualified to become not only his student, but also his best student and he will immediately accept him without any need for further qualifications. This completely stunned the whole assembly into silence and no one could faintly understand why their great master would accept such a low class person, who was totally unqualified and with no aristocratic background as his students. Then one of the older students asked the master to please explain why he'd accepted this urchin so easily.

The master replied: "Because he has spoken the truth without any fear or duplicity and is most simple in character, I deem him a thousand times more qualified than all of you put together! He shall be my most brilliant student and is a true brahmana, possessing a rare gem in the form of the quality of 'arjavam' or nonduplicity. All of you are coming from highly graded lineages, yet you are still duplicitous and proud and with many prejudices. He has already passed through all the stages of material and spiritual development in previous lives and is now fit to become your master"!

In this way the boy was accepted by the master, Gautama Rsi and he became a great master himself, thus continuing the parampara line to modern times. Simultaneously the pride of all the aristocratic students was broken and they learned this all-important quality of a brahmana from their new peer, the quality of arjavam or simplicity. I hope you enjoyed this true story from the Vedic smrti. I have always found it truly enlightening and a cutting-edge piece of Vedic history.

So now I ask you the question: What is that major problem we all face that none of us can actually see, even though it's constantly right there in our face 24 hours a day for the whole duration of our lives? Come on think! No, no, no... don't read further to find out from me! You know it well, because it's right there in your heart, in all our hearts and we've been hiding it, and hiding from it for millions and millions of lifetimes.

Yes, you've guessed it, it's our age old friend... Mr Hypocrisy! Hurrah, hurrah! The very opposite of arjavam or simplicity. And this is the specific age of hypocrisy... Kali Yuga... surprise, surprise! Well, well, well and another well as well! So this is it! This is where the buck stops dear reader. This is the point of no return! If there was any other way around this I'd go there, but this is the actual fact. Because we are 99% hypocrites in this world, meaning duplicitous, meaning liars, meaning not really being what we pose ourselves to be, meaning we are actually hiding from the truth rather than searching for the truth... what to speak of the Absolute Truth! Due to this fault in our character, we tend to lose sight of the goal and get side-tracked into the side benefits which are only there to help us achieve the real goal. The main quality that enables one to achieve the goal of life, 'prema pumartha mahan' is karunika and we cannot develop that exalted quality unless we are situated in arjavam.

In the Bg. 18.42 Lord Krishna describes some of the prominent qualities of a brahmana who's described in Srimad Bhagavatam as the head of the body of the social order. Ksatriyas are the arms, vaisyas the stomach, sudras are the legs that work for the rest of the body. In a famous S.B. lecture in Los Angeles in January 1975, Srila Prabhupada stresses the importance of the head in the social body. Quote: "We can live without arms, legs and even stomach, but when the head is removed everything is finished"!

The verse 1:16:16 discusses the government of Maharaja Yuddisthira and how he had a consulting board of highly qualified brahmanas with whom his executive governmental board would take all guidance from for practical application in the kingdom or country. These brahamans were great souls and were blessed with all auspicious attributes, of which arjavam was prominent.

The transliteration of 'arjavam' in the Gita verse is 'honesty'. But this honesty goes much deeper than the superficial honesty we know and deal with on a practical daily basis. The type of honesty referred to in this word is that honesty which is of the highest kind and completely free from any duplicity. Just like our young boy in the story, his honesty was a painfully open honesty and an honesty totally free from mundane pratistha.

His motives were pure and clear, he had no hidden agenda for mundane profiteering, fame or seeking a powerful and influential position. He was open and truthful regarding his obvious disqualifications. Yet hidden within his apparent unqualified condition was the jewel of the highest qualification, and because Gautama Muni was already qualified in this way, he could immediately see it and therefore could understand the exalted position of the boy. In Nectar of Devotion, Srila Prabhupada says that a pure devotee can easily see another pure devotee and this particular quality of arjavam is the essence of that vision.

In the past, there are some members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in leadership positions who have exhibited this brilliant quality of arjavam by honestly admitting their obvious disqualifications as leaders, sannyasis or initiating spiritual masters. Unfortunately, due to the social climate in the society at the time, their honesty was grossly misunderstood and they became objects of criticism by other senior and even junior members.

This is indeed unfortunate, as such reaction by seniors automatically sets a precedent for the younger members to follow. Thus a culture of 'cover up consciousness' becomes the norm and the ability to admit one's failings becomes increasingly abnormal. This creates a disastrous situation where it becomes ever more difficult to cultivate the essential brahminical quality of arjavam. The results of this weakness will be noted in the historical accolades of ISKCON's rise and fall and eventual rise to glorious heights.

I'll finish up on this point and hope that you come to your own practical conclusions regarding this topic of our own weakest link.

Of all the compelling reasons to quit smoking, this one should make pet lovers sit up and take notice: there's ample scientific evidence to suggest that secondhand cigarette smoke can cause cancer in companion animals.

And your furry friends don't just inhale smoke; the smoke particles are also trapped in their fur and ingested when they groom themselves with their tongues.

West Village resident Cynthia Garnant has been smoking for 25 years, and currently goes through a pack of Now 100s a day.

She and her non-smoking husband, Greg, share four cats: Mahogany, Barney, Tig, and Titania. And she has no immediate plans to kick her longstanding habit.

None of the couple's cats has displayed smoke-related health issues, Garnant says. "Mahogany has kidney problems and Barney's thyroid levels are elevated," she points out, "but these are symptoms of age, not secondhand smoke."

Still, she adds, "I smoke only in the living room, where we have three air filters. I never smoke in the bedroom, which is the cats' favorite place to hang out."

A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different study published in the same journal showed that long-nosed dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers.

And in yet another study, vets from Tufts University found that cats whose owners smoked were three times as likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer.

So - short of kicking the habit - Garnant and her husband take three of the cats to the vet at least twice a year for checkups; the fourth, Barney, goes every three months.

"All of our cats are rescues," Garnant concludes. "If they had the choice between being living in this apartment and staying at a shelter, where they could possibly be put to sleep, I think they'd choose the first option."

World's Biggest Fire Ceremony Planned for Allahabad
News Report

ALLAHABAD, INDIA, February 2, 2004: The world's biggest Mahayagna with 100,008 yagna kunds (fire altars) will be held at Sangam (the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers, where the Kumbha Mela is held) from January 26 to February 6. The religious event would attract as many as 100 top politicians and ministers from different political outfits and States besides delegates from foreign countries. The occasion would be Laksh Astottar (100,008) Kundiya Shri Seetaram Mahayagna organized by Swami Anjani Nandan Das Mission near Triveni Sangam from Basant Panchami (January 26) to Maghi Purnima (February 6) in 2004. During the 12-day program nearly one million devotees, followers and people will participate. Along with the Nepal king and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, ministers and representatives from Mauritius, Indonesia, Thailand and other countries are also likely to participate, said Rastriya Sant Shri 1008 Swami Anjani Nanda Dasji on Saturday.

The preparation for the Mahayagna is in full swing. Ten tractors were leveling the ground near railway bridge, New Jhunsi, in the mela area. Nearly 100 houses at New Jhunsi and scores of houses at Bharadwajpuram (Allahpur) would be voluntarily provided by the people to accommodate the delegates, he said and added that Sant Gram was being constructed to house the saints, belonging to different sects, who will be arriving in January.

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE, March 17, 2004: Even after five years, Christy Pugh has no trouble sticking to her vegetarian regimen. The secret to her success? Eating meat. Pugh is one of a growing number of part-time vegetarians whose loose adherence to the meat-free diet is transforming a decades-old movement and the industry that feeds it, says this New York Times article. These so-called "flexitarians" -- a term voted most useful word of 2003 by the American Dialect Society -- are motivated less by animal rights than by a growing body of medical data that suggests health benefits from eating more vegetarian foods. (In case you're wondering, "Hindu Press International - Hinduism Today" doesn't advocate the concept as a permanent diet, but considers any reduction in meat eating as good, and likely a stage on the way to becoming a true vegetarian.)

In recent years the market for vegetarian friendly foods has exploded, with items such as soy milk and veggie burgers showing up in mainstream groceries and fast food restaurants. But even the diet's activists say that growth can't be attributed to committed vegetarians, who are estimated at about 3 percent of the adult U.S. population, or about 5.7 million people never eating meat, poultry or seafood. Though flexitarian headcounts are imprecise, Charles Stahler, codirector of the Baltimore-based Vegetarian Resource Group, estimates roughly 30 percent to 40 percent of the population at least occasionally seeks out vegetarian meals. Suzanne Havala Hobbs, a health policy professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, credits the growth of flexitarianism to the nation's better understanding of the diet-disease connection. "Whether you make a commitment to eating strictly vegetarian or not, cutting back your dependence on meat is something most people acknowledge they know they should do," she said.

HYDERABAD, INDIA, March 4, 2004: The Vedic Friends Association Northeast India recently toured the area to "Give talks on encouraging people to preserve their culture and resist the pressure from Christian groups to give up their own traditions and convert to Christianity." The trip began with a seminar in Hyderabad called "Global Hinduism in the New Millennium." Hosted by Swami Dayanada Saraswati, well-known speakers such as Dr. Shankar Tattvavadi, David Frawley (Vamadev Shastri), Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandan dasa ACBSP), Jeffrey Armstrong, along with Isvara dasa (Iskcon), Basu Ghosh dasa (ACBSP TP Baroda), Parama Karuna devi (Iskcon), S. D. Youngwolf, Vrindavana Parker (Iskcon & Vedic Culture list), and K. S. Sudarshanji graced the event. The article says, "S.D. Recently during a conversation with Mohana Vilasa Prabhu of New Govardhana, an ISKCON temple in San Diego, he told us how it had never been so cold in San Diego as in recent weeks; that it appears the seasons are losing their characteristics and the weather is going to extremes. When told how the extreme heat had killed thousands in Europe last summer, he concluded that Kali-yuga is setting in and because there is not enough yajna, chanting of God's names, propagation of spiritual activities and book distribution the planet Earth will be experiencing more and more of the symptoms of Kali-yuga. Here are some references from Srila Prabhupada about this topic, and a few very interesting quotes:

WITHOUT YAJNA THERE IS DROUGHT AND SHORTAGE OF GRAIN PRODUCTION [Bg. 3.14]. All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajna [sacrifice], and yajna is born of prescribed duties.

In other words, when people abandon service to God all kinds of calamities come upon the society. This truth is confirmed by Janet Larsen, a reporter from the Earth Policy Institute (http://www.earth-policy.org). She says that a record heat wave scorched Europe in August 2003, claiming an estimated 35,000 lives. In France alone, 14,802 people died from the searing temperatures - more than 19 times the death toll from the SARS epidemic worldwide. Germany saw some 7,000 people die from the heat wave. Spain and Italy each suffered heat-related losses of nearly 4,200 lives. The heat wave claimed at least 1,300 lives in Portugal and up to 1,400 lives in the Netherlands. In London, which on August 10th recorded its first triple-digit Fahrenheit temperature, an estimated 900 people died from the heat. Heat-related fatalities across the United Kingdom reached 2,045. In Belgium, temperatures higher than any in the Royal Meteorological Society's register dating back to 1833 brought 150 deaths. Since reports are not yet available for all European countries, the total heat death toll for the continent is likely to be substantially larger.

August 2003 was the warmest August on record in the northern hemisphere, but according to the projections of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), even more extreme weather events lie ahead. By the end of the century, the world's average temperature is projected to increase by 2.5-10.4 degrees Fahrenheit (1.4-5.8 degrees Celsius). As the mercury climbs, more frequent and more severe heat waves are in store. This information comes from mundane scientists who, as history has shown, were sometimes wrong (if not too often), but the fact is that Vedic scriptures predict heat is rising and consequent drought causes shortage of grain production. Here is a little bit more from the same group, the Earth Policy Institute. They say that 2003's world grain harvest fell short of consumption by 93 million tons, dropping world grain stocks to the lowest level in 30 years. As rising temperatures and falling water tables hamstring farmers' efforts to expand production, prices of wheat and rice are turning upward.

For the first time, the grain harvest has fallen short of consumption four years in a row. In 2000, the shortfall was a modest 16 million tons; in 2001 it was 27 million tons; and in 2002 a record-smashing 96 million tons. In its September 11 crop report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that this year's shrunken harvest of only 1,818 million tons is falling short of estimated consumption of 1,911 million tons by a near-record 93 million tons. New research from crop ecologists at the International Rice Research Institute and the USDA's Agriculture Research Service shows an emerging consensus that a 1-degree Celsius rise in temperature (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) above the optimum during the growing season leads to a 10-percent decline in grain yields. The verse we quoted from the Bhagavad-gita says that without yajna there cannot be sufficient rain; this corresponds with the current world situation. The Earth Policy Institute reports steady fall of water tables all over the world. For example they say that under the North China Plain, which produces half of China's wheat and a third of its corn, water tables are falling up to 3 metres per year. A World Bank assessment of China's water situation says, "Anecdotal evidence suggests that deep wells [drilled] around Beijing now have to reach 1,000 metres [more than half a mile] to tap fresh water, adding dramatically to the cost of supply." In unusually strong language for a Bank report, it foresees "catastrophic consequences for future generations" unless water use and supply can quickly be brought back into balance. Of course the balance cannot be brought about unless people become pious again. The following is a description of Kali-yuga, the age we are living in, by Markandeya Rsi some 5,000 years ago. You'll notice that many things have come to pass, whereas others are to come.

Devotees are persecuted; charity and sacrifices are performed just for show; brahmins work like sudras while sudras prosper; kings and presidents cannot set a good example for the people because they themselves are sinners; meat-eating becomes common; animals and even humans are raised for slaughter; people are short-lived, and their stature is diminished; the senses of taste and smell vanish; women become prostitutes; cows give no milk; violent, bestial men run rampant, and murder and robbery are commonplace; no one knows the meaning of God or truth; people become mad for intoxication and sex; flowers and fruits decrease and crows increase; people think that they become beautiful just by growing long hair; no one observes religious principles; the seasons become mixed; rainfall diminishes; trees and plants refuse to grow; young girls become pregnant, and boys turn grey-headed; old men refuse to abandon the follies of youth; large-scale famine and violent earthquakes kill millions of people.

So to conclude we want to invite everyone to join us in the bold effort to try to reform the society, or at least to set some people on the path of piety. That will surely protect ourselves as well. Our plan is to propagate Krishna consciousness throughout the society on as many levels as possible. In our particular case we are concentrating on distribution of Krishna conscious literature as ordered by our spiritual master His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. We are starting a new conference called Panca-tattva Nectar on PAMHO, so devotees can share their realizations and memories of the recent festival in Mayapur.

During the course of conversations, it was realized that there are so many stories out there, so many different understandings and realizations, so many small and big incidents to share, that we should endeavor to record them all and share them amongst everyone who wants to hear.

Last night, in the Deity Sewing Room upstairs from Sri Panca-tattva's altar, HG Jananivas prabhu was talking with Ramadevi mataji, the Deities' seamstress, along with Lilasamayi devi (from Italy) and Jalangi devi (from China), and myself, and there were endless stories, just between the four of us. We realized that these stories should be shared. Ramadevi suggested a conference, and Jananivas prabhu said it was a wonderful idea, so this is what we are now doing.

Please share the news with others in your zone who have returned from Mayapur, and those who did not come to Mayapur but who want to share the nectar. So many things have happened in the lives of so many devotees since the arrival of Sri Panca-tattva. It is obvious that we are entering a new phase in ISKCON, and these stories are an encouragement and an inspiration to everyone. Please write in to the conference and share the mercy...

H.G. Braja Bihari prabhu, the ISKCON Ombudsman, and "Resolve Project" Coordinator, will be visiting New Zealand, from the 10th of April, this year, to present and teach ISKCON's Mediation Course. It will run for four days, over that Easter weekend, from the 10th - 13th, from 9 AM to 1 PM and 3 to 6:30 PM (these hours to be confirmed), with other short breaks in between.

Following is more about the Course. It is open for everyone, except children; there will be a minimum donation requested (also to be finalised shortly), and we're still working on what arrangements we'll have for prasadam (I expect the course to include at least lunch). I'm sending this out before all the details are final, because I would like to get an indication of interest, to be able to finalise details about numbers, venue and costs.

"If we fight on account of diversity, then it is simply the material platform. Please try to maintain the philosophy of unity in diversity. That will make our movement successful."

The ISKCON Mediation Course is an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to help our fellow devotees overcome misunderstandings and disagreements. It is a lively seminar employing interactive and experiential learning.

The seminar includes:

--The skills and qualities of a good mediator
--Asking the right questions at the right time
--the step-by-step mediation process
--how to encourage those in conflict to attempt mediation
--what is mediate-able?
--two opportunities for each participant to do a role-play mediation
--the ISKCON Resolve project
--employment and preaching opportunities in mediation

Graduates gain a certificate and are added to ISKCON roster of trained mediators.

This course has been taught at the MIHE (The Mayapura Institute for Higher Education), and is now being taught all over the world, to enable devotees to please Srila Prabhupada, by dealing with conflicts that obstruct our ISKCON from within.

Srila Prabhupada Coming To The Silver Screen

The extra-ordinary life story of Srila Prabhupada disciple Hrisikesa dasa is set for the Silver Screen. The 600 page pre-production Script is completed and Asia's Pacific Film Works (20th Century Fox) has given the green light. The 6th Sense director M. Night Shyamalan is under consideration to direct the movie, which will be filmed on location using local production services in California, London, Nepal, India, Thailand, and Bali.

In the movie, tentatively named Hrisikesh, His Divine Grace is a major character. Srila Prabhupada may be played by famous Indian actor, Amrish Puri (who looks very much like Srila Prabhupada). Ben Kingsley may play HDG Srila Bon Maharaj. Josh Hartnett is under consideration to play Hrisikesh. Within two years the movie may be seen on main line cinemas around the globe. Featured in this movie are reincarnation, Krishna consciousness, Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bon Maharaj, Gaudiya Vaishnava Ashram life, Gaudiya siddhanta (mostly question and answer), the subplot of tug-of-war between Srila Prabhupada and Srila Bon Maharaj is also a feature. It is also a Rock 'n' Roll movie about The Misunderstood, it is a fugitive - escape movie, it is a culture shock movie, it is a war movie, and it is a thriller!!!

First he gets murdered, then his adventure begins: This movie begins in 1947 with Hrisikesh as an 80 year old sadhu getting shot during partition riots and then reborn in America as Richard Shaw-Brown. It features Hrisikesh as a rock 'n' roll star fugitive meeting devotees in San Francisco (1967) and becoming a disciple of Srila Prabhupada; it also features the philosophy of Lord Chaitanya, and the early days of the Hare Krishna Movement, also featured will be Vrindavan, and Mount Govardhan, and Varshana, and Nandagram, and Jaipur, and Karoli, and Delhi, and Bombay, and swinging 60s London, the extraordinarily great band, The Misunderstood, and it's unfair plight and super music, and exotic Bali; also the Vietnam draft and Boot Camp (with Uncle Sam demonized as the Devil and Vietnam war as hell), state of the art technology will be used to create FX reincarnation scenes that will be a roller-coaster ride for the viewers, Shyamasundar & Mukunda Maharaj are chief characters, as is Srila Krishna Das Babaji; it is also a Katmandu movie, a 1967 Summer of Love hippy movie, and an ANTI-WAR MOVIE! It is a story of East meets West.

Password holders are welcome to download the entire script as a pdf.file before it goes beyond pre-production and a line producer breaks it up into lighting script, cameras script, sets script, costumes script, above and below the line actors scripts, make up script, locations script, etc. This film should be a BIG boost for Gaudiya Vaishnavism, and help make Srila Prabhupada much more famous. Just as Mel Gibsons's Passion is reviving so much interest in Christ, so Hrisikesh can create a global revival of Srila Prabhupada and Gaudiya Siddhanta.

TRANSLATION
"I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhäratas [Arjuna]."

Turmeric Shepherd's Pie

Ingredients:
1/4 head green cabbage
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/2 cup short grain rice
1 1/4 cup water
1 cup frozen mixed vegies
3 medium potatoes
1/4-1/2 cup soy milk
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 packet bean curd sheets

Directions:
Peel potatoes, rinse and cook in water with 1 teaspoon salt until soft. Wash and rinse rice. Add water and 1/2 teaspoon salt and bring rice to boil in a separate medium size pot. Turn down heat, add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric to rice and let simmer slowly for about 30 minutes (or until done). Shred cabbage and oil a medium size square casserole dish with 1 tsp. of olive oil and add first layer of cabbage. Sprinkle caraway seeds over cabbage layer. Add turmeric rice on top of cabbage. Preheat oven to 325. Add one layer of bean curd sheets. Add layer of mixed frozen vegies on top. Mash potatoes with soy milk and 2 tablespoons (or more) of olive oil, salt and black pepper to desired taste and consistency. Spread mashed potatoes to fill casserole dish and sprinkle on top with turmeric. Bake in oven for 30-40 minutes and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Comment: Make sure you proportion the layers to allow enough room for a final hearty layer of potatoes. It's tempting to fill up the dish too quickly. I prefer leaving 1/3 of the dish for the spuds. If you have a food processor, the potatoes can be whipped into a nice creamy consistency. You can cook the pie with or without a lid depending on if you like a crispy topping on the potatoes.
Serves 3-4

Vege Meatballs and spaghetti

Ingredients:
1 box vital wheat gluten (found in bread section)
1 cup quaker oatmeal (from the canister) processed into flour
a few tablespoons tamari soy sauce in a quart of water (to boil)
Italian spices and seasonings ( 2 tsp basil, 1 tsp oregano, 1/2 tsp hing, 1 tsp garam masala, 1/2 tsp mint flakes)
tomato sauce  - paste
Olive oil
any pasta you want -  but spaghetti is good
toasted powdered nuts (optional)
parmasan cheese

Directions:
Combine vital wheat gluten with enough water to make a gummy mass. Boil the tamari water. Slice the gummy mass into small peices and boil them for a few minutes, or until they swell and are no longer sticky. Drain and cool the pieces and grind them in a cuisinart until the mass resembles cooked ground beef - mincemeat. Transfer to a bowl and add the oatmeal flour, italian seasonings, and salt and pepper to taste.

Make into balls and fry balls until crispy on the outside, then add to boiling tomato sauce mixed with enough water to cover all the balls. Simmer on low for an hour until alot of the water has cooked off. Cool balls slightly while you cook the pasta because they hold together better when they are not piping hot. Carefully remove balls to a serving bowl and reconstitute some of the sauce with water before serving. Serve over the pasta with the sauce on the side. You can use toasted powdered nuts in place of parmasan cheese as a topping.

Refrigerate leftover meatballs and use for meatball subs and sandwiches the next day. They are even better the next day and will keep in the fridge all week. After that, freeze for up to six months.

The following is from "Kathy Cooks" (copyright 1989)
Ingredients:
8 oz. dried bean curd (yuba) sticks (carried in larger Oriental marts - inexpensive)
1/4 C nutritional yeast
1/4 C peanut butter
2 Tbsp. miso
2 Tbsp. warm melted margarine
2 tsp. paprika
2 C barbeque sauce
Soak the dried bean curd 4-6 hours or overnight in hot water.
Drain and cut sticks into 4-6 inch lenths.
Squeeze out excess water and drain.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Oil cookie sheet.

In a large mixing bowl, mix next 5 ingredients together to form a smooth paste.
Toss yuba sticks in and mix until all sticks are evenly coated.
Lay side by side (touching each other) one layer thick, on the cookie sheet.
Bake 25 minutes or until the bottoms are brown and crisp.

Remove from oven and put in mixing bowl with barbeque sauce.
Toss well. Lay out on baking sheet again and bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

(5-6 servings) Messy and good.

Buddhist Vegetarian Fake Onion Flakes

Ingredients:
half a small head of cabbage

1. Remove hard core of cabbage.

2. Slice thinly the cabbage.

3. Spread on on a colander to air and dry for 10 minutes.

4. Fry in medium heat till golden brown. Garnish your favourite dishes that call for onion flakes, for all vegetarians whose diet prohibits onions and garlic.

I (the author) personally, use chopped cabbage for any vegetarian dish that requires onions, just substitude the amount. It works great with sphagetti sauces, substitude the garlic and onion with chopped cabbage.

Layered Southwestern Pasta Salad
Serves 6
Ingredients:
8 oz. Medium Shells, Elbow Macaroni or other medium pasta shape, uncooked
2 tsp. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
Salt to taste
1 15-oz. cooked black beans or can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 11-oz. cooked fresh sweet corn or can whole kernel corn, drained
1 red bell pepper, seeds and ribs removed, cut into strips
3/4 cup sliced grated green cabbage
1 tsp hing
1 2 1/4-oz. can sliced black olives, drained
3/4 cup non-fat mayonnaise
1/2 cup non-fat sour cream
1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. hot or mild salsa
2 tbsp. minced fresh cilantro (allspice)
 
Mayonnaise
1 heaped tablespoon tahini
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tsp hing (optional)
1 tsp paprika
salt
black pepper

Avocado Salsa Recipe
Ingredients
1 avocado
3 tbsp coriander, chopped fresh
1/2 cup water
3/4 tsp tabasco sauce
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp cider vinegar
1 tsp soy sauce, low sodium

Salsa Directions :
in blender jar. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.

Mayo' Directions:
Put the tahini into a bowl and gradually beat in the water and lemon juice; the mixture will be lumpy at first, but will gradually get light and fluffy as you beat in the liquid.
Add the hing if you are using this, and some salt and pepper.

Prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again. Toss with oil and sprinkle with cumin. Salt to taste.

Layer pasta, beans, corn, bell pepper, grated green cabbage and olives in a 2 1/2- to 3-qt. straight-sided glass bowl. In a small bowl combine mayonnaise, sour cream and salsa; mix well. Spread mixture evenly over top of pasta, sealing to edge of bowl. Sprinkle with cilantro. Cover bowl tightly and chill overnight.

Vegan Recipe: Nutty Applesauce Bread

Ingredients:
2 cups applesauce
½ cup apple juice
½ cup maple syrup
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds
Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Lightly grease a 9- × 5- × 3-inch loaf pan and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, apple juice, maple syrup, oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk well to combine. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and stir well to combine. Fold in the chopped nuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55 minutes or until the loaf is golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Place the loaf pan on a rack and cool for 15 minutes. Remove the loaf of bread from the pan and cool completely on a rack before slicing.

Avo Maggie
The lime in this drink reminds me a little of margaritas or "maggies". Like maggies, this drink is great with a salted rim or just a dash of salt. To salt a glass' rim, pour 1/4" water into a saucer or plate big enough to dunk the rim. Pour a 1/8" layer of salt onto a second plate. Dip the glass' rim into the water, then immediately dip in salt, turning the glass a little if it needs to pick up more salt. Pour drink into glass and serve.

Ingredients:
1 cup pitted and peeled avocado, diced
2 cups cold water, distilled preferred
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
3-4 large ice cubes or 1 cup small ice cubes, optional
Dash of salt, optional

Preparation (5 minutes)
Combine all ingredients in an electric blender and blend until smooth. If desired, add a dash of salt or salt the rims of serving glasses. Serve immediately.

One day Gopala was inspecting his house when a man sent by the king came up and pretended to be suffering from an urgent call of nature.  "Gopala," he said, "I have to immediately pass stool.  Please show me your bathroom.  I cannot contain myself."  "All right," said Gopala, "come on."  He took him over to the bathroom of the newly constructed house and allowed the man to squat down inside.  But when he tried to close the door for privacy, Gopala stood there by the open door.  "Gopala, why are you standing there and not allowing me to close the door?  Why are you holding that big stick in your hand.  Gopala said, "No, you can pass stool in my bathroom, but if you pass one drop of urine I'm going to smash your head."  Then the man laughed and confessed, "You are very clever," and he ran off defeated.

Story as told by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad

"They are for my mother and sister," his wife retorted.

"I'm not giving milk from my cow to you mother and sister," the brahmin shouted. "If your sister comes here to collect milk I'll kick....!" And as he said that he kicked the pots and they all broke into pieces all over the floor.

Now Gopal Bhan happened to see what was going on and the huge argument that followed regarding how, "....just the mention of your sister, and look what has happened to my pots.......!"

Gopal thought he would resolve the matter and immediately took up a stick, and ran into the room shouting at the brahmin while beating him with the stick, "Your cow has gone into my vegetable field and has eaten all my sabjis, what do you........????"

The brahmin coming to his senses then shouted, "Wait, I don't have a cow!"

Gopal, stopped and said, "........So what's all the commotion about?"

We were all siting taking prasadam, when one devotee who had just come back from India started telling of some of his encounters.
 You know the East is so mysterious, and did you know there are still so many practicing mystics. Once when we went down to Kerala we found this old temple, must have been at least ten thousand years old by the smoothness of the stone. Anyway there was this really old baba there. He seemed to be maintaining the temple, because there was incense bellowing out from near the altar, and no-one else was around.
 It appeared that the old man couldn't walk because he was supported by two crutches. He was very unsteady and his legs looked all knarled. He stood there praying, and chanting sacred mantras in what must have been Malalaylam. After an hour or so, he suddenly threw away one of his crutches. Then he stood there for another half an hour praying, after which he got really excited and threw away the other one of the crutches.

"Then what, .......Then what,......", all the devotees asked in anticipation.

"Well what happened then?"

"I'm glad you asked" he continued. " ......what happened next was the poor old baba fell flat on his face!"

Going along with this philosophy they say that simply by saying the red is running infers according to them that red runs. But according to our Vaisnava philosophy we understand that there is an unknown missing factor. Not that anything red runs, or that as soon as you write the word red it runs of the page. Could it be that there is a horse, and that is what is red, or that there is a dog, and the name of the dog that is running is Red. Nice boy Red !

Another example that we can give is that of the town on the South coast of England called Brighton on Sea, does this mean that Brighton is actually on the sea. No, not at all, but Brighton is on the shore of the sea. The mayavadis other famous example of non difference is that of white and a pot. Pour the water into the white pot. So are white and pot the same? If so pour the water into the white.............! Or is everything that is white a pot? Not likely, don't you pour that water on my white dhoti.

So being careful, and bearing all this nonsense undifferentiated one philosophy in mind, what happens if a red hat falls into the black sea?

It gets wet!

A mayavadi and a devotee who had lived in the same holy place for a long time, were walking through town one day. The mayavadi turned to the devotee and said, "You know all these years since coming here, I've been making pickles and storing it in jars. Some of that pickle is fifty years old now, and tastes wonderful. If I don't get to eat it all before I gain liberation into the Absolute would you pour all that pickle remaining all over my body so as we can be as one forever ?"

The devotee nodded his head affirmative, but knowing this kind of insidious philosophy remarked. "Sure I'll do that for you, but do you mind if, so that I also appreciate the oneness of this pickle, that I pass it through my intestine first?"

My Uncle is so much of a mayavadi, and he snores so loud, that he even wakes himself up.

He's alright now - he sleeps in another room!

A vampire bat came flapping in from the night covered in fresh blood and parked himself on the roof of the cave to get some sleep.

Pretty soon all the other bats smelled the blood and began hassling him about where he got it.

He told them to go away and let him get some sleep but they persisted until finally he gave in.

"OK, follow me" he said and flew out of the cave with hundreds of bats behind him.

Down through the valley they went, across a river and into a forest full of trees.
 
Finally he slowed down and all the other bats excitedly milled around him.

"Now, do you see that tree over there?" he asked.
 
"Yes, Yes, Yes!" the bats all screamed in a frenzy.
 
"Good" said the bat, "Because I sure as hell didn't!"
