sri-bhagavan uvaca--the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; kamyanam--with desire; karmanam--of activities; nyasam--renunciation; sannyasam--the renounced order of life; kavayah--the learned; viduh--know; sarva--of all; karma--activities; phala--of results; tyagam--renunciation; prahuh--call; tyagam--renunciation; vicaksanah--the experienced.TRANSLATION
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The giving up of activities that are based on material desire is what great learned men call the renounced order of life [sannyasa]. And giving up the results of all activities is what the wise call renunciation [tyaga].PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
The performance of activities for results has to be given up. This is the instruction of Bhagavad-gita. But activities leading to advanced spiritual knowledge are not to be given up. This will be made clear in the next verses. In the Vedic literature there are many prescriptions of methods for performing sacrifice for some particular purpose. There are certain sacrifices to perform to attain a good son or to attain elevation to the higher planets, but sacrifices prompted by desires should be stopped. However, sacrifice for the purification of one's heart or for advancement in the spiritual science should not be given up.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
June 16
Srila Prabhupada told us that he played football
as a youth and was secretary of the club. He was also remembering his childhood
friends. "For marriage they would trace the genealogy for seven generations.
It is prescribed that there can be no family ties within these seven generations.
In the West there is no genealogy-no family-it is dog society."
"If it were not for you, our position would be
hopeless," I said.
"I could understand you had no family love, anything.
You were very nice boy. You were selling so well, you encouraged me to
print Back to Godhead with Dai Nippon. Only by your encouragement. Otherwise
we were printing only two thousand, three thousand. Now they are printing
my words 'Prabhupada Speaks Out.' It is very good. They should come to
their senses. Before me everyone said, 'Yes, you are good.' Perhaps this
is the first time from the Eastern side they are getting such a chastisement.
They are not even civilized, what to speak of knowledge.
"Western civilization is to make something new
always. There is a nice house-destroy it and again build. And in Los Angeles
with the old temple-there was no need of breaking. D.L. Roy has written
a song, 'Put your head down, your legs up; you must do something new, no
matter how odd or ugly or rubbish it is.' But our philosophy is nothing
new. Stick to the old. Childish means 'cannot stick to one principle.'
"Therefore I say the Western civilization is
childish. One car design, then finished and next year a different one.
A devil's workshop. Entanglement in useless work. Chewing the chewed.
Am I right about this? So remain Krsna conscious.
Stick to the principles. You are making definite progress. I can see. Do
you feel?" Prabhupada asked each of us. "When you eat, no one has to ask
if you are satisfied."
"My Guru Maharaja called Ramakrishna 'murkha
pujari'-a foolish, illiterate priest. Any quotation attributed to him was
actually made by his disciples after his death."
"In my horoscope, it was written that after seventy
years, he will go outside India and establish so many temples. Guru Maharaja
foretold this before my Godbrothers in 1935: 'He will do the needful. No
one requires to help him.' Sridhara Maharaja was present. I left India
hopeless. I did not want to come back. I went with the intention, 'I shall
do this job!' In 1970, there was a conspiracy. I do not wish to remember
it. So I came back. I called you from Paris to take me away from Los Angeles.
Otherwise, I would have made Los Angeles my headquarters. My plan was like
that, but Krsna's plan was different. When I was leaving Los Angeles, I
was not happy. I said to Dvarakadisa, 'You have brought me here; now why
are You dragging me?' Krsna wanted me to leave Vrndavana. 'You were retired,
I will give you a better place.' And He has given a temple one hundred
times better than Los Angeles."
After lunch we showed Prabhupada the map drawn
according to the description of Jambudvipa in the Fifth Canto. "It was
not possible for me to write as a layman on such subjects. Someone [Krsna]
had to help me."

Pusta Krsna: Translation: "O my Lord, O Supreme, what is my position because I am born in a family which is full of the hellish material qualities of passion and ignorance? And what to speak of Your causeless mercy, which was never offered even to Lord Brahma and Lord Siva and the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, because You never put Your lotus hand upon their heads, but You have done so on my head."
Prabhupada:
This is the position. Prahlada Maharaja, humbly submitting, because he is Vaisnava, that "What is my position? My position is that I am born of rajas-tamo-guna." This birth takes place according to quality we acquire. Just like I was rebuking that toilet. This is so nasty, tamo-guna, and if I have no response to such tamo-guna place, that means I am also of that quality. Just like fire and fire, there is no reaction, but in fire and water there is reaction. Between fire and fire there is no reaction, but fire and water there is reaction. Similarly, sattva-guna -- sattva-guna, there is no reaction. Tamo-guna -- tamo-guna there is no reaction. It is... In English it is called incompatible. When different qualities, there is reaction, chemical reaction, acid and alkaline. Acid and acid, you mix; there is no reaction. But acid and alkaline, if you mix, there will be effervescence immediately. So karanam guna-sango asya sad-asad-janma-yonisu [Bg. 13.22]. If one is developing tamo-guna, then, if he becomes, he becomes a pig next life, there is no reaction. He'll be very glad that "I am pig," "I am dog." There is no reaction. But if one is sattva-guna, then he cannot tolerate. Immediately obnoxious: "Oh, such a nasty condition." So I am very sorry there was no reaction in such nasty toilet room. And you are getting sacred thread, the quality of brahmana, sattva-guna. It is very regrettable. Nobody reacted.
So this is the position, that unless we...
tada rajas-tamo-bhavah
kama-lobhadayas ca ye
ceta etair anaviddham
sthitam sattve prasidati
[SB 1.2.19]
We have to curb down these rago-guna, tamo-guna; otherwise there is no improvement. If a person in Krsna consciousness is found, no reaction in rajo-guna, tamo-guna, then he's a dull stone. It is not improving. It is simply showbottle. So showbottle will not act help, Tada rajas-tamo-bhavah. This prescription is there. If one develops Krsna consciousness, then it is to be understood that he has surpassed sattva-guna, the brahminical qualification. Why we offer sacred thread to a person who is coming from very, very low family? Because it is to be understood by chanting Hare Krsna mantra, by following the regulative principle, he has already come to the platform of sattva-guna. But if it is a false thing, there is no need of second initiation. There must be. One must come. This, our process, is "Don't do this. Do this: Chant Hare Krsna mantra sixteen rounds, and don't do this -- no illicit sex, no meat-eating." That means he's becoming purified. He's becoming purified from the rotten condition of rajo-guna and tamo-guna. But if he does not, then there should be no second initiation. This should be the rule............continued

TRANSLATION
Prahläda Mahäräja
said: Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities,
paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Viñëu, remembering them,
serving the lotus feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship
with sixteen types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming
His servant, considering the Lord one’s best friend, and surrendering everything
unto Him (in other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words)—these
nine processes are accepted as pure devotional service. One who has dedicated
his life to the service of Kåñëa through these nine methods
should be understood to be the most learned person, for he has acquired
complete knowledge.
PURPORT
When Prahläda Mahäräja
was asked by his father to say something from whatever he had learned,
he considered that what he had learned from his spiritual master was the
best of all teachings whereas what he had learned about diplomacy from
his material teachers, Ñaëòa and Amarka, was useless.
Bhaktiù pareçänubhavo viraktir anyatra ca (SB 11.2.42).
This is the symptom of pure devotional service. A pure devotee is interested
only in devotional service, not in material affairs. To execute devotional
service, one should always engage in hearing and chanting about Kåñëa,
or Lord Viñëu. The process of temple worship is called arcana.
How to perform arcana will be explained herein. One should have complete
faith in the words of Kåñëa, who says that He is the
great well-wishing friend of everyone (suhådaà sarva-bhütänäm
[Bg. 5.29]). A devotee considers Kåñëa the only friend.
This is called sakhyam. Puàsärpitä viñëau.
The word puàsä means “by all living entities.” There are no
distinctions permitting only a man or only a brähmaëa to offer
devotional service to the Lord. Everyone can do so. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gétä
(9.32), striyo vaiçyäs tathä çüdräs te
’pi yänti paräà gatim: although women, vaiçyas
and çüdras are considered less intelligent, they also can become
devotees and return home, back to Godhead.
After performing sacrifices, sometimes a person engaged in fruitive activity customarily offers the results to Viñëu. But here it is said, bhagavaty addhä: one must directly offer everything to Viñëu. This is called sannyäsa (not merely nyäsa). A tridaëòi-sannyäsé carries three daëòas, signifying kaya-mano-väkya—body, mind and words. All of these should be offered to Viñëu, and then one can begin devotional service. Fruitive workers first perform some pious activities and then formally or officially offer the results to Viñëu. The real devotee, however, first offers his surrender to Kåñëa with his body, mind and words and then uses his body, mind and words for the service of Kåñëa as Kåñëa desires.
Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura gives the following explanation in his Tathya. The word çravaëa refers to giving aural reception to the holy name and descriptions of the Lord’s form, qualities, entourage and pastimes as explained in Çrémad-Bhägavatam, Bhagavad-gétä and similar authorized scriptures. After aurally receiving such messages, one should memorize these vibrations and repeat them (kértanam). Smaraëam means trying to understand more and more about the Supreme Lord, and päda-sevanam means engaging oneself in serving the lotus feet of the Lord according to the time and circumstances. Arcanam means worshiping Lord Viñëu as one does in the temple, and vandanam means offering respectful obeisances. Man-manä bhava mad-bhakto mad-yäjé mäà namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Vandanam means namaskuru—offering obeisances or offering prayers. Thinking oneself to be nitya-kåñëa-däsa, everlastingly a servant of Kåñëa, is called däsyam, and sakhyam means being a well-wisher of Kåñëa. Kåñëa wants everyone to surrender unto Him because everyone is constitutionally His servant. Therefore, as a sincere friend of Kåñëa, one should preach this philosophy, requesting everyone to surrender unto Kåñëa. Ätma-nivedanam means offering Kåñëa everything, including one’s body, mind, intelligence and whatever one may possess.
One’s sincere endeavor to perform these nine processes of devotional service is technically called bhakti. The word addhä means “directly” One should not be like the karmés, who perform pious activities and then formally offer the results to Kåñëa. That is karma-käëòa. One should not aspire for the results of his pious activities, but should dedicate oneself fully and then act piously. In other words, one should act for the satisfaction of Lord Viñëu, not for the satisfaction of his own senses. That is the meaning of the word addhä, “directly.”

[Chaitanya charitamrita. Madhya-lila

“One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kåñëa favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service.” One should simply satisfy Kåñëa, without being influenced by fruitive knowledge or fruitive activity.
The Gopäla-täpané Upaniñad says that the word bhakti means engagement in the devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not of anyone else. This Upaniñad describes that bhakti is the offering of devotional service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To perform devotional service, one should be relieved of the bodily conception of life and aspirations to be happy through elevation to the higher planetary systems. In other words, work performed simply for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord, without any desire for material benefits, is called bhakti. Bhakti is also called niñkarma, or freedom from the results of fruitive activity. Bhakti and niñkarma are on the same platform, although devotional service and fruitive activity appear almost the same.
The nine different processes enunciated by Prahläda Mahäräja, who learned them from Närada Muni, may not all be required for the execution of devotional service; if a devotee performs only one of these nine without deviation, he can attain the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Sometimes it is found that when one performs one of the processes, other processes are mixed with it. That is not improper for a devotee. When a devotee executes any one of the nine processes (nava-lakñaëä), this is sufficient; the other eight processes are included. Now let us discuss these nine different processes.
(1) Çravaëam. Hearing of the holy name of the Lord (çravaëam) is the beginning of devotional service. Although any one of the nine processes is sufficient, in chronological order the hearing of the holy name of the Lord is the beginning. Indeed, it is essential. As enunciated by Lord Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, ceto-darpaëa-märjanam: [Cc. Antya 20.12] by chanting the holy name of the Lord, one is cleansed of the material conception of life, which is due to the dirty modes of material nature. When the dirt is cleansed from the core of one’s heart, one can realize the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead—éçvaraù paramaù kåñëaù sac-cid-änanda-vigrahaù [Bs. 5.1]. Thus by hearing the holy name of the Lord, one comes to the platform of understanding the personal form of the Lord. After realizing the Lord’s form, one can realize the transcendental qualities of the Lord, and when one can understand His transcendental qualities one can understand the Lord’s associates. In this way a devotee advances further and further toward complete understanding of the Lord as he awakens in realization of the Lord’s holy name, transcendental form and qualities, His paraphernalia, and everything pertaining to Him. Therefore the chronological process is çravaëaà kértanaà viñëoù [SB 7.5.23]. This same process of chronological understanding holds true in chanting and remembering. When the chanting of the holy name, form, qualities and paraphernalia is heard from the mouth of a pure devotee, his hearing and chanting are very pleasing. Çréla Sanätana Gosvämé has forbidden us to hear the chanting of an artificial devotee or nondevotee.
Hearing from the text of Çrémad-Bhägavatam
is considered the most important process of hearing. Çrémad-Bhägavatam
is full of transcendental chanting of the holy name, and therefore the
chanting and hearing of Çrémad-Bhägavatam are transcendentally
full of mellows. The transcendental holy name of the Lord may be heard
and chanted accordingly to the attraction of the devotee. One may chant
the holy name of Lord Kåñëa, or one may chant the holy
name of Lord Räma or Nåsiàhadeva (rämädi-mürtiñu
kalä-niyamena tiñöhan [Bs. 5.39]). The Lord has innumerable
forms and names, and devotees may meditate upon a particular form and chant
the holy name according to his attraction. The best course is to hear of
the holy name, form and so on from a pure devotee of the same standard
as oneself. In other words, one who is attached to Kåñëa
should chant and hear from other pure devotees who are also attached to
Lord Kåñëa. The same principle applies for devotees attracted
by Lord Räma, Lord Nåsiàha and other forms of the Lord.
Because
Kåñëa is the ultimate form of the Lord (kåñëas
tu bhagavän svayam [SB 1.3.28]), it is best to hear about Lord Kåñëa’s
name, form and pastimes from a realized devotee who is particularly attracted
by the form of Lord Kåñëa. In Çrémad-Bhägavatam,
great devotees like Çukadeva Gosvämé have specifically
described Lord Kåñëa’s holy name, form and qualities.
Unless one hears about the holy name, form and qualities of the Lord, one
cannot clearly understand the other processes of devotional service. Therefore
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu recommends that one chant the
holy name of Kåñëa. paraà vijayate çré-kåñëa-saìkértanam.
If one is fortunate enough to hear from the mouth of realized devotees,
he is very easily successful on the path of devotional service. Therefore
hearing of the holy name, form and qualities of the Lord is essential.
In Çrémad-Bhägavatam
(1.5.11) there is this verse:
tad-väg-visargo janatägha-viplavo
yasmin prati-çlokam abaddhavaty
api
nämäny anantasya yaço-’ìkitäni
yat
çåëvanti gäyanti
gåëanti sädhavaù
“Verses describing the name, form and qualities of Anantadeva, the unlimited Supreme Lord, are able to vanquish all the sinful reactions of the entire world. Therefore even if such verses are improperly composed, devotees hear them, describe them and accept them as bona fide and authorized.” In this connection, Çrédhara Svämé has remarked that a pure devotee takes advantage of another pure devotee by trying to hear from him about the holy name, form and qualities of the Lord. If there is no such opportunity, he alone chants and hears the Lord’s holy name.
(2) Kértanam. The hearing of the holy name has been described above. Now let us try to understand the chanting of the holy name, which is the second item in the consecutive order. It is recommended that such chanting be performed very loudly. In Çrémad-Bhägavatam, Närada Muni says that without shame he began traveling all over the world, chanting the holy name of the Lord. Similarly, Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu has advised:
tåëäd api sunécena
taror api sahiñëunä
amäninä mänadena
kértanéyaù
sadä hariù
[Cc. Ädi 17.31]
A devotee can very peacefully chant the holy name of the Lord by behaving more humbly than the grass, being tolerant like a tree and offering respects to everyone, without expecting honor from anyone else. Such qualifications make it easier to chant the holy name of the Lord. The process of transcendental chanting can be easily performed by anyone. Even if one is physically unfit, classified lower than others, devoid of material qualifications or not at all elevated in terms of pious activities, the chanting of the holy name is beneficial. An aristocratic birth, an advanced education, beautiful bodily features, wealth and similar results of pious activities are all unnecessary for advancement in spiritual life, for one can very easily advance simply by chanting the holy name. It is understood from the authoritative source of Vedic literature that especially in this age, Kali-yuga, people are generally short-living, extremely bad in their habits, and inclined to accept methods of devotional service that are not bona fide. Moreover, they are always disturbed by material conditions, and they are mostly unfortunate. Under the circumstances, the performance of other processes, such as yajïa, däna, tapaù and kriyä—sacrifices, charity and so on—are not at all possible. Therefore it is recommended:
harer näma harer näma
harer nämaiva kevalam
kalau nästy eva nästy
eva
nästy eva gatir anyathä
[Cc. Ädi 17.21]
“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” Simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord, one advances perfectly in spiritual life. This is the best process for success in life. In other ages, the chanting of the holy name is equally powerful, but especially in this age, Kali-yuga, it is most powerful. Kértanäd eva kåñëasya mukta-saìgaù paraà vrajet: simply by chanting the holy name of Kåñëa, one is liberated and returns home, back to Godhead. Therefore, even if one is able to perform other processes of devotional service, one must adopt the chanting of the holy name as the principal method of advancing in spiritual life. Yajïaiù saìkértana-präyair yajanti hi sumedhasaù: [SB 11.5.32] those who are very sharp in their intelligence should adopt this process of chanting the holy names of the Lord. One should not, however, manufacture different types of chanting. One should adhere seriously to the chanting of the holy name as recommended in the scriptures: Hare Kåñëa, Hare Kåñëa, Kåñëa Kåñëa, Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare.

O lotus-eyed Lord! Those who proudly think that they are liberated but do not render devotional service unto you certainly have impure intelligence. Although they perform severe austerities and penance, and rise up to a high spiritual position, they fall down again because they have no respect for devotional service to your lotus feet. (Srimad Bhagavatam 10:2:32-33. Srila Prabhupda's translation.)
"There are many philosophical speculators (jnanis) who consider themselves liberated but their intelligence is not purified unless they engage in Krsna's devotional service." (Chaitanya Charitamrita. Madhya-lila 22:30)
We have practically seen that the helpless kitten is totally reliant on the mercy of its mother, sometimes it will wander here and there crying out for the mother cat. The mother cat hearing the calls of its young comes and carries the small kitten around in her mouth and keeps them under her protection. So the kitten is looked after by the mercy aspect of the mother cat. So this is how the Tengalite Sri Vaishnava sees his/her situation as being dependent upon the Lord's mercy aspect.
The Vadagalite or monkey philosopher is like the small baby monkey. As the mother monkey goes from roof top to forest collecting fruits for its young the baby hangs on by its own strength for dear life. So the Vadagalite thinks that it is by my strength and expertise that I will attain moksha, but like the small monkey sometimes they fall off as the mother jumps from this place to that. Certainly the baby monkey is not abandoned by the mother cat, and out of mercy again comes for it.
The Gaudiya Vaishnava view sees with the example of Mother Yashoda how she of her own accord tried to bind baby Krishna to a wooden grinding mortar but was unsuccessful, her rope always being two inches too short. According to Srila Vishvanath Chakravarti Thakur in his commentary to Bhagavad Gita 10:10 tesam satata yuktanam bhajatam priti purvakam..........that when Krishna was satisfied with the devotional endeavour directed to His attention in desperation, then He gave His mercy and allowed Himself to be bound not by the physical ropes, but by the ropes of love she had for him.
Likewise we may cry in wait all day and night for the mercy to come, and it may if He so desires. But there's a need for us to perform some practical devotional service by which we can be actually engaged in pleasing Him.

“By cultivating philosophical knowledge one can understand his spiritual position and thus be liberated, and by performing sacrifices and pious activities one can achieve sense gratification in a higher planetary system, but the devotional service of the Lord is so rare that even by executing hundreds and thousands of such sacrifices one cannot obtain it.” (Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita. Like a fish out of water..............
Just like if you take out a fish from water, you can give
it very comfortable, velvet lying down bedstead. The fish cannot be happy.
It will die. Because the fish is the animal of water, it cannot be happy
without water. Similarly, we are all spirit souls. Unless we are in spiritual
life or in the spiritual world, we cannot be happy. That is our position.
Everyone is trying for that spiritual realization, but he does not know.
Therefore he is trying to be happy here in material condition. He is becoming
frustrated, confused. So we have to withdraw this understanding that “We
shall be very happy by making adjustment of this material world.” That
we have to understand first of all. Then Kåñëa consciousness
will be effective.
............that
our students, these boys and girls, they have been very much detestful
in the materialistic way of life. Otherwise, they are coming of great nation.
Just these American boys and girls, their fathers and their guardians,
they are not poor. There is no scarcity of food or any material enjoyment.
Why they are being frustrated? In India... You may say that India is poverty-stricken.
They may be frustrated due to poverty, but why American (Australian, European,
New Zealand etc) boys and girls are being frustrated? That is the proof
that materialistic way of life cannot make you happy. You may go on for
some time to become happy, but happiness will never come from materialistic
way of life. That’s a fact. So those who are trying to be happy by adjustment
of materialistic way of life, they cannot take to Krishna consciousness.(ACBSP.
9th September 1971, London, England.)
We must have spiritual life. If a fish is taken out of water, it cannot be made happy with all the comforts of land. To be happy, a fish must have all the freedom of water. Similarly, we are all spiritual sparks, and we cannot become happy in matter. We require spiritual food, spiritual atmosphere. (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada)
"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras
as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that for thousands of years by advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Vegetarianism
Are you one of those growing number of people who have decided that
meat eating is wrong whichever way you look at it - either morally, ethically,
economically,
spiritually or for health reasons? If the answer is no, consider the
following facts:
MORAL AND ETHICAL REASONS
In 2000 in the UK 700 million innocent animals were slaughtered to satisfy
the human palate. Mankind goes on perpetrating these obscenities on the
defenceless
creations of God and yet expects peace and happiness for itself. Gandhiji
said the following about cow protection but the same sentiments apply to
all animals -
"Cow protection to me is infinitely more than mere protection of the
cow. The cow is merely a type of all that lives. Cow protection means protection
of the weak,
the helpless, the dumb and the deaf. Man becomes then not the lord
and master of all creation, but he is its servant." The next step in the
progress of human
civilisation has to be the liberation of animals from the tyranny of
mankind.
ECONOMIC REASONS
When around 10 million people are starving in the world today, most
of the fertile land in the USA and other European countries is used to
grow crops to feed
animals, which are in turn consumed by human beings. This is an absolutely
wasteful way of feeding ourselves; e.g. for every 16 pounds of grains fed
to cattle only
one pound of meat is produced. It is estimated that a 10% reduction
in meat production will result in enough grain to feed 10 million people.
HEALTH AND NUTRITIONAL REASONS
Most of the modern killer diseases are associated with the over-consumption
of fats, mainly animal derived. As early as 1961, the Journal of the American
Medical
Association said: 90 - 97% of heart disease can be avoided by a vegetarian
diet. Meat is suspected of causing a host of cancers such as cancer of
the stomach,
cancer of the breast, cancer of the bowels, leukaemia and many others.
Death by food poisoning is also an ever present threat to meat-eaters.
The high level of
cholesterol in eggs means that they must be avoided completely if one
wants to avoid heart disease. Nutritionally speaking, vegetables, fruits,
nuts and grains are an
excellent source of protein and are easier to assimilate than those
of meat.
SPIRITUAL REASONS
For every single action that we perform there is a reaction. If we cause
pain and suffering to other living beings, then in this life and in the
next, we will in turn suffer
the consequences of our impious activities. In the Vedas it is mentioned
that one who kills a cow will suffer the same fate for as many lives as
there are hairs on the
cow he killed. The reactions of karma equally affect those who kill,
deliver, sell, prepare, cook, serve and eat the meal. There is no escape
from the stringent laws of
nature for anyone who aids and abets the animal slaughter industry.
Indeed all the major religions advocate the ideals of vegetarianism:
The Annushasen Parva,
Mahabharat says "Undoubtedly all those human beings who prefer meat to
several forms of food are like vultures."
The Manusmrti says "All
supporters of meat eating are sinners." It further states, "One whose meat
I eat will eat my flesh in the next life."
The Christian Faith also
says in Genesis (1.29) "Behold, I have given you every herb-bearing tree
in which the fruit of the tree-yielding seed, it unto you shall be for
meat."
Guru Nanak, Founder of
the Sikh Faith, said "My disciples do not take meat and wine."
Lord Buddha said, "Meat
is food for sub-human beings".
The Acharang Sutra of
the Jain Faith said, "All creatures desire self-preservation, hence no
creature should be slaughtered."
Gandhiji said "I do feel
that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease
to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants."

Delhi Bans Smoking in Public Places
http://headlines.sify.com/3034news1.html?headline=Ban~on~smoking~in~public~places~comes~into~effect
NEW DELHI, INDIA, May 1, 2004: In a major public health measure, the ban on smoking in public places, direct and indirect advertising of all tobacco products and their sale to minors came into force on Saturday in the country under the Anti-smoking Act. Government is also working on other aspects of the Act like prohibition of sale of tobacco products near educational institutions, mandatory depiction of statutory warning including pictorial warning on tobacco products and mandatory depiction of tar and nicotine content, Health Ministry officials told PTI. These rules are likely to be ready in three months, but Government would give some time to the industry before they actually come into force, they said.
"State Governments have been asked to authorise people to implement the new provisions that came into force," the officials said. There is a provision of US$4.00 fine for punishment for people who violate the rules and smoke in public places, they said. The order defines public places as enclosed areas like restaurants, offices, railway waiting rooms, buses, airports etc.

Smoking Scenes Abundant in Movies
http://us.imdb.com/StudioBrief/#2
USA, February 18, 2004: A U.S. study indicating that smoking scenes in today's movies are now only slightly more numerous than the smoke-filled flicks of the 1950s has touched off an uproar in Britain, where restrictions on cigarette advertising are in many ways stricter than they are in the U.S. The study, conducted by the University of California at Berkeley and published by the Journal of American Public Health, showed that while the number of "tobacco incidents" in films dropped to 4.9 per hour in the 1980s, they had risen to 10.9 in 2001/2002. Amanda Sandford of the British anti-smoking group ASH told the London Independent, "If smoking in films is returning to levels in the 1950s then it is shocking. ... We now have a tobacco advertising ban in Britain, and Hollywood movies should not be seen as a loophole through which to promote smoking." In the course of investigations of the tobacco industry in the US, it was discovered that Sylvester Stallone was paid millions of dollars to smoke a particular brand of cigarettes in his movies.

Of all the compelling reasons to quit smoking, this one should make pet lovers sit up and take notice: there's ample scientific evidence to suggest that secondhand cigarette smoke can cause cancer in companion animals.
And your furry friends don't just inhale smoke; the smoke particles are also trapped in their fur and ingested when they groom themselves with their tongues.
West Village resident Cynthia Garnant has been smoking for 25 years, and currently goes through a pack of Now 100s a day.
She and her non-smoking husband, Greg, share four cats: Mahogany, Barney, Tig, and Titania. And she has no immediate plans to kick her longstanding habit.
None of the couple's cats has displayed smoke-related health issues, Garnant says. "Mahogany has kidney problems and Barney's thyroid levels are elevated," she points out, "but these are symptoms of age, not secondhand smoke."
Still, she adds, "I smoke only in the living room, where we have three air filters. I never smoke in the bedroom, which is the cats' favorite place to hang out."
A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different study published in the same journal showed that long-nosed dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers.
And in yet another study, vets from Tufts University found that cats whose owners smoked were three times as likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer.
So - short of kicking the habit - Garnant and her husband take three of the cats to the vet at least twice a year for checkups; the fourth, Barney, goes every three months.
"All of our cats are rescues," Garnant concludes. "If they had the choice between being living in this apartment and staying at a shelter, where they could possibly be put to sleep, I think they'd choose the first option."

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, April 25, 2004: Louise Ayotte is attracted to people who laugh loud and a lot, so she signed up for three hours of heavy breathing, face-making and laughing in Dr. Madan Kataria's class on how to unleash more contagious giggles. Kataria is a Bombay physician who's making a tour of Canada to train aspiring laughter coaches. A session last year in Montreal drew followers from across the country, and his teachings have inspired people to form clubs in search of the incredible release of unstoppable laughter. "I train people to laugh without humour or jokes. Jokes are intellectual, and not everyone gets them. We laugh at nothing as a form of exercise," Kataria said. Converts to his "laughter yoga" believe it helps them deal with stress and depression while bolstering their immune systems.
With a public awareness campaign in Montreal this summer followers hope to gather 25,000 people to giggle in unison on World Laughter Day in May 2005. Louise at first feared she had stepped into loonyville when a woman in the audience burst out howling at Dr Kataria, and had to be removed until she was calm enough to follow instructions. "He had us doing all kinds of crazy things," Ayotte said. "Walking around and hugging each other, making a face like a roaring lion." Kataria urges students to force the laughs out at first, even if they don't feel like it, and leads exercises such as argument laughter, in which participants march at each other, laughing and wagging their index fingers. In milkshake laughter, people pretend to hold glasses of milk, shaking them and chuckling. Soon, he promises, people reach a state of meditative laughter as giggles flow freely and for no apparent reason. Sure enough, Ayotte, a retired teacher, had tears rolling down her cheeks. "It was just contagious. I couldn't stop," she said.
Countless studies have shown that uncontrollable laughing produces health benefits, and that state is reached by eye contact. "It's a human connection that really reduces inhibitions and shyness," Kataria said. "Once you are willing and you start to let it go, it comes easily." Lone Sorensen, a devotee who travelled from Yellowknife to Montreal, said Kataria's visits leave lasting legacies. Sorensen is working with fledgling groups across the country to organise a national celebration. "It's spreading like a ripple of laughter," she said. The reverberation from a crowd of people laughing together is amazing. You can hear it around the world. It's the sound of peace."

Excerpt from "Feeling Safe -- Resonating with mass energies"" by Dr William Bloom
It is best to face the fact that unless you are a complete angel, like everyone else you carry some negative stuff - and therefore you too will feel and be affected by external vibrations similar to the stuff that is already in you. You will not only be affected by the energies of individual people, but will also be touched by the collective energies created by large groups.
For example, if you go into a mood of selfishness or fear, you may connect with the mass energies of selfishness and fear. This is like turning the dial on a radio. You simply change the frequency and catch the waves of the different transmitters.
It is important to realize just how easily you may be influenced. This sometimes can, for example, affect what people desire. Men and women can become obsessed with getting a particular piece of new clothing or a car or furniture. Teenagers must have the latest CD or trainers. In these instances, relevant to status and fashion, people are not just carried along by the usual psychological factors of wanting to maintain a certain image and identity; they are also caught up in the mass energy currents of desire. They are like pieces of wood carried on the tide and have little power to resist.
Throughout the world, you can see individuals and groups of people suddenly caught up in a mass movement and behaving in ways that they never thought possible. Perhaps you remember the photographs of the Rwandan women with machetes and knives - including mothers, professionals and highly educated women - on a rampage to kill and maim members of another ethnic group. There is, of course, a mass field of energy that contains violence and aggression. In this case, these normally benevolent women were overwhelmed by the energies of the herd instinct and carried along into psychotic behavior...
Which frequencies are you tuned in to? Are you connected to the benevolent or the angry forces? These are important questions because you should be aware of what you are attracting to yourself. It is wise to assess how you are influenced by the stuff that you do not see. You need to be realistic about the fact that your own negativity, including the moods that you hide and even deny, are attracting more of the same - and creating more of the same...

LONDON, ENGLAND, April 28, 2004: British school students should be taught the basics of the country's six principal religions: Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Buddhism, as well as Christianity and Judaism -- states a report by the government's curriculum and examinations watchdog. Education Secretary Charles Clarke said: "Religious education plays an important part in our children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development." The report also calls on young people to study other minority religious traditions, (singling out the Baha'i faith, Jainism and Zoroastrianism), and should also consider secular philosophies, such as humanism. Pupils should be able to study minority religions that have a following in their community. The report was broadly welcomed by all the faith groups. The Church of England recognized the sensitive handling of this issue. The Muslim Council of Britain and the Muslim Educational Trust said the report sought to promote a pluralistic society. The guidelines make it clear that Christianity, the country's main religion, should be studied by all pupils throughout their schooling, whilst study of other religions would be completed in phases from the ages of five to fourteen. Young pupils should visit different places of worship. Teachers should promote respect for the differences in peoples, and warn of the "destructive power of prejudice, racism, discrimination, offending behavior and bullying." The guidance is not statutory, but many schools are expected to follow its principles. The report states that religious education in Britain should be a statutory requirement and that it should reflect the particular needs of local communities."

Balaji Temple Reopens After Lunar Eclipse
http://newstodaynet.com/05may/ld7.htm
TIRUPATI, INDIA, May 5, 2004: The Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala reopened this morning after it was closed last night for the lunar eclipse. According to the age-old temple customs and rituals, on any eclipse, either solar or lunar, the Hindu temples would be closed till the eclipse was over. The temple sources said the lunar eclipse commenced at 12:38 am today and ended at around 4:30 am. After, the temple priests entered the temple and performed sacred special rituals like cleansing the temple by chanting sacred Vedic hymns. After performing these rituals, devotees were allowed into the temple for darshan at around 9:30 am, temple sources said. Tirumala temple had been receiving unprecedented rush since three days and the waiting time for darshan on Sunday and Monday exceeded 78 hours before it was closed last evening at around 7:30 pm on the eve of the eclipse.

The ongoing academic and media battle over the Aryan invasion and the Vedic-Harappan convergence is part of the de-colonization process.
Record of failure:The sad fact is that after nearly two hundred years, Western Indology has still failed to understand India, her culture, her soul or her history. It has progressed little beyond Eurocentric and missionary stereotypes, only adding Marxist.
Freudian and other modern stereotypes to these, naively believing that these Western ideologies are somehow dramatically enlightening to India and its ancient and profound spiritual culture, when they are usually irrelevant or inferior and have failed in the West. Meanwhile it has discovered little more in the vast treasures of Vedic culture than any primitive culture.
Western Indology does not understand the philosophy of India, its emphasis on dharma and karma, liberation and enlightenment, or its great traditions of yoga and meditation. It does not acknowledge the value of its rishi/yogi culture and its Vedic origin.
Nor does it recognize any such higher yogic spiritual tradition as behind any ancient civilizations or behind humanity as a whole. From its perspective, Indian spirituality is a self-serving fantasy hiding what is unscientific, inhumane or archaic.
Yet even more sadly Western Indology does not want to recognize that India as a unique civilization really exists. It fails to see any real identity to Indic civilization prior to British rule or any real continuity to it from ancient times. Rather it views India as a melting pot of invading cultures with no overriding political or cultural background or unity.
It was in fact stated by Marx that India has no history, and what is called history is the record of successive intruders. This is the position still taken by Western Indologists and their counterparts in India. They fiercely resist any suggestion of an indigenous civilization in India.
Western thought reads the type of political and psychological motives into Indic schools of thought that are the norm for its own history. It tries to understand the Indic tradition according to Marxism, Freud, Deconstructionism or whatever the latest trend in Western thought happens to be, as if these characteristic preoccupations of the outward looking Western mind could unlock the keys to a very different spiritual and yogic culture.
In fact, they usually tell us more about the Western mind than anything really of India's traditional culture. In short, the West has never really questioned the appropriateness of its means of knowledge for understanding Indic civilization.
Not surprisingly, Indic civilization remains a mystery for it and the West does not even suspect the riches of the higher mind that it contains. Western intellectual culture is generally quite critical of the Indic tradition and rejects most of it as unscientific or erroneous. It styles Indic thought as mystical, irrational, superstitious or even absurd.
The main approach of Western Indology has been one of negationism, denial and denigration. This failure of Western Indology is nowhere more evident as in its treatment of the Vedas. The monumental literature of the Vedas the largest of the ancient world and given a reverence throughout India throughout its history is reduced to the record of invading hordes or pastoral nomads that should have left no real literary record anyway.
Vedic literature is not examined in depth but simply explained away by such negationist theories, as something of no consequence that need not be taken seriously

How British Misguided World on Vedic History
http://www.hknet.org.nz/MotiveBritishRajMissionaries.html
In order to renovate the house, someone in Japan tore open the wall.
Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls.
When tearing down the walls, he found that there was a lizard stuck
there because a nail from outside was hammered into one of its feet. He
saw this, felt pity, and at the same time he was curious. When he checked
the nail, turns out, it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first
built.
What happened?
The lizard had survived in such a position for 10 years! In a dark wall
partition for 10 years without moving, it is impossible and mind boggling.
Then he wondered how this lizard survived for 10 years without moving
a single step--since its foot was nailed!
So he stopped his work and observed the lizard, what it had been doing, and what and how it has been eating. Later, not knowing from where it came, appeared another lizard, with food in its mouth.
Ahh! He was stunned and at the same time, touched deeply.
Another lizard had been feeding the stuck one for the past 10 years...
Such love, such a beautiful love! Such love happened with this tiny
creature...
What can love do?
It can do wonders!
Love can do miracles!
Just think about it; one lizard had been feeding the other one untiringly for 10 long years, without giving up hope on its partner.
If a small creature like a lizard can love like this... just imagine how we can love if we try.

World No Tobacco Day 2004
The Tobacco Free Initiative proposes that World No Tobacco Day 2004
focus on tobacco and poverty.
http://www.who.int/tobacco/areas/communications/events/wntd/2004/en/
The contribution of tobacco to death and disease is well documented. Less attention is given to the ways in which tobacco increases poverty.
Tobacco is the fourth most common risk factor for disease worldwide.
The economic costs of tobacco use are equally devastating. In addition
to the high public health costs of treating tobacco-caused diseases, tobacco
kills people at the height of their productivity, depriving families of
breadwinners and nations of a healthy workforce. Tobacco users are also
less productive while they are alive due to increased sickness. A 1994
report estimated that the use of tobacco resulted in an annual global net
loss of US$ 200 thousand million, a third of this loss being in developing
countries.
Smoking Biggest Killer in Developing World
Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/health/newsid_1238000/1238854.stm
SUSSEX, U.K., March 26,
2001: Smoking will become the biggest killer in developing world countries
within the next 20 years, surpassing those deaths caused by the Aids epidemic
according to the Institute of Development Studies in Sussex, UK's government-
based study. The report forecasts that within two decades 8.5 million people
a year will be dying in developing countries because of smoking. A billion
people around the world are currently smokers, and tobacco-related illness
currently kills 3.5 million a year. At the moment it is mainly a rich country
disease, but the report says this is changing fast. The report says the
increasing process of globalization will be partly to blame as developing
countries are forced to drop tariff barriers against highly successful
international brands and that many governments are seduced by the inward
investment this brings, but have not realized the long-term cost in human
lives.

Changing the face of the Earth, Giving the children

Opening their eyes to the spiritual sky, showing them
what life's really worth.
(Mangalananda dasa - Michael Cassidy)
From a Krishna conscious perspective what does this mean? What can we do to help?
There are many simple practical things that individuals can do, that groups of people can do, that entire communities can do, and that human society in general can do to emprove things in tangible ways, that will have an immediate effect on the environment around us, and a subtle effect due to the consciousness under which it is done.
Stop poluting the environment:
personal - stop intake
of harmful toxins; nicotine - tobaco, drugs of dependence, caffein, alcohol,
adopt a vegetarian life-style.
communial - make others
aware of these dangers, and the results of these dangers.
social - put articles
in newspapers and magazines exposing poluting factors and offer a positive
alternative way of life.
There are many factors that can be addressed directly through the philosophy
and life-style of Krishna consciousness, as mentioned in the following
web-pages:
Changing the Face of the Earth campaign
http://krishna.org/ctfote/
The Environment and Economic Development
http://krishna.org/ctfote/ecoenv.html
If each and every one of us take it upon ourselves and display some personal self discipline in what we do, what we eat, what we use in the world, by first looking at the nature of each of them according to Bhagavad Gita's teachings; are things environmentally friendly - in the mode of goodness; are they a real dire necessity in life, or an unnecessery burden to get, to deal with, and to dispose of - mode of passion; or are they dangerous in every way, destined to bring about harm, self destruction, or even global destruction through their use, through their disposal etc. - mode of ignorance.
In this day and age there are more environmentally aware options available in society if we just take a few moments to look. Once we have found items that are environmentally friendly; through limiting waste, and where waste is essential "grey waste/grey water", proper filtration methods, examining and choosing packaging, disposal through re-cycling, etc.
We can look at a few items here:
Use organic produce where
possible - but still check as some use blood and bone of animals under
"organic flags"
Use products that have not
caused others suffering to attain them
Avoid anything that has exploited
or harmed others, including animal bodies.
Avoid anything/anyone that
has implicated or manipulated other's economy through wars etc.........
Support those who try to create
sustained ecology environments - permaculture, organics etc.
Don't waste the energy given
to us; be it food, wealth, time, they are opulences, not to be gambled
and lost....
Sri Isopanishad tells us that there's been given an alotted amount for each of us according to our karma and that we should not encroach upon others' alotted domains. We cannot get more happiness than is destined to us, as we cannot also get less, what is our portion can only be achieved, if we do exploit another then as a thief is punished we will also face a natural reaction called imballance. Imballances are now prominent all over the world and it is due to our lack of for-thought primarily that so much of this is going on.
"An old man, one year past his allotted threescore and ten, wandered into New York's East Village and set about to prove to the world that he knew where God could be found. In only three months, the man, Swami A.C. Bhaktivedanta, succeeded in convincing the world's toughest audience -- Bohemians, acidheads, potheads and hippies -- that he knew the way to God: Turn Off, Sing Out, and Fall in. This new brand of holyman, with all due deference to Dr. Leary, has come forth with a brand of 'Consciousness Expansion' that's sweeter than acid, cheaper than pot, and nonbustible by fuzz. How is all this possible? 'Through Krishna,' the Swami says."

Dear Devotees,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Panca-tattva.
We are starting a new conference called Panca-tattva Nectar on PAMHO, so devotees can share their realizations and memories of the recent festival in Mayapur.
During the course of conversations, it was realized that there are so many stories out there, so many different understandings and realizations, so many small and big incidents to share, that we should endeavor to record them all and share them amongst everyone who wants to hear.
Last night, in the Deity Sewing Room upstairs from Sri Panca-tattva's altar, HG Jananivas prabhu was talking with Ramadevi mataji, the Deities' seamstress, along with Lilasamayi devi (from Italy) and Jalangi devi (from China), and myself, and there were endless stories, just between the four of us. We realized that these stories should be shared. Ramadevi suggested a conference, and Jananivas prabhu said it was a wonderful idea, so this is what we are now doing.
Please share the news with others in your zone who have returned from Mayapur, and those who did not come to Mayapur but who want to share the nectar. So many things have happened in the lives of so many devotees since the arrival of Sri Panca-tattva. It is obvious that we are entering a new phase in ISKCON, and these stories are an encouragement and an inspiration to everyone. Please write in to the conference and share the mercy...

All Vegetarian Omelette
Ingredients
Gram Flour 2 cups
Cabbage head (finely chopped or grated)
Tomato (finely chopped) 1
Green chillies (finely chopped) 4
Turmeric powder a small pinch
Red Chilli powder 3/4 teaspoon
Dry mango powder (Amchoor) - (Optional) 1/4 teaspoon
Cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon
Garam Masala -(Optional) 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Method
Mix the gram flour along with the other listed ingredients and water
just sufficient to make a thin (but not too watery) batter.
Heat about 3-4 tablespoons of oil in a pan and pour out a small portion
of the above batter in it and spread it in the pan just as one would do
for the omelette.
Keep it on a low flame, pour about 1/2 teaspoon of oil all around the
spread batter and put a lid on the pan to cover it.
After about 4-5 minutes, remove the lid and check to see if the omelette
has started puffing at the bottom.
Now turn around the omelette on the other side - if the pan is becoming
dry, you could pour another 1/2 teaspoon of oil around the omelette again.
Continue to cook on a low flame till this side is also crisp and becomes
golden brown.
The All Vegetarian Omelette is ready to be offered and served.
Make the other omelettes in the same way.
Serve them hot with bread and ketchup.
BATTERED TOFU SAVLOYS
Ingredients:
8 thick wooden skewers
8 Tofu saveloys or frankfurters (or Soysages)
plain flour
oil for deep frying
tomato sauce
Batter:
1/4 cup self raising flour
2 TBSP plain flour
1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1/2 cup water
1 little yoghourt slightly beaten
Directions:
Invert wooden skewers through center of Tofu saveloys lengthways, leaving
about 8cm protruding at one end for a handle.
Dust saveloys lightly with flour.
To make batter, place fours, soda, water and egg in a food processor
or blender, process for 10 seconds or until smooth, transfre mixture to
a bowl. Heat oil to moderatley hot in a deep heavy based pan, holding ends
of skewers, dip saveloys one or two at a time into the batter, coating
completely. Drain off excess batter. Holding skewer ends, gently lower
battered saveloys into the hot oil.
Hold for a few seconds until saveloys float unaided.
Cook for 1 minute or until lightly golden. Carefully remove from oil
with tongs and drain on paper towels. Repeat process with remaining saveloys.
Re-dip each cooked saveloy in batter and repeat the process (double batter
them).

Greek Spinach Pie
From: (Evangelos Doussis)
[a light, low-fat dish, brilliant for lunch at work served hot, warm,
or cold]
the dough :
-----------
3 cups all purpose flour
1 cup warm water
2 tbl spoons oil
1/2 spoon oregano
dash of salt
mix ingredients; knead for about 2-3 minutes;
adding flour to until it doesn't stick to the hands -
separate into 3 equal parts
the filling :
------------
about one pound of thawed frozen spinach - if
you prefer the chopped fresh leaves kind
1 tsp hing – asofetida powder (to replace 1/3
white onion in flavour)
1/2 cup finely chopped parsley
1/3 pound feta cheese (totally optional I actually
prefer it without)
salt, pepper, thyme
mix ingredients
the assembly :
-------------
Roll out the 3 dough balls - so that each one is a bit bigger than
your baking pan (I use 8x12 in.) - the amount of dough, for that size will
give you the right thickness
Place the first layer on the greased pan, with ends hanging over the
pan rim - add half the filling
Follow on with the second dough layer - add the rest of the filling
Finish off with the last dough layer; fold the dough layers together
Pluck a few holes, making sure you go through the second layer of dough
Bake for 3/4 hour at around 400F
(from mara)
now ready to offer

ice and let them stand, covered with a weighted lid, for 3 hours.
Drain thoroughly and put the vegetables in a large kettle. Add the sugar,
spices and vinegar and bring almost to a boil, stirring often with a wooden
spoon, but do not boil. Pack the pickles into sterilized jars and
seal. Makes about 4 quarts (4 L.)
Sicilian Stuffed Shells
Serves 4 (or one hungry sankirtan brahmachari)
Ingredients:
8 ounces jumbo shells
1 medium white cabbage heart chopped really really finely
3 teaspoons olive oil
15 ounces ricotta cheese
1/2 cup yellow/golden raisins
1/2 cup chopped green olives
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
1 tsp hing
Cook the shells according to package directions. Rinse, drain and spread on a sheetpan while you prepare the filling.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
In a small saute pan, stir together the white cabbage until soft and going a little brown, with hing and olive oil. Cook over medium heat until the cabbage is wilted, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and stir in the ricotta cheese, raisins, olives, and salt and pepper to taste.
Fill each shell with some of the ricotta mixture. Arrange the shells,
open-side-up, in a baking dish. Spoon the tomato sauce over the shells

until bubbling and hot, about 35-40 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional
5 minutes. Serve hot.
Vedavati's Butterscotch Pudding
Ingredients:
Pudding
1 cup SR Flour
3/4 cup sugar - Mix all together
- melted butter, etc.
1/2 cup milk - Put into buttered
pudding dish on bottom.
60 g butter
Sauce
30 g melted butter with 1 1/2 cups hot water
and 2 tablespoons golden syrup.
Pour gently over pudding mixture and cook for approx 40 minutes in moderate oven.
Variations: Any fresh or canned fruit. Put fruit on bottom and pour over juice. Also carob
Offer and serve hot with cream or custard. Or leave it for the next
day - it is Divine cold too.
Avo Maggie (serves 2 )
The lime in this drink reminds me a little of margaritas or "maggies". Like maggies, this drink is great with a salted rim or just a dash of salt. To salt a glass' rim, pour 1/4" water into a saucer or plate big enough to dunk the rim. Pour a 1/8" layer of salt onto a second plate. Dip the glass' rim into the water, then immediately dip in salt, turning the glass a little if it needs to pick up more salt. Pour drink into glass and serve.
Ingredients:
1 cup pitted and peeled avocado, diced
2 cups cold water, distilled preferred - but
at least purified water
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
3-4 large ice cubes or 1 cup small ice cubes,
optional
Dash of salt, optional
Preparation (5 minutes)
Combine all ingredients in an electric blender and blend until smooth.
If desired, add a dash of salt or salt the rims of serving glasses.
Offer and Serve immediately.

Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always
with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

Four Wives parable:
http://www.hknet.org.nz/4wives.pps
Feeling rather thankful, Indrajit Singh, a farmer climbed to the highest
hill on his farm, raised his arms above his head and yelled,
'God, why did you make my wife, Jaspinder, so beautiful?'
The answer came back, 'So you would love her, my son.'
Then he asked, 'Why did you make her such a good cook?'
'So you would love her, my child.' replied the Almighty.
'Why did you make her such a great housekeeper?'
'Again, so you would love her.'
'But Lord, why did you make her so stupid?' pondered the farmer.
'So she would love you.'
A pakistani, An Indian, a beautiful girl and an old woman are sitting
in a train in Europe.
The train suddenly goes thru a tunnel and ... it gets completely dark. Suddenly there is a kissing sound and then a slap!
The train comes out of the tunnel.
The woman and the Indian are sitting there looking perplexed. The Pakistani is bent over holding his face which is red from an apparent slap.
The old woman is thinking : That pakistani must have tried to kiss that girl and has got slapped.
The Pakistani is thinking : 'Damn it, that Indian must have tried to kiss the girl, she thought it was me and slapped me.'
The girl is thinking : 'That Pakistani must have moved to kiss me, and kissed the Indian instead and got slapped.'
The Indian is thinking, 'If this train goes through another tunnel,
I could make another kissing sound and slap that Pakistani again!'

A man sees in the street two workers performing the following procedure:
The first one is digging a ditch, and the second one, a few feet behind
is covering the ditch with the the sand that was just dug out.
After watching them for a while he could not resist his curiosity and he went to ask them what they are doing and what was the goal in their work.
'This is very simple, mister' said one of the workers. 'Usually we are a team of three: One digs, the other puts communication cable into the ditch and the third one covers it. Unfortunately, the guy who puts the cables into the ditch is sick today, so we are doing the best we can.'
A man who needed a secretary hung a sign in his window that said, 'Secretary
wanted to file and type. Must be bi-lingual.'
Within a few minuted, a dog came trotting into his office with the sign in his mouth. At first the man was irritated that a dog had somehow gotten into the building, so he tried to shoo him away. The dog dropped the sign on the man's desk and said, 'Woof, woof!'
The man gave him a puzzled look and said, 'Don't tell me you're here about the secretary job!' The dog replied, 'Woof, woof!' Skeptically, the man said, 'OK, here! See if you can file these papers.' The dog grabbed the papers in his mouth, and filed them correctly in just a few minutes, trotted back to the man's desk and said, 'Woof, woof!'
The man was amazed, but not quite convinced, so he handed the dog some notes and said, 'Here, see if you can type this up.' The dog took the notes, typed up the paper, and dropped it on the man's desk with another 'Woof, woof!'
The man said, 'Well, I'm convinced you can do the job, but the sign
says that you must be bi-lingual,' to which the dog replied, 'Meow!'

road and saw an old man with a huge white beard and with an a mysterious
air on the ground. His head was tilted with his ear on the ground.
When he saw the man on the bike he said, 'Three men, large car, four horses'.

On the way he saw some guests coming up. They asked him, 'Why are you running so fast?'

"I did 30 years in the Corps," the Marine declared proudly, "and fought in three of my country's wars. Fresh out of boot camp I hit the beach at Okinawa, clawed my way up the blood-soaked sand, and eventually took out an entire enemy machine gun nest with a single grenade. "As a sergeant, I fought in Korea alongside General MacArthur. We pushed back the enemy inch by bloody inch all the way up to the Chinese border, always under a barrage of artillery and small arms fire.
"Finally, as a gunny sergeant, I did three consecutive combat tours in Vietnam. We humped through the mud and razorgrass for 14 hours a day, plagued by rain and mosquitoes, ducking under sniper fire all day and mortar fire all night. In a firefight, we'd fire until our arms ached and our guns were empty, then we'd charge the enemy with bayonets!"
"Ah," said the Sailor with a dismissive wave of his hand, "all shore duty, huh?"

Each day he wrapped his trash in gift paper. Then he put it in a shopping bag. When he parked his car, he left the bag on the front seat with the window open.
When he got back to the car, the garbage had always been collected.
The store was loaded with shoppers and as I headed for the limited items Express lane, the only one that didn't have a long line. a rather large woman, completely ignoring the overhead sign, slipped into the check-out line just in front of me, pushing a cart piled high with groceries.
I was quietly fuming at the anticipated delay, when to my unexpected
delight, the elderly cashier beckoned the woman to come forward, looked
into the cart and asked ever so sweetly,
"So dearie, which six items would you like to buy?"
"I thought you knew where you were going," he replied. "You always know where you're going when I'm driving."

The other man says, "What's the name of the restaurant?"
The first man knits his brow in obvious concentration and finally says to his companion, "Aahh, what is the name of that red flower you give to someone you love?" His friend replies, "A carnation?"
"No. No. The other one," the man says. His friend offers another suggestion, "The poppy?"
"Nahhhh," growls the man. "You know the one that is red and has thorns?" His friend says, "Do you mean a rose?"
"Yes, yes that's it. Thank you!" the first man says. He then turns toward the kitchen and yells, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"
One afternoon, a wealthy lawyer was riding in the back of his limousine
when he saw two pathetic men eating grass by the road side. He ordered
his driver to stop and he got out to investigate, and asked, "Why are you
eating grass?"
"We don't have no money for food," the first man replied.
"Oh, well, you can come with me to my house," insisted the lawyer.
"But, sir, I got a wife and three kids here."
"Bring them along!" replied the lawyer.
"But how 'bout m' friend?"
The lawyer turned to the other man and said, "You come with us, too."
"But, sir, I got a wife and six kids".
"Bring them as well!" answered the lawyer as he headed for his limo.
They all climbed into the car, and once underway, one of the poor
fellows says: "Sir, you are too kind.
Thank you for taking all of us with you."
The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You're gonna love my place . . the grass is almost a foot tall."
After he hung the mirror he reflected on it.
A CHAT WITH GOD
God : Hello. Did you call me?
Me: Called you? No.. who is this?
God : This is GOD. I heard your prayers. So I thought I will chat.
Me: I do pray. Just makes me feel good. I am actually busy now. I am in the midst of something.
God : What are you busy at? Ants are busy too.
Me: Don't know. But I cant find free time. Life has become hectic. It's rush hour all the time.
God : Sure. Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you results. Activity consumes time. Productivity frees it.
Me: I understand. But I still cant figure out. By the way, I was not expecting YOU to buzz me on instant messaging chat.
God : Well I wanted to resolve your fight for time, by giving you some clarity. In this net era, I wanted to reach you through the medium you are comfortable with.
Me: Tell me, why has life become complicated now?
God : Stop analyzing life. Just live it. Analysis is what makes it complicated.
Me: why are we then constantly unhappy?
God : Your today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. You are worrying because you are analyzing. Worrying has become your habit. That's why you are not happy.
Me: But how can we not worry when there is so much uncertainty?
God : Uncertainty is inevitable, but worrying is optional.
Me: But then, there is so much pain due to uncertainty..
God : Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.
Me: If suffering is optional, why do good people always suffer?
God : you think you are the doer of every action and try to falsely claim the result, leave the result with Me.
Me : okay I'll give it a try.
God : Diamond cannot be polished without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don't suffer. With that experience their life become better not bitter.
Me: You mean to say such experience is useful?
God : Yes. In every terms, Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.
Me: But still, why should we go through such tests? Why cant we be free from problems?
God : Problems are Purposeful Roadblocks Offering Beneficial Lessons (to) Enhance Mental Strength. Inner strength comes from struggle and endurance, not when you are free from problems.
Me: Frankly in the midst of so many problems, we don't know where we are heading..
God : If you look outside you will not know where you are heading.Look inside. Looking outside, you dream. Looking inside, you awaken. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides insight.
Me: Sometimes not succeeding fast seems to hurt more than moving in the right direction. What should I do?
God : Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you. Knowing the road ahead is more satisfying than knowing you rode ahead. You work with the compass. Let others work with the clock.
Me: In tough times, how do you stay motivated?
God : Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.
Me: What surprises you about people?
God : when they suffer they ask, "why me?" When they prosper, they never ask "Why me" Everyone wishes to have truth on their side, but few want to be on the side of the truth.
Me: Sometimes I ask, who am I, why am I here. I cant get the answer.
God : Seek not to find who you are, but to determine who you want to be. Stop looking for a purpose as to why you are here. Create it. Life is not a process of discovery but a process of creation.
Me: How can I get the best out of life?
God : Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.
Me: One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.
God: There are no unanswered prayers. At times the answer is NO.
Me: Thank you for this wonderful chat. I am so happy to start the New Year with a new sense of inspiration.
God : Well. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Don't believe your doubts and doubt your beliefs. Life is a mystery to solve not a problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live . Now chant Hare Krishna and be happy.
