The 108th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
of the appearance of
His Divine Grace
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA
http://www.prabhupada108.net/
1896 – 2004
Founder Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness
Celebrated By
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness
The year beginning on Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja September 6th, 2004, and ending with his Vyasa Puja on August 28, 2005 marks the 108th anniversary of his birth. While everyone honors 100th anniversaries, Vaisnavas place great significance on the 108th anniversary, because 108 is a special number. Krsna enjoys with 108 principal gopis (cowherd girls), there are 108 Upanishads, and a round of japa on beads is 108 Hare Krsna mantras. ISKCON has created a special opportunity to glorify Srila Prabhupada on his 108th birthday and throughout the year afterwards. ISKCON's governing body commissioners in their annual meeting this year passed the following resolution.
Whereas: The 108th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's appearance can
bring special inspiration to the devotee community by glorifying Srila
Prabhupada.
Whereas: H.H. Lokanath Swami was successful in performing the service
of Srila Prabhupada's Centennial Global Minister.
Resolved: ISKCON will make the celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th appearance anniversary year a highlight of its activities until Vyasa Puja 2005. H.H. Lokanath Swami will take up the service of global coordinator for this project.
In 1996 ISKCON celebrated Srila Prabhupada's Centennial.
Participation in events far exceeded expectations. Throughout the
Centennial year, followers of Srila Prabhupada made extraordinary efforts
to spread his glories world wide by inundating their countries, states,
and cities with the holy name of Krsna, Krsna prasadam, and Prabhupada's
books. Temples world wide joined in celebrating many spectacular
special events. Streets were named in Prabhupada's honor, and several
biographies about him were published. There were also many wonderful
special achievements and offerings by individuals and groups. but
why was the Centennial so successful? We could only conclude that
it was because Krsna wanted to glorify Srila Prabhupada. Krsna wanted
to show the world that He is know as bhaktanama mana vardhanah, "He who
enhances the reputation of His devotees."
Srila Prabhupada's teachings, which continue to
be felt throughout all parts of ISKCON, are the universal inspiration for
the 108 celebration. All initiated devotees and all followers of
Srila Prabhupada have a high level of awareness, appreciation, and remembrance
of him. They feel connected with him as their siksa guru, accepting
as essential the teaching he gave in his books. Inspired by his powerful
presence, they follow his instructions in their own lives and are able
to bring others to follow them too.
The celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th
anniversary will focus on a series of public events. most of the
international events that were so successful in 1996 will be held again.
The events will bring about a heightened appreciation for Srila Prabhupada
and his movement in the public and increase ISKCON's member's awareness
of being part of a united worldwide movement.
The 108th Celebration is not limited to events.
The spirit of the Celebration is to encourage each ISKCON devotee, member
and follower to make at least one personal offering to Srila Prabhupada
during the year in one or more of the following areas:
1. Help spread Srila Prabhupada's mission by expanding the congregation,
distributing books and chanting the holy name, especially at 108 events.
2. Dedicate oneself to glorifying Srila Prabhupada by personally meaningful
special achievement during the 108th year.
3. Build personal internal strength by commitment to improving both
personal spiritual standards and practices and those of your community.
The 108th Celebration is a great time to introduce
the whole world to Srila Prabhupada and his mission. Let us all take
seriously this very special opportunity, and wholeheartedly glorify Srila
Prabhupada.

TRANSLATION
Arjuna said: O Janardana, O Kesava, why do You want to engage me in this ghastly warfare, if You think that intelligence is better than fruitive work?
PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:
The Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna has very elaborately described the constitution of the soul in the previous chapter, with a view to delivering His intimate friend Arjuna from the ocean of material grief. And the path of realization has been recommended: buddhi-yoga, or Krsna consciousness. Sometimes Krsna consciousness is misunderstood to be inertia, and one with such a misunderstanding often withdraws to a secluded place to become fully Krsna conscious by chanting the holy name of Lord Krsna. But without being trained in the philosophy of Krsna consciousness, it is not advisable to chant the holy name of Krsna in a secluded place, where one may acquire only cheap adoration from the innocent public. Arjuna also thought of Krsna consciousness or buddhi-yoga, or intelligence in spiritual advancement of knowledge, as something like retirement from active life and the practice of penance and austerity at a secluded place. In other words, he wanted to skillfully avoid the fighting by using Krsna consciousness as an excuse. But as a sincere student, he placed the matter before his master and questioned Krsna as to his best course of action. In answer, Lord Krsna elaborately explained karma-yoga, or work in Krsna consciousness, in this Third Chapter.

(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental
Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)
Srila Prabhupada Tells a Story
One time in India, while Srila Prabhupada was staying in Mayapur, two of Srila Prabhupada's Western-born sannyasis visited a temple and heard an odd comment from a pujari. While Srila Prabhupada's men were taking darsana of the Deities, the pujari seemed to appreciate their reverence and demeanor.
"Continue to render devotional service," the pujari brahmana advised them, "and maybe in your next life you will be born as a brahmana."
The disciples later went to Srila Prabhupada and told him of the incident. Prabhupada smiled and told a story.
Once there was an old lady who lived in a remote village. One day the British district magistrate visited her town. This old lady had been entangled in a quarrel regarding possession of land, which some of her relatives were trying to take from her. Friends advised that she see the magistrate and present the matter to him for a settlement. When she did so, the magistrate immediately ruled in her favor and made sure the land was put in her name. Delighted, the old lady attempted to bless the magistrate.
"I bless you," she said, "that in your next life you will become a police constable."
In the old lady's mind, Srila Prabhupada explained, the office of police constable was the highest thing she could imagine. "Similarly," said Srila Prabhupada, "these caste brahmanas do not know that pure devotional service is much higher than being born as a brahmana."
Bhakti-caru Swami, interview. Although the Hindu pujari naively blessed the devotees to become Hindu brahmanas in their next life, he at least appreciated their reverence and devotion in the temple. Because he appreciated their behavior in his own way, he wanted to bless them and wish them well. Proper behavior by Prabhupada's followers is a credit to Prabhupada, to the Krsna consciousness movement, and to the devotees. The credit to the devotees, however, has to be earned; it is not automatic. Prabhupada writes in The Nectar of Instruction, "Indeed, whether the devotees come from a family of previous acaryas or from an ordinary family, they should be treated equally. One should not think, 'Oh, here is an American gosvami,' and discriminate against him. Nor should one think, 'Here is a nityananda-vamsa-gosvami.' ..a According to the statements of Srila Rupa Gosvami in this verse, an American gosvami and a gosvami in a family of acaryas are nondifferent." If we go at all to a temple or place of pilgrimage, it should be for our devotional service, and we should do it with humility and purity to properly represent Prabhupada. Prabhupada also said that wherever we go in the world, if we follow the rules and behave properly, people will worship the devotees. Even if the brahmana in the temple does not bless us, however, Prabhupada and Krsna will be pleased with our proper public behavior.

Prabhupada: (indistinct) ...how you can reject one and accept another. It must be properly utilized.
Reporter: Yes, yes.
Prabhupada: Just like if one has got money, he cannot... He can utilize it for good purposes, and he can utilize it for bad purposes. So money is not bad. It is bad when the purpose is bad. It is good when the purpose is good.
Reporter: Yes, yes.
Prabhupada: Similarly himsa, it is used for... Just like in Manu-samhita it is said that the murderer should be hanged. So this is also himsa, to get him a man hanged. But Manu-samhita says that this kind of himsa is necessary. Because the man who's committed murder, if he's hanged, then in this life all his sinful activities finished. Otherwise, in his next life he has to suffer so many things. So it is the duty of the king to take his life so that he may be relieved from other sinful reaction. So according to sastra, himsa..., ahimsa is good, but when there is necessity, himsa is also good.
Reporter: Yes. When there is right himsa, then it becomes a right action.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Reporter: And a right action is inherently inspired with love and devotion to Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Reporter: And therefore it is no more himsa. But when the devilish...
Prabhupada: And actually it is not himsa.
Reporter: Actually it is not himsa, exactly, but...
Prabhupada: Just like father gives a slap.
Reporter: Yeah, it is not himsa.
Prabhupada: It is not himsa.
Reporter: Yeah.
Prabhupada: Similarly, the himsa, so-called himsa, when it is directed by Krsna, that is not himsa. That is love.
Reporter: Yeah. But when it is not directed by Krsna...
Prabhupada: Then it is himsa.
Reporter: Yeah. Then it is himsa. And I am against that himsa which is not directed by Krsna.
Prabhupada: Yeah, that's all right, that's all right.
Reporter: (laughs) Yes. And especially today in the society we are all living in, nuclear age where all the power of destruction in the hands of those who are not devotees of Krsna is...
Prabhupada: That is himsa.
Reporter: That is himsa.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Reporter: Yeah. Therefore we are trying to make how you can, I mean...
Prabhupada: That you have understood. That is my point.
Reporter: Yes.
Prabhupada: That so-called himsa, when it is directed by Krsna, is not himsa.
Reporter: Yeah, exactly. I agree. That's, that's...
Prabhupada: The same example as I gave, gave you. That when the king condemns a murderer to death, it is not himsa. It is doing good to him.
Reporter: Yeah. But only if the king is a devotee of Krsna.
Prabhupada: No... King is... King means a devotee. Because the king did not remain devotee, now monarchy is abolished. King means Krsna's representative, nara-devata. The king is supposed to act on behalf of Krsna. Just like Krsna's business is paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam [Bg. 4.8].
Reporter: Yes, yes.
Prabhupada: Similarly, king's business is to give protection to the faithful and punish the unfaithful.
Reporter: But today's kings...
Prabhupada: Today's no... I'm speaking... Today's good and tomorrow is bad, that is not.
Reporter: Yeah, yeah.
Prabhupada: I'm speaking the principle. The king must be representative of God. Therefore we offer so much honor to the King. Exactly like God. Why? Because King is supposed to be representative of God. Our Vedic conception is catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg. 4.13]. Brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. This catur-varna. It is the king's duty, government's duty, to see that a person claiming to be brahmana, whether he's acting as a brahmana. Nowadays that... Such supervision is not there. Therefore a man acting as sudra, but he's claiming to be brahmana.
Reporter: Yeah, yeah, yeah. (laughs)
Prabhupada: Isn't it?
Reporter: Yeah.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY
When we are children, innocent, we have no bad
habits, but as we grow and associate with bad
company, we also acquire all these bad habits. To
give up all these bad habits means we have to
associate with sadhus or devotees, saintly persons.
Then we can give it up. This is called anathanivrtti,
means giving up all unwanted bad habits.

TRANSLATION
Being full of contradictions, all
forms of religion but bhägavata-dharma work under conceptions of fruitive
results and distinctions of "you and I" and "yours and mine." The followers
of Çrémad-Bhägavatam have no such consciousness. They
are all Kåñëa conscious, thinking that they are Kåñëa's
and Kåñëa is theirs. There are other, low-class religious
systems, which are contemplated for the killing of enemies or the gain
of mystic power, but such religious systems, being full of passion and
envy, are impure and temporary. Because they are full of envy, they are
full of irreligion.
PURPORT
Bhägavata-dharma has no
contradictions. Conceptions of "your religion" and "my religion" are completely
absent from bhägavata-dharma. Bhägavata-dharma means following
the orders given by the Supreme Lord, Bhagavän, as stated in Bhagavad-gétä:
sarva-dharmän parityajya mäm ekaà çaraëaà
vraja [Bg. 18.66]. God is one, and God is for everyone. Therefore everyone
must surrender to God. That is the pure conception of religion. Whatever
God orders constitutes religion (dharmaà tu säkñäd
bhagavat-praëétam [SB 6.3.19]). In bhägavata-dharma there
is no question of "what you believe" and "what I believe." Everyone must
believe in the Supreme Lord and carry out His orders. Änukülyena
kåñëänuçélanam: [Cc. Madhya 19.167]
whatever Kåñëa says—whatever God says—should be directly
carried out. That is dharma, religion.
If one is actually Kåñëa conscious, he cannot have any enemies. Since his only engagement is to induce others to surrender to Kåñëa, or God, how can he have enemies? If one advocates the Hindu religion, the Muslim religion, the Christian religion, this religion or that religion, there will be conflicts. History shows that the followers of religious systems without a clear conception of God have fought with one another. There are many instances of this in human history, but systems of religion that do not concentrate upon service to the Supreme are temporary and cannot last for long because they are full of envy. There are many activities directed against such religious systems, and therefore one must give up the idea of "my belief" and "your belief." Everyone should believe in God and surrender unto Him. That is bhägavata-dharma.
Bhägavata-dharma is not a concocted sectarian belief, for it entails research to find how everything is connected with Kåñëa (éçäväsyam idaà sarvam [Éço mantra 1]). According to the Vedic injunctions, sarvaà khalv idaà brahma: Brahman, the Supreme, is present in everything. Bhägavata-dharma captures this presence of the Supreme. Bhägavata-dharma does not consider everything in the world to be false. Because everything emanates from the Supreme, nothing can be false; everything has some use in the service of the Supreme. For example, we are now dictating into a microphone and recording on a dictating machine, and thus we are finding how the machine can be connected to the Supreme Brahman. Since we are using this machine in the service of the Lord, it is Brahman. This is the meaning of sarvaà khalv idaà brahma. Everything is Brahman because everything can be used for the service of the Supreme Lord. Nothing is mithyä, false; everything is factual.
Bhägavata-dharma is called sarvotkåñöa, the best of all religious systems, because those who follow bhägavata-dharma are not envious of anyone. Pure bhägavatas, pure devotees, invite everyone, without envy, to join the Kåñëa consciousness movement. A devotee is therefore exactly like the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Suhådaà sarva-bhütänäm: [Bg. 5.29] he is the friend of all living entities. Therefore this is the best of all religious systems. Whereas so-called religions are meant for a particular type of person who believes in a particular way, such discrimination has no place in Kåñëa consciousness, or bhägavata-dharma. If we scrutinize the religious systems meant for worship of demigods or anyone else but the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we will find that they are full of envy and therefore impure. (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srimad Bhagavatam text & purport 6:16:41.)

TRANSLATION
How can a religious system that
produces envy of one's self and of others be beneficial for oneself and
for them? What is auspicious about following such a system? What is actually
to be gained? By causing pain to one's own self due to self-envy and by
causing pain to others, one arouses Your anger and practices irreligion.
PURPORT
Any religious system but the process
of bhägavata-dharma-service as an eternal servant of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead—is a system of envy of one's own self and of others. For example,
there are many systems of religion in which animal sacrifices are recommended.
Such animal sacrifices are inauspicious both for the performer and for
the animal. Although one is sometimes permitted to sacrifice an animal
before the goddess Kälé and eat it instead of purchasing meat
from a slaughterhouse, permission to eat meat after a sacrifice in the
presence of the goddess Kälé is not the order of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. It is simply a concession for the miserable person
who will not give up eating meat. It is meant to restrict his desire for
unrestricted meat-eating. Such a religious system is condemned. Therefore
Kåñëa says, sarva-dharmän parityajya mäm ekaà
çaraëaà vraja: [Bg. 18.66] "Give up all other duties
and surrender unto Me." That is the last word in religion.
One may argue that the sacrifice
of animals is recommended in the Vedas. This recommendation, however, is
a restriction. Without Vedic restrictions on the purchase of meat, people
will purchase meat from the market, which will be overflooded with meat
shops, and slaughterhouses will increase. To restrict this, sometimes the
Vedas say that one may eat meat after sacrificing an insignificant animal
like a goat before the goddess Kälé. In any case, a system
of religion in which animal sacrifices are recommended is inauspicious
for those who perform the sacrifices and for the animals. Envious persons
who perform ostentatious animal sacrifices are condemned in Bhagavad-gétä
(16.17) as follows:
ätma-sambhävitäù
stabdhä
dhana-mäna-madänvitäù
yajante näma-yajïais te
dambhenävidhi-pürvakam
"Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes perform sacrifices in name only without following any rules or regulations." Sometimes animal sacrifices are performed very gorgeously with grand arrangements for worshiping the goddess Kälé, but such festivals, although performed in the name of yajïa, are not actually yajïa, for yajïa means to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore it is recommended that in this age specifically, yajïaiù saìkértana-präyair yajanti hi sumedhasaù: [SB 11.5.32] those who have good intelligence satisfy the yajïa-puruña, Viñëu, by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra. Envious persons, however, are condemned by the Supreme Personality of Godhead as follows:
ahaìkäraà balaà
darpaà
kämaà krodhaà
ca saàçritäù
mäm ätma-para-deheñu
pradviñanto 'bhyasüyakäù
tän ahaà dviñataù
krürän
saàsäreñu narädhamän
kñipämy ajasram açubhän
äsuréñv eva yoniñu
"Bewildered by false ego, strength,
pride, lust and anger, the demon becomes envious of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, who is situated in his own body and in the bodies of others,
and blasphemes against the real religion. Those who are envious and mischievous,
who are the lowest among men, are cast by Me into the ocean of material
existence, into various demoniac species of life." (Bg. 16.18-19) These
persons are condemned by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as indicated
by the words tava kopaù. A person who commits murder is envious
of himself and also the person he has killed, for the result of committing
murder is that he will be arrested and hanged. If one transgresses the
laws of a man-made government, he may escape being killed by the state,
but one cannot escape the laws of God. A killer of any animal must be killed
in his next life by the same animal. This is the law of nature. One must
follow the instructions of the Supreme Lord: sarva-dharmän parityajya
mäm ekaà çaraëaà vraja [Bg. 18.66]. If one
follows any other system of religion, he is subject to punishment by the
Supreme Personality of Godhead in many different ways. Therefore if one
follows a concocted system of religion, he is envious not only of others
but also of himself. Consequently his system of religion is useless.
Çrémad-Bhägavatam
(1.2.8) says:
dharmaù svanuñöhitaù
puàsäà
viñvaksena-kathäsu yaù
notpädayed yadi ratià
çrama eva hi kevalam
"Duties (dharma) executed by men, regardless of occupation, are only so much useless labor if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the Supreme Lord." Following a system of religion that does not awaken one's Kåñëa consciousness, or God consciousness, is merely a waste of time and labor.

My dear Lord, one's occupational
duty is instructed in Çrémad-Bhägavatam and Bhagavad-gétä
according to Your point of view, which never deviates from the highest
goal of life. Those who follow their occupational duties under Your supervision,
being equal to all living entities, moving and nonmoving, and not considering
high and low, are called Äryans. Such Äryans worship You, the
Supreme Personality of Godhead.
PURPORT
Bhägavata-dharma and kåñëa-kathä
are identical. Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu wanted everyone
to become a guru and preach the instructions of Kåñëa
everywhere from Bhagavad-gétä, Çrémad-Bhägavatam,
the Puräëas, Vedänta-sütra and similar Vedic literatures.
Äryans, who are advanced in civilization, follow bhägavata-dharma.
Prahläda Mahäräja, although merely a child of five years,
recommended:
kaumära äcaret präjïo
dharmän bhägavatän
iha
durlabhaà mänuñaà
janma
tad apy adhruvam arthadam
(SB 7.6.1)
Prahläda Mahäräja
preached bhägavata-dharma among his classmates as soon as an opportunity
was afforded by the absence of his teachers from the classroom. He said
that from the very beginning of life, from the age of five, children should
be instructed about bhägavata-dharma because the human form of life,
which is very rarely obtained, is meant for understanding this subject.
Bhägavata-dharma means living
according to the instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In
Bhagavad-gétä we find that the Supreme Lord has arranged human
society in four social divisions, namely brähmaëa, kñatriya,
vaiçya and çüdra. Again, the Puräëas and other
Vedic literatures set forth four äçramas, which are the divisions
of spiritual life. Therefore bhägavata-dharma means the varëäçrama-dharma
of the four social and four spiritual divisions.
The members of human society who strictly follow the principles of bhägavata-dharma and live according to the instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are called Äryans or ärya. A civilization of Äryans who strictly follow the instructions of the Lord and never deviate from those instructions is perfect. Such civilized men do not discriminate between trees, animals, human beings and other living entities. paëòitäù sama-darçinaù: [Bg. 5.18] because they are completely educated in Kåñëa consciousness, they see all living beings equally. Äryans do not kill even a small plant unnecessarily, not to speak of cutting trees for sense gratification. At the present moment, throughout the world, killing is prominent. Men are killing trees, they are killing animals, and they are killing other human beings also, all for sense gratification. This is not an Äryan civilization. As stated here, sthira-cara-sattva-kadambeñv apåthag-dhiyaù. The word apåthag-dhiyaù indicates that Äryans do not distinguish between lower and higher grades of life. All life should be protected. All living beings have a right to live, even the trees and plants. This is the basic principle of an Äryan civilization. Apart from the lower living entities, those who have come to the platform of human civilization should be divided into a society of brähmaëas, kñatriyas, vaiçyas and çüdras. The brähmaëas should follow the instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as stated in Bhagavad-gétä and other Vedic literatures. The criterion must be guëa and karma. In other words, one should acquire the qualities of a brähmaëa, kñatriya, vaiçya or çüdra and act accordingly. This is the civilization accepted by the Äryans. Why do they accept it? They accept it because they are very much eager to satisfy Kåñëa. This is perfect civilization.
Äryans do not deviate from the instructions of Kåñëa, nor do they have doubts about Kåñëa, but non-Äryans and other demoniac people fail to follow the instructions of Bhagavad-gétä and Çrémad-Bhägavatam. This is because they have been trained in sense gratification at the cost of all other living entities. Nünaà pramattaù kurute vikarma: [SB 5.5.4] their only business is to indulge in all kinds of forbidden activities for sense gratification. Yad indriya-prétaya äpåëoti: they deviate in this way because they want to gratify their senses. They have no other occupation or ambition. Their method of civilization is condemned in the previous verse. Kaù kñemo nija-parayoù kiyän värthaù sva-para-druhä dharmeëa: "What is the meaning of a civilization that kills oneself and others?"
This verse, therefore, advises that everyone become a member of the Äryan civilization and accept the instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One should conduct his social, political and religious affairs according to His instructions. We are spreading the Kåñëa consciousness movement to try to establish a society the way that Kåñëa wants it. This is the meaning of Kåñëa consciousness. We are therefore presenting Bhagavad-gétä as it is and kicking out all kinds of mental concoction. Fools and rascals interpret Bhagavad-gétä in their own way. When Kåñëa says, man-manä bhava mad-bhakto mad-yäjé mäà namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]—"Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me"—they comment that it is not Kåñëa to whom we must surrender. Thus they derive imaginary meanings from Bhagavad-gétä. The Kåñëa consciousness movement, however, strictly follows bhägavata-dharma, the instructions of Bhagavad-gétä and Çrémad-Bhägavatam for the complete welfare of human society. One who misinterprets Bhagavad-gétä, twisting out some meaning for his sense gratification, is a non-Äryan. Therefore commentaries on Bhagavad-gétä by such persons should be immediately rejected. One should try to follow Bhagavad-gétä as it is. In Bhagavad-gétä (12.6-7) Lord Çré Kåñëa says:
ye tu sarväëi karmäëi
mayi sannyasya mat-paräù
ananyenaiva yogena
mäà dhyäyanta upäsate
teñäm ahaà samuddhartä

"For one who worships Me, giving up all his activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, who has fixed his mind upon Me, O son of Påthä, for him I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death."

My Lord, it is not impossible for
one to be immediately freed from all material contamination by seeing You.
Not to speak of seeing You personally, merely by hearing the holy name
of Your Lordship only once, even caëòälas, men of the
lowest class, are freed from all material contamination. Under the circumstances,
who will not be freed from material contamination simply by seeing You?
PURPORT
As stated in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam
(9.5.16), yan-näma-çruti-mätreëa pumän bhavati
nirmalaù: simply by hearing the holy name of the Lord, one is immediately
purified. Therefore, in this age of Kali, when all people are very contaminated,
the chanting of the holy name of the Lord is recommended as the only means
of improvement.

[Cc. Ädi 17.21]
"In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way." (Båhan-näradéya Puräëa) Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu introduced this chanting of the holy name five hundred years ago, and now through the Kåñëa consciousness movement, the Hare Kåñëa movement, we are actually seeing that men who are considered to belong to the lowest class are being delivered from all sinful activities simply by hearing the holy name of the Lord. Saàsära, material existence, is a result of sinful actions. Everyone in this material world is condemned, yet as there are different grades of prisoners, there are different grades of men. All of them, in all statuses of life, are suffering. To stop the suffering of material existence, one must take to the Hare Kåñëa movement of saìkértana or Kåñëa conscious life.
Herein it is said, yan-näma sakåc chravaëät: the holy name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is so powerful that if once heard without offenses, it can purify the lowest of men (kiräta-hüëändhra-pulinda-pulkaçäù). Such men, who are called caëòälas, are less than çüdras, but they also can be purified simply by hearing the holy name of the Lord, not to speak of personally seeing the Lord. From our present position, the Supreme Personality of Godhead can be personally seen as the Deity in the temple. The Deity of the Lord is not different from the Supreme Lord. Because we cannot see the Supreme Lord with our present blunt eyes, the Lord has kindly consented to come before us in a form we can see. Therefore the Deity in the temple should not be considered material. By offering food to the Deity and by decorating and serving the Deity, one gets the same result that one derives from serving the Lord personally in Vaikuëöha.

Therefore, my dear Lord, simply
seeing You has now wiped away all the contamination of sinful activities
and their results of material attachment and lusty desires, which always
filled my mind and the core of my heart. Whatever is predicted by the great
sage Närada Muni cannot be otherwise. In other words, I have obtained
Your audience as a result of being trained by Närada Muni.
PURPORT
This is the process of the perfect
way. One must take lessons from authorities like Närada, Vyäsa
and Asita, and follow their principles. Then one will be able to see the
Supreme Personality of Godhead even with one's own eyes. One only needs
training. Ataù çré-kåñëa-nämädi

eyes and other senses we cannot perceive the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
but if we engage our senses in the service of the Lord according to the
instructions of the authorities, it will be possible to see Him. As soon
as one sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all the sinful reactions
in the core of one's heart are certainly vanquished.

You; bhagavate—Your Lordship; sakala—all; jagat—of the cosmic manifestation;
sthiti—of the maintenance; laya—dissolution; udaya—and creation; éçäya—unto
the Supreme Lord; duravasita—impossible to understand; ätma-gataye—whose
own position; ku-yoginäm—of those who are attached to the objects
of the senses; bhidä—by the false understanding of separateness; parama-haàsäya—unto
the supreme pure.
TRANSLATION
My dear Lord, You are the creator,
maintainer and annihilator of this cosmic manifestation, but persons who
are too materialistic and who always see separateness do not have eyes
with which to see You. They cannot understand Your real position, and therefore
they conclude that the cosmic manifestation is independent of Your opulence.
My Lord, You are the supreme pure, and You are full in all six opulences.
Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.
PURPORT
Atheistic men think that the cosmic
manifestation has come about by chance, by a combination of matter, without
reference to God. Materialistic so-called chemists and atheistic philosophers
always try to avoid even the name of God in relation to the cosmic manifestation.
For them God's creation is impossible to understand because they are too
materialistic. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is paramahaàsa,
or the supreme pure, whereas those who are sinful, being very much attached
to material sense enjoyment and therefore engaging in material activities
like asses, are the lowest of men. All their so-called scientific knowledge
is null and void because of their atheistic temperament. Thus they cannot
understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

TRANSLATION
A person in full consciousness of
Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities,
the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher
of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.
PURPORT
The conditioned souls within the clutches of the illusory energy are all anxious to attain peace in the material world. But they do not know the formula for peace, which is explained in this part of the Bhagavad-gétä. The greatest peace formula is simply this: Lord Kåñëa is the beneficiary in all human activities. Men should offer everything to the transcendental service of the Lord because He is the proprietor of all planets and the demigods thereon. No one is greater than He. He is greater than the greatest of the demigods, Lord Çiva and Lord Brahmä. In the Vedas (Çvetäçvatara Upaniñad 6.7) the Supreme Lord is described as tam éçvaräëäà paramaà maheçvaraà. Under the spell of illusion, living entities are trying to be lords of all they survey, but actually they are dominated by the material energy of the Lord. The Lord is the master of material nature, and the conditioned souls are under the stringent rules of material nature. Unless one understands these bare facts, it is not possible to achieve peace in the world either individually or collectively. This is the sense of Kåñëa consciousness: Lord Kåñëa is the supreme predominator, and all living entities, including the great demigods, are His subordinates. One can attain perfect peace only in complete Kåñëa consciousness.
This Fifth Chapter is a practical explanation of Kåñëa consciousness, generally known as karma-yoga. The question of mental speculation as to how karma-yoga can give liberation is answered herewith. To work in Kåñëa consciousness is to work with the complete knowledge of the Lord as the predominator. Such work is not different from transcendental knowledge. Direct Kåñëa consciousness is bhakti-yoga, and jïäna-yoga is a path leading to bhakti-yoga. Kåñëa consciousness means to work in full knowledge of one's relationship with the Supreme Absolute, and the perfection of this consciousness is full knowledge of Kåñëa, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A pure soul is the eternal servant of God as His fragmental part and parcel. He comes into contact with mäyä (illusion) due to the desire to lord it over mäyä, and that is the cause of his many sufferings. As long as he is in contact with matter, he has to execute work in terms of material necessities. Kåñëa consciousness, however, brings one into spiritual life even while one is within the jurisdiction of matter, for it is an arousing of spiritual existence by practice in the material world. The more one is advanced, the more he is freed from the clutches of matter. The Lord is not partial toward anyone. Everything depends on one's practical performance of duties in Kåñëa consciousness, which helps one control the senses in every respect and conquer the influence of desire and anger. And one who stands fast in Kåñëa consciousness, controlling the abovementioned passions, remains factually in the transcendental stage, or brahma-nirväëa. The eightfold yoga mysticism is automatically practiced in Kåñëa consciousness because the ultimate purpose is served. There is a gradual process of elevation in the practice of yama, niyama, äsana, präëäyäma, pratyähära, dhäraëä, dhyäna and samädhi. But these only preface perfection by devotional service, which alone can award peace to the human being. It is the highest perfection of life.
Thus end the Bhaktivedanta Purports to the Fifth Chapter of the Çrémad Bhagavad-gétä in the matter of Karma-yoga, or Action in Kåñëa Consciousness.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Hare Krsna!
In the download section of my website http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.
The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.
The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."
You will also find a PDF copy of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. U.K.: Londoners Defiant After Latest Attacks
http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2005/07/94924986-e9a7-4057-abc6-dabbbbf7bbcf.html
Commuters in the British capital remain defiant after an explosives attack that targeted London's transportation system, the second in two weeks. Londoners vow that they won't be frightened into disrupting their daily routine. Explosive devices were placed on three underground trains and a double-decker bus in different parts of London yesterday; the near-simultaneous blasts caused severe disruptions, but no serious injuries were reported. RFE/RL spoke yesterday with Londoners at the scene of one of the incidents, at London's Warren Street subway station.
London, 22 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Police helicopters buzzed overhead, and sirens wailed. Barriers prevented commuters from entering London's subway system, and many roads were closed. Tens of thousands of Londoners walked home, as the city attempted to cope with yet another series of attacks on its subway and bus systems.
But there was no panic; simply resolve not to let the attacks disrupt normal life.
"I am not worried. I get more angry, actually, rather than worried...about them trying to disrupt our lives, and trying to do this sort of thing. But it won't stop me from coming into London or stop me from going into work, or anything like that," said 28-year-old Irene, a Londoner who was sent home from her office near the Warren Street subway station, the scene of one of the incidents. "You know, you can't just stop living because of these people who are trying this sort of stuff. It's just not right. I think Londoners are made of pretty strong stuff, and they'll carry on coming to work, carry on coming to the city, as they have always done, basically."
Joanna, 33, works next to the Warren Street station.
"I think usually we're concerned on the day the trouble happens, and after that, we feel a bit more secure -- after a day or two," she said. "We're a bit used to it over here."
Reports say casualties from the latest attacks might have been limited
by the possible failure of the devices to trigger a large blast. Investigators
are looking at the remains of the devices to find fingerprints or other
clues that could lead to the perpetrators.
"You know, you can't just stop living because of these people who are
trying this sort of stuff. I think Londoners are made of pretty strong
stuff, and they'll carry on coming to work, carry on coming to the city,
as they have always done, basically."
London Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair said police believe the intention of the devices was to kill people in a manner similar to the 7 July London attacks, which left at least 56 people dead. But whether the latest attacks are connected to the earlier bombings remains to be determined.
"I don't think I am in a position to say that it is connected. I think that will take a little time. There is a resonance here, isn't there? I mean, these are four attacks; there were four attacks before," Blair said. "Whether or not this is directly connected in the sense that it was carried out by the same group of people, however loosely -- I think it's going to take just a little bit longer before we can qualify that."
Fifty-eight-year-old Charles works at University College Hospital, which is next to the Warren Street subway station. He and his co-workers were sent home after special police squads searched the grounds, apparently believing that one of the attackers may have been hiding on the premises.
"We're not worried at all. We're just -- we'll get on with our lives, and they won't deter us," he said. "We work in the hospital that they've just got the siege on at the moment, and everybody there has good spirits. It won't bother us at all."
Tony, 31, works as a computer specialist in a nearby block of offices. He said he's angry at Islamic extremists who are being held in detention in Britain.
"I am annoyed now because of all this going on now. I think they should -- and I think everybody feels the same -- send these people back to their country," he said. "These people who are in prison, you know, send them back. No more argument. Let's be gone with them, you know. I think we've all had enough now."
Sharon, a shop assistant, was amused by Londoners' resilience.
"The good thing today is that rumor has it there were no injuries or no deaths. But no violence is bearable, but don't you think that when something like this happens, nobody will defeat London, will they?" she said, and added in a reference to a group of Hare Krishna followers playing music nearby, "You know, you get the Hare Krishna. I think it's wonderful."
Twenty-five-year-old David is an accountant who is rushing to see some clients. He said he's optimistic that police may find the latest bombers because so much of the devices remain intact.
"There is not a lot you can do about it, so there is not a lot of point in worrying, really," he said. "If it happens, it happens, doesn't it? It is a bit more encouraging than last time, I suppose, isn't it?"
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attacks.
Prime Minister Tony Blair appealed for calm in the wake of the incidetns, urging Britons to continue with their business as normally as possible.

Jul 22, LONDON (GUARDIAN UNLTD.)— On an ordinary afternoon, Tottenham Court Road would be full of tourists and Londoners looking for bargains at its furniture and electronics shops.
But this was not an ordinary day. Warren Street tube station, at the end of the road, had been closed in a bomb attack - two weeks to the day after four suicide blasts on London's transport network killed 56 people.
As a result, Tottenham Court Road, on this bright sunny afternoon, looked like a ghost town. Police had evacuated virtually the whole length of the street, sealing off the side roads with blue and white tape.
The only people allowed on to the street were a gaggle of reporters, who were at first stationed outside the upmarket Heals furniture store, opposite Goodge Street tube station.
As a helicopter clattered overhead in a gloriously blue sky, the police moved away the few stragglers, bellowing: "Can you move back, please, for your own safety."
One unfortunate merchant had to dismantle his stall - an elaborate structure full of suitcases, handbags and wallets - after the police told him to close up.
Eventually, officers allowed the reporters to move closer to the Warren Street, where a man had earlier been seen running towards the nearby University College Hospital.
Although the streets were empty, people had stayed inside their shops and offices. Three women employees at the travel agent Going Places stood behind the glass doors, looking out at the unfamiliar scene.
Next door, office workers stood on a balcony as police cars and fire engines tore past, sirens wailing.
By around 4pm, Tottenham Court Road began to return to normal. The shops started reopening and the traffic returned, although police kept the street sealed off around 200 yards from Warren Street tube.
Gilly, whose husband Steve runs the nearby Kingsley photographic shop, said police had asked them to close up and stay inside at around lunchtime.
"I had never heard so many sirens - gosh, it was loud," she said. "The police pulled over all the buses and evacuated them.
"It's sad for humankind, it's happening again. I hadn't thought it would happen so quickly, just after two weeks. But why should any of us be surprised?"
Gilly said there had no significant drop in takings since the attacks of two weeks ago and, as she was speaking, a group of Hare Krishna, chanting and banging on their tambourines, walked past.
She laughed and said: "Look at that. That is so London. These terrorists are bonkers if they think they can make a difference. Not in London they won't."
Death of a 'TV dinner' salesman
By Laura Smith-Spark
BBC News
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/americas/4703523.stm
Gerry Thomas, the US salesman who brought the concept of the TV dinner to the world, has died of cancer aged 83.
Fifty years ago, his idea of packaging frozen dinners in a compartmentalised foil tray was to change forever the way meal times were viewed.
Instead of families sitting down together around a table to eat a home-cooked dinner, they could combine dining with the new 1950s hobby - watching television.
Gerry Thomas' initial brainwave in 1953 was a clever solution to his company's post-Thanksgiving surplus of turkey.
Buttered peas
Mr Thomas, then a marketing executive for CA Swanson and Sons, of Nebraska, had been handed the challenge of finding a home for 270 tons of unused poultry.
While travelling on business, he spotted a metal tray being tested out for in-flight hot dinners, and the idea of pre-packaged frozen dinners was born.
It's a terrible invention as far as family life is concerned
Dr Pat Spungin
UK campaigner on family meals
"It was just a single compartment tray with foil," he recalled in a 1999 interview with news agency AP. "I asked if I could borrow it and stuck it in the pocket of my overcoat."
The first Swanson TV Dinner - made up of three sections containing turkey with cornbread dressing and gravy, sweet potatoes and buttered peas - went on sale in 1953 priced at 98 cents.
Ten million of the cartons, innovatively packaged to look like a TV screen complete with knobs, disappeared from US shop shelves in 10 months, as viewers settled down to munch as they watched number one show I Love Lucy.
The TV dinner's runaway success led to a pay rise for Mr Thomas, booming business for Swanson and a culinary trend of convenience which shows little sign of falling from favour.
'Eating in a line'
However, Mr Thomas' invention is not remembered fondly by all.
"He has a lot to answer for," UK child psychologist and parenting expert Doctor Pat Spungin told the BBC News website. "It's a terrible invention as far as family life is concerned."
Dr Spungin - who has set up the Back to the Table campaign in the UK to encourage families to eat home-cooked meals together - says the problem is that the TV dinner destroys conversation.
"Even if you have seven people together eating TV dinners, they are eating in a line and that's not conducive to communication," Dr Spungin said.
"Eating together has always been a mark of family life. You also eat together as a sign of hospitality and welcome.
"[The TV dinner] is a big problem in the UK and America but I think in countries with a stronger food/family tradition, like Italy and Spain, the concept of the TV dinner is probably regarded with horror."
'Hate mail'
In the UK, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has launched a high-profile campaign to improve children's diets by cutting down on processed food.
Even in its early days, the TV dinner was not universally well received.
Mr Thomas received "hate mail from men who wanted their wives to cook from scratch like their mothers did", he said.
But Robert Thompson, director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University, believes it is unfair to blame Mr Thomas for the decline of home-cooked food.
He was a gourmet cook. He never ate the TV Dinners Widow Susan Thomas
The advent of the TV dinner coincided with a changing society where women were increasingly going to work and had less time to cook, he told AP.
"Some people claim the TV dinner was the first step toward breaking up the American family because it made it possible for everybody to eat in a 'modular' way," he said.
"That was going to happen anyway. The redefinition of the American family was going on anyway."
It was not until the 1990s that Mr Thomas' role in inventing what became a national icon was fully recognised. The original aluminium tray can now be seen in the Smithsonian Institution.
Mr Thomas said of his invention: "It's a pleasure being identified as the person who did this because it changed the way people live. It's part of the fabric of our society."
But wife Susan has admitted her late husband's pride did not extend to consuming the fruit of his labours.
"He was a gourmet cook. He never ate the TV dinners," she said.

Novelty acts - Religious symbols for major faiths crack
pop culture
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2004/oct/02/novelty_acts/
By Jim Baker (Contact)
Saturday, October 2, 2004
Is nothing sacred?
If you take a look at the irreverent -- some would argue borderline blasphemous -- way that American popular culture treats the icons and symbols of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism, the answer is an emphatic "no."
The lowbrow lampooning of traditionally beloved articles of faith is a big business these days, as the trappings of religion are co-opted by savvy marketers, recycled and then commercialized -- reappearing in pop culture as hip fashion, decor and tongue-in-cheek novelties.
How else to explain the enduring popularity of "Nunzilla," a windup, plastic nun in full habit -- complete with a crucifix around her neck and a ruler in hand -- who spits sparks as she walks.
Or the Jesus Action Figure ("with posable arms and gliding action"), a mini, plastic Jesus Christ in biblically correct clothing -- and little wheels under his feet.
But wait -- Christianity isn't singled out as a target. Pop culture is nothing if not democratic. Most of the major faiths come in for their share of gentle (or not so gentle) ribbing.
For Jews with a sense of humor, there are Rabbi Punching Puppets, a Torah Personalities Set (baseball-card size) and a Kosherland Board Game.
For Buddhists, there's the Happy Squeak Monk -- a little squeaky-toy Buddhist monk, legs crossed, chatting away on a cell phone while sipping a tiny latte.
Those fond of Hinduism can buy a set of Handy Hindu Finger Puppets, in which the gods Brahma, Ganesh, Garuda and Kali are accurately portrayed in firm rubber.
Many pop-culture novelties spoof religion or religious symbols. "Nunzilla" (left) is a windup toy, walks and spits sparks. "Wash Away Your Sins" body wash (below) contains frankincense and myrrh and offers "in-the-shower cleansing power" to "liars, cheaters & wrong-doers."
Shocked? Offended? Tickled?
Reactions to these mass-marketed products vary. It depends upon whom you ask and where they're coming from.
And whether the folks who buy them have some appreciation for the deeper meaning behind these religious symbols -- or are just looking for a laugh -- isn't entirely clear.
But one thing is: This stuff is selling like, well, holy hotcakes.
Just ask Jeremy Cain, a salesperson for the past three years at Hobbs Inc., 700 Mass. The store carries Nunzilla at $5.50 apiece.
"These are top sellers," he says. "We always get requests for them, so we call customers when they get in. There's not a person who doesn't laugh when we show it to them."
‘Buddha Is My Homeboy'
It's easy to find religious kitsch, or mass-marketed products that poke fun at the symbols of faith, in Lawrence stores.
Hobbs used to sell the Jesus Action Figure, but they have sold out of the popular novelty item.
"Jesus actually glided; he has wheels," Cain says. "We can't keep those in. The Moses Action Figure had the Ten Commandments and a staff. Customers usually giggle and call their friends over to see it."
The store also sells "Wash Away Your Sins Body Wash," a $12 product made with frankincense and myrrh, that offers "in-the-shower cleansing power" "for liars, cheaters & wrong-doers."
Or you can buy a $3.50 card from the iconoclastic Mik Wright line of cards, that has a picture of Jesus at the Last Supper on the outside.
The inside of the card reads: "Excuse me ... but we asked for separate checks! I don't know about everyone else, but this will be the last supper I eat here!"
The Third Planet, 2 E. Ninth St., offers T-shirts that have a silk-screened,
smiling Buddha design, with the words, "Buddha Is My Homeboy."
"Pocket Angels" are among the mass-marketed religious novelties at Hobbs Inc., 700 Mass.
The store also sells the Jesus Action Figure. The packaging of the novelty seems respectful; it explains who the biblical Jesus is and faithfully cites 11 passages of Scripture ("I come not to judge the world but to save it" John 12:47).
There are greeting cards that depict Buddha and Hindu gods and goddesses such as Lakshmi, Devi, Sarasvati and Lord Shiva, though these don't seem intended to be humorous.
Third Planet sold out of the Handy Hindu Finger Puppets a while ago. They were so popular that some people were shoplifting them, according to manager Melissa Padgett.
The Jesus and Moses action figures have attracted a lot of attention among customers.
"They come in and they crack up. We've done really well with Jesus, but Moses only does well at Easter. I thought the Christians would be pissed off (at the products), but only a couple have," Padgett says.
Salesclerk Desiree Schumacher explains why she thinks the pop-culture religious items appeal to the store's younger customers.
"I think it has to do with our generation. We're pulling things from different cultures, we're into trying everything. We're looking for ways to express ourselves," says Schumacher, 19. ‘G Force Jesus'
Another place to buy products that riff on traditionally sacred symbols is Urban Outfitters, 1013 Mass.
The store, which caters to a youthful customer base, offers T-shirts with creative graphics and messages, such as: "Jehovah's Fitness, Running and Jumping About for God"; "Jesus Is My Homeboy"; "The Pope Is Dope"; "God Squad"; and "Everyone Loves a Catholic Girl," among others.
The T-shirts that declare "Jesus Is My Homeboy" and "Mary Is My Homegirl" have sold out. So have the red velvet coin banks in the form of Jesus or Mary, and the Jesus Action Figure.
"G Force Jesus," a rosary that's meant to be hung from a car's rearview mirror, went on sale and has been bought out. At the end of the rosary is a miniature Jesus on the cross -- but the little figure appears to be struggling to hold on against an unseen force.
You can still buy, however, a $24 "Biblical Wig" from Michele's Wig Collection. The brown-colored wig, mustache and beard is billed as one-size-fits-all, completely washable and flame retardant.
Questions about the appropriateness of such products were referred by Lawrence store employees to the company's Philadelphia headquarters.
An Urban Outfitters spokeswoman reached Wednesday said simply, "We don't comment on that kind of stuff."
How long will this trend of religious symbols being refracted through the prism of pop culture last?
"I think it's a definite cycle. The pendulum swings back and forth all the time," says Mark Swanson, owner of Hobbs Inc.
"When I was growing up in the '60s and '70s, there was a time when that was going on; that's when I first saw fuzzy Buddha (coin) banks. I think that it ebbs and flows with popularity."
The faithful can take heart. The shelf life of these products, Swanson says, isn't indefinite.
"It's been a good run. I'm not saying that Nunzilla is done -- she's
an icon. But when you start seeing it everywhere, it's done. It's over."
So how do Lawrence religious leaders feel about the mass-marketed pop-culture
products that poke fun at religion or the traditionally sacred symbols
of faith?
You won't find the Rev. Steve Kawiecki lining up to purchase Nunzilla (the walking, spark-spitting nun), the Jesus Action Figure or a T-shirt that declares "Jesus Is My Homeboy."
"It's just not my bag. I wouldn't buy them," says Kawiecki, associate pastor for youth ministries at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.
"There's certainly a place for humor and satire when talking about religion. In fact, there's a Christian satire magazine I read called The Door, and it's hilarious. But at the same time, some of these things we're talking about, like Nunzilla, I think that's more about tearing down a faith and trivializing it."
While he finds novelty products such as the "G Force Jesus" rosary disrespectful and inappropriate, the Rev. Paul Gray says religion can be leavened with laughter now and then.
"God has a sense of humor, and he's passed that onto us. If people do find themselves being offended by things like this (various pop-culture items), I think my counsel would be to really do some soul searching and try to determine what it is that offends you," he says.
"If it's literally something that is really sacrilegious and mean spirited, that's one thing, if it's just humorous, maybe you need to lighten up."

McDonald's Supersizes Hindu Endowment:
$10 Million Settlement-Includes $255,000 for Hinduism
Today International Magazine
Hindu Press International
KAUAI, HAWAII, July 4, 2005: They deceived the public about beef flavorings in their "vegetarian fries." They got caught. They were sued. They settled in court. This week the food giant McDonald's mailed a check for US$254,773.19 to Hinduism Today magazine's endowment fund (Hindu Heritage Endowment), one of a handful of elite vegetarian-friendly institutions in America chosen as recipients of the court-ordered $10 million settlement.
It was all started by a Seattle lawyer, Harish Bharti, a vegetarian Hindu who makes a habit out of identifying the ingredients in purportedly vegetarian foods. He examined McDonald's french fries. Back in 1990, news reports appeared that stated, for example, "McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King are switching to all-vegetable oil to cook their fries." The reason was to reduce the saturated fat content (bad for the heart), which, in McDonald's case, went from 42 grams to 23 grams for a two-ounce serving of fries. Prev iously, the fries were cooked with beef tallow. Our on-line dictionary appetizingly defines tallow as, "Hard fat obtained from parts of the bodies of cattle, sheep or horses, and used in foodstuffs or to make candles, leather dressing, soap and lubricants." Yum.
The problem for McDonald's was that the veggie-oil cooked fries didn't taste like their popular tallow-cooked fries, which they solved by including a beef flavoring at the time of preprocessing for distribution (not while being cooked in the restaurant). Under the US government's food guidelines, they were allowed to label this beef flavoring as "natural flavor," which it is. But because of the hype over the switch to vegetable oil for frying, vegetarians assumed--and McDonald's did not try to dissuade--that the fries were now vegetarian.
Bharti sued McDonald's in 2001, and that grew into a law suit involving a number of lawyers and organizations. Ultimately, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Muslims, vegeta rians and vegans joined the fray--the Jews because the beef flavoring was not kosher and the Muslims because it wasn't halal.
In March, 2002, the lawsuit was close to being settled. McDonald's agreed to issue a formal apology, better disclosure of ingredients, creation of an advisory board and payment of us$10,000,000 to organizations which promote vegetarianism and issues related to the fries.
The apology reads, in part, "McDonald's sincerely apologizes to Hindus, vegetarians and others for failing to provide the kind of information they needed to make informed dietary decisions at our U.S. restaurants. We acknowledge that, upon our switch to vegetable oil in the early 1990s for the purpose of reducing cholesterol, mistakes were made in communicating to the public and customers about the ingredients in our french fries and hash browns. Those mistakes included instances in which french fries and hash browns sold at U.S. restaurants were improperly ident ified as "vegetarian.'" It is part of the settlement that the full apology be printed in Veggie Life, India Tribune and Hinduism Today.
Bharti wrote at the time, "I am proud of obtaining the apology (with admission of wrongdoing), the enhanced disclosure from McDonald's and the advisory board. This means a lot to my clients and me, because this is very valuable for the consumer interest in the long run. In the last 100 years this is the first giant corporation to apologize, admit wrongdoing and also pay millions of dollars."
McDonald's is indeed giant, and serves as a kind of magnet for all criticism of big business (see http://www.mcspotlight.org). For the year 2002, McDonald's worldwide income was $15.4 billion, which yielded a net profit of $893 million. More than 30,000 local McDonald's restaurants serve 46 million customers each day in more than 100 countries.
Organizations were invited to submit specific proposals to Bharti and the othe r lawyers for a share in the settlement. The money was to go, according to McDonald's, "to Hindu, vegetarian and other groups whose charitable and educational activities are closely linked to the concerns of these consumers [having dietary restrictions]." The Hindu Heritage Endowment, founded by Hinduism Today's creator, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, was invited to submit a request. HHE proposed to put any settlement share in its Hinduism Today Distribution Fund to increase the magazine's free distribution in the US, on the basis that the magazine has consistently promoted vegetarianism among Hindus.
In May, 2003, the Illinois court where the suit was litigated, announced the 24 organizations awarded money under the settlement, one of which was the Hinduism Today endowment. The groups and the amount of settlement is:
Hindu: International/American Gita Society, $50,000; Hinduism Today Endowment, $250,000; Supporting Excellence in Education, $900,000; Council of Hindu Temples of North America $200,000; SSV Temple, $50,000; Hindu Students Council, $500,000
Muslim: Muslim Consumer Group for Food Products, $100,000; Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America, $450,000
Jewish: Jewish Community Centers Association, $200,000; Orthodox Union, $150,000; Star-K/Torah.Org, $300,000; CLAL, $50,000; The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life (Hillel), $300,000.
Sikh: Guru Harkrishan Institute of Sikh Studies, $50,000
Vegetarian: Vegetarian Resource Group, $1,400,000; ADAF Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group, $600,000; Preventive Medicine Research Institute, $550,000; North American Vegetarian Society, $1,000,000; Vegetarian Vision, Inc., $250,000; American Vegan Society, $500,000; Loma Linda University, $300,000
Academic/Other: Tufts University, $850,000; Produce for Better Health Foundation, $500,000; Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Diseas e Control and Prevention ("CDC"), $500,000.
An appeal was dismissed just last month, and the final disbursement made at the beginning of July, 2005.
So, what will Kauai's Hindu Monastery do with these funds? The monks plan to place the entire amount, just over $250,000, in the magazine's permanent endowment. None of the principle will be touched, so this will be a perpetual source for funding outright 1,000 or more subscriptions a year forever, or subsidize a larger number. In short, their supersized endowment will educate Americans, especially youth, about the merits of a veggie lifestyle, which has been a Hindu ideal for 6,000 years or more. A spokesmonk from the monastery noted they were "humbled" to be counted among some of America's most respected educational institutions.
Hindu vegetarians around the world may wish to take note of the little-publicized fact that McDonald's made no changes in their fries, which are still beef-flavoring saturated. Sure, the oil is vegetable. But make no mistake about it. There is meat in those luscious Golden Arches french fries.

History of Vegetarianism - George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
From the archives of The Vegetarian Society UK:
http://www.ivu.org/history/shaw/
The Summer of 1946 seems to have been a season of anniversaries and memorials. The Vegetarian Society itself was looking forward to its 100th anniversary and giving its members advance warnings of celebratory plans.
But the big story of the July issue of The Vegetarian Messenger was the tribute to George Bernard Shaw, celebrating his 90th birthday on the 26th of that month. He had, at that time, been a vegetarian for 66 years and was commended as one of the great thinkers and dramatists of his era. "No writer since Shakespearean times has produced such a wealth of dramatic literature, so superb in expression, so deep in thought and with such dramatic possibilities as Shaw." The writer was a staunch vegetarian, anti-vivisectionist and opponent of cruel sports.
Writings and Quotes on Vegetariansim
http://www.ivu.org/history/shaw/vegetarianism.html
On being asked why he was a vegetarian:
Oh, come! That boot is on the other leg. Why should you call me to
account for eating decently? If I battened on the scorched corpses of animals,
you might well ask me why I did that. - The Vegetarian, 15 January 1898
While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth? - unknown origin
Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends. - unknown origin
Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn! You bury it in the ground and it explodes into a giant oak! Bury a sheep and nothing happens but decay. - unknown origin
A dinner!
How horrible!
I am to be made the pretext for killing all those wretched animals
and birds, and fish! Thank you for nothing.
Now if it were to be a fast instead of a feast; say a solemn three
days' abstention from corpses in my honour, I could at least pretend to
believe that it was disinterested.
Blood sacrifices are not in my line.
- Letter 30 December 1929
THE YOUNG WOMAN: You know, to me this is a funny sort of lunch. You
begin with the dessert. We begin with the entrees. I suppose it's all right:
but I have eaten so much fruit and bread and stuff, that I don't feel I
want any meat.
THE PRIEST: We shall not offer you any. We don't eat it.
THE YOUNG WOMAN: Then how do you keep up your strength?
THE PRIEST: It keeps itself up.
- The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles, Prologue, Sc. III
"... It seems to me, looking at myself, that I am a remarkably superior person, when you compare me with other writers, journalists, and dramatists; and I am perfectly content to put this down to my abstinence from meat. That is the simple and modest ground on which we should base our non-meat diet. . . ."
I was told that my diet was so poor that I could not repair the bones that were broken and operated on. So I have just had an Xradiograph taken; and lo! perfectly mended solid bone so beautifully white that I have left instructions that, if I die, a glove stretcher is to be made of me and sent to you as a souvenir. - Letter to Mrs.Patrick Campbell
Archibald Henderson, author of a three-volume biography of Shaw, recorded an appropriate conversation with him in 1924, when Shaw was already sixty-eight; it appears in Table-Talks, a colection illustrating the outspoken and witty side of the prolific playwright:
Henderson: So be a good fellow and tell me how you succeeded in remaining
so youthful.
Shaw: I don't. I look my age; and I am my age. It is the other people
who look older than they are. What can you expect from people who eat corpses
and drink spirits?
Henderson: Our time is running short. You will have to be off to speak
on behalf of the Labor Party, or Vegetarianism, or Communism, or Fabianism,
or what not. You are such an incorrigible publicist that I have not yet
got round to literature, or to drama which is popularly supposed to be
one of your chief interests.
A poem - attributed to Shaw, but disputed by some (see notes below):
Living Graves
We are the living graves of murdered beasts,
Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.
We never pause to wonder at our feasts,
If animals, like men, can possibly have rights.
We pray on Sundays that we may have light,
To guide our footsteps on the path we tread.
We're sick of war, we do not want to fight -
The thought of it now fills our hearts with dread,
And yet - we gorge ourselves upon the dead.
Like carrion crows we live and feed on meat,
Regardless of the suffering and the pain
we cause by doing so, if thus we treat
defenceless animals for sport or gain,
how can we hope in this world to attain,
the PEACE we say we are so anxious for.
We pray for it o'er hecatombs of slain,
to God, while outraging the moral law,
thus cruelty begets its offspring - WAR.

Namaskar Mitra,
Dr Manmohan Singh praised British rule during a recent trip to U.K. Surely they did some good work in India but the damage that inflicted on the Indian economy, political scene and culture cannot be imagined. The following articles attempt to throw some light on how they ruined India.

Bullet Point Summary of key points.
· To the British
darkness and ignorance had wholly different meanings and to the majority
of them, these terms conveyed not any ignorance of arts and crafts or technology,
or aesthetics but rather the absence of the knowledge of Christianity and
its scriptural heritage.
· Peasants, artisans, those engaged in the manufacture of iron and steel, or in the various processes of its flourishing indigenous textile industry, or its surgeons and medical men, even many of its astronomers and astrologers belonged to this predominant section i.e. Sudras is unquestionable.
· Some of the important changes brought about the British were (i) revenue enhancement and centralization, (ii) attempts at breaking the sense of community (geographical, or based on occupation or kinship) amongst the people of India, (iii) reducing their consumption to the minimum through higher taxation and lowering of wage rates, and (iv) an imposition of newer concepts of property rights and laws.
· They created a system of landlordism, ryotwari and peasant indebtedness.
· Deliberate & planned lowering of the wages of Indians.
Caste
· When the
British began to conquer India, the majority of the rajas in different
parts of India had also been from amongst such castes which have been
placed in the sudra varna.
a.. Yet it can, perhaps also be argued
that the existence of caste has added to the tenacity of Indian society,
to its capacity to survive and after lying low to be able to stand
up again.
b.. The British demonized caste because it stood
in the way of their breaking Indian society, hindered the process of atomization,
and made the task of conquest and governance more difficult.
c.. Today's backward classes or Sudras cultural
and economic backwardness is post 1800 due to impact of British economic
policies.
d.. Madras Presidency 1822 survey showed sudras
and castes below formed 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the total students
in the Tamil speaking areas.
e.. Some of today's Bihar's notified tribes were
whose ancestors were warriors and gave unceasing battle to the British
till they got exhausted and succumbed to the overwhelming British power.
Besides being warriors, their main occupations are said to have been of
ironsmith (Iuhar) etc.
Agriculture
· In 1804 according
to The Edinburgh Review wages of the Indian agricultural laborer were also
much more than British counter part.
· There is a paper by Capt. Halcott on the drill plough employed in south India. He has said that he never imagined a drill plough considered as a modern European invention, at work in remote village in India
· High Yields were on account of the variety of seeds available to the Indian peasant, the sophistication and simplicity of his tools, and the extreme care and labor he expended in tending to his fields and crops.
Industry
a.. Around 1800 India had 15-20 lakh weavers with
mining being major industrial activity. Due to British policies by 1820
Indian industry was on its knees.
b.. There are accounts of the Indian process of
making steel which was called 'wootz'. The British experts who examined
samples of 'wootz' sent to them by one Dr. Helenus Scott have commented
that it is decidedly superior compared in any other steel they have seen.
· Incidentally,
modern plastic surgery in Britain is stated by its inventor to have been
derived from and developed after the observation and study of the Indian
practice from 1790 onwards.
a.. Because of the British desire to invest newly
acquired British capital, a new structure of industrialization began to
be established in various parts of India, especially round Calcutta and
Bombay, by about 1880.
b.. The larger proportion of the historical and
traditional professionals of Indian Industry however, even today, work
outside the modern industrial complex, and mostly work individually and
on their own. In the idiom of today they would form a fairly large proportion
of the 'Backward' and 'Other Backward' castes.
c.. According to current findings the India-China
region produced around 73 per cent of the industrial manufactures of the
world around 1750.
· Cloth was manufactured in practically
all the 400 districts. Many districts of south India had 10,000 to 20,000
looms in each district even around 1810. Also India had some 10,000 furnaces
for the manufacture of iron and steel. Indian steel was considered of very
high quality and in the early decades of the nineteenth century, it was
being used by the British for the making of surgical instruments.
a.. In 1763 smallpox was consciously and deliberately
introduced in North America by the British military commander to kill local
population.

THE MISSIONARY AND THE COAL MINERS
Once there was a Christian minister preaching among coal miners. The missionary began a fire and brimstone speech by telling the miners that a sinful person would have to go hell and could only be saved if he surrendered to Jesus Christ. On hearing the name of Jesus Christ, one of the miners asked, "What is his number?" Since everyone in the mining company was assigned a number, the miners could not imagine Jesus Christ being anyone other than a mine worker. The missionary tried again by describing the misery of hell. "Hell," he said, "is very dark and damp." The miners looked back at the missionary without concern. His description of hell sounded just like the mine which they already knew. Then the missionary understood that he was preaching to people with a very limited conception of reality, and so he would have to address their actual experience. "And in hell," he said, "There are no newspapers!" "Oh horrible! Very frightening!" The miners exclaimed.
MORAL: We have to preach according to kala-desha-patra; time, place and circumstance.

UNITED STATES, October 20, 2004: Are you fascinated by the many things in life that cannot be scientifically explained? Do you seem to have a "sixth sense" that sometimes allows you to know what is going to happen? Do you sometimes feel so connected to nature that everything seems to be part of one living organism? To find out how spiritual you are, click on "source" above. The short test is adapted from a personality inventory devised by Washington University psychiatrist Robert Cloninger, author of "Feeling Good: The Science of Well-Being."

In case of emergency (ICE) contact
number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of
Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon
Weston.
The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always
with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

1/2oz each, drained
200g/7oz creme fraiche (sour cream)
2–3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley,
basil, oregano or dill
freshly ground salt and black pepper

close to grated as possible but slithers

Sun-Cured Pickled Jalapeños
These pickled chiles have an East Indian flavor because of the mustard seeds and ginger. Any small green chiles can be substituted for the jalapeños. Serving Suggestions: Serve these unusual chiles on the side of the plate, or sandwiches, vege-burgers, or as a side relish for grilled or roasted veges.
Note: This recipe requires advance preparation.
Ingredients:
1 cup jalapeño chiles, stems and seeds
removed, cut in 1/4-inch strips
1 tablespoon coarse salt
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 cup oil, peanut preferred
1 teaspoon chopped fresh ginger
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
Sprinkle the chile strips with the salt; toss and let them sit for 10 minutes.
Toast the mustard and cumin seeds on a hot skillet, stirring constantly, for a couple of minutes until the seeds begin to crackle and "pop."
Heat the oil to 350 degrees F (176 C)., remove from the heat, stir in the ginger, and let it simmer for 2 minutes. Remove the ginger and discard.
Stir in the chiles, cumin seeds, lemon juice, and pack in a sterilized jar.
For 5 days, set the jar in the sun in the morning on days when it is
at least (20-23 C ) at least 70 F degrees, and bring it in at night. Shake
the jar a couple times each day.

Blackcurrant Sponge
Don't worry if you can't get hold of any blackcurrants, as this dish works well with most frozen or even canned fruit, and as it's made in the microwave oven, a really fast dessert for when you are in a hurry.

splash of milk
pinch of baking powder
2 tbsp juice from can of blackcurrants

Grease a small pudding dish and pour the sponge mix in.
Cover with cling film (food wrap) and microwave on high for four minutes.
Turn out onto a serving plate and serve with fresh cream or ice cream.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do
some pro-veg works like the following:
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.
Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops,
too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

know what got in to me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed,
"Doin' just fine!"
And the other person says:
"So what are you up to?"
What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too
bizarre so I say:
"Uhhh, I'm like you, just traveling!"
At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when
I hear another question:
"Can I come over?"
Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just
be polite and end the conversation. I tell them:
"No........I'm a little busy right now!!!"
Then I hear the person say nervously...
"Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other
stall who keeps answering all my questions.

English is a language not noted for its logic. If adults commit adultery, do infants commit infantry? If olive oil is made from olives, what do they make baby oil from? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian consume? And if pro and con are opposites, is progress the opposite of congress?
How do you get into Heaven ?
I was testing the children in my Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven.
I asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?"
"NO!" the children answered.
"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?"
Again, the answer was, "NO!"
By now I was starting to smile. Hey, this was fun!
"Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?" I asked them again.
Again, they all answered, "NO!"
I was just bursting with pride for them.
Well, I continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?"
A five-year-old boy shouted out, "YOU GOTTA BE DEAD!"...

An elderly man in upstate NY had owned a large farm house for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice: Picnic tables, horseshoe courts, a volleyball court, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond and look it
over, as he hadn't been there in a while.
He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer he saw it
was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the
women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"
The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."
Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

As a new school Principal, Mr. Mitchell was checking over his school
on the first day.
Passing the stockroom, he was startled to see the door wide open and teachers bustling in and out, carrying off books and supplies in preparation for the arrival of students the next day. The school where he had been a Principal the previous year had used a check-out system only slightly less elaborate than that at Fort Knox.
Cautiously, he asked the school's long time Custodian, "Do you think it's wise to keep the stock room unlocked and to let the teachers take things without requisitions?"
The Custodian looked at him gravely... "We trust them with the children, don't we?"

Two Jewish men, "Sid" and "Al," were sitting in a Mexican restaurant.
Sid asked Al, "Are there any people of our faith born and raised in Mexico?"
Al replied, "I don't know, let's ask our waiter."
When the waiter came by, Al asked him, "Are there any Mexican Jews?" and the waiter said, "I don't know Senor, I'll ask the cooks."
He returned from the kitchen in a few minutes and said "No sir, no Mexican Jews."
Al wasn't really satisfied with that and asked, "Are you absolutely sure?"
The waiter, realizing he was dealing with "Gringos" gave the expected answer, "I will check again, Senor!" and went back into the kitchen.
While the waiter was away, Sid said, "I find it hard to believe that there are no Jews in Mexico. Our people are scattered everywhere."
The waiter returned and said, "Senor, the head cook said there is no Mexican Jews."
"Are you certain?" Al asked once again, "I can't believe there are no Mexican Jews!"
"Senor, I ask EVERYONE," replied the exasperated waiter. "All we have is orange Jews, prune Jews, tomato Jews and grape Jews."

One early morning, a farmer was milking his cow. The farmer was just starting to get a good rhythm going when a bug flew into the barn and started circling his head. Suddenly, the bug flew into the cow's ear. The farmer didn't think much about it, until the bug squirted out into his bucket. It went in one ear and out the udder!
The ways of this material world - strange but true
If you listen closely in church next sunday and there's any children in the vicinity you may hear some five-year-olds actually saying,"deliver us some email" during the Our Father rather than "deliver us from evil."
"It's getting so bad," I commented to a friend the other day, "that pretty soon if you forget your Sunday church contribution envelope, there'll be one of those credit card slides in your pew so you can charge it."
He asked, "You mean your parish still uses envelopes? Ours uses Paypal."

The college football player knew his way around the locker room better
than he did the library,
so when my husband's co-worker saw the gridiron star roaming the stacks
looking confused, she asked how she could help.
"I have to read a play by Shakespeare," he said.
"Which one?" she asked.
He scanned the shelves and answered, "William."
We were new in town and met our daughter's teachers for the first time
at the school's open house.
The science teacher, with a twinkle in her eye, asked me, "Are you
a minister?"
"Yes," I replied. "Why do you ask?"
"It was just a feeling I had after reading one of your daughter's homework assignments," she said, handing me the corrected paper.
Next to the item "Define the Great Divide," my daughter had written, "When Moses parted the Red Sea."
In church a mother and son celebrated Communion. During the "children's sermon", the minister was talking about Communion and what it is all about.
"The Bible talks of Holy Communion being a 'joyful feast'. What does that mean? Well, 'joyful' means happy, right? And a feast is a meal. So a 'joyful feast' is a happy meal. And what are the three things we need for a happy meal?"
The son got really excited and just blurted out, "I know, a Vege burger, fries, and a regular soft drink?"

Punny Exercises:
Here is an exercise program for those of us whose wisdom exceeds our ambition. The doctor told me "Physical exercise is good for you." I know that I should do it, but my body is out of shape, so I have worked out this easy daily program I can do anywhere. If I can do it, you can do this, too.
Monday: Beat around the bush. Jump to conclusions. Climb the walls.
Wade
through paperwork.
Tuesday: Drag my heels. Push my luck. Make mountains out of molehills.
Hit the nail on the head.
Wednesday: Bend over backwards. Jump on the bandwagon. Balance the books.
Run around in circles.
Thursday: Toot my own horn. Climb the ladder of success. Pull out the
stops. Add fuel to the fire.
Friday: Open a can of worms. Put my foot in my mouth. Start the ball
rolling. Go over the edge.
...needless to say please contact your health advisor before undergoing
any of the above strenuous exercises.
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it."
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. "In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."
"So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can." "Relax; pick them up later after you've rested. Life is short. Enjoy it!
And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life: Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. Never buy a car you can't push. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have aleg to stand on. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. The second mouse gets the cheese. When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
