"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                                 TEXT 14

                         na kartrtvam na karmani
                         lokasya srjati prabhuh
                         na karma-phala-samyogam
                         svabhavas tu pravartate

   WORD FOR WORD

   na--never; kartrtvam--proprietorship; na--nor; karmani--activities;
lokasya--of the people; srjati--creates; prabhuh--the master of the
city of the body; na--nor; karma-phala--with the results of
activities; samyogam--connection; svabhavah--the modes of material
   nature; tu--but; pravartate--act.

   TRANSLATION

The embodied spirit, master of the city of his body, does not
create activities, nor does he induce people to act, nor does he
create the fruits of action. All this is enacted by the modes of
   material nature.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

The living entity, as will be explained in the Seventh Chapter, is
one of the energies or natures of the Supreme Lord but is distinct
from matter, which is another nature--called inferior--of the Lord.
Somehow the superior nature, the living entity, has been in contact
with material nature since time immemorial. The temporary body or
material dwelling place which he obtains is the cause of varieties
of activities and their resultant reactions. Living in such a
conditional atmosphere, one suffers the results of the activities
of the body by identifying himself (in ignorance) with the body. It
is ignorance acquired from time immemorial that is the cause of
bodily suffering and distress. As soon as the living entity becomes
aloof from the activities of the body, he becomes free from the
reactions as well. As long as he is in the city of body, he appears
to be the master of it, but actually he is neither its proprietor
nor controller of its actions and reactions. He is simply in the
midst of the material ocean, struggling for existence. The waves of
the ocean are tossing him, and he has no control over them. His
best solution is to get out of the water by transcendental Krsna
consciousness. That alone will save him from all turmoil.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

Talk only about Krishna

In class Prabhupada read from Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.9.46, wherein Prahlada Maharaja speaks about mauna, or the vow of silence. In India even today, people sometimes practice mauna, although generally it is not done for spiritual purposes. Neither is it strictly followed, as the practitioner often communicates with a small blackboard and chalk, or a pencil and paper.

Therefore, Prabhupada said, there is no question of not talking; one must talk. But that talk should only be about Krsna. If all we talk about is mundane activities, then we should practice mauna. But for one who is preaching Krsna consciousness, there is never enough to be said. "Srila Rupa Gosvami says that 'I have got only one tongue and two ears. So how can I enjoy or serve Hare Krsna only with one tongue and two ears? If I had millions of ears and trillions of tongues, then it would have been possible.' He is feeling like that. So he is expecting so many ears and so many tongues to chant Hare Krsna mantra."

Then he added, with perhaps a touch of irony, a comment relating to our present state of affairs. "So far we are concerned, conditioned soul, even sixteen rounds becomes very, very difficult job for us because we are practiced to talk nonsense. We cannot find out little time, say for two hours, for chanting Hare Krsna, but we can find twenty four hours for talking nonsense. Therefore one who cannot chant Hare Krsna mantra, he should stop his talking. That is called mauna. Don't talk any more. Better remain silent. This is recommendation by Prahlada Maharaja."

He concluded the class by saying that nowadays no one can follow the strict practices mentioned in the scriptures. Therefore, we should simply rely on the mercy of Lord Caitanya and chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra.

Prabhupada: ...vayasa-tirtham. And the swan is considered to be the highest of the birds. Therefore it is called paramahamsa. Example is given to the hamsa. Hamsa means swan. Supreme hamsa... French artists are famous all over the world. What is that famous artist's name?

Yogesvara: Claude Monet?

Bhagavan: Picasso.

Yogesvara: No, he's Spanish.

Devotee: Leonardo da Vinci.

Yogesvara: He's Italian.

Prabhupada: Yes. It is said that he was very poor man. So he painted in a fruitshop grapes.

Devotees: Cezanne.

Prabhupada: Ah. So the crows came to pick up the grapes, and the king was passing, he picked up, "Oh, who is that artist?" He became rich man in association. No, I have seen in that hall. So first-class picture. I have never seen such nice picture. Exactly life. [break]

Yogesvara: ...the book glorifying the Russian ideals, he is thrown out of the country.

Prabhupada: Just see. It is a country... People are not bad. I have seen. They are very nice. The government, the rascals, a few men, who are controlling the government, they are all rogues and thieves. The same thing in India. Everywhere mass population, they are innocent. These rascals made them..., misleading. In Russia I have seen. The mass people, they are very nice. Andha yathandhair upaniyamanah [SB 7.5.31]. They are innocent. In India also. The Pakistan happened due to these politicians. The Hindus, Muslims, they are innocent. They don't fight. These politicians engaged them to fight artificially for their political ambition. The wars also declared nowadays, on account of the rascal politicians. The people do not want it. [break] ...to the Indian railway strike, have you got any news?

Bhagavan: It ceased the other day.

Karandhara: They made some agreement with the union.

Prabhupada: Government made agreement.

Karandhara: Yeah, they made some compromise with the union.

Pusta-krsna: It seems that the government had arrested all of the union leaders, and this paralyzed the worker's appeal. So the workers finally agreed to go back. They put many thousands of union leaders into jail.

Prabhupada: It was right. [break]

Yogesvara: ...did in such a way that crops can be grown anywhere? Can crops be grown anywhere in the world?

Prabhupada: Yes. If it does not grow, then what is nature's arrangement?

Yogesvara: Well, for example, there are some parts in India that are too dry to cultivate the ground.

Prabhupada: Dry means there is no rain. If natures like, there can be profuse rain. That is nature's arrangement. That is stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Parjanyad anna-sambhavah. Parjanyat. You must have sufficient rain. And for having sufficient rain, you must execute yajna. Yajnad bhavati parjanyah [Bg. 3.14]. So these people are now becoming rascals. They are not performing yajnas. They are opening slaughterhouse. How there will be rain? Instead of performing yajnas, they are opening big, big slaughterhouse.

Bhagavan: I think now in many parts of the world the desert is increasing.

Prabhupada: Yes, desert will increase.

Bhagavad Gita 2:16

näsato vidyate bhävo
näbhävo vidyate sataù
ubhayor api dåñöo 'ntas
tv anayos tattva-darçibhiù

TRANSLATION
Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both.

PURPORT
There is no endurance of the changing body. That the body is changing every moment by the actions and reactions of the different cells is admitted by modern medical science; and thus growth and old age are taking place in the body. But the spirit soul exists permanently, remaining the same despite all changes of the body and the mind. That is the difference between matter and spirit. By nature, the body is ever changing, and the soul is eternal. This conclusion is established by all classes of seers of the truth, both impersonalist and personalist. In the Viñëu Puräëa (2.12.38) it is stated that Viñëu and His abodes all have self-illuminated spiritual existence (jyotéàñi viñëur bhuvanäni viñëuù). The words existent and nonexistent refer only to spirit and matter. That is the version of all seers of truth.
This is the beginning of the instruction by the Lord to the living entities who are bewildered by the influence of ignorance. Removal of ignorance involves the reestablishment of the eternal relationship between the worshiper and the worshipable and the consequent understanding of the difference between the part-and-parcel living entities and the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One can understand the nature of the Supreme by thorough study of oneself, the difference between oneself and the Supreme being understood as the relationship between the part and the whole. In the Vedänta-sütras, as well as in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam, the Supreme has been accepted as the origin of all emanations. Such emanations are experienced by superior and inferior natural sequences. The living entities belong to the superior nature, as it will be revealed in the Seventh Chapter. Although there is no difference between the energy and the energetic, the energetic is accepted as the Supreme, and energy or nature is accepted as the subordinate. The living entities, therefore, are always subordinate to the Supreme Lord, as in the case of the master and the servant, or the teacher and the taught. Such clear knowledge is impossible to understand under the spell of ignorance, and to drive away such ignorance the Lord teaches the Bhagavad-gétä for the enlightenment of all living entities for all time.

Bhagavad Gita 2:17

avinäçi tu tad viddhi
yena sarvam idaà tatam
vinäçam avyayasyäsya
na kaçcit kartum arhati

TRANSLATION
That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.

PURPORT
This verse more clearly explains the real nature of the soul, which is spread all over the body. Anyone can understand what is spread all over the body: it is consciousness. Everyone is conscious of the pains and pleasures of the body in part or as a whole. This spreading of consciousness is limited within one's own body. The pains and pleasures of one body are unknown to another. Therefore, each and every body is the embodiment of an individual soul, and the symptom of the soul's presence is perceived as individual consciousness. This soul is described as one ten-thousandth part of the upper portion of the hair point in size. The Çvetäçvatara Upaniñad (5.9) confirms this:

bälägra-çata-bhägasya
çatadhä kalpitasya ca
bhägo jévaù sa vijïeyaù
sa cänantyäya kalpate

"When the upper point of a hair is divided into one hundred parts and again each of such parts is further divided into one hundred parts, each such part is the measurement of the dimension of the spirit soul." Similarly the same version is stated:

keçägra-çata-bhägasya
çatäàçaù sädåçätmakaù
jévaù sükñma-svarüpo 'yaà
saìkhyätéto hi cit-kaëaù
 [Cc. Madhya 19.140]

"There are innumerable particles of spiritual atoms, which are measured as one ten-thousandth of the upper portion of the hair."
Therefore, the individual particle of spirit soul is a spiritual atom smaller than the material atoms, and such atoms are innumerable. This very small spiritual spark is the basic principle of the material body, and the influence of such a spiritual spark is spread all over the body as the influence of the active principle of some medicine spreads throughout the body. This current of the spirit soul is felt all over the body as consciousness, and that is the proof of the presence of the soul. Any layman can understand that the material body minus consciousness is a dead body, and this consciousness cannot be revived in the body by any means of material administration. Therefore, consciousness is not due to any amount of material combination, but to the spirit soul. In the Muëòaka Upaniñad (3.1.9) the measurement of the atomic spirit soul is further explained:

eño 'ëur ätmä cetasä veditavyo
yasmin präëaù païcadhä saàviveça
präëaiç cittaà sarvam otaà prajänäà
yasmin viçuddhe vibhavaty eña ätmä

"The soul is atomic in size and can be perceived by perfect intelligence. This atomic soul is floating in the five kinds of air (präëa, apäna, vyäna, samäna and udäna), is situated within the heart, and spreads its influence all over the body of the embodied living entities. When the soul is purified from the contamination of the five kinds of material air, its spiritual influence is exhibited."
The haöha-yoga system is meant for controlling the five kinds of air encircling the pure soul by different kinds of sitting postures—not for any material profit, but for liberation of the minute soul from the entanglement of the material atmosphere.
So the constitution of the atomic soul is admitted in all Vedic literatures, and it is also actually felt in the practical experience of any sane man. Only the insane man can think of this atomic soul as all-pervading viñëu-tattva.
The influence of the atomic soul can be spread all over a particular body. According to the Muëòaka Upaniñad, this atomic soul is situated in the heart of every living entity, and because the measurement of the atomic soul is beyond the power of appreciation of the material scientists, some of them assert foolishly that there is no soul. The individual atomic soul is definitely there in the heart along with the Supersoul, and thus all the energies of bodily movement are emanating from this part of the body. The corpuscles which carry the oxygen from the lungs gather energy from the soul. When the soul passes away from this position, the activity of the blood, generating fusion, ceases. Medical science accepts the importance of the red corpuscles, but it cannot ascertain that the source of the energy is the soul. Medical science, however, does admit that the heart is the seat of all energies of the body.
Such atomic particles of the spirit whole are compared to the sunshine molecules. In the sunshine there are innumerable radiant molecules. Similarly, the fragmental parts of the Supreme Lord are atomic sparks of the rays of the Supreme Lord, called by the name prabhä, or superior energy. So whether one follows Vedic knowledge or modern science, one cannot deny the existence of the spirit soul in the body, and the science of the soul is explicitly described in the Bhagavad-gétä by the Personality of Godhead Himself.

Bhagavad Gita 2.18

antavanta ime dehä
nityasyoktäù çarériëaù
anäçino 'prameyasya
tasmäd yudhyasva bhärata

TRANSLATION
The material body of the indestructible, immeasurable and eternal living entity is sure to come to an end; therefore, fight, O descendant of Bharata.

PURPORT
The material body is perishable by nature. It may perish immediately, or it may do so after a hundred years. It is a question of time only. There is no chance of maintaining it indefinitely. But the spirit soul is so minute that it cannot even be seen by an enemy, to say nothing of being killed. As mentioned in the previous verse, it is so small that no one can have any idea how to measure its dimension. So from both viewpoints there is no cause of lamentation, because the living entity as he is cannot be killed nor can the material body be saved for any length of time or permanently protected. The minute particle of the whole spirit acquires this material body according to his work, and therefore observance of religious principles should be utilized. In the Vedänta-sütras the living entity is qualified as light because he is part and parcel of the supreme light. As sunlight maintains the entire universe, so the light of the soul maintains this material body. As soon as the spirit soul is out of this material body, the body begins to decompose; therefore it is the spirit soul which maintains this body. The body itself is unimportant. Arjuna was advised to fight and not sacrifice the cause of religion for material, bodily considerations.

Bhagavad Gita 2:19

ubhau tau na vijänéto
näyaà hanti na hanyate

TRANSLATION
Neither he who thinks the living entity the slayer nor he who thinks it slain is in knowledge, for the self slays not nor is slain.

PURPORT
When an embodied living entity is hurt by fatal weapons, it is to be known that the living entity within the body is not killed. The spirit soul is so small that it is impossible to kill him by any material weapon, as will be evident from subsequent verses. Nor is the living entity killable, because of his spiritual constitution. What is killed, or is supposed to be killed, is the body only. This, however, does not at all encourage killing of the body. The Vedic injunction is mä hiàsyät sarvä bhütäni: [Bg. 9.4] never commit violence to anyone. Nor does understanding that the living entity is not killed encourage animal slaughter. Killing the body of anyone without authority is abominable and is punishable by the law of the state as well as by the law of the Lord. Arjuna, however, is being engaged in killing for the principle of religion, and not whimsically.

Bhagavad Gita 2:20

na jäyate mriyate vä kadäcin

TRANSLATION
For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.

PURPORT
Qualitatively, the small atomic fragmental part of the Supreme Spirit is one with the Supreme. He undergoes no changes like the body. Sometimes the soul is called the steady, or küöa-stha. The body is subject to six kinds of transformations. It takes its birth from the womb of the mother's body, remains for some time, grows, produces some effects, gradually dwindles, and at last vanishes into oblivion. The soul, however, does not go through such changes. The soul is not born, but, because he takes on a material body, the body takes its birth. The soul does not take birth there, and the soul does not die. Anything which has birth also has death. And because the soul has no birth, he therefore has no past, present or future. He is eternal, ever-existing, and primeval—that is, there is no trace in history of his coming into being. Under the impression of the body, we seek the history of birth, etc., of the soul. The soul does not at any time become old, as the body does. The so-called old man, therefore, feels himself to be in the same spirit as in his childhood or youth. The changes of the body do not affect the soul. The soul does not deteriorate like a tree, nor anything material. The soul has no by-product either. The by-products of the body, namely children, are also different individual souls; and, owing to the body, they appear as children of a particular man. The body develops because of the soul's presence, but the soul has neither offshoots nor change. Therefore, the soul is free from the six changes of the body.

In the Kaöha Upaniñad (1.2.18) we also find a similar passage, which reads:

na jäyate mriyate vä vipaçcin
näyaà kutaçcin na babhüva kaçcit
ajo nityaù çäçvato 'yaà puräëo
na hanyate hanyamäne çarére

The meaning and purport of this verse is the same as in the Bhagavad-gétä, but here in this verse there is one special word, vipaçcit, which means learned or with knowledge.
The soul is full of knowledge, or full always with consciousness. Therefore, consciousness is the symptom of the soul. Even if one does not find the soul within the heart, where he is situated, one can still understand the presence of the soul simply by the presence of consciousness. Sometimes we do not find the sun in the sky owing to clouds, or for some other reason, but the light of the sun is always there, and we are convinced that it is therefore daytime. As soon as there is a little light in the sky early in the morning, we can understand that the sun is in the sky. Similarly, since there is some consciousness in all bodies—whether man or animal—we can understand the presence of the soul. This consciousness of the soul is, however, different from the consciousness of the Supreme because the supreme consciousness is all-knowledge—past, present and future. The consciousness of the individual soul is prone to be forgetful. When he is forgetful of his real nature, he obtains education and enlightenment from the superior lessons of Kåñëa. But Kåñëa is not like the forgetful soul. If so, Kåñëa's teachings of Bhagavad-gétä would be useless.
There are two kinds of souls—namely the minute particle soul (aëu-ätmä) and the Supersoul (vibhu-ätmä). This is also confirmed in the Kaöha Upaniñad (1.2.20) in this way:

aëor aëéyän mahato mahéyän
ätmäsya jantor nihito guhäyäm
tam akratuù paçyati véta-çoko
dhätuù prasädän mahimänam ätmanaù

"Both the Supersoul [Paramätmä] and the atomic soul [jévätmä] are situated on the same tree of the body within the same heart of the living being, and only one who has become free from all material desires as well as lamentations can, by the grace of the Supreme, understand the glories of the soul." Kåñëa is the fountainhead of the Supersoul also, as it will be disclosed in the following chapters, and Arjuna is the atomic soul, forgetful of his real nature; therefore he requires to be enlightened by Kåñëa, or by His bona fide representative (the spiritual master).

Bhagavad Gita 2:21

vedävinäçinaà nityaà
ya enam ajam avyayam
kathaà sa puruñaù pärtha
kaà ghätayati hanti kam

TRANSLATION
O Pärtha, how can a person who knows that the soul is indestructible, eternal, unborn and immutable kill anyone or cause anyone to kill?

PURPORT
Everything has its proper utility, and a man who is situated in complete knowledge knows how and where to apply a thing for its proper utility. Similarly, violence also has its utility, and how to apply violence rests with the person in knowledge. Although the justice of the peace awards capital punishment to a person condemned for murder, the justice of the peace cannot be blamed, because he orders violence to another person according to the codes of justice. In Manu-saàhitä, the lawbook for mankind, it is supported that a murderer should be condemned to death so that in his next life he will not have to suffer for the great sin he has committed. Therefore, the king's punishment of hanging a murderer is actually beneficial. Similarly, when Kåñëa orders fighting, it must be concluded that violence is for supreme justice, and thus Arjuna should follow the instruction, knowing well that such violence, committed in the act of fighting for Kåñëa, is not violence at all because, at any rate, the man, or rather the soul, cannot be killed; so for the administration of justice, so-called violence is permitted. A surgical operation is not meant to kill the patient, but to cure him. Therefore the fighting to be executed by Arjuna at the instruction of Kåñëa is with full knowledge, so there is no possibility of sinful reaction.

Bhagavad Gita 2:22

väsäàsi jérëäni yathä vihäya
naväni gåhëäti naro 'paräëi
tathä çaréräëi vihäya jérëäny
anyäni saàyäti naväni dehé

TRANSLATION
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

PURPORT
Change of body by the atomic individual soul is an accepted fact. Even the modern scientists who do not believe in the existence of the soul, but at the same time cannot explain the source of energy from the heart, have to accept continuous changes of body which appear from childhood to boyhood and from boyhood to youth and again from youth to old age. From old age, the change is transferred to another body. This has already been explained in a previous verse (2.13).
Transference of the atomic individual soul to another body is made possible by the grace of the Supersoul. The Supersoul fulfills the desire of the atomic soul as one friend fulfills the desire of another. The Vedas, like the Muëòaka Upaniñad, as well as the Çvetäçvatara Upaniñad, compare the soul and the Supersoul to two friendly birds sitting on the same tree. One of the birds (the individual atomic soul) is eating the fruit of the tree, and the other bird (Kåñëa) is simply watching His friend. Of these two birds—although they are the same in quality—one is captivated by the fruits of the material tree, while the other is simply witnessing the activities of His friend. Kåñëa is the witnessing bird, and Arjuna is the eating bird. Although they are friends, one is still the master and the other is the servant. Forgetfulness of this relationship by the atomic soul is the cause of one's changing his position from one tree to another, or from one body to another. The jéva soul is struggling very hard on the tree of the material body, but as soon as he agrees to accept the other bird as the supreme spiritual master—as Arjuna agreed to do by voluntary surrender unto Kåñëa for instruction—the subordinate bird immediately becomes free from all lamentations. Both the Muëòaka Upaniñad (3.1.2) and Çvetäçvatara Upaniñad (4.7) confirm this:

samäne våkñe puruño nimagno
'néçayä çocati muhyamänaù
juñöaà yadä paçyaty anyam éçam
asya mahimänam iti véta-çokaù

"Although the two birds are in the same tree, the eating bird is fully engrossed with anxiety and moroseness as the enjoyer of the fruits of the tree. But if in some way or other he turns his face to his friend who is the Lord and knows His glories—at once the suffering bird becomes free from all anxieties." Arjuna has now turned his face towards his eternal friend, Kåñëa, and is understanding the Bhagavad-gétä from Him. And thus, hearing from Kåñëa, he can understand the supreme glories of the Lord and be free from lamentation.
Arjuna is advised herewith by the Lord not to lament for the bodily change of his old grandfather and his teacher. He should rather be happy to kill their bodies in the righteous fight so that they may be cleansed at once of all reactions from various bodily activities. One who lays down his life on the sacrificial altar, or in the proper battlefield, is at once cleansed of bodily reactions and promoted to a higher status of life. So there was no cause for Arjuna's lamentation.

Bhagavad Gita 2:23

nainaà chindanti çasträëi
nainaà dahati pävakaù
na cainaà kledayanty äpo
na çoñayati märutaù

TRANSLATION
The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.

PURPORT
All kinds of weapons—swords, flame weapons, rain weapons, tornado weapons, etc.—are unable to kill the spirit soul. It appears that there were many kinds of weapons made of earth, water, air, ether, etc., in addition to the modern weapons of fire. Even the nuclear weapons of the modern age are classified as fire weapons, but formerly there were other weapons made of all different types of material elements. Firearms were counteracted by water weapons, which are now unknown to modern science. Nor do modern scientists have knowledge of tornado weapons. Nonetheless, the soul can never be cut into pieces, nor annihilated by any number of weapons, regardless of scientific devices.
The Mäyävädé cannot explain how the individual soul came into existence simply by ignorance and consequently became covered by the illusory energy. Nor was it ever possible to cut the individual souls from the original Supreme Soul; rather, the individual souls are eternally separated parts of the Supreme Soul. Because they are atomic individual souls eternally (sanätana), they are prone to be covered by the illusory energy, and thus they become separated from the association of the Supreme Lord, just as the sparks of a fire, although one in quality with the fire, are prone to be extinguished when out of the fire. In the Varäha Puräëa, the living entities are described as separated parts and parcels of the Supreme. They are eternally so, according to the Bhagavad-gétä also. So, even after being liberated from illusion, the living entity remains a separate identity, as is evident from the teachings of the Lord to Arjuna. Arjuna became liberated by the knowledge received from Kåñëa, but he never became one with Kåñëa.

Bhagavad Gita 2:24

acchedyo 'yam adähyo 'yam
akledyo 'çoñya eva ca
nityaù sarva-gataù sthäëur
acalo 'yaà sanätanaù

TRANSLATION
This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.

PURPORT
All these qualifications of the atomic soul definitely prove that the individual soul is eternally the atomic particle of the spirit whole, and he remains the same atom eternally, without change. The theory of monism is very difficult to apply in this case, because the individual soul is never expected to become one homogeneously. After liberation from material contamination, the atomic soul may prefer to remain as a spiritual spark in the effulgent rays of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but the intelligent souls enter into the spiritual planets to associate with the Personality of Godhead.
The word sarva-gata ("all-pervading") is significant because there is no doubt that living entities are all over God's creation. They live on the land, in the water, in the air, within the earth and even within fire. The belief that they are sterilized in fire is not acceptable, because it is clearly stated here that the soul cannot be burned by fire. Therefore, there is no doubt that there are living entities also in the sun planet with suitable bodies to live there. If the sun globe is uninhabited, then the word sarva-gata—"living everywhere"—becomes meaningless.

Bhagavad Gita 2:25

TRANSLATION
It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

PURPORT
As described previously, the magnitude of the soul is so small for our material calculation that he cannot be seen even by the most powerful microscope; therefore, he is invisible. As far as the soul's existence is concerned, no one can establish his existence experimentally beyond the proof of çruti, or Vedic wisdom. We have to accept this truth, because there is no other source of understanding the existence of the soul, although it is a fact by perception. There are many things we have to accept solely on grounds of superior authority. No one can deny the existence of his father, based upon the authority of his mother. There is no source of understanding the identity of the father except by the authority of the mother. Similarly, there is no source of understanding the soul except by studying the Vedas. In other words, the soul is inconceivable by human experimental knowledge. The soul is consciousness and conscious—that also is the statement of the Vedas, and we have to accept that. Unlike the bodily changes, there is no change in the soul. As eternally unchangeable, the soul remains atomic in comparison to the infinite Supreme Soul. The Supreme Soul is infinite, and the atomic soul is infinitesimal. Therefore, the infinitesimal soul, being unchangeable, can never become equal to the infinite soul, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This concept is repeated in the Vedas in different ways just to confirm the stability of the conception of the soul. Repetition of something is necessary in order that we understand the matter thoroughly, without error.

TRANSLATION
If, however, you think that the soul [or the symptoms of life] is always born and dies forever, you still have no reason to lament, O mighty-armed.

PURPORT
There is always a class of philosophers, almost akin to the Buddhists, who do not believe in the separate existence of the soul beyond the body. When Lord Kåñëa spoke the Bhagavad-gétä, it appears that such philosophers existed, and they were known as the lokäyatikas and vaibhäñikas. Such philosophers maintain that life symptoms take place at a certain mature condition of material combination. The modern material scientist and materialist philosophers also think similarly. According to them, the body is a combination of physical elements, and at a certain stage the life symptoms develop by interaction of the physical and chemical elements. The science of anthropology is based on this philosophy. Currently, many pseudo religions—now becoming fashionable in America—are also adhering to this philosophy, as are the nihilistic nondevotional Buddhist sects.
Even if Arjuna did not believe in the existence of the soul—as in the vaibhäñika philosophy—there would still have been no cause for lamentation. No one laments the loss of a certain bulk of chemicals and stops discharging his prescribed duty. On the other hand, in modern science and scientific warfare, so many tons of chemicals are wasted for achieving victory over the enemy. According to the vaibhäñika philosophy, the so-called soul or ätmä vanishes along with the deterioration of the body. So, in any case, whether Arjuna accepted the Vedic conclusion that there is an atomic soul or he did not believe in the existence of the soul, he had no reason to lament. According to this theory, since there are so many living entities generating out of matter every moment, and so many of them are being vanquished every moment, there is no need to grieve for such incidents. If there were no rebirth for the soul, Arjuna had no reason to be afraid of being affected by sinful reactions due to his killing his grandfather and teacher. But at the same time, Kåñëa sarcastically addressed Arjuna as mahä-bähu, mighty-armed, because He, at least, did not accept the theory of the vaibhäñikas, which leaves aside the Vedic wisdom. As a kñatriya, Arjuna belonged to the Vedic culture, and it behooved him to continue to follow its principles.

Bhagavad Gita 2:27

jätasya hi dhruvo måtyur
dhruvaà janma måtasya ca
tasmäd aparihärye 'rthe
na tvaà çocitum arhasi

TRANSLATION
One who has taken his birth is sure to die, and after death one is sure to take birth again. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty, you should not lament.

PURPORT
One has to take birth according to one's activities of life. And after finishing one term of activities, one has to die to take birth for the next. In this way one is going through one cycle of birth and death after another without liberation. This cycle of birth and death does not, however, support unnecessary murder, slaughter and war. But at the same time, violence and war are inevitable factors in human society for keeping law and order.
The Battle of Kurukñetra, being the will of the Supreme, was an inevitable event, and to fight for the right cause is the duty of a kñatriya. Why should Arjuna be afraid of or aggrieved at the death of his relatives since he was discharging his proper duty? He did not deserve to break the law, thereby becoming subjected to the reactions of sinful acts, of which he was so afraid. By avoiding the discharge of his proper duty, he would not be able to stop the death of his relatives, and he would be degraded due to his selection of the wrong path of action.

Bhagavad Gita 2:28

avyaktädéni bhütäni
vyakta-madhyäni bhärata
avyakta-nidhanäny eva
tatra kä paridevanä

TRANSLATION
All created beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their interim state, and unmanifest again when annihilated. So what need is there for lamentation?

PURPORT
Accepting that there are two classes of philosophers, one believing in the existence of the soul and the other not believing in the existence of the soul, there is no cause for lamentation in either case. Nonbelievers in the existence of the soul are called atheists by followers of Vedic wisdom. Yet even if, for argument's sake, we accept this atheistic theory, there is still no cause for lamentation. Apart from the separate existence of the soul, the material elements remain unmanifested before creation. From this subtle state of nonmanifestation comes manifestation, just as from ether, air is generated; from air, fire is generated; from fire, water is generated; and from water, earth becomes manifested. From the earth, many varieties of manifestations take place. Take, for example, a big skyscraper manifested from the earth. When it is dismantled, the manifestation becomes again unmanifested and remains as atoms in the ultimate stage. The law of conservation of energy remains, but in course of time things are manifested and unmanifested—that is the difference. Then what cause is there for lamentation either in the stage of manifestation or in unmanifestation? Somehow or other, even in the unmanifested stage, things are not lost. Both at the beginning and at the end, all elements remain unmanifested, and only in the middle are they manifested, and this does not make any real material difference.

And if we accept the Vedic conclusion as stated in the Bhagavad-gétä that these material bodies are perishable in due course of time (antavanta ime dehäù) but that the soul is eternal (nityasyoktäù çarériëaù), then we must remember always that the body is like a dress; therefore why lament the changing of a dress? The material body has no factual existence in relation to the eternal soul. It is something like a dream. In a dream we may think of flying in the sky, or sitting on a chariot as a king, but when we wake up we can see that we are neither in the sky nor seated on the chariot. The Vedic wisdom encourages self-realization on the basis of the nonexistence of the material body. Therefore, in either case, whether one believes in the existence of the soul or one does not believe in the existence of the soul, there is no cause for lamentation for loss of the body.

Bhagavad Gita 2:29

äçcarya-vat paçyati kaçcid enam
äçcarya-vad vadati tathaiva cänyaù
äçcarya-vac cainam anyaù çåëoti
çrutväpy enaà veda na caiva kaçcit

TRANSLATION
Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing, and some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, cannot understand him at all.

PURPORT
Since Gétopaniñad is largely based on the principles of the Upaniñads, it is not surprising to also find this passage in the Kaöha Upaniñad (1.2.7):

çravaëayäpi bahubhir yo na labhyaù
çåëvanto 'pi bahavo yaà na vidyuù
äçcaryo vaktä kuçalo 'sya labdhä
äçcaryo 'sya jïätä kuçalänuçiñöaù

The fact that the atomic soul is within the body of a gigantic animal, in the body of a gigantic banyan tree, and also in the microbic germs, millions and billions of which occupy only an inch of space, is certainly very amazing. Men with a poor fund of knowledge and men who are not austere cannot understand the wonders of the individual atomic spark of spirit, even though it is explained by the greatest authority of knowledge, who imparted lessons even to Brahmä, the first living being in the universe. Owing to a gross material conception of things, most men in this age cannot imagine how such a small particle can become both so great and so small. So men look at the soul proper as wonderful either by constitution or by description. Illusioned by the material energy, people are so engrossed in subject matters for sense gratification that they have very little time to understand the question of self-understanding, even though it is a fact that without this self-understanding all activities result in ultimate defeat in the struggle for existence. Perhaps they have no idea that one must think of the soul, and thus make a solution to the material miseries.
Some people who are inclined to hear about the soul may be attending lectures, in good association, but sometimes, owing to ignorance, they are misguided by acceptance of the Supersoul and the atomic soul as one without distinction of magnitude. It is very difficult to find a man who perfectly understands the position of the Supersoul, the atomic soul, their respective functions and relationships and all other major and minor details. And it is still more difficult to find a man who has actually derived full benefit from knowledge of the soul, and who is able to describe the position of the soul in different aspects. But if, somehow or other, one is able to understand the subject matter of the soul, then one's life is successful.
The easiest process for understanding the subject matter of self, however, is to accept the statements of the Bhagavad-gétä spoken by the greatest authority, Lord Kåñëa, without being deviated by other theories. But it also requires a great deal of penance and sacrifice, either in this life or in the previous ones, before one is able to accept Kåñëa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Kåñëa can, however, be known as such by the causeless mercy of the pure devotee and by no other way.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." thanx again Shyam'

Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Size 14 MB

Yours faithfully,

God and Spirituality Dominate Search Engine Queries

Nov 28, USA (PRWEB) — "At the present time the word GOD costs an advertiser roughly $25 per click for top placement on the Yahoo Search Engine Network" said Harald Anderson, Search Engine Optimization Renegade Consultant from Clearwater, Florida. "Who would pay this much for a click? Anyone who has a spiritually related website and wanted top placement for this keyword in the search engines" said Anderson. Why do advertisers bid this much for spiritually related terms? In a nutshell, God and Spirituality are a very competitive niche.

In the online world, advertisers pay search engine merchants like Google and Yahoo on a per click basis to drive a visitor to their websites. This is referred to online as pay per click advertising. The two biggest search engines Google and Yahoo act as online advertising agencies that sell pay per click traffic to the highest bidders.

The price of each click is determined by supply and demand of the topic. This is referred to as a sponsored listing and is the mechanism that Google has used to make over $7 billion in profits with their Adwords Sponsored Listings Program.

Adwords Sponsored Listings are online advertising. "At the present time the word GOD costs an advertiser roughly $25 per click for top placement on the Yahoo Network" said Harald Anderson, Search Engine Optimization Renegade Consultant from Clearwater, Florida.

"Who would pay this much for a click? Anyone who has a spiritually related website and wanted top placement for this keyword in the search engines" said Anderson.

Why do advertisers bid this much for spiritually related terms? In a nutshell, God and Spirituality is a very competitive niche.

"Last month searches for spiritually related keywords and topics soared to record highs as surfers online seek answers to age old questions," said Anderson

"Hindu Gods, Christianity, Islam, New Age. Although these terms have contrasting definitions, people are searching for answers" say Anderson. With the holidays approaching this trend is sure to intensify.

Anderson offers insights on the following spiritually related topics that are of interest to the changing demographics of online marketing with the holidays approaching:

1) The term GOD is currently bid at around $25 per click on the Yahoo network and was searched 123,661 times last month.

2) The word Jesus was searched 152,617 times last month and costs advertisers about 32 cents a click for top ranking.

3) The word Christianity was searched 111,863 times and costs advertisers $1.00 per click.

4) The keyword Islam was searched 141,419 times and costs advertisers only eleven cents a click.

"The thing that most people don't realize," Anderson says, "is that spiritual organizations like churches and goodwill organizations have huge expenses that they need to cover to be able to survive. Competing in the online world, for your traffic requires top notch business marketing skills."

"The demand for religious and spiritually related topics clearly demonstrates that regardless how technology changes that people are still seeking answers to personal and spiritual questions." says Anderson. "Church attendance might be down at most congregations, but online God is definitely of interest. Online advertisers are bidding big money for spiritual terms.

Advertisers like churches and religious organizations are competing for online traffic just like everyone else in today's marketplace.

Why the huge discrepancies in pricing?

Supply and demand. Some topics have huge demand and other areas do not. God is a popular topic.

One website that has positioned themselves to satisfy this spiritual hunger online is www.webuybibles.com created by web designer Daryl Jones.

Jones built www.webuybibles.com as a resource for people of all faiths throughout the United States to be able to locate Bible Study Groups in their immediate vicinity.

The website consists of over 50,000 pages organized by city and state of local religious resources and information for individuals seeking to study God's word. Bible study offers people who are hungry for spiritual answers the opportunity to meet with other like minded people and find answers related to life as found in the Holy Bible. "www.webuybibles.com was established online to assist in that regard, said Jones, a prolific web designer.

"I hope that people can use this resource to find others who are seeking answers to life's questions", said Jones.

Harald Anderson is a Search Engine Optimization Renegade who monitors online trends for his customers. He is well known in the Search Engine Optimization Underground for teaching his power packed tactics and humorous insights to elite audiences around the world.

Jagannath Temple in Puri Ponders Entrance Policy
http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IEQ20051125024551&Page=Q&Title=ORISSA&Topic=0

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA, November 25, 2005: Will January 2006 bring cheer to the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains of foreign origin by opening the doors of Shri Jagannath Temple along with several other Hindu places of worship, which have so far been out of bounds for them? Well, it just might. For, all those who have a say in the matter are set to assemble at Muktimandap of Shri Jagannath Temple and take a decision on the centuries-old tradition. As a heated debate rages whether to or not to allow Hindus, Buddhists and Jains of foreign origin into the Hindu temples, most particularly the 12th Century Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati is expected to convene a meeting with the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, Sevayats (servitors), temple administration and the Government representatives to discuss the issue by December-end. Sources close to Shankaracharya, who is on a religious trip outside the State, said, he is aware of the development and is keen to sort it out in consultation with the stake-holders.

"He will return to Puri by the last week of December and would initiate the discussions immediately,'' sources said emphatically. The move of the Shankaracharya assumes significance as he heads Muktimandap, which is the apex decision-making body of the temple and whose verdict is also accepted by other Hindu temples and places of worship. Even Hindu organizations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad have called for relaxation of the tradition and allowing Hindus, Buddhists and Jains of non-Indian origin to enter the Jagannath Temple.

Thai Princess Denied Entry to Puri Temple

Times of India

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA, November 22, 2005: Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, on her maiden trip to Orissa, was denied permission to enter the world famous Jagannath Temple as foreigners are not allowed inside temples in Orissa. Arrangements were made for the princess to view the temple from outside. This, incidentally, came quick on the heels of US-born Pamela K Fleig, who married an Indian and embraced Hinduism, being denied entry into the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar recently, sparking off a row. ''This has been a practice for centuries,'' a senior temple official said. He added that the Centre had earlier sought a clarification from the state government on whether it would be possible to allow the Thai Princess into the temple. "We immediately consulted the temple's body of priests and pundits, who did not agree,'' the official disclosed. Consequently, an arrangement was made atop the nearby Emara Mutt building for the princess to have a glimpse of the gigantic 12th century temple. "It is a sensitive issue. We didn't want to risk ignoring views of priests and pundits on the matter. They are okay with people from undivided India but not beyond that,'' the official told TOI. Indian Buddhists and Jains, besides Buddhists, Jains and Hindus from neighboring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan are allowed in the Jagannath Temple. But converted Hindus, Buddhists and Jains from other countries are not allowed. Even the late PM Indira Gandhi was denied entry into the temple as she was married to a Parsi.

Why bhakti is on top of the paths byShyamananda Dasa
 http://dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=11908&CatID=19

REFLEXIONS

The process of uniting oneself with the Supreme is called yoga. Yoga actually means bhakti yoga; all other yogas lead to it, the final destination. From the journey's start in karma yoga, to its end, it is a long way to self-realisation.

When karma yoga grows in knowledge and renunciation, that stage is called jnana yoga. When jnana yoga grows in meditation to the Supersoul, and the mind is on Him, it is called ashtanga yoga. And when one comes to the point of the Supreme Person of Godhead Krishna, it is called bhakti yoga, the culmination.

This is confirmed by Krishna Himself in the Bhagavad Gita, "And of all yogis, the one with great faith who always abides in Me, thinks of Me within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Me, he is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all."

Bhakti yoga is the last link in the yogic chain, the link that binds us to Lord Krishna. Without this final link, the chain is practically useless.

Those who are not unalloyed devotees but follow paths of spiritual realisation such as karma yoga, jnana yoga and hatha yoga must leave the body some time and return to this world of birth and death. In Srimad Bhagvatam, Narada Muni explains that Vedic literature is so vast, and there are so many forms of religion, but if they don't teach what true bhakti or devotion and sacrifice to Lord Krishna is, then they cannot really bring a person to the real natural happiness and joy that everyone is seeking.

Pure devotional service or bhakti is the beginning of all auspiciousness. It brings immediate relief from all kinds of material distress. It is clearly declared by the Supreme Lord that in devotional service there is no distinction between the lower and higher classes of people. In fact, devotion makes everyone eligible for the Supreme destination.

Hindus want to 'reclaim' swastika
 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4188141.stm

Hindus in the UK are starting a campaign to reclaim the swastika from its Nazi associations.

German MEPs called for a Europe-wide ban of the symbol after Prince Harry wore it on a fancy dress costume.

But Hindu Forum spokesman Ramesh Kallidai said the swastika had been a Hindu good luck charm for centuries.

Buddhists also view the swastika as a good luck charm

The group will stage public awareness workshops across the UK and lobby politicians in an attempt to educate the public and prevent a ban, he said.

"It's the second most sacred symbol in the Hindu tradition which has been used for 5,000 years to ward off evil," Mr Kallidai said.

The forum would make a particular effort to get the message across to Jewish groups, he added.

"After all it is the Jewish anguish that needs to be considered. They were the community that was most affected by the misuse of the swastika so naturally they would have concerns.

"Hindus use the swastika merely as a religious sacrament, to express their devotion to God, surely nobody can have any objections to that," he said.

'Mirror image'

Displaying the swastika is illegal in Germany.

However, Mr Kallidai said a similar ban in the UK would have an adverse affect on Hindus who regarded a swastika in much the same way as a Christian viewed a cross.

Prince Harry has been heavily criticised for his actions

"You find it in houses, temples and in portraits of Hindu gods. A swastika is even painted on the head of a baby who's just had his first hair-cutting sacrament," he said.

The Hindu swastika faces to the right, unlike the one adopted by the Nazis which faces to the left.

It is also traditionally red, a colour regarded as auspicious by Hindus.

"Just because at a particular moment in history one section of society used it, or a mirror image, to unleash xenophobic ideology does not mean Hindus should be punished," Mr Kallidai said.

"It's like saying the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses so therefore let's ban the use of crosses worldwide."

'Positive symbol'

The Hindu Forum's campaign has gained backing from other groups.

Maganbhai Patel of Leicester's Hindu Association said the general public's confusion needed to be addressed.

When I got married, literally as soon as you entered the hall where the marriage took place you saw swastikas everywhere

Kapil Dudakia,
Milton Keynes Hindu Association

"Hindus have been using the swastika for centuries, whereas it was only adopted by Hitler comparatively recently, in the 1920s and 1930s.

"We use it for marriage ceremonies and also for other religious ceremonies and events," Mr Patel said.

And Kapil Dudakia, of Milton Keynes Hindu Association, said the swastika was viewed "positively" by billions of people around the world including followers of the Buddhist and Jain faiths.

"When I got married, literally as soon as you entered the hall where the marriage took place you saw swastikas everywhere. They were also on the invitation cards," he said.

"It's only in certain quarters of the western world where you've got these very negative connotations.

"What we've got to do is separate the evil of Hitler and his ideology from the symbol of the swastika which actually means something quite different," Mr Dudakia said.

Origins of the swastika
 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4183467.stm

The EU has been urged to ban the swastika because of its Nazi associations with hate and racism. But the symbol was around long before Adolf Hitler.

The swastika is a cross with its arms bent at right angles to either the right or left. In geometric terms, it is known as an irregular icosagon or 20-sided polygon.

The word is derived from the Sanskrit "svastika" and means "good to be". In Indo-European culture it was a mark made on people or objects to give them good luck.

It has been around for thousands of years, particularly as a Hindu symbol in the holy texts, to mean luck, Brahma or samsara (rebirth). It can be clockwise or anti-clockwise and the way it points in all four directions suggests stability. Sometimes it features a dot between each arm.

The Nazis hijacked the symbol from its Hindu origins

Prince Harry's Nazi fancy dress uniform sparked anger

Nowadays it is commonly seen in Indian artwork and current and ancient Hindu architecture, and in the ruins of the ancient city of Troy. It has also been used in Buddhism and Jainism, plus other Asian, European and Native American cultures.

The British author Rudyard Kipling, who was strongly influenced by Indian culture, had a swastika on the dust jackets of all his books until the rise of Nazism made this inappropriate. It was also a symbol used by the scouts in Britain, although it was taken off Robert Baden-Powell's 1922 Medal of Merit after complaints in the 1930s.

The Finnish Air Force also used it as its official symbol in World War II, and it still appears on medals, but it had no connection with the Nazi use.

It is rarely seen on its own in Western architecture, but a design of interlocking swastikas is part of the design of the floor of the cathedral of Amiens, France.

Nazi's hooked cross

Swastika is also a small mining town in northern Ontario, Canada, about 580 kilometres north of Toronto. Attempts by the government of Ontario to change the town's name during World War II were rejected by residents.

But it is its association with the National Socialist German Workers Party in the 1930s which is etched on the minds of Western society. Before Hitler, it was used in about 1870 by the Austrian Pan-German followers of Schoenerer, an Austrian anti-Semitic politician.

Its Nazi use was linked to the belief in the Aryan cultural descent of the German people. They considered the early Aryans of India to be the prototypical white invaders and hijacked the sign as a symbol of the Aryan master race.

The Nazi party formally adopted the swastika - what they called the Hakenkreuz, the hooked cross - in 1920. This was used on the party's flag (above), badge, and armband.

In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler wrote: "I myself, meanwhile, after innumerable attempts, had laid down a final form; a flag with a red background, a white disk, and a black swastika in the middle. After long trials I also found a definite proportion between the size of the flag and the size of the white disk, as well as the shape and thickness of the swastika."

The real point is to follow the order of Krsna

April 15th, 1976

This morning's beach walk gave rise to a long, interesting conversation between Prabhupada and the barefoot Dr. Patel. Srila Prabhupada explained everything to him -- from the uselessness of vegetarianism, to the perfection of Communism.

As far as being vegetarian goes, Prabhupada told us about a Jain monk who came to meet him in Berkeley, America. When Prabhupada had asked him what the results of his preaching were, the man replied that he had converted one million people to vegetarianism. But Prabhupada didn't give him much credit for that. Although the Jains advocate nonviolence, Prabhupada pointed out that being vegetarian is violence, since one has to kill the vegetables. Nor does being vegetarian or nonviolent mean one is on the spiritual platform. Garuda is the personal carrier of Lord Visnu, yet he eats snakes; and Krsna ordered Arjuna to kill his enemies. He said that the real point is to follow the order of Krsna.

Dr. Patel interpreted the meaning of this as "feeling that one is doing every thing for Krsna."

Prabhupada responded that the orders are factual, not feelings. He also showed the vital role the spiritual master plays. "Not feel, but actually it's an order. Arjuna did not feel; he took order to kill. Not that you manufacture your idea. No. You take order directly and then do it -- otherwise you'll be responsible. Therefore the guru is required to act as representative of Krsna. If he says, 'Yes, it is all right,' then it is all right. Otherwise not. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah. Otherwise why guru is required? We must take every moment order from him."

Prabhupada told the doctor that simply by becoming Krsna conscious one develops all good qualities, so there is no need for a separate endeavor to be vegetarian.

The discussion moved on to the topic of scientists, and Srila Prabhupada highly praised his disciple Svarupa Damodara, for writing the book The Scientific Basis of Krsna Consciousness. "Dr. Svarupa Damodara, Ph.D.; you have read that book? It is first class. The scientist, so-called scientist, unless he is insane, he cannot say that there is no God. He has written so nice."

"But the real scientists are also God conscious," Dr. Patel interjected.

"That is all right. He is real scientist."

"You have been unfortunately against them," Dr. Patel argued, "but think of Albert Einstein. He was totally God conscious throughout his life."

"Yes," Prabhupada agreed. "He is all right, but mostly they say, 'What is the use of God? Now science, everything science.' They say like that."

Faulty Aryan Invasion Theory: fw by Ashok Chowgule
http://groups.google.co.in/group/Hindu-Religion/browse_thread/thread/6b9528ff15941342

The Faulty Aryan Invasion theory

For a long time now this theory has systematically undermined Hinduism.

We request all Hindus to quote this article whenever they come across the Aryan Invasion theory.

Vivekananda Centre London

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/hinduism/history/history5.shtml

The Aryan Invasion Theory

One of the most controversial ideas about Hindu history is the Aryan invasion theory.

This theory, originally devised by F. Max Muller in 1848, traces the history of Hinduism to the invasion of India's indigenous people by lighter skinned Aryans around 1500 BCE.

The theory was reinforced by other research over the next 120 years, and became the accepted history of Hinduism, not only in the West but in India.

There is now ample evidence to show that Muller, and those who followed him, were wrong.

Why is the theory no longer accepted?
The Aryan invasion theory was based on archaeological, linguistic and ethnological evidence.

Later research has either discredited this evidence, or provided new evidence that combined with the earlier evidence makes other explanations more likely.

Modern historians of the area no longer believe that such invasions had such great influence on Indian history. It's now generally accepted that Indian history shows a continuity of progress from the earliest times to today.

The changes brought to India by other cultures are not denied by modern historians, but they are no longer thought to be a major ingredient in the development of Hinduism.

Dangers of the theory
The Aryan invasion theory denies the Indian origin of India's predominant culture, but gives the credit for Indian culture to invaders from elsewhere.

It even teaches that some of the most revered books of Hindu scripture are not actually Indian, and it devalues India's culture by portraying it as less ancient than it actually is.

The theory was not just wrong, it included unacceptably racist ideas:

    * it suggested that Indian culture was not a culture in its own right, but a synthesis of elements from other cultures
    * it implied that Hinduism was not an authentically Indian religion but the result of cultural imperialism
    * it suggested that Indian culture was static, and only changed under outside influences
    * it suggested that the dark-skinned Dravidian people of the South of India had got their faith from light-skinned Aryan invaders
    * it implied that indigenous people were incapable of creatively developing their faith
    * it suggested that indigenous peoples could only acquire new religious and cultural ideas from other races, by invasion or other processes
    * it accepted that race was a biologically based concept (rather than, at least in part, a social construct) that provided a sensible way of ranking people in a hierarchy, which provided a partial basis for the caste system
    * it provided a basis for racism in the Imperial context by suggesting that the peoples of Northern India were descended from invaders from Europe and so racially closer to the British Raj
    * it gave a historical precedent to justify the role and status of the British Raj, who could argue that they were transforming India for the better in the same way that the Aryans had done thousands of years earlier
    * it downgraded the intellectual status of India and its people by giving a falsely late date to elements of Indian science and culture

THE MOUSE AND THE GITA

There is a story about a guru who had a brahmacari disciple.  He ordered the brahmacari that he should perform Bhakti by reading Gita every day.  So he sat in a cave, reading the Bhagavad-gita.  But there was a small mouse who came to nibble at the Gita, when it was not being read.  He became tired of scaring the mouse away, so he thought, "I need to get a cat to take care of the mouse."  So he got a cat.  The cat kept away the mouse, but it started making sounds because it was hungry.  So he had to feed the cat.  Then he thought, "I need a cow in order to feed the cat milk."  He had to take care of the cow.  Gradually he started giving less and less time for his Gita reading.  Since he had to give the cow so much attention, he thought, "I need someone to take care of the cow," and he hired a man.  The man took care of the cow, but he found that he had to have someone to watch the man, otherwise he was not doing his work properly.  He thought, "This is becoming a little complicated.  I have to get married, then the wife will watch over the man who is taking care of the cow, who is feeding the milk to the cat, to keep away the mouse."  He got married, but his wife wanted certain things.  So there were children, and he had to get some money.  He started some business enterprise and brought some land.  One day, the guru came back to see his disciple.  He said, "What happened?  I ordered you to read Gita, but I see you have got wife, children, family, business, workers and so many things.  You have forgotten the Gita?  Tell me what happened."  He replied, "Gurudeva, I am simply doing all this in the service of the Gita.  In order to read the Gita, I had to do all this.  This is all Gita-samsara."

MORAL: We have to be careful not to perform bhakti for some other objective, that is not pure bhakti.

In case of emergency (ICE) contact number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Green Tomato Salsa

Ingredients:
 6    Green tomatoes; peeled
      -- cored, seeded
      -- coarsely chopped
 1    Granny Smith apple; peeled
      -- cored, coarsely chopped
 1 teaspoon hing
 2 Tbsp Sugar
 1 small jalapeno; seeded, deveined
      -- minced
 2 Tbsp Grated ginger
 2 Tbsp Lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon Salt; plus more to taste
 1 teaspoon Freshly ground pepper
      -- plus more to taste
1 cup  Fresh cilantro (corinander); minced

Place tomatoes in a large cast-iron skillet.  Add apple, hing, sugar, jalapeno, ginger, lemon zest and salt and pepper.  Cook over low heat until thickened into a heavy paste, about 35 to 45 minutes.
Transfer to a glass or ceramic bowl.  Set aside to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Just before serving, toss in the minced cilantro and season to taste with additional salt and pepper. Yield: About 6 cups, depending on the size of the tomatoes.

Honey Mustard Dip Recipe

Ingredients:
1 tub (16 oz. size) sour cream
4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons honey

Directions:

Combine sour cream, Dijon mustard, and honey. Mix well, chill, offer and serve.

MASHED SWEET POTATOES WITH ROCKET AND PEAS
Serves 4 to 6
Stuffed into winter squash of any type, this makes a great main dish for a festive meal. Or, simply serve on its own for a colourful and nourishing side dish. Fresh sage leaves are easy to find this time of year in the produce section of well-stocked supermarkets.

Ingredients:
4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon light olive oil
1 small bunch of Rocket - green leefy veges
1 cup frozen petite green peas, thawed
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
Generous pinch of ground or freshly grated nutmeg
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
2 to 3 fresh sage leaves, thinly sliced

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Combine the diced sweet potatoes with just enough water to cover in a large saucepan. Bring to a rapid simmer, then lower the heat. Cover and simmer steadily until tender, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat the oil with 2 tablespoons water in a medium skillet. Add the Rocket leaves, then cover and cook over medium heat until tender, stirring occasionally, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the heat.

When the sweet potatoes are done, drain them and transfer to a mixing bowl. Add the orange juice and mash until smooth. Stir in the Rocket, followed by the peas, ginger and nutmeg. Stir gently until the mixture is well mixed. Season with salt and pepper. Serve at once, topping each serving with a sprinkling of sliced sage leaves.

Vegetable Cutlet

This recipe was contributed by "my" cousin, chandrika, who is in CA.

Ingredients:

Green Beans(fresh and finely cut) -1/2 cup
     Green Peas -1/4 cup
     Carrots(finely cut)-1/4 cup
     Mashed Potato(cooked) - 1 cup
     Cauliflower(optional) - 1/4 cup
     Salt - as required
     Minced green chillis - 1tsp
     Cumin powder - a pinch.
     Cilantro leaves(finely chopped)- 2 tbsp
Powdered Bread - 2 cups;toast a slice of bread and grind it to a powder

Preparation:
1.Cook all the vegetables and mash them thoroughly. Add minced green chillies, jeera powder, cilantro, and salt.Make it into a paste.
2. Make palm sized pattis from the above vegetable mixture. Dip the patti into the bread powder and shallow fry them. Some may want deep fry, but I prefer shallow fry.
To shallow fry, just add 1 tbsp of oil and place the pattis on them. Fry until golden brown. Serve hot with green chutney or tomato sauce.

(They say) Serves: four

1 tablespoon (20 ml) brown sugar
2 1/2 cups (625 ml) warm water
1/2 (125 ml) gluten flour
2 teaspoons (10 ml) salt
6 cups (1.5 litres) wholemeal flour
1 tablespoon (20 ml) oil
little milk
sesame seeds

1/. Combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water in a small bowl, crumbling the yeast and mixing it well. Leave this bowl undisturbed in a warm place for 10 minutes or until frothy.
2/. Combine the gluten flour, salt, and half the wholemeal flour in a large bowl. Add the yeast and the oil. Mix with a wooden spoon until well combined. Let it stand, covered, for 30 minutes.
3/. Stir the mixture. Add flour to make a soft dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead it for 8-10 minutes or until smooth and elasitc.
4/. Wash and oil the mixing bowl. Roll the dough into a ball, coat it with oil, and place it in the bowl, covered. Let it rise in a warm place for one hour or until it has doubled in size.
5/. Punch down the dough with your fist and knead again lightly. Shape it into 2 loaves. Place the loaves into oiled loaf tins and cover them, placing them in a warm spot for another 30 minutes or until doubled in size. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200 Centigrade/Celsius - 390 F.
6/. Brush the risen loaves with milk and sprinkle them with sesame seeds. Place them in the hot oven and cook for about 45 minutes or until golden, crisp, and hollow-sounding when tapped. Remove the tins from the oven and let stand for 10 miutes.
Now you can carefully invert the bread tins and turn out the loaves, placing them on cooling racks. When the loaves are completely cool, slice and use as required.

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat.
That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it.
Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Laughter Therapy - its no joke:
http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/yod/march98/news.htm

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

Because of the atheistic ways of the world today their biggest fear was that there was no afterlife.

After a long life, the husband was the first to go, and true to his word, he made contact.

"Is that you, Joe?"
"Yes, I've come back like we agreed."
"What's it like?"

"Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex. I have breakfast, off to the golf course, I have sex. I bathe in the sun all day, and then I have sex twice. I have lunch, another romp around the golf course, then sex pretty much all afternoon. After supper, the golf course again. Then have sex until late at night. The next day it starts all over again."

"Oh, Joe, I'm so happy for you, you surely must be in Heaven."

"I think so," the man replied. "My wife has made appetizers and we have a caterer coming with plenty of cookies and cakes for all of our friends."

"I don't mean that," the priest responded. "I mean are you prepared spiritually?"

"Oh, sure," came the reply. "I've got a keg of beer and a case of whiskey."

The ways of this material world - strange but true

My friend's parents had not been out together in quite some time.

One Saturday, as his Mom was finishing the dinner dishes, his father stepped up behind her. "Would you like to go out, girl?" he asked.

Not even turning around, my mother quickly replied,
"Oh, yes, I'd love to!"

They had a wonderful evening, and it wasn't until much later that his Dad finally confessed that his question had actually been directed to the family dog, laying near his Mom's feet on the kitchen floor.

.......of CARS AND COMPUTERS

At a recent computer expo, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon".

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason.

You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shutoff the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock  you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine  off.
