Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                        tad-buddhayas tad-atmanas
                        tan-nisthas tat-parayanah
                        gacchanty apunar-avrttim
                         jnana-nirdhuta-kalmasah

   WORD FOR WORD

   tat-buddhayah--those whose intelligence is always in the Supreme;
   tat-atmanah--those whose minds are always in the Supreme;
   tat-nisthah--those whose faith is only meant for the Supreme;
   tat-parayanah--who have completely taken shelter of Him;
   gacchanti--go; apunah-avrttim--to liberation; jnana--by knowledge;
   nirdhuta--cleansed; kalmasah--misgivings.

TRANSLATION

   When one's intelligence, mind, faith and refuge are all fixed in
   the Supreme, then one becomes fully cleansed of misgivings through
   complete knowledge and thus proceeds straight on the path of
   liberation.

   The Supreme Transcendental Truth is Lord Krsna. The whole
   Bhagavad-gita centers around the declaration that Krsna is the
   Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the version of all Vedic
   literature. Para-tattva means the Supreme Reality, who is
   understood by the knowers of the Supreme as Brahman, Paramatma and
   Bhagavan. Bhagavan, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the
   last word in the Absolute. There is nothing more than that. The
   Lord says, mattah parataram nanyat kincid asti dhananjaya.
   Impersonal Brahman is also supported by Krsna: brahmano hi
   pratisthaham. Therefore in all ways Krsna is the Supreme Reality.
   One whose mind, intelligence, faith and refuge are always in Krsna,
   or, in other words, one who is fully in Krsna consciousness, is
   undoubtedly washed clean of all misgivings and is in perfect
   knowledge in everything concerning transcendence. A Krsna conscious
   person can thoroughly understand that there is duality
   (simultaneous identity and individuality) in Krsna, and, equipped
   with such transcendental knowledge, one can make steady progress on
   the path of liberation.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

December 8th, 1975

Prabhupada is always concerned about our welfare -- not just philosophically, but in many practical ways as well. For example, this morning was very cold; winter is really setting in. He remarked about it on his walk and then asked if the devotees are getting ghee on their capatis. Aksayananda Swami replied that only the guests are given some because it's expensive and not necessary for the devotees.

But Prabhupada disagreed. He said that it is necessary in this season. In the cold weather the devotees must have a little extra ghee and grains. He recommended a mix of channa and urad dals as being both palatable and beneficial -- not too little and not too much. "Unnecessary vairagya," he said, "there is no need. We don't approve that. Yuktahara-viharasya. What you require for keeping health -- but not to eat too much. But what is absolutely required must be done."

Srila Prabhupada is quite pleased with Harikesa's article, "Experimental Knowledge." Last night he had him read it aloud. Then this morning as we walked, he asked him to reiterate some points for the other devotees to hear.

He injected some very amusing observations himself. Recalling his trip to South Africa he said there were many factories for chicken killing. "So I suggested that the egg, you can analyze. Find out the chemicals and create one egg. That was my proposal. "Motioning to Harikesa, he said, "So he is going to create!" We all laughed as Srila Prabhupada continued, "He'll explain how to create egg from... "

"From chemicals," Aksayananda Swami suggested.

And Jnana dasa added, "And make chicken."

Then Harikesa described, "Calcium phosphate and a little sulphur for the yellow. Make some color and cover it in plastic and put it in an incubator, and let a chicken grow."

"And you eat!" Prabhupada concluded.

Aksayananda Maharaja thought that would be a great article.

Prabhupada stopped and said seriously, "My only regret is that these rascals are going as scientists and big men. Simply talk. They cannot create. It is very simple thing. Put some chemicals together, and if you know the chemicals, then why don't you put it? And incubator put, then you don't require to kill so many chicken."

"Actually it's a wonderful challenge," Harikesa agreed. "This big, big scientist, big, big brain... "

But Prabhupada interrupted, "'Big, big monkey, big, big belly. Ceylon jumping -- melancholy!' You do not know this? Baro baro bandolel, baro baro pet, la"ka dingate, matakare het!"

We were all laughing as Prabhupada went on, "This translation was done by one big professor of President's College, Professor Rowe. So these professors required to learn Bengali, so he translated, 'Big, big monkey, big, big belly. Ceylon jumping -- melancholy!'"

Prabhupada was extremely humorous, and his descriptive analogies perfectly fit. Scientists are always full of big talk, saying that life comes from matter and that it is just a combination of chemicals. Yet life is occurring everywhere at every moment, and still they can neither say what the combination is, nor can they reproduce it. Similarly, the big monkey companions of Hanuman were full of bravado and boasts, but when it came to jumping across the ocean from India to Lanka they were "melancholy." Only Hanuman by the grace of Lord Rama could do it.

Nevertheless, despite his often humorous critiques and sometimes general condemnations of the modern materialistic scientists, Prabhupada cautioned us that any attempt to preach on a scientific basis must be done expertly. When Alanatha, a European devotee, told him of plans to publish a magazine in Sweden with articles challenging the material scientists, Prabhupada warned him. "Don't write anything nonsense. It must be very solid. Otherwise you'll be laughing stock. One must be confident before challenging others. In all stages he must be able to defend himself from the opposing elements. Then such challenge is all right. We are confident that this soul cannot be manufactured by any material combination. Therefore we can challenge. And we can defend ourselves in any stage."

Prabhupada: Just like, just like if you want to give me some food to eat. So you should give me to my mouth, not to my rectum. (laughter)

Dr. Patel: But they are doing it now. We are giving enema. We treat with enema in America. (laughs) He said, he said that don't give these things to him because...

Prabhupada: No, no. That is, this is the reason: To give one food, there is the only one mouth. You cannot say, "Because there are so many holes, any hole."

Dr. Patel: But that is not the real..., I mean, real argument that you give...

Prabhupada: No, no, that's right.

Dr. Patel: But my question is...

Dr. Patel: But... Listen. That is why I say, disease or no disease, vidhi's going to help your body and bring you nutrients, even given by intravenously or by rectum or by mouth. By any way.

PURPORT
As far as the duties of mankind are concerned, there are innumerable duties. Every man is duty-bound not only to his parents, family members, society, country, humanity, other living beings, the demigods, etc., but also to the great philosophers, poets, scientists, etc. It is enjoined in the scriptures that one can relinquish all such duties and surrender unto the service of the Lord. So if one does so and becomes successful in the discharge of his devotional service unto the Lord, it is well and good. But it so happens sometimes that one surrenders himself unto the service of the Lord by some temporary sentiment, and in the long run, due to so many other reasons, he falls down from the path of service by undesirable association. There are so many instances of this in the histories. Bharata Mahäräja was obliged to take his birth as a stag due to his intimate attachment to a stag. He thought of this stag when he died. As such, in the next birth he became a stag, although he did not forget the incident of his previous birth. Similarly, Citraketu also fell down due to his offenses at the feet of Çiva. But in spite of all this, the stress is given here to surrendering unto the lotus feet of the Lord, even if there is a chance of falling down, because even though one falls down from the prescribed duties of devotional service, he will never forget the lotus feet of the Lord. Once engaged in the devotional service of the Lord, one will continue the service in all circumstances. In the Bhagavad-gétä it is said that even a small quantity of devotional service can save one from the most dangerous position. There are many instances of such examples in history. Ajämila is one of them. Ajämila in his early life was a devotee, but in his youth he fell down. Still he was saved by the Lord at the end. (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srimad Bhagavatam 1:5:17. purport)

Same translation cited in SB 4:22:37 "If a person, out of sentiment or for some other reason, takes to the shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord and in due course of time does not succeed in coming to the ultimate goal of life or falls down due to lack of experience, there is no loss. But for a person who does not take to devotional service yet executes his material duties very nicely, there is no gain."

PURPORT
Every man everywhere is trying to obtain the greatest amount of sense enjoyment by various endeavors. Some men are busy engaged in trade, industry, economic development, political supremacy, etc., and some of them are engaged in fruitive work to become happy in the next life by attaining higher planets. It is said that on the moon the inhabitants are fit for greater sense enjoyment by drinking soma-rasa, and the Pitåloka is obtained by good charitable work. So there are various programs for sense enjoyment, either during this life or in the life after death. Some are trying to reach the moon or other planets by some mechanical arrangement, for they are very anxious to get into such planets without doing good work. But it is not to happen. By the law of the Supreme, different places are meant for different grades of living beings according to the work they have performed. By good work only, as prescribed in the scriptures, can one obtain birth in a good family, opulence, good education and good bodily features. We see also that even in this life one obtains a good education or money by good work. Similarly, in our next birth we get such desirable positions only by good work. Otherwise, it would not so happen that two persons born in the same place at the same time are seen differently placed according to previous work. But all such material positions are impermanent. The positions in the topmost Brahmaloka and in the lowest Pätäla are also changeable according to our own work. The philosophically inclined person must not be tempted by such changeable positions. He should try to get into the permanent life of bliss and knowledge where he will not be forced to come back again to the miserable material world, either in this or that planet. Miseries and mixed happiness are two features of material life, and they are obtained in Brahmaloka and in other lokas also. They are obtained in the life of the demigods and also in the life of the dogs and hogs. The miseries and mixed happiness of all living beings are only of different degree and quality, but no one is free from the miseries of birth, death, old age and disease. Similarly, everyone has his destined happiness also. No one can get more or less of these things simply by personal endeavors. Even if they are obtained, they can be lost again. One should not, therefore, waste time with these flimsy things; one should only endeavor to go back to Godhead. That should be the mission of everyone's life.  (Srila A.C. PURPORT
A devotee of the Lord automatically becomes uninterested in the enchantment of material existence because he is rasa-graha, or one who has tasted the sweetness of the lotus feet of Lord Kåñëa. There are certainly many instances where devotees of the Lord have fallen down due to uncongenial association, just like fruitive workers, who are always prone to degradation. But even though he falls down, a devotee is never to be considered the same as a fallen karmé. A karmé suffers the result of his own fruitive reactions, whereas a devotee is reformed by chastisement directed by the Lord Himself. The sufferings of an orphan and the sufferings of a beloved child of a king are not one and the same. An orphan is really poor because he has no one to take care of him, but a beloved son of a rich man, although he appears to be on the same level as the orphan, is always under the vigilance of his capable father. A devotee of the Lord, due to wrong association, sometimes imitates the fruitive workers. The fruitive workers want to lord it over the material world. Similarly, a neophyte devotee foolishly thinks of accumulating some material power in exchange for devotional service. Such foolish devotees are sometimes put into difficulty by the Lord Himself. As a special favor, He may remove all material paraphernalia. By such action, the bewildered devotee is forsaken by all friends and relatives, and so he comes to his senses again by the mercy of the Lord and is set right to execute his devotional service.
In the Bhagavad-gétä it is also said that such fallen devotees are given a chance to take birth in a family of highly qualified brähmaëas or in a rich mercantile family. A devotee in such a position is not as fortunate as one who is chastised by the Lord and put into a position seemingly of helplessness. The devotee who becomes helpless by the will of the Lord is more fortunate than those who are born in good families. The fallen devotees born in a good family may forget the lotus feet of the Lord because they are less fortunate, but the devotee who is put into a forlorn condition is more fortunate because he swiftly returns to the lotus feet of the Lord, thinking himself helpless all around.
Pure devotional service is so spiritually relishable that a devotee becomes automatically uninterested in material enjoyment. That is the sign of perfection in progressive devotional service. A pure devotee continuously remembers the lotus feet of Lord Çré Kåñëa and does not forget Him even for a moment, not even in exchange for all the opulence of the three worlds. (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srimad Bhagavatam 1:5:19. purport)

PURPORT
In the previous verse Çukadeva Gosvämé gave the example that the dried leaves of creepers beneath a bamboo tree may be completely burnt to ashes by a fire, although the creepers may sprout again because the root is still in the ground. Similarly, because the root of sinful desire is not destroyed in the heart of a person who is cultivating knowledge but who has no taste for devotional service, there is a possibility that his sinful desires will reappear. As stated in Çrémad-Bhägavatam (10.14.4):

çreyaù-såtià bhaktim udasya te vibho
kliçyanti ye kevala-bodha-labdhaye

Speculators who undergo great labor to gain a meticulous understanding of the material world by distinguishing between sinful and pious activities, but who are not situated in devotional service, are prone to material activities. They may fall down and become implicated in fruitive activities. If one becomes attached to devotional service, however, his desires for material enjoyment are automatically vanquished without separate endeavor. Bhaktiù pareçänubhavo viraktir anyatra ca: [SB 11.2.42] if one is advanced in Kåñëa consciousness, material activities, both sinful and pious, automatically become distasteful to him. That is the test of Kåñëa consciousness. Both pious and impious activities are actually due to ignorance because a living entity, as an eternal servant of Kåñëa, has no need to act for his personal sense gratification. Therefore as soon as one is reclaimed to the platform of devotional service, he relinquishes his attachment for pious and impious activities and is interested only in what will satisfy Kåñëa. This process of bhakti, devotional service to Kåñëa (väsudeva-paräyaëa), relieves one from the reactions of all activities.

Since Mahäräja Parékñit was a great devotee. the answers of his guru, Çukadeva Gosvämé, concerning karma-käëòa and jïäna-käëòa could not satisfy him. Therefore Çukadeva Gosvämé, knowing very well the heart of his disciple, explained the transcendental bliss of devotional service. The word kecit, which is used in this verse, means. "a few people but not all." Not everyone can become Kåñëa conscious. As Kåñëa explains in Bhagavad-gétä (7.3):

manuñyäëäà sahasreñu
kaçcid yatati siddhaye
yatatäm api siddhänäà
kaçcin mäà vetti tattvataù

"Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth." Practically no one understands Kåñëa as He is, for Kåñëa cannot be understood through pious activities or attainment of the most elevated speculative knowledge. Actually the highest knowledge consists of understanding Kåñëa. Unintelligent men who do not understand Kåñëa are grossly puffed up, thinking that they are liberated or have themselves become Kåñëa or Näräyaëa. This is ignorance.

To indicate the purity of bhakti, devotional service, Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé says in Bhakti-rasämåta-sindhu (1.1.11):

anyäbhiläñitä-çünyaà
jïäna-karmädy-anävåtam
änukülyena kåñëänu-
çélanaà bhaktir uttamä
 [Cc. Madhya 19.167]

"One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kåñëa favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service." Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé further explains that bhakti is kleçaghné çubhadä, which means if one takes to devotional service, all kinds of unnecessary labor and material distress cease entirely and one achieves all good fortune. Bhakti is so powerful that it is also said to be mokña-laghutäkåt; in other words, it minimizes the importance of liberation.
Nondevotees must undergo material hardships because they are prone to commit sinful fruitive activities. The desire to commit sinful actions continues in their hearts due to ignorance. These sinful actions are divided into three categories—pätaka, mahä-pätaka and atipätaka—and also into two divisions; prärabdha and aprärabdha. Prärabdha refers to sinful reactions from which one is suffering at the present, and aprärabdha refers to sources of potential suffering. When the seeds (béja) of sinful reactions have not yet fructified, the reactions are called aprärabdha. These seeds of sinful action are unseen, but they are unlimited, and no one can trace when they were first planted. Because of prärabdha, sinful reactions that have already fructified, one is seen to have taken birth in a low family or to be suffering from other miseries.

When one takes to devotional service, however, all phases of sinful life, including prärabdha, aprärabdha and béja, are vanquished. In Çrémad-Bhägavatam (11.14.19) Lord Kåñëa tells Uddhava:

yathägniù susamåddhärciù
karoty edhäàsi bhasmasät
tathä mad-viñayä bhaktir
uddhavainäàsi kåtsnaçaù

"My dear Uddhava, devotional service in relationship with Me is like a blazing fire that can burn to ashes all the fuel of sinful activities supplied to it." How devotional service vanquishes the reactions of sinful life is explained in Çrémad-Bhägavatam (3.33.6) in a verse spoken during Lord Kapiladeva's instructions to His mother, Devahüti. Devahüti said:

yan-nämadheya-çravaëänukértanäd
yat-prahvaëäd yat-smaraëäd api kvacit
çvädo 'pi sadyaù savanäya kalpate
kutaù punas te bhagavan nu darçanät

"My dear Lord, if even a person born in a family of dog-eaters hears and repeats the chanting of Your glories, offers respects to You and remembers You, he is immediately greater than a brähmaëa and is therefore eligible to perform sacrifices. Therefore, what is to be said of one who has seen You directly?"
In the Padma Puräëa there is a statement that persons whose hearts are always attached to the devotional service of Lord Viñëu are immediately released from all the reactions of sinful life. These reactions generally exist in four phases. Some of them are ready to produce results immediately, some are in the form of seeds, some are unmanifested, and some are current. All such reactions are immediately nullified by devotional service. When devotional service is present in one's heart, desires to perform sinful activities have no place there. Sinful life is due to ignorance, which means forgetfulness of one's constitutional position as an eternal servant of God, but when one is fully Kåñëa conscious he realizes that he is God's eternal servant.

In this regard, Çréla Jéva Gosvämé comments that bhakti may be divided into two divisions: (1) santatä, devotional service that continues incessantly with faith and love, and (2) kädäcitké, devotional service that does not continue incessantly but is sometimes awakened. Incessantly flowing devotional service (santatä) may also be divided into two categories: (1) service performed with slight attachment and (2) spontaneous devotional service. Intermittent devotional service (kädäcitké) may be divided into three categories: (1) rägäbhäsamayé, devotional service in which one is almost attached, (2) rägäbhäsa-çünya-svarüpa-bhütä, devotional service in which there is no spontaneous love but one likes the constitutional position of serving, and (3) äbhäsa-rüpä, a slight glimpse of devotional service. As for atonement, if one has caught even a slight glimpse of devotional service, all needs to undergo präyaçcitta, atonement, are superseded. Therefore atonement is certainly unnecessary when one has achieved spontaneous love and, above that, attachment with love, which are signs of increasing advancement in kädäcitké. Even in the stage of äbhäsa-rüpä bhakti, all the reactions of sinful life are uprooted and vanquished. Çréla Jéva Gosvämé expresses the opinion that the word kärtsnyena means that even if one has a desire to commit sinful actions, the roots of that desire are vanquished merely by äbhäsa-rüpä bhakti. The example of bhäskara, the sun, is most appropriate. The äbhäsa feature of bhakti is compared to twilight, and the accumulation of one's sinful activities is compared to fog. Since fog does not spread throughout the sky, the sun need do no more than merely manifest its first rays, and the fog immediately disappears. Similarly, if one has even a slight relationship with devotional service, all the fog of his sinful life is immediately vanquished. (Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Livingstone speaks to Moscow Mayor about harassment of Russian Hindus
........British Parliamentarians launching campaign at House of Commons

London 16th January - The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone handed over letters expressing concern about the alleged harassment of Russian Hindus by the Moscow Government and the Russian Orthodox Church to the visiting Mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov in London on 14th January, even as British Parliamentarians led by Ashok Kumar MP, Lord Dholakia and Baroness Flather got ready to host the launch of the Defend Russian Hindus campaign at the House of Commons on 18th January.

“The Mayor of London has successfully led social integration and community cohesion in London which is one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan cities in the world,� said Ramesh Kallidai, secretary general of the Hindu Forum of Britain. “When we asked him to hand over our letters of concern to the Mayor of Moscow who was attending the Russian Winter Festival at Trafalgar Square, Mr Livingstone immediately agreed in keeping with the traditions of justice and freedom that London continues to stand for.�

Following the meeting between the two Mayors, British Parliamentarians and members of the Hindu, Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities will adopt a resolution at the Defend Russian Hindus launch at the House of Commons, urging the Moscow Government to stop harassment of minority religions in Russia. Parliamentarians from all three parties will later hand a copy of this resolution to the Russian Ambassador in London.

In January 2004, the Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov signed a decree allocating land in northwest Moscow for construction of a new temple in place of an older Hindu temple which had been demolished for construction of a commercial venture. This was followed by mass protests orchestrated by the Russian Orthodox Church against the building of the temple in the newly allocated land. In October 2005 the Mayor repealed the decree and cancelled the allocation of land and further ordered the removal of a temporary Hindu shrine that devotees had erected from the newly allocated land. During this time, miscreants who had heard of Orthodox opposition to Russian Hindus entered a Hindu temple and beat 30 people including women and children with iron rods, who were hospitalised with fractured skulls.

 â€œThe only Hindu temple in Moscow had been demolished last year, leaving some 15,000 Indians and 10,000 Russian followers of Hinduism without a place of worship,â€? said Ramesh Kallidai, secretary general of the Hindu Forum of Britain, one of the organisations hosting the meeting. “Now the Mayor of Moscow and the Russian Orthodox Church are together trying to stop Hindus from having a place of their own.â€?

Earlier, Archbishop Nikon of the Russian Orthodox Church had described Lord Krishna as an “evil demon� and the “personified power of hell opposing God� in a letter to the Mayor of Moscow urging him to stop the construction of a Hindu temple in Moscow.

“It is unbelievable that in a country as industrialised and modern as Russia, we are seeing religious intolerance of a level reminiscent of medieval times,� continued Ramesh Kallidai. “We urge people of all faith traditions to intervene and stop this kind of outrageous behaviour against the peace-loving Hindus of Russia. The international communities continue to monitor the situation closely.�

 Other Parliamentarians attending the Defend Russian Hindus reception hosted by Ashok Kumar MP include Lord Dholakia, Baroness Shreela Flather, Dr Phyllis Starkey MP, John Grogan MP, Angela Watkinson MP, John McDonnell MP, Shailesh Vara MP, Piara Khabra MP, Jim Dobbin MP and Mark Lazarowicz MP . Parliamentarians from all three parties are expected to join members of the Hindu, Jewish and Christian communities on a visit to Russia later this year to express their concerns on the treatment of minority faith communities.

The Mayor of London handed over separate letters written by the Hindu Forum of Britain, the Hindu Council of UK, International Society for Krishna Consciousness and BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mission. Reproduced below is the text of the letter written by the Hindu Forum of Britain.

We are writing this letter on behalf of 270 Hindu organisations that are affiliated formally as members of the Hindu Forum of Britain, the representative body of the Hindu community in UK.

There are over 100,000 Hindus in Russia. In Moscow alone, there are 5000 Hindus of Indian origin and over 10,000 Hindus of Russian origin. However, this peaceful community is being denied a simple right to have a place of worship where they can pray, counsel and celebrate their faith.

We learnt that two years ago the Moscow Government asked Hindus to vacate their only temple in Moscow in exchange for a piece of land on which they could build a bigger temple. After the land was allocated to the Hindu temple, the original temple was demolished.

After learning of the allocation of land to the Hindu temple, some members of the Russian Orthodox Church orchestrated mass protests and started a misinformation campaign against Hindus in the Russian media. Many Hindus were victimised, threatened, bullied, and even beaten and subject to violence in different regions of Russia.

The Hindu community in the UK and other parts of the world were very unhappy to learn that in October 2005, the Moscow Government cancelled the land order and took away the piece of land given for the construction of the Hindu temple citing a small technical detail that could easily have been rectified. Now, the 15,000 Hindus in Moscow have no place to worship. The consecrated Deities of Radha and Krishna will have no home. The pattern of events suggests a planned and orchestrated scheme to subjugate the freedom of worship of Russian Hindus and to deny them a basic place where they can congregate peacefully and pray.

To add to this, around the time of Indian Prime Minister’s state visit to Moscow to meet Russian President Putin, Archbishop Nikon, a leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, called the Hindu God, Lord Krishna an ‘evil demon, the personified power of hell opposing Godâ€?, and “a livid lascivious youthâ€?.  The Archbishop further requested the Mayor to ban construction of a proposed Hindu temple in Moscow saying it would otherwise become “an idolatrous disgrace erected for the glory of wicked and malicious ‘god’ Krishnaâ€?.

Hindus all over the world have reacted with outrage and shock at these comments of the Archbishop, and disbelief to note that a great country like Russia has subject religious minorities to this treatment. As a result, The Defend Russian Hindus Campaign, launched by the Hindu Forum of Britain, Hindu Council UK, National Council of Hindu Temples UK, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Vishwa Hindu Parishad UK, Hindu Council of Australia, Hindu American Foundation and many other worldwide Hindu organisations, will be launching its first awareness event from the House of Commons on 18th January 2006.

The event aims to build awareness about the harassment and discrimination against Russian Hindus by sections of the Russian Orthodox Church and the actions of the Moscow Government with regard to the cancellation of the land order, despite support from the Central Government. We note that the Moscow Government has gone so far as to cut off gas, electricity and water to the make-shift temple on the new land, in violation of all known human rights legislation in Europe.

In addition to the event at the House of Commons, the Defend Russian Hindus campaign will be launching a three-pronged plan to communicate the situation of Russian Hindus through media, community and political networks. We are also planning a Parliamentary delegation to visit Russia in the Spring of 2006. We will be  contacting the heads of the G8 countries to take note of the treatment of religious minorities in Russia, which is poised to take over the Presidency of the G8 later this year.

We would be most grateful if you could kindly look at this matter in favourable light.  Hinduism is one of the world’s oldest faith traditions and has always remained peaceful and non-violent. The universal world view of the Hindu tradition, which accepts the whole world as one family and all other faith communities as different ways to the same Truth have been appreciated by world leaders. Therefore, at a time when the world is moving towards an era of tolerance, respect and understanding, it seems rather odd that the Moscow Government chooses to ignore the human rights and freedom of worship for one of the most peaceful faith traditions in the world.

Famed Krisha Temple Oversight Changes Hands on Schedule

UDUPI, INDIA, January 16, 2006: The two-year-long paryaya (right to conduct the worship) of Sri Vishvapriya Theertha Swami of the Admar mutt will come to a close in the wee hours of January 18 when he hands over the charge of the famous Sri Krishna temple here to his successor Sri Vidyasagar Theertha Swami of Krishnapura mutt. Ever since he took charge of the temple affairs on January 18, 2004, the Admar seer had involved himself in several social-oriented schemes to help rural people. His involvement in social work and participation in the daily Sri Krishna pooja at the temple was widely appreciated. The seer was in trouble when he took steps to demolish the old gopuram in front of the temple and put up a new one in its place. The move did not go down well with a section of the people, especially the Kuruba community, and they resorted to widespread protests demanding the arrest of the seer and taking over the temple administration by the state government. However, the issue died down after the pontiff succeeded in demolishing the old gopuram and constructing a 65-ft huge and magnificent Kanaka gopuram at a cost of US$156,000. The swamiji would hand over the charge to his successor after performing the Nairmalya Visarjana pooja to the presiding deity in the wee hours of January 18. Administration of the temple rotates among the eight ashrams founded by the eight successors of Madhvacharya, founder of the dualistic school of Hinduism in in the twelfth century.

Violent Video Games Make People More Aggressive

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, January 10, 2006: People who play a lot of violent computer games may become aggressive, says a new study that confirms a link between violent computer games and destructive behavior. Earlier research has found people who play such games are more likely to be aggressive though some say this just shows violent people gravitate towards them. However, researchers at University of Missouri-Columbia monitored the brain activity of 39 game players and found changes in their brain activity when they play violent video games, reported BBC News. They measured a type of brain activity called the P300 response, which reflects the emotional impact of an image. The researchers gave the game players opportunity to punish a pretend opponent; those with the greatest reduction in P300 were much more severe with the kinds of punishments being picked. "This is the first study to show that exposure to violent games has effects on the brain that predict aggr essive behavior," Bartholow, the lead researcher of the study, said. "People who play a lot of violent video games didn't see them as much different from neutral. They become desensitized. However, their responses are still normal for the nonviolent negative scenes," he said. The findings will back up what many have argued over recent years with the growth in games, there may be a growth of graphic violence.

The Spiritual Slaughter House of Youth - Most Christian Youth Abandon Religion After Entering College

USA, January 12, 2006: (HPI note: The disaffection of youth for religion is a cross-cultural phenomenon.) A story in the Christian Post details how leaders of church denominations, youth pastors and parachurch organizational leaders gathered to brainstorm ways to keep college students from falling away from the Christian faith and how to correct the dysfunctions in youth ministry. Mission America and the National Network of Youth Ministries convened the January 11-12 meeting in Orlando. "A significant majority of our church's youth are leaving the foundations of their faith when they transition from high school," said Paul Fleischmann, president of the National Network of Youth Ministries. Research has shown that 69-94 percent of Christian youths forsake their faith after high school, while one study by the Southern Baptist Convention found that 88 percent of youth are leaving the Church. A pilot study of 69 college students conducted by Fuller Theological Seminary was presented during the meeting. Results found that 100 percent of the youth group graduates had since used alcohol. The study also found, however, that the greater their faith maturity, the less likely the students were to engage in risk behaviors. Fleischmann cited youth culture, a lack of parental involvement, and biblical illiteracy as major contributors to the issues at hand.

Hindu temple coming up in north England

By Prasun Sonwalkar, London: In the latest example of exquisitely carved Hindu temples in Britain, a team of four marble masons from India has arrived to build a temple in Middlesbrough in north England.

There are several Hindu temples in towns across Britain - many of them featuring idols and stonework brought from India or executed here by experts brought in from India.

The most popular of such temples is the Swaminarayana temple in Neasden, London, and the Jain temple in Leicester.

For the temple under construction in Middlesbrough, blocks of marble have been imported from the same quarries from where marble was used during the construction of the Taj Mahal - the Chosira mines in Rajasthan.

The team of four marble masons led by Shokat Ali Rander Munnabhai is currently working on the 150,000 pounds temple inside the Hindu Cultural Centre in North Ormesby.

The entire marble shipment arrived in 76 boxes in October.

"It took us two days just to unload it all. About 15 masons worked for six months to carve the marble by hand and it is a very intricate design," Hindu Cultural Centre's president Krishan Nath told reporters.

"The whole plan for the temple started two years ago and prior to this, our temple was made of wood. We thought we would make the temple like the traditional ones in India that are marble.

"The priest and I appealed to the congregation to buy one square metre of marble each that costs 120 pounds. One family bought one metre, then another would buy two metres and then someone else would buy three metres. It just went from there," he said.

"Once this (the temple) is finished, it will last for 100 years," Nath said.

The four masons will stay until Feb 20.

Selective Abortion: Ten Million Girls "Missing" In India

INDIA, January8, 2006: Around 10 million female foetuses may have been aborted in India over the past two decades because of ultrasound sex screening and a traditional preference for boys which cuts across all India's religions, according to a study published online in The Lancet. Researchers based in Canada and India looked through data from a national survey, conducted among 1.1 million households in 1998, and at information about 133,738 births that took place in 1997. They found that in cases where the preceding child was a girl, the gender ratio for a second birth was just 759 girls to 1,000 boys. And when the two previous children were girls, this ratio fell even further, to 719 girls to 1,000 boys. On the other hand, when the preceding child or children were male, the gender ratio among successive births was about the same.

"We conservatively estimate that prenatal sex determination and selective abortion accounts for 0.5 million missing g irls yearly," said one of the authors, Prabhat Jha of St. Michael's Hospital at the University of Toronto, Canada. "If this practice has been common for most of the past two decades since access to ultrasound became widespread, then a figure of 10 million missing female births would not be unreasonable." The "girl deficit" is far more prominent in educated women, the investigators found. The number of boys born as second children was twice as high among this group than among illiterate mothers. However, the deficit did not vary by religion.

The study published by the London-based medical journal comes on the heels of a report last October by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which warned that infanticide or abortion was driving India towards a gender imbalance with alarming social consequences. Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Pakistan and South Korea face similar problems, the UNFPA said.

American Scholar on Indian Christian Schools - The War Against Hinduism

Another way that India is slowly losing its Vedic culture is through the process of secular or English and Christian education. Of course, in public schools all Vedic books have been removed from the curriculum. So there are no possibilities to study the ancient Indian literature or art. Thus Vedic values are no longer part of what the children are taught. Furthermore, the Christian schools, often staffed by Christian missionaries, can teach Christian values in their classes, and include a short study of the Bible everyday, or of a Koran if it´s an Islamic school. The so-called secular govern-ment has even helped them with free land and facilities. Since these schools offer English in their education, along with good discipline,  many of the middle classes of Indians are favouring sending the children to these schools. Today, in the Indian cities, many parents of today´s children are the graduates of Christian schools, who also send their own children to such schools. As this trend continues, there will be a decreasing number of Hindus in the educated sector.
Thus, children in India, with the help of the secular government, are learning Christian values and perceiving their own history and culture as something less than honourable. They are taught that such important books as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Bhagavat Purana and other Vedic texts are nothing more than mythology, and not a reuslt of one of the most profound civilisations of the world. They are also taught that their own God is but a demon and the only real way to God is through Jesus.

An example of this is that a few devotees from the New Delhi Iskcon (Hare Krishna) temple go out and give presentations at children´s classes in schools.

Some of the questions that are asked by the children are, "Who is your God?" and "What can your God do for me?" and so on. Obviously, these questions are nothing but a direct result of the Christian and English-oriented education that these children are receiving. Now I ask anyone, 'Isn´t this practically a covert form of conversion?´ This form of education indoctrinates the children to doubt their own culture, and disrespect their own history and traditions. As a result of this form of education, the Hindu population is slowly forgetting the unique history and lofty culture of their homeland.

As I travelled around, it was not unusual to see elementary schools aroundIndia with the name something like 'Saint Xavier´s School´. People should know that this Francis Xavier, who is now one of the greatest so-called 'saints´, feverishly declared, "When I have finished baptising the people, I order them to destory the huts in which they keep their idols; and I have them break the statues of their idols into tiny pieces, since they are now Christians. I could never come to an end describing to you the great consolation which fills my soul when I see idols being destroyed by the hands of those who had been idolaters," (from The Letters and Instructions of Francis Xavier, 1993, pp 117-8). This was his goal: to destroy Indian culture and make India a Christian nation. So it is ironic that now India embraces the schools that honour him in this way. How could they not know his true intention?

What is often not recognised is that, up until recently, for the last 50 years the politicians who have been directing the destiny of India are the ones who have an anti-Hindu attitude. They have set the eocnomic direction and the educational policies that the country has been forced to follow. They have also promised the protection of the religious minorities with the hope of acquiring votes. This has been one of the reasons why the secularists in the Congress Party have treated everything that is Hindu with disdain.

Another aspect of the loss of Vedic culture in India is that the younger Indian generation, especially in ages from 15 to 25, are readily giving up Vedic customs to follow the more decadent so-called freedom of the West. They see the western movies, they read what the celebrities say in the papers, and they admire them and want to adopt their form of dress and lifestyles. Thus, in big cities like Mumbai, you have Indian couples living together without marriage, which is something you never would have seen before, a few years back. Now the Vedic principles are looked upon as something obsolete, something that restrict the style that those who look to the West want to adopt. Thus, they are leaving Indian traditions behind and losing respect for anything Vedic. In this way, they adopt foreign standards, or lose so much respect for Indian and Vedic values that they become embarrased to admit their Hindu background and heritage. Furthermore, Sanskrit scholars at the temples are also slowly dying out, and the modern Indians view the Ramayana and Mahabharata as merely myths or gaudy television shows.

Although India has been invaded by outsiders so many times and has always survived, what we are talking about is more than mere property or geography. What is actually being threatened is the basis of Indian culture itself. As younger generations give up their Vedic heritage, even if they return to it later when they are older and looking for more philosophical support, with whatever percentage of loss that occurs with each generation, time has shown that it is never fully recovered. A portion of it is lost forever.

Another way of looking at this is that India presently enjoys an 85 per cent Hindu majority in its population. This may sound quite significant, but in actuality this includes 15 per cent Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains. So it is really only a 70 per cent majority. How many more generations will go by before we see a big drop in this percentage due to the process of secular (meaning Christian or English, or even Islamic) education, or with the present rate of conversions by tactless Christians? This percentage could easily drop well below 50 per cent in only several more generations at the present rate of change.

How many more generations will it take before the Hindu majority is no longer a majority, but a minority in its own country? As Hinduism declines, you will see that the demands on the government and those voted into politics will also change, and the laws will also alter more in favour of the increasing minority religions at the expense of declining Hinduism. Then, as the years go by, there will appear only small clusters of Hindu or Vedic communities, most likely centred around prominent holy places, until the more aggressive religions act in ways to diminish these as well, in the same way that they are presently doing in other countries.

The point of all this information is that it is time for all Hindus and followers of the Vedic culture, Sanatana dharma, to realise what is actually happening and give up their timidness or nonchalance and speak out while such freedom still exists. We must become more pro-active for defending this culture. The point is that if you do not take it seriously, I can assure you that there are others who can take this inaction and tolerance extremely seriously to promote their own goals and religions in India. It is because of this that India may not always remain the homeland of an active and thriving Vedic culture as it is now. We need to protect whatever is left of it and maintain the present liberties that Hindus still have in India. Then we all can continue to engage in Vedic traditions without hindrance, and with full freedom. For this, we need to unite ourselves in a concerted effort to make this happen. And it most certainly is possible.

Recently, as told to me by Professor Subhash Kak, it was noted in a reputable publication that now one per cent of the Russian population claim that they are Hindu. The article stated that this was primarily due to the preaching efforts of Iskcon. This shows a major social impact. This shows what is possible if we can work together in a concerted effort. This is why I am convinced that if we all work in a pro-active way under the banner of a united family of Vedic followers, we can keep and even expand the present freedom that we now have to practise Vedic traditions, and keep India as the homeland of Vedic culture-the most ancient roots of humanity.

India must be protected and kept as the homeland of the Vedic heritage, Sanatana dharma, Hinduism. Without it, what is its value, in spite of whatever else it accomplishes? The value of Hinduism and India are clearly expressed in the words of the famous English theosophist, Dr Annie Besant. She put great emphasis on the value of India, its history, the Vedic culture, and its importance to the world. As written in the cover notes from the book, Hindus, Life-Line of India, by G.M. Jagtiani, she says: "After a study of some 40 years and more of the great religions of the world, I find none so perfect, none so scientific, none so philosophic, and none so spiritual as the great religion known by the name of Hinduism. The more you know it, the more you will love it; the more you try to understand it, the more deeply you will value it. Make no mistake: without Hinduism, India has no future. Hinduism is the soil into which India´s roots are struck, and torn of that she will inevitably wither, as a tree torn out from its place. Many are the religions and many are the races flourishing in India, but none of them stretches back into the far dawn of her past, nor are they necessary for her endurance as a nation. Everyone might pass away as they came, but India would still remain. But let Hinduism vanish and what is she? A geographical _expression of the past, a dim memory of a perished glory, her literature, her art, her monuments, all have Hindudom written across them. And if Hindus do not maintain Hinduism, who shall save it? If India´s own children do not cling to her faith, who shall guard it? India alone can save India, and India and Hinduism are one."

In this light, it is absolutely necessary that as followers of Sanatana dharma, Vedic culture, we realise that we need to repair whatever differences we have between us regarding whatever issues there may be. This is necessary in order to work with some cooperation with whoever we can, if we expect to be a substantial force in defending the Vedic cause. Otherwise, all the issues that invariably come up, although these should not be ignored, should not take so much of our attention that our preaching stops. Otherwise, we will only serve as contributors to the continuing deterioration of all spiritual standards as the age of Kali progresses. This preaching, of course, means that we must all stay in touch with and practise the Vedic standards.

We cannot allow ourselves to be led into the danger of endless debate that leads to inaction. We all must be pro-active in some way to help defend and spread Vedic culture. Then we can work together to keep the freedom we presently have to practise the Vedic traditions and keep India as the homeland of a thriving, dynamic, and still living tradition. Such freedom does not come without its challenges, and we must be prepared as a society to meet those challenges. To take such freedom for granted means that it is only a matter of time before it is lost. And that is exactly what some people want to happen. So we must be willing to work all the harder to prevent such a decline of our Vedic heritage.

GOPAL DEFEATS THE DIGVIJAYA PANDIT

Sometimes great authorities will teach asat sastra, a teaching which is not actually bona fide, but is just something to beat the heads of the atheists and kick them out.  There is one story of Gopala Bhar.  He was employed by king Krsnacandra, who lived about 300 years ago in Bengal, and Gopala was the joker.  He was also very intelligent, and very bold.  There was a digvijaya pandita, who came to Bengal.  At that time, the main king or emperor of Bengal was a Muslim, but in different provinces there were also Hindu kings, and Maharaja Krsnacandra was one such Hindu king, he was king in that area of Navadvipa.  So this digvijaya pandita had been going all over India defeating all the panditas, and getting it written down, "I have defeated this one, I have defeated that one."  So he came to the muslim emperor, saying, "I am the great digvijaya pandita, I have come now to Bengal and I'm making a challenge.  You bring your best pandita.  I will defeat him."  What he expected was that whoever he defeated had to become his disciple.  So he made a very strong challenge.  The muslim emperor turned to his adviser and said, "What should we do?"  The minister replied, "Well, you know all our best panditas are down in Navadvipa."  That was the centre of learning.  So a message was sent to Maharaja Krsnacandra that a big pandita has come to the muslim emperor and given challenge.  "Send your best panditas, and if I defeat them they must become my disciples."  So it was very heavy for Maharaja Krsnacandra, because he knew, "The muslim emperor is expecting that I send some panditas that can defeat him.  It is all now on my shoulders."  So then, together with his advisers, he decided to bring in the big panditas.  They  explained to the panditas what was going on, but all the panditas in Navadvipa said, "No.  We're not getting involved in this."  They didn't want their prestige to be diminished, they were thinking, "If we go there and he defeats us then it means we have to become his disciples, and then our prestige will be diminished.  So we'll just stay out of this."  The king was very much worried, because he was a kshatriya, he cannot force Brahmins to do his will.  He can only ask, and if they say no then he's in a helpless situation.  So he was very worried.  Then Gopala Bhar came in, and saw the king sitting there very morose.  "Hey king!  What's wrong?"  "Oh Gopala, look don't bother me now."  Gopala said, "Oh, come on, What's the matter."  The king was very sober, "Look Gopala, we don't want to laugh now.  We don't want to hear jokes.  Please come back another day."  "No no," Gopala said, "Why don't you just tell me?"  "All right," the king said, and then he explained everything.  Then Gopala said, "All right, then I will go."  "You?" the king asked.  "Yes, I will go, and I will defeat this pandita.  No problem."  So then Gopala went home, and he dressed himself up like a big Brahmin.  Cut his hair with a big sikha, huge tilaka and a harinam chadar, looking very bonafide.  And Brahmins used to carry their sastra in a roll, a scroll wrapped in silk cloth, under their arm.  So he was looking for something to wrap up, and he had in his house one old broken bed.  So in Bengal these beds are strips of cloth which are woven together, like a deck chair, and in Bengali they call such a bed a kata.  Because the English settled India, many English words come from the Indian language.  In English such a bed is called a cot.  So he took a leg from that old broken bed, and he wrapped in cloth.  He went back to the king, and showed himself.  Everyone was astonished.  "Wow, he looks like a real heavy Brahmin."  He was really getting into the role.  "What is this sastra?" the king asked, and Gopala replied, "This is my Khatvanga Purana."  "But we never heard of this sastra," everyone was saying.  "When I come back I will tell you," Gopala said, and then he left.  Actually what it was, was that khata means "bed", anga means "part of" or in this case the leg, and purana means "old."  So it was "an old leg of a bed," or "Khatvanga Purana."  So this was his sastra.  Then he went to the emperors palace, and he came walking in.  "Oh, what great pandita is this?"  "My name is Gopala Bhar Das Pandit Maharaja.  I have been sent by the king Maharaja Krsnacandra to defeat this so-called digvijaya.  I am master of the four Vedas, and especially my field of expertise is the Jyotir-Veda (which includes astrology."  He was speaking so confidently, and he was looking fearless.  Everyone was very impressed, and even this digvijaya pandita was thinking, "He's not at all afraid of me.  He must be a heavy one."  So the digvijaya pandita saw this scripture that Gopala was carrying, and he asked, "What is this scripture, may I ask?"  "This," Gopala replied, "Is my Khatvanga Purana, of which I am a master."  The pandita was saying, "Wait a minute, I've heard of Visnu Purana, Skanda Purana.  I've never heard of Katvanga Purana.  May I see this?"  Then Gopal Bhar exclaimed, "Ohh!"  He was looking into the sky and going, "Ohhh!  I have just noticed the angle of the sun, and I am remembering now the date today.  We have just now entered a most auspicious moment, according to the Jyotir-Veda.  Anybody who takes a hair from the head of this pandita," pointing to the digvijaya, "will immediately be granted with long life, and wealth in this lifetime, and liberation in the next.  All auspicious result will come in this life and the next, simply by taking a hair from such a great digvijaya pandita as this."  So then immediately everyone in the court ran and was taking hairs from the pandita.  The pandita was being driven, and they were taking from his beard and everything.  He went running and they were all chasing him.  He was gone.  Gopala Bhar returned to Navadvipa with his head in the air.  "Don't worry King, he is gone.  That pandita has run off.  He's completely defeated, completely finished."  "Oh!" the king said.  "How did you do this?"  "As you were saying, I have this Katvanga Purana.   I am a master of the learning of this."  And when he opened it he showed a leg of a bed, and everyone was astonished.  Then he explained the story, and they could all understand that he had just played a big joke, that's all.  Then they asked him, "How is it that you could go so confidently, so boldly into that courtyard of the muslim emperor, simply dressed up like a brahmin and carrying an old bed leg under your arm.  How were you so sure that you could defeat him just by a trick?"  Gopala replied, "As soon as I heard that this pandita was going to the muslim king and declaring that he is a great learned scholar, and that he would defeat any other scholar, then I knew that he must have been a fool.  He must have actually been a kind of rascal because what do muslims know about Vedic learning.  Why did he go to the muslim, why didn't he come down here or go to another Hindu king.  He was going to the muslim king, so I knew that he must just be a rascal, trying to make a big show, so I did not think I had anything to fear when I went there."

MORAL: The digvijaya pandita was just actually a rascal, which means not really one who's situated on the platform of knowledge, just someone who's trying to gain some name and fame.  That's a rascal.  Rascals can be defeated by rascal means.

Vegetarian 10-minute tortellini
You can't get much easier than this meal idea - it's on the table in 10 minutes at the most and requires only five ingredients.

Ingredients:
300g pack fresh spinach and cheese tortellini
1 Tbsp olive oil
250g pack cherry tomatoes
1 bunch parsley, leaves roughly chopped
3 Tbsp finely grated Parmesan

Method:
Boil the pasta for 2 minutes until just cooked. Meanwhile, heat the oil in the frying pan and sizzle the tomatoes until they start to blister.

When the pasta is cooked, drain it quickly, reserving some cooking water. Put the tomatoes back on a high heat. Tip in the pasta, parsley, a splash of cooking water and most of the Parmesan. Bubble everything together, season to taste. Offer and serve with remaining Parmesan.

Primavera with Zucchini, Tomato and Corn
Serves 6
Ingredients:
1 pound (1/2 kg - 500grms) Mostaccioli, Medium Shells or other medium pasta shape, uncooked
1 tbsp. Oilive oil
1 tsp hing
1 medium red cabbage, finely chopped
2 cups chopped zucchini
2 cups chopped fresh tomato
1 cup fresh corn or 1 cup frozen corn, thawed
1/2 tsp. hot red pepper flakes
1 cup skim milk
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup minced Italian flat-leaf parsley
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Additional freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional garnish)

Prepare pasta according to package directions; drain.

Heat the Olive oil in a large skillet. Add the hing, chopped red cabbage and zucchini and cook over medium-high heat until the cabbage goes soft and gets a golden cooked look to it. Reduce heat to medium and add the tomato, corn, red pepper flakes, skim milk and Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese is melted and the vegetables are hot. Add the pasta and parsley and mix thoroughly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Cheese Sauce:

Ingredients:
½ cup butter or Vegetarian / Vegan margarine
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3½ cups milk
½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper

Method:
1. Melt butter in a 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat.
Whisk in flour, and cook, whisking constantly, for 1 minute.

2. Gradually whisk in milk. Bring to a boil, and cook, whisking constantly, for 1 to 2 minutes or until thickened.

3. Whisk in cheese, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.

This can then be poured over or served with your vegetable preps.

Celeriac Remoulade

Remoulade is just another word for a salad. This one is quick, tasty and very simple to make.

Serves 2
Ingredients:
½ small celeriac, cut into thin strips
½ lemon, juice only
2 tbsp double (heavy) cream
3 tbsp good-quality mayonnaise (see our recipe)
2 tsp Dijon mustard
salt and white pepper

Method:
1. Place the celeriac strips into a bowl along with the lemon juice and toss to combine.

2. Mix the double cream, mayonnaise and mustard together then stir into the celeriac.

3. Season with salt and white pepper.

4. Place in the fridge for a couple of hours for the flavours to develop before serving.

Eggless Mayonnaise
This mayonnaise tastes so much like the real thing you'd swear it has cholesterol, and heaps of bad karma, but since it doesn't, feel free to spread it around!

Ingredients (use vegan versions):
3 tablespoons lemon juice
210 ml soya milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon prepared vegan mustard
6 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Put all the ingredients except the oil in a blender. Blend on the lowest speed. Gradually - literally one drop at a time - add the oil until the mixture starts to thicken. Continue blending until thickened and smooth. Transfer to a jar and store in the refrigerator.

Welsh Llanddarog Fair Cakes

Makes 6
Ingredients:
12oz (335g) self-raising flour
8oz (225g) butter
6oz (160g) caster (refined granulated) sugar
4oz (110g) mixed fruit (sultanas, raisins, currants)
3 tbsp beer (yes, and of course we would use non-alcoholic beer if making this recipe - look in you super-market for it)

Method:
1. Pre-heat oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas 5.

2. Rub the butter into the flour and add the sugar.

3. Mix in the beer to form a soft dough.

4. Roll out on a floured surface to a thickness of ½ inch.

5. Shape into 6 rounds and press the fruit into the surface.

6. Bake for 15 minutes.
 

Buttercream Icing Recipe
Makes 5 cups

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter or margarine
8 ounces cream cheese softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pound confectioner's sugar.

Directions:
Combine the butter, cream cheese and vanilla. Gradually add the powdered sugar while beating vigorously. Thin with milk as needed.

(This recipe is very easy in a food processor and freezes well)

Mango and Cardamom Lassi

Crushed pistachios and cardamon bring an exotic scent and flavour to this simple smoothie of mango and mild yoghurt.

Serves 3-4
Ingredients:
425g/15oz tinned mango pieces in syrup
250g/9fl oz bio low-fat plain yoghurt
1 tbsp green cardamom pods
1 tbsp shelled pistachio nuts
ice cubes, to serve

Method:
1. Use a sieve to drain the tin of mango thoroughly, reserving the syrup. Weigh out 250g/9oz of mango pieces and place them in a blender with the yoghurt.

2. Split open the cardamon pods to extract the dark seeds. Crush them well and add 1/2 tsp of the spice to the blender. Reserve the rest to use as a garnish.

3. Blend the mixture until thoroughly pureed and silky. Then thin it to the desired consistency using the reserved syrup from the tin of mangoes, adding a little syrup at a time and blending well after each addition. Chill thoroughly.

4. Roughly chop or crush the pistachios and mix them with the little bit of remaining cardamon. Place one or two ice cubes in each glass, pour in the mango lassi and sprinkle with some of the pistachio mixture before serving.

Cooks Note: Many plain low-fat yoghurts on sale are unpleasantly acidic, but choosing one made from bio cultures will ensure it has a mild clean taste. You can certainly use fresh mango in this recipe if you prefer, but for best results it needs to be very ripe. If using fresh mango, thin the mixture with a little milk and add up to 4 teaspoons of sugar. For a tangy variation, use buttermilk in place of the yoghurt.

FOR YOUR INTEREST: This one is not a joke but I thought you might like to know. These are the names of Lord Caitanya taken from the book "Sri Caitanya Sahasra Nama Stotra", i.e. "A Thousand Names of Lord Caitanya" by Srila Kavi Karnapura (as translated by HG Kusakratha Prabhu from the Krsna Institute)...

 Once, when Radharani and Her girlfriends were at Radha-kunda, one of Radharani’s pet parrots informed Her of a great sacrifice being conducted at Govinda-kunda.  Taking bath and dressing very nicely, Radharani and all Her girlfriends left for Govinda-kunda, carrying golden pots of milk products on their heads.

Meanwhile, Krnsa’s pet parrot informed His that Srimati Radharani was proceeding towards Govinda-kunda along with Her girlfriends.  Immediately Krsna and His cowherd boyfriends came to this sacred kunda and waited for the gopis to arrive.  When Radharani and the gopis arrived, Krsna challenged them to stop and pay a tax for using the pathway.  He accused them of being thieves for regularly using the pathway to sell their milk products but never ever paying any tax.  An argument then started between the two parties.

When the argument turned erotic by Krsna’s clever use of words, Radharani warned Him to stay away and not even dare to touch Her, otherwise the milk products She was carrying for the sacrifice would become contaminated.  A cuckoo sitting in a nearby tree spoke to Krsna and advised Him to simply speak nice words to this very proud girl and just take the tax.  Krsna then told the gopis to wait a moment while His assistants calculated the tax amount.  Krsna then informed Radharani that each of Her girlfriends must give a handful of diamonds as tax.  Krsna told Radharani that She should have to pay an extra tax for all the beautiful parts of Her body.

Hearing these words of Krsna Radharani became angry and started to walk away, but Krsna forcibly stopped Her.  He told Radharani that She could go to the sacrifice and on the way back pay the tax. The only condition was that Lalita would have to stay behind as a hostage just to ensure that the gopis returned.  On hearing this, Lalita became angry and told the other gopis to call Mother Yasoda, the brahmanas at the sacrifice, as well as Radharani’s mother-in-law Jatila.

At that moment, Radharani’s close companion Nandimukhi arrived on the spot and proposed a solution to the problem.  She told Krsna that He should immediately release Radharani and the gopis, otherwise their reputation as chaste and saintly girls would be ruined.  Nandimukhi then assured Krsna that Radharani and the gopis would return to the grove on the banks of this same kunda the next day to pay the tax in full.  Because Radharani and the gopis promised to return (nivartana) to this kunda and pay the tax (dana), this place became famous as Dana-nirvartana-kunda.  However, the gopis were feeling very angry at Krsna for the way He had obstructed Radharani on her way to the sacrifice at Govinda-kunda, so they decided to teach Him a lesson.

The next day Lalita and Visakha and hundreds of gopis hid themselves all around the kunda where Krsna was going to come and collect the tax payment.  When Krsna arrived with a few cowherd boys the gopis pounced on them, gave them a good thrashing, tied them up to a tree and humiliated them in various ways.  Lalita then demanded that Krsna pay a tax to Srimati Radharani, the queen of Vrndavana, because His cows were eating the grass of Her forests.  Lalita then brought Radharani and forced Krsna to bow down to Her lotus feet, ask forgiveness and accept Her as the queen of Vrndavana.

On a beautiful summer's day, a father and his eight-year-old son were lying on the grass by the riverbank, looking up at the sky and watching the wisps of cloud float gently overhead.

After a few minutes of silence, the boy turned to his father and said: 'Father, why are we here?'

'That's a good question, son. I think we're here to enjoy days such as this, to enjoy associating together like this, to experience nature in all its glory, the vastness of the sky, the beauty of the trees, the song of the birds, the rippling flow of the water. We're here to understand who we are, and to learn to love God, and by doing that help make the world a better place, to pass on our wisdom to future generations who will hopefully profit from our achievements and learn from our mistakes.

We're here to celebrate the small triumphs of life - passing your school exams, the birth of a new member of the family, promotion at work, a win for the home team. And we're here to comfort those dearest to us in times of distress, to provide kindness and compassion, support and strength, to let them know that, no matter how bad a situation may seem, they are not alone.

5) Mrs.IreneGraham of Thorpe Avenue, Boscombe, delighted the audience with her reminiscence of the German prisoner of war who was sent each week to do her garden. He was repatriated at the end of 1945, she recalled. "He'd always seemed a nice friendly chap, but when the crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946, they spelt out 'HeilHitler.'"
