"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

Total Solar Eclipse of 2006 March 29

On Wednesday, 2006 March 29, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Brazil and extends across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia where it ends at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia.

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEcat/SEdecade2001.html

http://riemann.usno.navy.mil/AA/data/docs/UpcomingEclipses.html

Not visible in Australia and New Zealand due to the Sun's not being visible at night for us - still the effects can be there. Details for the eclipse are below. Bear in mind that we in the southern hemisphere of Australasia are 10 or 12 hours ahead of the eclipse so our time would be from 20:36 - 23:48 on the Wednesday evening of the 29th March but as its a Solar eclipse the Sun isn't visible at night for us, still it is advisable for pregnant women not to cut or sew items.

The year's first solar eclipse occurs on Wednesday, March 29. A total eclipse will be visible from within a narrow corridor, which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in Brazil and extends across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia, where it ends at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia (Figure 2 and Figure 3).

The central eclipse track begins in eastern Brazil, where the Moon's umbral shadow first touches down on Earth at 08:36 UT. Along the sunrise terminator, the duration is 1 minute 53 seconds from the center of the 129-kilometre wide path. Traveling over 9 km/s, the umbra quickly leaves Brazil and races across the Atlantic Ocean (with no landfall) for the next half hour. After crossing the equator, the Moon's shadow enters the Gulf of Guinea and encounters the coast of Ghana at 09:08 UT. The Sun stands 44° above the eastern horizon during the 3 minute 24 second total phase. The path width has expanded to 184 kilometres while the shadow's ground speed has decreased to 0.958 km/s. Located about 50 kilometres south of the central line, the 1.7 million inhabitants of Ghana's capital city Accra can expect a total eclipse lasting 2 minute 58 seconds (09:11 UT).

Moving inland the umbra enters Togo at 09:14 UT. Unfortunately, the capital city Lome lies just outside the southern limit so its inhabitants will only witness a grazing partial eclipse. Two minutes later, the leading edge of the umbra reaches Benin whose capital Porto-Novo experiences a deep partial eclipse of magnitude 0.985. Continuing northeast, the shadow's axis enters Nigeria at 09:21 UT. At this time, the central duration has increased to 3 minutes 40 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 52°, the path of totality is 188 kilometres wide and the velocity is 0.818 km/s. Since Lagos is situated about 120 kilometres outside the umbra's southern limit, its population of over eight million will witness a partial eclipse of magnitude 0.968.

The umbra's axis takes about sixteen minutes to cross western Nigeria before entering Niger at 09:37 UT. The central duration is 3 minutes 54 seconds as the umbra's velocity continues to decrease (0.734 km/s). During the next hour, the shadow traverses some of the most remote and desolate deserts on the planet. When the umbra reaches northern Niger (10:05 UT), it briefly enters extreme northwestern Chad before crossing into southern Libya.

The instant of greatest eclipse[1] occurs at 10:11:18 UT when the axis of the Moon's shadow passes closest to the center of Earth (gamma[2] = +0.384). Totality reaches its maximum duration of 4 minutes 7 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 67°, the path width is 184 kilometres and the umbra's velocity is 0.697 km/s. Continuing on a northeastern course, the umbra crosses central Libya and reaches the Mediterranean coast at 10:40 UT. Northwestern Egypt also lies within the umbral path where the central duration is 3 minutes 58 seconds.

Passing directly between Crete and Cyprus, the track reaches the southern coast of Turkey at 10:54 UT. With a population of nearly 3/4 million people, Antalya lies 50 kilometres northwest of the central line. The coastal city's inhabitants are positioned for a total eclipse lasting 3 minutes 11 seconds while observers on the central line receive an additional 35 seconds of totality. Konya is 25 kilometres from path center and experiences a 3 minute 36 second total phase beginning at 10:58 UT. Crossing mountainous regions of central Turkey, the Moon's shadow intersects the path of the 1999 Aug 11 total eclipse. A quarter million people in Sivas have the opportunity of witnessing a second total eclipse from their homes in less than seven years.

At 11:10 UT, the shadow axis reaches the Black Sea along the northern coast of Turkey. The central duration is 3 minutes 30 seconds, the Sun's altitude is 47°, the path width is 165 kilometres and the umbra's velocity is 0.996 km/s. Six minutes later, the umbra encounters the western shore of Georgia. Moving inland, the track crosses the Caucasus Mountains, which form the highest mountain chain of Europe. Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, is outside the path and experiences a magnitude 0.949 partial eclipse at 11:19 UT. As the shadow proceeds into Russia, it engulfs the northern end of the Caspian Sea and crosses into Kazakhstan. At 11:30 UT, the late afternoon Sun's altitude is 32°, the central line duration is 2 minutes 57 seconds and the umbral velocity is 1.508 km/s and increasing.

In the remaining seventeen minutes, the shadow rapidly accelerates across central Asia while the duration dwindles. It traverses northern Kazakhstan and briefly re-enters Russia before lifting off Earth's surface at sunset along Mongolia's northern border at 11:48 UT. Over the course of 3 hours and 12 minutes, the Moon's umbra travels along a path approximately 14,500 kilometres long and covers 0.41% of Earth's surface area. Path coordinates and central line circumstances are presented in Table 1.

Local circumstances for a number of cities within the zone of partial eclipse are given in Table 2. All times are given in Universal Time. The Sun's altitude and azimuth, the eclipse magnitude[3] and obscuration[4] are all given at the instant of maximum eclipse. Additional maps, tables, and prediction details are available at NASA's 2006 total solar eclipse web site:

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEmono/TSE2006/TSE2006.html

This is the 29th eclipse of Saros series 139. The series began with 7 partial eclipses, the first of which was on 1501 May 17. Quite remarkably, the first dozen central eclipses of Saros 139 were all hybrid with the duration of totality steadily increasing during each successive event. The first total eclipse occurred on 1843 Dec 21. The series continues to produce total eclipses which culminates with an extraordinarily long total eclipse of 2186 July 16. The 7 minute 29 second duration falls just 3 seconds short of the theoretical maximum [Meeus, 2005]. The last central eclipse of Saros 139 occurs on 2601 Mar 26 with a 36 second duration. The final nine eclipses are all partial events visible from the Southern Hemisphere. The series ends with the partial eclipse of 2763 Jul 03. Complete details for Saros 139 may be found at:

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEsaros/SEsaros139.html

.....amd some words of wisdom from Shyamasundara prabhu ACBSP:

Attached is a diagram in png format of the path for the upcoming total solar eclipse of March 29.

The red kine indicates where the eclipse will be seen as total, as you move away from that line it will be less than total the further you move away.

As can be seen it covers a large part of the world and will be seen in most of Europe, Africa, and a large part of Asia, including part of India.

The following link http://tinyurl.com/s85j8 shows a movable graphic that  shows exactly where the eclipse will be seen.

In India only a part of teh Sun will be covered. But places like Kazhakstan will see a total eclipse. With Libiya having the maximum eclipse.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                                 TEXT 21

                        bahya-sparsesv asaktatma
                        vindaty atmani yat sukham
                         sa brahma-yoga-yuktatma
                          sukham aksayam asnute

   WORD FOR WORD

bahya-sparsesu--in external sense pleasure; asakta-atma--one who is
   not attached; vindati--enjoys; atmani--in the self; yat--that
   which; sukham--happiness; sah--he; brahma-yoga--by concentration in
   Brahman; yukta-atma--self-connected; sukham--happiness;
   aksayam--unlimited; asnute--enjoys.

                               TRANSLATION

Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure
but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way
the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he
   concentrates on the Supreme.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

Sri Yamunacarya, a great devotee in Krsna consciousness, said:

                 yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde
               nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit
                 tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
               bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"Since I have been engaged in the transcendental loving service of
Krsna, realizing ever-new pleasure in Him, whenever I think of sex
pleasure I spit at the thought, and my lips curl with distaste." A
person in brahma-yoga, or Krsna consciousness, is so absorbed in
the loving service of the Lord that he loses his taste for material
sense pleasure altogether. The highest pleasure in terms of matter
is sex pleasure. The whole world is moving under its spell, and a
materialist cannot work at all without this motivation. But a
person engaged in Krsna consciousness can work with greater vigor
without sex pleasure, which he avoids. That is the test in
spiritual realization. Spiritual realization and sex pleasure go
ill together. A Krsna conscious person is not attracted to any kind
of sense pleasure, due to his being a liberated soul.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

January 5th, 1976

Sri G. Gopala Reddy, the president of the local Rotary Club, also accompanied Srila Prabhupada on the morning walk. He is the secretary of a committee that Mahamsa Swami has formed for the new temple. The committee has been very active in making new ISKCON life members and obtaining pledges for construction work. Prabhupada was happy to see him and thanked him for his efforts. Upon noticing a colony of bhangis, or "untouchables," Mr. Reddy mentioned that the government was distributing land to them. He asked whether ISKCON was engaged in any sort of social welfare work, because many people have asked him what our Society did to benefit others.

Prabhupada replied by asking him what he considered the best social welfare.

When Mr. Reddy said serving the poor and the natives, Prabhupada told him, "Everyone is poor. Who is rich? First of all find out: Who is rich?" Srila Prabhupada went on to explain how everyone is poor because each of us must suffer disease, old age, and death. Adjustment of a person's material condition can be done by anyone, but ISKCON was established for a different purpose. "These things are being done by so many other people, and we are doing something which is ultimate. The hospital gives some medicine when there is some disease, but that does not mean there will be no disease. Can they guarantee that, 'I give you this medicine -- no more disease?' We are giving that medicine -- that no more disease. That is the best social work. As soon as you give up this body -- tyaktva deham punar janma naiti -- you'll have no more birth. And if you have no more birth, there will be no more death. And if you have no more birth, then there will be no more disease. This is our prescription. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti. Not that he is finished; he goes back to home, back to Godhead. This is our program."

On the way back to the house a companion of Mr. Reddy asked Srila Prabhupada how to meditate. Although most people in India are familiar with the concept of mediation, or have even practiced some form of it themselves, the actual purpose of meditation is rarely understood. The man's lack of knowledge became apparent when he explained that he thought the goal of meditation was to make the mind silent.

Prabhupada immediately corrected him, saying that it is not possible to silence the mind. He recounted a recent Back to Godhead article where a woman disciple had analyzed the fallacy of the idea. Prabhupada had greatly enjoyed the article in which the girl described how she had read in a book that meditation means "to free the mind of all thoughts." So she considered, "How can I be without thoughts? I will think of being 'without thoughts,' and that is a thought." Therefore she concluded it was bogus, and she threw away the meditation book.

Prabhupada said the point is to think of God. This alone is the real goal of meditation -- there is nothing higher. If one is a rascal and has nothing beneficial to say, then it is good if he is silent. Otherwise the Bhagavad-gita never advises silent meditation. Krsna says, satatam kirta yanto mam. He never said that 'You become silent.' Where is? Can you show me any verse in theBhagavad-gita? Can you show me any verse where Krsna has advised that you become silent? Or the mind is vacant? Where are these things?

"Man-mana bhava mad-bhakto: 'The mind should be absorbed in My thought,' man-mana. That is recommended. Where does He say that 'Make your mind vacant and think of nonsense'? He never says. And where does He say that you become silent? He never says. Ya idam paramam guhyam mad-bhaktesv abhidhasyati; na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya-krttamah [Bg. 18.68-69]: 'Anyone who speaks about this Bhagavad-gita, he is my dearmost friend,' He said. So why one should be silent? Our ultimate aim is how to become dearmost to Krsna, and He never says that 'You become silent.' Rather, He recommends that 'You always be engaged in glorifying Me.' Where is the 'silent'? These are all manufactured by these rascals. Meditation and silence, these are not recommended in the Bhagavad-gita."

After the morning walk the sannyasis have been coming into Prabhupada's room for a few minutes, eager for as much association with him as they can get. As he relaxed behind his desk waiting for breakfast he told them our preaching will go on only if we have spiritual strength. "We may have external strength," he said, "but success will only come if we have spiritual strength. Preaching programs will work only if there is purity." Citing the example of one of his leading Godbrothers in the Gaudiya Matha, he pointed out that he had all kinds of material facility -- money, mathas, etc. But what had he done for spreading Krsna consciousness? He explained that simply amassing material wealth will not bring spiritual success, nor does it signify success. He gave the example of milk touched by a serpent: It looks like milk, but it is spoiled.

"How do we keep our spiritual strength?" Prabhupada asked. We can keep our spiritual strength by being very strict Vaisnavas, he told us: by strictly following the principles and not giving any consideration whatsoever to maya's allurements. Maya is always trying to weaken us, he said, but if we think only of Krsna we will have spiritual strength; if we think of something else then we will have no transcendental potency. As always, Srila Prabhupada emphasized that we must remain strictly regulated and chant all our rounds every day.

Prabhupada: That is the first education, first instruction in the Bhagavad-gita, beginning of Bhagavad-gita-dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara, tatha dehantara-praptih [Bg. 2.13]. Unless one understands that "There is change of body and I am spirit soul within this body," he remains a cat and dog, and that's all. Dehatma-buddhih. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke sa eva go-kharah [SB 10.84.13]. So we are keeping this civilization -- animals. How there can be peace? You cannot make several dogs, bring them together as nation, and they will live peacefully. It is not possible that "You all dogs come here and feel nationally and be peaceful." Will the dogs will be able to do that? Because you are dog, it is not possible.

Dr. Patel: (Hindi) They fight among themselves for nothing.

Prabhupada: Yes. So they are keeping them cats and dogs by education, culture, and they want to be happy. How it is possible? First of all let them come to the standard of human being. Then there is question of peace and happiness. They are kept as cats and dogs, and how there can be peace? You cannot make any peace in the dog society. That is not possible. Hare Krsna. So that consciousness can come only when one is spiritually educated. If he is simply engaged for satisfying the senses, material, then he remains a cat and dog. You cannot expect any peace.

Dr. Patel: I think the greatest damage done to this civilization of Aryans of India was by MacCauley, who introduced the British system of education.

Prabhupada: But why you accepted that? (laughter) Why you accepted? Then why don't you accept? You should have refused.

Dr. Patel: Well, we were not there to refuse. We came afterwards. Our forefathers gave us...

Prabhupada: No, you can... Just like they are reforming. Their forefathers were drunkards, woman-hunters, (laughter) and they are reformed, the great-grandchildren. And we old men, we cannot do that.

Dr. Patel: I talk of MacCauley...

Prabhupada: MacCauley may mislead you. Why you should believe?

Dr. Patel: He misled our forefathers.

Prabhupada: No, why you should be misled?

Dr. Patel: Now we are going to lead them. Are you not leading them?

Prabhupada: Yes. Your forefathers might have been misled, but why you will commit the same mistake again?

Dr. Patel: Now we have improved upon the mistake and we are leading them, and we will lead them.

Prabhupada: No, that is not the fact. These boys, European, American boys, they were misled from the very beginning of their life, but how they are improving in spiritual consciousness? The thing is we are not prepared to take up our own culture. That is...

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

This conception of life is the greatest barrier for advancing in spiritual consciousness.
Therefore the Vedic  civilization is so planned that one has to give up this rascal "own men" conception.

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." thanx again Shyam'

Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Yours faithfully,

Holi Festival Celebrated Across India and the Diaspora

http://www.ibnlive.com/article.php?id=6804&section_id=3&pagenum=0

NEW DELHI, INDIA, March 15, 2006: It's a rainbow of colors across the country as India gets draped in the multi-coloured hues of Holi even though an unseasonal weather threatens to play spoilsport in North India. The festival of colors also marked the end of winter and arrival of spring. From Holi heartland Vrindavan and Varanasi to tinsel town Mumbai to Anandpur Sahib and up to the frontiers, a jubilant nation is getting a new high as throngs of crowds are getting into festive gears, singing "Holi hai bhai Holi hai, bura na mano Holi hai."

Varanasi celebrated Holi on a muted tone. The city showed much resilience and spirit to bounce back from last week's terror attacks and get draped in myriads colors. The festivities began on a sombre note in the morning but picked up as the day progressed. People danced and sang their way to the ghats early morning on Wednesday to offer prayers and play Holi.

At Vrindavan, it has been a full blast. A huge procession of people -- all drenched in colors -- converted the whole city into a sea of colors as Brijwasis sang and danced through the streets and thoroughfares and at temples and ghats, celebrating a festival that is said to have born in these very lands many centuries back. In the nation's frontiers, the sentinels of the border are celebrating in high spirit far away from their families. There is nothing that can dampen the Holi spirit among the jawans. While the very tradition of Holi usually revolves around Lord Krishna, in Karnataka, it's Lord Siva who burns away the evil. In Bihar, singing, dancing and splashes of colors marked Holi. Bihari Holi is more famous for latkas and jhatkas. And add to that Bhojpuri Holi songs, it becomes an automatic blast.

In Gujarat, over one million devotees from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh visited the famous Ranchhodji Temple at Dakor town, about 45 km from Vadodra, and offered prayers on the occasion of Holi. About 1,500 policemen were deployed at 28 points in the town for regulating the flow of devotees in the wake of terrorists attack at Varanasi. Most parts of eastern India, including West Bengali marked Holi on Tuesday and Santiniketan came alive with Basantotsav (Spring festival) made famous by Nobel Laureate abindranath Tagore. Ashramites in Tagore's abode of peace revved up Holi spirits with the customary dawn rendition of "Khol dwar khol, laglo je dol" ("Open the door, spring's here") as students, and teachers of Visva-Bharati took out the procession on the main thoroughfare of the university. At Delhi's Tihar Jail, mirthful songs rang through the air and there were color splashes all around as the prisoners celebrated Holi. Around 2,000 inmates of the prison, the largest jail complex in Asia, took part in celebrating the festival of colors, with the Director General R. P. Singh also joining in the celebrations. "They congregated and celebrated Holi and there was song and dance. This is for the first time that such a grand celebration was organized in the jail," said Sunil Kumar, the Law Officer of the jail. The inmates sang songs in Hindi and Bhojpuri and danced to the tune of the traditional Holi songs.

Reconstruct Hare Krishna temple in Russia: BJP

Saturday, 18 March , 2006, 17:29

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party today asked Government to seek Russian government’s intervention to ensure reconstruction of a demolished Hare Krishna temple in Moscow.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour Lok Sabha, BPJ’s Deputy Leader V K Malhotra said a new temple should be allowed to be constructed since the existing one was demolished. The design for the new temple has also been approved, he said.

Claiming that the Mayor of London and some influential bodies have supported the reconstruction of the temple, Malhotra said an orthodox group in Russia was opposing it.

Introduction

Did you know that:
Certain kinds of music are energizing for your children's minds and can help them learn much faster, and even help them digest their food better. Other types of music actually drain energy from your children's brains and bodies and can affect their hormone levels (this is especially a problem with teens).

Certain frequencies of sound are beneficial to your children's bodies and are more often present in certain instruments and in works by certain composers.

There are certain kinds of music that can help in your home with everything from household chores to soothing a crying baby, enhancing homework, creative writing, math - you name it!

Music affects cell protoplasm and even chromosomes. Consider what you are passing on to your children and their children.

Listening to certain types of music has been shown to temporarily increase students' IQ scores.

There is a moral component of music that is totally separate and independent of any lyrics and significantly impacts your children.

Educators and researchers are finding direct relationships between music and television habits and the mental, verbal and behavioral development of our children.

.....our conclusion therefore is to chant Hare Krishna and your life will be sublime.

Devour the Earth
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/3121/devour.html

Discover the facts the meat industry would like to hide.

"An alien observing earth might conclude that cattle is the dominant animal species in our biosphere."
-David Hamilton Wright, Biologist

Water pollution and global warming, rainforest destruction and collapsing oceans, these are just some of the environmental perils which threaten our children and which rip through the raw beauty of the natural world. Read on, and you will discover that meat carries much of the blame. Our Devour the Earth campaign will feed you the facts the meat industry has tried to hide. It will expose the damage and the suffering which can be linked to livestock farming, it will offer you a healthy sustainable vegetarian alternative.

It takes 10 kilos of vegetable protein to produce just 1 kilo of meat - the most wasteful form of food production ever devised. As 38 per cent of the world's grain is fed to animals, 15 million children die of hunger every year in the developing world. Many of the reasons for this hunger are political but to waste valuable land to feed animals and not people has to be madness.

As the animals eat, nature takes its course and as a result, billions of tons of slurry and gas are produced. Two hundred times more polluting than human waste, slurry is responsible for several thousand serious water pollution incidents in the UK every year. The Netherlands has so many slurry-producing animals that they have been declared a 'manure surplus region' and have actually started shipping their waste to the developing world for disposal. In this crazy system, the poor feed our animals with their grain and then have to dispose of the faeces as we eat the meat.

Ruminant livestock like sheep and cows also damage the atmosphere. Their flatulence results in the release of 80 million tons of methane every year. In the UK the single largest source of this powerful global warming gas is livestock.

Clearing forests for cattle also adds to the greenhouse effect. In Latin America, an area of rainforests the size of Britain is destroyed every year, mostly for cattle. As the ranchers slash and burn the trees they release huge amounts of carbon dioxide - some of their smoke cloude have been visible from space! Since 1970, the cattlemen have destroyed 20 million hectares of rainforest and produced 1.4 billion tons of carbon dioxide. Every day 50 species of tropical fauna or flora become extinct as the destruction continues.

Our terror has spread to the oceans, where huge trawlers smash through the oceans' eco-systems. Overfishing has sent nine of the world's 17 fisheries into collapse as the other fisheries strain under the relentless onslaught of a fishing industry which doesn't even pay its way - the world spends US$124 billion every year to catch just US$70 billion of fish.

It doesn't have to be this way.

The land is saturated with pesticides and fertilisers to produce feed for animals, not people, and yet a country like Britain would use just 30 per cent of its agricultural land if we were all vegetarian. By becoming vegetarian, you can join millions of others who have had enough of the pollution, the cruelty and the destruction. Vegetarian food is healthier, safer and less costly to our small, blue world. It is also much kinder to animals.

Becoming a vegetarian and supporting the work of organizations such as The Vegetarian Society could make a real difference for the environment - you have the choice.

"Devour the Earth" is a video narrated by Paul McCartney. It can be ordered from The Vegetarian Society.

The Environmental Impact of Meat
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/3121/e_impact.html

By: Steve Connor

When an engine is about to blow, you'll get some kind of warning. When a system is straining against itself, on the verge of collapse, pushed too far, cracks will start to show.

And so it is with our planet. New afflictions arrive to dwarf the old ones, and we discover that instead of everlasting life and happiness, our technological advances seem merely to have brought us cancers, contaminants and heart disease. Transformed from elaborate ecosystems into shadowy husks our oceans and forests have been laid waste as we bravely exploit where no 'man' has exploited before. We ditch our waste into the rivers and then wonder why we have to shell out on water filters. We blow some holes in the sky and seem surprised that we need sunblock, year-round.

Some of the damage cannot be undone. The extinction of 50 different species of plants and animals a day in a tropical rainforest is pretty much irrevocable, but changes can be made now to ensure that the future is sustainable. This article is about what you can do.

A fair amount of environmental destruction can be linked to the way we pattern our lives. From car use to energy consumption there are ways of living which place more or less of a burden on this poor old planet of ours.

A vegetarian diet is well known for its health benefits. Radically lower heart disease and cancer levels have been discovered in vegetarians, and 95 per cent of food poisoning cases occur in animal foods. Studies have shown that cutting back on the meat in your diet can cut premature mortality by up to 20 per cent and that a vegetarian diet can fight osteoporosis and diabetes. The fact that a vegetarian diet may be a safer bet for our environmental future may, however, have escaped you until now.

The livestock industry is one of the biggest. In the UK alone we have 12 million cows, 44 million sheep and 7.4 million pigs. In battery cages and broiler sheds we also have several hundred million chickens and turkeys. 77 per cent of our land is used for agriculture, of which up to 85 per cent is used to produce meat. Where we don't graze livestock, we grow crops to feed to livestock. Agriculture is big business and yet this land-hungry industry contributes only 1.5 per cent of our gross domestic product.

These huge crowds of animals do more than occupy the land - they pollute it too. Manure, slurry and sewage sludge, full of the heavy metals added to feed, is spread upon the land every day. In the Netherlands they have found themselves with too much shit for too little land, and have declared the country a 'manure surplus region'. The muck they can spread gives off ammonia - a major cause of acid rain - while the remainder is shipped off and dumped on the developing world. Here in the UK things are almost as bad. The accumulation of heavy metals in the soil is reaching serious proportions, and every year between 2,000 and 4,000 serious water pollution incidents can be linked directly to industrial farming.

The unwitting farm animals pollute the air too. Muck spreading and slurry storage cause a good deal of discomfort for those caught 'down wind' from Old MacDonald's factory farm. Over 3,500 complaints are received every year about 'farm smells'.

After carbon dioxide, methane is the second most common greenhouse gas, and increasing levels of this gas in the atmosphere are worrying experts as it has 11 times the global warming capacity of carbon dioxide. Cows belch and burp and incredible 60 litres of methane every day, and when added to the flatulent excesses of other farm animals, they represent the single largest source of methane in the UK, belching and farting a massive 26 per cent of all emissions.

Meat production is a smelly, polluting business, but it doesn't end there. More land needed for more cattle means the continued destruction of otherwise valuable wildlife habitats. Though we've long since lost most of our forest here in Britain, we still have our hedgerows, yet over 52,000km of hedgerow have been lost since 1984 through agricultural expansion. Beyond our shores, an area of tropical rainforest the size of England is destroyed every year, in regions like South America the majority is cleared for cattle ranching, even though the soil is virtually useless once the forests have gone. For the four or five short years that the soil will sustain pasture, the ranchers will only manage to stock their range with one head of cattle per hectare.

The meat or fish on our plates is doing more than just damaging our land and forests. With nets large enough to capture 12 Boeing 747 jets and radar planes to track shoals of fish, huge factory trawlers are decimating the last few remaining stocks of fish. Of the world's 22 major fisheries all but two have reached their limits and 7 are in serious decline. In the North Sea we take out half of all the fish stocks every year, dragging thousands of dolphins, whales and sea birds with them.

In our rivers and estuaries, fish producers have adopted the techniques of the factory farm, and are caging tens of thousands of salmon and trout in hideously cramped conditions. Packed in together, the fish are an ideal breeding ground for disease and so pesticides and antibiotics have to be added to the water, some of which have been linked to cancer in humans.

These large, static fish populations have more than just cages in common with the factory farm. Pollution from sewage is just as worrying on fish farms, a single ton of trout can create a pollution load equivalent to the untreated sewage of 100-200 people.

There is, of course, an alternative. A vegetarian diet is not just better for you and the 900 animals you would normally eat during the course of your lifetime. Vegetarians can exist on around 30 per cent of the agricultural land used to produce meat. Feeding perfectly good crops to animals is an inefficient and short sighted way of producing protein - 10kg of vegetable protein to produce just one kg of meat! Using less land, more sensibly could mean fewer pesticides and fertilisers and more land available for wildlife. The developing world could stop shipping us valuable grain for our livestock, and wouldn't have to deal with the shit they produce.

A vegetarian diet will cut out the antibiotics, growth promoters and chemicals found in meat, and would go a long way to reducing the pollutants in our drinking water. You'll be healthier almost immediately, and you'll be making sure that your little piece of the planet stretches just that little bit further.

Ancient City Discovered in Bangladesh Related to Indus Valley Civilization

sanatanadharma2002.blogspot.com

original text from http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20060315/sc_nm/bangladesh_citadel_dc_1

WARI, BANGLADESH, March 15, 2006: Archaeologists in Bangladesh say they have uncovered part of a fortified citadel dating back to 450 B.C. that could have been a stopping off point along an ancient trade route. So far, a moat round the citadel has been uncovered along with parts of an ancient road at Wari, 85 km (53 miles) northeast of the capital Dhaka. "The citadel and a raft of artifacts may help redefine history of India," said Sufi Mostafizur Rahman, head of the department of archaeology at Jahangirnagar University, near Dhaka. "The well-planned road with even manholes proves that the citadel was managed by a very efficient administration," Mostafizur added. "I am confident further excavation will lead us to residue of a palace," he said. Archaeologists have been excavating the ancient roads and unearthing artifacts for several years. Tests by a Dutch university revealed the objects dated to around 450 B.C.

Artefacts found in the 600 x 600 meter (1,800 x 1,800 ft) include metal coins, metallic chisels, terracotta missiles, rouletted and knobbed pottery, stone hammers and bangles. Ornaments suggested Buddhism dominated life in the urban centers. Mostafizur said the citadel was believed to be a part of Harappan civilization and a prime trade center might have flourished there, possibly serving as a link between contemporary South Asian and Roman civilizations. The Harappan civilization flourished in the Indus and Ganges valleys between 2,700 B.C. to 700 B.C. Archaeologists hope the citadel and surrounding area yield many more surprises. In Wari and the nearby Batteswar village there are 47 raised areas and archaeologists are planning to excavate all of these as well.

The story of a poor man

In Caitanya Caritamrta (Madhya 20.127-136), Caitanya Mahaprabhu relates an allegorical story to explain the different stages of our relationship to God.

The story of a poor man
***********************
There was once a man who suffered a lot because of his poverty. In reality he was the son of a famous and rich father. Unfortunately, since the father had died in a distant place, the son did not know that he had left him a huge treasure. Consequently he was spending his life in abject poverty and misery.

One day a learned astrologer visited the poor man and seeing his distressed condition questioned him. 'Why are you unhappy? Your father was very wealthy, but he did not disclose his wealth to you because he died elsewhere.' The astrologer then informed him of the means to acquire the wealth. He said, 'the treasure is in this place, but you have to approach it very carefully. If you dig from the southern side the wasps and drones will rise and sting you. On the western there is a ghost that will create much disturbance for you. On the northern side there is big black snake that will devour you. However if you approach from the eastern side, then by removing only a little amount of dirt, the treasure will be revealed to you.'

Following the instructions of the astrologer, the poor man was then able to locate and retrieve the treasure. After having access to the fabulous treasure of his father, he then lived a life full of happiness.

The poor man and us
*******************
The poor man in this allegorical story is us, the living entities in the material world, who have forgotten our real relationship to God, our eternal father. Just as the words of the astrologer gave the son knowledge about his father, the Vedic scriptures reveal to us the fact that we all have a loving father Krishna. By the words of the astrologer the poor man’ s connection with the treasure was established. This stage is called ‘sambandha’.

However that in itself was not enough. Therefore the astrologer had to inform him of the means to locate and retrieve the treasure. Similarly, a sincere person hears from a qualified spiritual master the process of re-establishing his relationship with God and then faithfully acts on it, by executing devotional service. This stage is called ‘abhidheya’. Finally, carefully avoiding the three chief distractions (furtive activity, speculative knowledge and yogic mysticism) and concentrating on the path of pure devotional service, one eventually gets the treasure of pure love of Godhead. This is called ‘prayojana’.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu has instructed any one sincere about making spiritual advancements to understand these three basic truths of life. First, that each and every one of us has an eternal relationship with God (sambandha).

Second, that we must all endeavor to re-establish this relationship (abhidheya). Finally that the goal of our life is to live in our constitutional relationship with the Lord (prayojana).

Ten supporting principles
*************************
These three truths are supported on ten basic principles that guide an aspiring devotee from the initial stage of forgetfulness to the final stage of pure love of Godhead. Of these ten principles, the first forms the basis or the foundation of the remaining nine principles.

The first principle states that in order to ascertain the truth one must accept the authority of the Vedic scriptures. Everything in existence falls into the category of being conceivable (by our material senses) or inconceivable (beyond our senses). Information regarding the spiritual realm is inconceivable and therefore must be accepted on the basis of ‘sabda’ or the words of the Vedic scriptures. These scriptures revealed by a bona-fide spiritual master is called ‘amnaya’ and forms the basis of any and all spiritual advancement.

Of the remaining nine principles, the first seven deal with sambandha (our relationship with Krishna). The next deals with abhidheya (how to re-establish) and the final one deals with prayojana (the ultimate goal of life). All these principles can only be realized by the media of ‘amnaya’ or the first principle.

Principles of sambandha
***********************
The seven principles that explain sambandha are divided into three categories. The first category which contains the first three principles explain the position of Sri Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The second category which contains the next two principles talk about the conditioned living entity. The third category which contains the remaining two principles talk about the relationship of Krishna with the living entity. Let us now briefly examine them.

1.The Supreme Brahman, Sri Hari, is the only worshippable Lord, Who is also known as Krishna.
2.Krishna is full of innumerable, inconceivable potencies. By these potencies He maintains the spiritual world, the material world and all the living entities.
3.Krishna is full of mellows or rasas. These mellows are the force driving everyone to seek pleasure, either in the Lord or in one’s own self.
4.The jiva-atma (living entity) is qualitatively the same as the Lord, but quantitatively infinitesimal, while the Lord is infinite. Thus they have the same independence as the Lord has, but in a negligible amount. Those jivas that use their independence to serve the Lord are called nitya-siddhas (eternally liberated) and those that use it to serve their own sense are called nitya-baddhas (eternally conditioned).
5.The nitya-baddha accept the shelter of Maya (the illusory energy of the Lord) and are bound to the material time by the blind wheel of fruitive activity (karma). Thus they constantly migrate through one of the millions species of life based on their desires and activities.
6.The Lord is related to all the jivas by an inconceivable simultaneous oneness and difference. This acintya-bheda-abheda tattva manifests in the scriptures, which is why the scriptures speak about many apparently contradictory things.
7.When the living entities spiritual intelligence is awakened by keeping firm faith in the above principles and by the mercy of Krishna, then he can clearly see the truth of the inconceivable oneness and difference. When one achieves knowledge of these seven truths, viewed by the firm faith in the scriptures as per the first principle, then he is said to have knowledge of the position of Krishna, sambandha.

Principle of abhidheya
**********************
The relationship with Krishna is re-established by performing devotional service. This is first performed as per the instructions in the scriptures and the guru. At this stage it is called sadhna-vaidhi bhakti. As one gets purified by this process, the bhakti also becomes spontaneous. It is now performed by following the footsteps of the liberated devotees of the Lord. This is called sadhna-ragunaga bhakti. Vaidhi bhakti starts from sraddha (some faith) and goes to ruci (taste) when it becomes ragunaga. Ragunaga bhakti is always forceful, this is the ninth principle.

Principle of prayojana
**********************
As per this tenth principle, the supreme goal of life is prema, or pure love of Krishna.

So, in conclusion, it is very important for each one of us to inquire into the cause of our suffering and thus begun to understand these three absolute truths which will take us all the way from a little faith in the Lord to the goal where we associate and enjoy our eternal relationships with Him.

In case of emergency (ICE) contact number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

The Animal Spirit Newsletter - Issue #2 -  4/21/03-4/27/03

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Layered Pancakes with Pesto & Mozzarella

A great supper dish - baked pancakes layered with a creamy pesto sauce and melted mozzarella.

Serves 2-4
Ingredients:
oil for greasing
8 pancakes
400ml (14fl oz) pesto sauce (see our recipe below)
300ml (½ pint) bechamel sauce (melted butter, plain flour, whisked together with warm milk to make a thick white sauce)
pinch of grated nutmeg
200g (7oz) mozzarella cheese, coarsely grated
salt and fresh ground black pepper

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. Lightly grease an ovenproof dish.

2. Place a pancake in the base of the dish.

3. Mix the pesto and bechamel sauces together. Add a little grated nutmeg.

4. Smooth some of the pesto mixture over the pancake. Sprinkle with mozzarella and season lightly.

5. Place another pancake on top with another layer of sauce, cheese and seasoning. Continue layering until you have a stack of eight pancakes.

6. Cover with greaseproof paper and bake for 20 minutes until heated through.

7. Serve hot or warm, with a salad of your choice.

3. Heat a little oil in a 18cm (7in) heavy-based frying pan, tilting the pan to spread the oil evenly.

4. Pour in just enough batter to thinly coat the base of the pan. Cook for 1-2 minutes until golden on the under side. Flip over, and cook the other side until golden.

5. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat.
That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it.
Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Laughter Therapy - its no joke:
http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/yod/march98/news.htm

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

Four Wives parable:

I went for a walk last night and my kids asked me how long I'd be gone.
I said, "The whole time."

Sardar Gurbachan Singh is appearing for his University final examination. He takes his seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration takes his shoes off and throws them out of the window. He then removes his turban and throws it away as well. His shirt, pant, socks and watch follow suit. The invigilator, alarmed, approaches him and asks what is going on. "Oye, I am only following the instructions yaar," he says, " it says here, 'Answer the following questions in BRIEF'."

Our Sardarji was filling up an application form for a job. He promptly filled the columns titled NAME,AGE,ADDRESS etc. Then he came to the column Salary Expected : He was not sure as to what to be filled there. After much thought he wrote : YES.

".....nice for you to drop in for lunch - our lunch - you're it !!!"

A Sardar was going to Chandigarh from Pune by an Air India plane. He was alloted the middle seat of one of the 3-seats array. But as soon as the sardarji got into the plane, he sat on the window side seat which was actually for an old lady. After some time the old lady came and requested the sardarji to leave the side seat. But the sardaji said: "I want to see the view from the window and shall not leave". The old lady then complained to the air hostess. The air hostess came and requested the sardarji to leave that seat. But sardarji was adament and did not leave. Then the air hostess went and told the asst capt. He also came and requested, but in vain. Finally the Captain came. He whispered something in the ears of the sardarji, and the sardarji immedietly left the side seat and returned to the middle seat. Astonished, the airhostess and the asst.capt. asked the capt. what he told to the sardarji. Capt. replied : " Nothing. I just told him that only the middle seats will go to Chandigarh. All others will go to Jallandhar."

The sign above is one of the many bilingual signs that can be found in Wales. The above is obviously in English and the bottom is in Welsh. Usually the Welsh and English mean the same thing but as I don't speak Welsh I can never be sure that they do.

It turns out that not all signs do say the same thing. The sign above says 'Look Right' in English but in Welsh says 'Look Left'!

The sign was spotted by a North Wales man on a visit to Cardiff.

No matter what goes wrong, there is always somebody who knew it would.

MONKEY, n. An arboreal animal which makes itself at home in genealogical trees.

Mahavir was dying. His wife sat at the bedside.

He looked up and said weakly, "I have something I must confess."

"There's no need to," his wife replied.

"No," he insisted, "I want to die in peace. I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!"

"I know, I know," she replied. "Now just rest and let the poison work."

My husband and I had just finished tucking our five young ones into bed one evening when we heard sobbing coming from three- year-old Billy's room.

Rushing to his side, we found him crying hysterically. He had accidentally swallowed a penny and was sure he was going to die. No amount of talking could change his mind. Desperate to calm him, my husband palmed a penny that he happened to have in his pocket and pretended to pull it from Billy's ear. Billy was delighted.

In a flash, he snatched it from my husband's hand, swallowed it and demanded cheerfully, "Do it again, Dad!"
