Welcome to the latest edition of the on-line HKSRNewsletter, and our humble attempt to render some service to the devotee community. The format of this newsletter is that of a continuous scroll, please see the table of contents where everything is hyper-linked on-line, we hope it's now easier for you all. This newsletter still goes out to way over 3008 receivers. We trust that all is well with everyone by the Mercy of the Lord. Bhagavad Gita:   Chapter 6 - Dhyana-yoga

TEXT 2
                        yam sannyasam iti prahur
                        yogam tam viddhi pandava
                        na hy asannyasta-sankalpo
                          yogi bhavati kascana

   WORD FOR WORD

   yam--what; sannyasam--renunciation; iti--thus; prahuh--they say; yogam--linking with the Supreme; tam--that; viddhi--you must know; pandava--O son of Pandu; na--never; hi--certainly; asannyasta--without giving up; sankalpah--desire for self-satisfaction; yogi--a mystic transcendentalist; bhavati--becomes; kascana--anyone.

TRANSLATION

   What is called renunciation you should know to be the same as yoga, or linking oneself with the Supreme, O son of Pandu, for one can never become a yogi unless he renounces the desire for sense gratification.

PURPORT by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:
   Real sannyasa-yoga or bhakti means that one should know his constitutional position as the living entity, and act accordingly.
   The living entity has no separate independent identity. He is the marginal energy of the Supreme. When he is entrapped by material energy, he is conditioned, and when he is Krsna conscious, or aware of the spiritual energy, then he is in his real and natural state of life. Therefore, when one is in complete knowledge, one ceases all material sense gratification, or renounces all kinds of sense gratificatory activities. This is practiced by the yogis who restrain the senses from material attachment. But a person in Krsna consciousness has no opportunity to engage his senses in anything which is not for the purpose of Krsna. Therefore, a Krsna conscious person is simultaneously a sannyasi and a yogi. The purpose of knowledge and of restraining the senses, as prescribed in the jnana and yoga processes, is automatically served in Krsna consciousness.
   If one is unable to give up the activities of his selfish nature, then jnana and yoga are of no avail. The real aim is for a living entity to give up all selfish satisfaction and to be prepared to satisfy the Supreme. A Krsna conscious person has no desire for any kind of self-enjoyment. He is always engaged for the enjoyment of the Supreme. One who has no information of the Supreme must therefore be engaged in self-satisfaction, because no one can stand on the platform of inactivity. All purposes are perfectly served by the practice of Krsna consciousness.

Just like the police are everywhere...

After chanting this morning's verse, Pradyumna read out the translation, which described how the representatives of Lord Visnu instantly appeared before the dying Ajamila, who was about to be dragged away by the agents of death.

Srila Prabhupada used an appropriate analogy to show how this was possible. "Just like the police are everywhere. As soon as you call them, from the police station they immediately inform the patrol police on the car. Immediately he comes. If there is such material arrangement within the government how much nice arrangement is there in the supreme government?"

He stressed that we should always be chanting the names of God and in that way we can be saved. It doesn't matter which name of God, because the powerful name of God and God Himself are not different. Still, the recommended practice is to chant the Hare Krsna mantra. "Always the name Narayana or Krsna, the name of the Supreme Lord, is as good as the Supreme. It is always. But in this age especially it has got special potency. That is because we are all very, very fallen souls. We cannot do anything. It is very, very difficult. Simply by bhakti, devotional service, one can become liberated from all contamination. That's a fact, especially in this age. ... So anyway if somebody thinks that this Krsna is an Indian name, 'Why shall I chant Krsna?' Well you chant any other name -- but it must be God's name. Then it will be effective. Just like immediately chanted Narayana. Not that one has to chant Krsna; Narayana will do; Govinda will do. But it must be God's name because God and God's name [are not different]. There are sahasra, one thousand Visnu-stotra. God has many names, hundreds and thousands. So any name you prefer you chant. But His names are given according to His activities. Krsna -- Krsna is the best name. Why? That Krsna means all-attractive. This name can attract everyone. This is the most perfect. Out of many names the Krsna name is mukhya, or the primary. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu has introduced Krsna name, krsna-varnam."

He told us it is Lord Caitanya's special benediction that we can chant, even without proper understanding, and still become ecstatic in love of Krsna. If we take advantage of the mercy of Lord Caitanya, then the results of our chanting will be wonderful, as they were for Ajamila. "So this is arrangement that God is there and He's everyone's father. He's everyone's friend. He's always ready. He's coming personally to canvass. He's so kind. Immediately, God has sent so many order-carriers just to see if one is inclined to come to Him. Just see: 'Here's a person, he's chanting Narayana. Come on. Take him.' Just see. 'Here this person is chanting Narayana. Oh, isn't this wonderful? He's chanting Narayana. Oh, immediately.' The Yamadutas were there. 'Who are you, disturbing him? Stop!'

"So take this chance of chanting harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam. You're always safe. The Yamadutas, the order-carriers of Yamaraja, will not be able to touch you. So take this opportunity chanting Hare Krsna. I'm very glad that you are doing -- but be very strict, sincerely chant. Your life is saved; your next life is saved. Everything is all right."

"How to Enjoy Real Bliss"

Prabhupada: Dhartarastrasya durbuddher [Bg. 1.23]. Durbuddhi, to usurp others' property is durbuddhi, mischievous. Why one should encroach upon others' property? That is not good. Tena tyaktena bhunjitha ma grdhah kasya svid dhanam [Iso mantra 1]. This is the Vedic instruction, that "You accept only what is given to you. Don't encroach upon others' property." This is peaceful. Everything belongs to Krsna. So whatever Krsna gives you as prasadam, as His favor, you accept it and be satisfied. This is the basic principle of peace in the world. But because people are not educated in that way, everyone is wanting more and more and more and more. There is no satisfaction. So that is durbuddhi. The Vedic culture is that "You be satisfied with your position." There is no question of starving in any position of life. People are trying to make economic development, but according to sastra, it is not possible to develop your economic position simply by endeavor. You are destined to have some portion mixed up with happiness and distress. That is the nature. Dharmartha-kama-moksa. These are four principles of human activities. First beginning is dharma. Dharma means to abide by the orders of the Supreme. That is dharma. So people do not know who is the Supreme and what is His order. So what kind of religion? They accept dharma as religion, faith, a superfluous faith only. But that is not dharma, religion. Dharma means to abide by the orders of the Supreme. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. That is the meaning of dharma: obedience to God. There is no conception of God, and what to speak of obedience. But this is the simple meaning of religion: obedience to God. That's all, three words. God is the supreme proprietor, God is the maintainer... Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram [Bg. 5.29]. Therefore we are maintained, we are predominated, we are servant, we should remain obedient to God. This is religion. Where is the difficulty? Unfortunately, they do not know what is God, what is His command, what is religion. They do not know. They manufacture. And because they do not know the simple process, they are called durbuddhi, not very nicely intelligent. A rascal, in other words.

In the Bhagavad-gita it is plainly said, mudha. Mudha means asses, rascal. He does not know his own interest. He is called mudha, ass. Just like ass. Ass is whole day working with tons of cloth on his back, but he does not... Not a piece of cloth belongs to him. This is ass. And he is working so hard only for a morsel of grass, which is available everywhere. But he is thinking that "This gentleman, washerman, is giving me food." This is ass. Such food can be available anywhere and everywhere, but he is thinking like that and working so hard. So karmis are like that. He will eat two capatis or four capatis, but he is working day and night. If you want to see him, he will say, "Oh, I have no time." He does not think at any time that "I am interested to eat four capatis, which can be very easily available. So why I am working so hard?" But that sense does not come. He is working, working, working, "More money, more money, more money, more money, more money." The Bhagavata says, "No, no. This is not your business." The four capatis is already destined to you; you will get, any circumstances. You don't waste your time simply under some false impression of economic development. Don't waste your time. You cannot get more, you cannot get less. That is already there. So you utilize your time for understanding Krsna. That is your business. People will not accept it. "Oh, this is a waste of time. Attending the class of Bhagavad-gita, this is waste of time. By this time I could have earned hundreds of dollars." That is their business. That is called durbuddhi, durbuddhi, not very intelligent. All mudha, asses.

Real intelligent person is he who is satisfied what Krsna has given him: "If Krsna wants, He will give me more. Let me become Krsna conscious. Let me study about Krsna. Let me chant about Krsna. Let me hear about Krsna. Let me see with my eyes Krsna, the Deity Krsna. Let me engage my hands in worshiping Krsna, in cleansing the temple, my hands. Let my legs be engaged in going to the temple." In this way all our senses should be engaged in the service of Krsna. That is our real business. Tasyaiva hetoh prayateta kovido na labhyate yad bhramatam upary adhah [SB 1.5.18]. Tasyaiva hetoh: "For that purpose only." Which purpose? Which we could not achieve after wandering the whole universe, up and down. The living entity is wandering by transmigration from one body to another up and down. Sometimes he is becoming Brahma even. Brahma, Indra, Candra. He can become. One can become. By pious activities, you can be raised to the position of Brahma, Indra, Candra, demigods, big, big demigods. And by impious activities, you can go down to become the worm of a stool. This is going on. This is called bhramatam upary adhah. Upari adhah. Adhah means down, and upari means up. So urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah [Bg. 14.18]. Who are going to upper planetary system? Sattva-sthah, those who are qualified brahmanas, strictly following the principles.

He assumes five other forms to serve Lord Krishna. He Himself helps in the pastimes of Lord Krishna, and He does the work of creation in four other forms called the catur-vyuha (four armed) forms known as Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Anirudha. He executes the orders of Lord Krishna in the work of creation, and in the form of Lord Sesa He serves Sri Krishna in various ways. In all the forms He tastes the transcendental bliss of serving Krishna. No one can approach Krishna without first getting the mercy of Baladeva.

Descent of Balarama
****************
Whenever Krishna appears in the material world, He is accompanied by His associates and paraphernalia. Five thousand years ago when Krishna descended into the material world, He was first preceded by Baladeva. Only after Baladeva give His mercy did Krishna descend, such is the intimate relationship between Krishna and Baladeva.

When Baladeva appeared as the seventh child in the womb of Devaki, she could understand that this was a divine child and this made her all the more concerned about His safety. Even Kamsa could sense His potency and he became fearful, thinking he may have been tricked by the prophecy that he will be slain only by the eight child of Devaki. At this time Krishna  instructed Yogamaya, His internal potency, to transfer the unborn child from the womb of Devaki to that of Rohini, one of the other wives of Vasudeva, who was hiding from Kamsa in the house of Nanda Maharaja in Gokul.

In this way Balarama was born in Gokul under the protection of Nanda Maharaja. Garga Muni the venerable kulguru (family priest) of the Yadu dynasty revealed to Rohini that the child she was carrying was indeed that of her husband Vasudeva. At the time of the name-giving ceremony he named the child Rama, one who gives all pleasures. Referring to the immense strength of the child, Garga Muni predicted that He will also be known as Balarama (bala meaning strength). Since He was forcibly attracted from the womb of Devaki to that of Rohini, He was also be called Sankarshana. As the son of Rohini He was known as Rohini-nandan and as the elder brother of Krishna He was also called Douji.

The form of Lord Balarama

Powerful Lord Balarama is sixteen years old, full of the luster of youth and has a fair complexion the color of crystal. He wears blue garments and a garland of forest flowers. His handsome hair is tied in a graceful topknot. Splendid earrings adorn His ears and His neck is splendidly decorated with garlands of flowers and strings of jewels. Splendid armlets and bracelets ornament Douji's graceful and very strong arms and His feet are decorated with splendid jeweled anklets.

Lord Balarama's beauty is enhanced by the earrings touching His cheeks. His face is decorated with tilaka made from musk, and His broad chest is ornamented with a garland of gunja. Balarama’s voice is very grave and His arms are very long, touching His thighs

The splendor of Lord Balarama's transcendental form eclipses many millions of glistening rising moons, and the slightest scent of His boundless strength is sufficient to destroy many armies of demons. Although He knows the supernatural power of His younger brother, Krishna, still, out of love for Him, He never leaves Krishna alone in the forest even for a moment. Balarama is Sri Krishna's dearest friend and is a great reservoir of the nectar mellows of many kinds of transcendental pastimes.

Specific Pastimes of Lord Balarama
Balarama slays Dhenukasura
*********************
Dhenukasura was a powerful demon who had assumed the form of an ass. With his demon friends he was occupying Talavana, one of the twelve forests of Vrindavana. Out of fear of these demons no one could approach Talavana and enjoy the numerous flowers and fruits in the forest. Balarama, induced by His cowherd friends, entered the forest desiring to kill the demons. He began shaking the fruit trees, making a big noise. Dhenuka, furious at the intrusion, attacked Balarama with his rear legs, but Balarama easily picked him up by his legs and whirled him around until he died. As the other demon friends of Dhenuka rushed to attack, Krishna and Balarama picked them up and threw them on trees, killing them. Soon the forest was free of all demons, and it appeared that the bent trees were being directed by Balarama to pay obeisances to Krishna.

Balarama kills Pralambasura
********************
Once when Krishna and Balarama were playing with the cowherd boys, a demon named Pralamba entered their midst, disguised as a cowherd boy. Understanding the invincible potency of Krishna, he instead decided to abduct Balarama. At the end of the game, as the losing party he was supposed to carry Balarama on his shoulders. Carrying the Lord on his shoulders he ran swiftly, but Balarama realizing the true identity of demon began to make himself heavier and heavier. Unable to bear the weight, the demon assumed his original form which was like a huge dark effulgent cloud, decorated with golden ornaments. Balarama then bought His fist down the head of the demon splitting it into two and causing him to give up his life.

Balarama glorified by Krishna

As the elder brother of Krishna, Balarama was the object of His love and respect. Once when walking in the forest of Vrindavana, Krishna observed the trees bending down as if paying obeisances. He glorified the lotus feet of Balarama as being the object of devotion even for the demigods. He said that the trees, which were impersonalists in previous life times, witnessing the personal form of Balarama were now praying for His devotion. At other times when Balarama would get tired by playing, He would lie down the lap of one of the cowherd boys and Krishna would personally massage His feet, fan Him and give Him service. Such was the sweet reciprocation of love between Krishna and Balarama.

Yamuna devi chastised
******************
Once Lord Balarama, Who was at the time living in Dwarka, came back to stay in Vrindavana for two months. At this time He enjoyed pastimes with His gopi friends (who were different from the gopis of Krishna). Enjoying such pastimes on the bank of Yamuna at Rama-ghata, the Lord summoned Yamuna so that He could sport in the waters. When Yamuna devi did not respond. Lord Balarama took up His favorite weapon, His plow, and began to drag Yamuna in a hundred streams. Understanding the position of Balarama, Yamuna devi personally appeared and offered her obeisances to the Lord with many prayers in His glorification. Thus appeased the Lord entered and bathed in the waters of the river.

Kauravas chastised
***************
Samba, the darling son of Jambavati and Krishna, kidnapped Laksmana the daughter of Duryodhana from the assembly were she was supposed to choose her husband. The furious Kauravas after a prolonged fight, finally arrested Samba by sending in six of their greatest warriors. When the Yadavas heard of this they prepared for battle but Lord Balarama pacified them, preferring to find a peaceful solution. However when He requested the Kauravas to return Samba and Laksmana, the Kauravas responded by insulting Him and the Yadava dynasty. Understanding them to be ignorant in their false prestige, Balarama took His plow and began to drag Hastinapura into the Ganges. The terrified Kauravas now surrendered to the lotus feet of Balarama, begging for His mercy. They immediately returned Samba and Laksmana and had them married ceremoniously with many opulent gifts.

Balarama marries Revati
******************
In Satya yuga there was a King named Raivata whose daughter Revati was excellent in all respects. Unable to find a match suitable for her, the king took her to the court of Brahma for his advise. After waiting for some time when the king met with Brahma, he was shocked to learn that in the short time he spent in the Brahmaloka, millions of years had already passed on Earth and at the time Dvapara yuga was concluding. However Lord Brahma informed King Raivata that present at this time was Lord Balarama Who was more than qualified to be the husband of Revati.

King Raivata returned and approached Balarama to accept Revati as His wife. However Revati belonged to an earlier yuga when people were much larger physically. So Lord Balarama placed His plow on her head until she shrunk to an appropriate size and accepted her as His wife.

Balarama and Mahabharata
*********************
In general Balarama was equally affectionate to both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He accepted both Duryodhana and Bhima as His disciples in the art of mace-war. As a teacher He appreciated the superior technique of Duryodhana as opposed to the raw strength of Bhima. At the time of Mahabharata, He refused to take sides and instead went on an extended pilgrimage to the holy places. In the battle between Bhima and Duryodhana, He became angry at Bhima for killing Duryodhana by trickery, but was appeased by Sri Krishna.

Killing of Romaharshana
******************
Towards the end of Dvapara yuga thousands of sages assembled on the banks of Naimyasharana to perform a thousand year yajna in an effort to reverse the onset of Kali yuga. They appointed as their leader Romaharshana, one of the main disciple of Vyasadeva, who was also present when Sukadeva Goswami narrated Srimad Bhagavatam to King Parikshit.

When Lord Balarama entered the assembly, understanding Him to be the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all present rose to offer Him respect. However Romaharshana, proud at occupying the position of the leader did not get up. Lord Balarama could understand that even though Romaharshana was a an expert Vedantist, he had not yet realized these teachings. Considering him unqualified to lead the ceremony, Balarama touched him with a blade of grass causing him to die. He then instituted Suta, the son of Romaharshana as the leader of the assembly and continued with His pilgrimage.

The Mercy of Lord Balarama

Lord Balarama exemplifies the service attitude to Krishna. His only mission is to please Krishna by rendering service to Him, whether it is in the creation of the material worlds, maintaining the spiritual world or as His personal paraphernalia.

Lord Balarama is the eternal companion of Sri Krishna. He came as Lakshmana with Rama and later as Nityananda Prabhu with Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is the original spiritual master, and any one desiring to make spiritual progress must first get the mercy of Lord Balarama.

All glories to Lord Balarama !!

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. The Auckland Hare Krishna Temple is approaching Krishna devotees and well wishers in New Zealand and across the world in order to raise NZD$ 1 million within the next month to make the new Radha Giridhari Temple, Auckland, mortgage - free.

The Hon. Chris Carter, Minister for Ethnic Affairs, visited the Hare Krishna Temple on July 23, 2006 and unveiled a smaller version of the “1 million dollar Krishna painting” by renowned Ukrainian artist Dina Bandhu Das. The painting will be auctioned during the “Janmashtami” celebrations, Lord Krishna’s birthday on August 16, 2006. The same painting will be reproduced on a wall measuring 4.17 metres x 2.82 metres in the temple’s main worship hall. The temple is calling for sponsors to donate upto $1 million towards this painting. (See www.iskconnz.com/1million for details.)

Mr. Carter was shown around the temple facilities by the temple’s council members. He received blessings from the deities, Sri Sri Radha Giridhari in the form of the ‘satari’ placed on his head and sipped ‘charanamrit’ (holy water).

After unveiling the painting, he distributed certificates to graduates of the Bhakti-vriksha program, a course that involves serious study of the Vedic scriptures.

A copy of the Bhagavat Gita As It Is and the abridged version of Srimad Bhagavatam were given to the Minister as a memento of his visit.

Mr. Carter then partook of the opulent Sunday prasadam (feast) which consisted of puris, pakoras, rice, dal, vegetables and cakes and sweets. The Sunday mid-day feast is open to all visitors to the temple.

TIRUPATI, INDIA, July 19, 2006: After allegations were made that employees at Lord Venkateswara temple may be assisting Christians in their evangelical activities within the temple compound, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam which manages the temple ordered all 10,000 employees to start wearing the Tilak on their forehead. Even though the TTD conducted an investigation into the allegations and found no evidence of employees cooperating with Christians in their proselytizing, the TTD was pressured into taking action that would prevent any employees from entertaining any ideas by having them firmly commit to their faith. TTD's executive officer A.P.V.N. Sharma said that non-Hindu employees would be transferred to non-temple departments.

HPI adds: In a related development, Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a group of all Mathadhipatis Headed by H. H. Vishveshwara Thirtha Shripadaru Pejawar Math and other sadhus, in a meeting at Tirupathi on July 15, 2006, issued the following declaration. "We Hindus assembled here declare that we do not support directly or indirectly any group, institution, religion, media or political force which preaches, practices or works against Hindu Dharma in this country. We appeal to all Hindus in this country and elsewhere to subscribe to and support this declaration, the Tirupathi Declaration. We want all the Hindu Religious endowments to be managed by Hindu Bodies, and not by the Government. We want the Secular Government to release all religious endowments from its hold."

Tirupati: Seven Hills Area to Be Declared A Religious And Autonomous Township

HYDERABAD, INDIA, July 28, 2006: No other religion can be preached--and no mosques or churches built--in an 80,628 acre area around Tirupati's Balaji temple, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam said yesterday. The Devasthanam till now controlled a 6,600 acre area that includes Tirumala--the small temple town housing 10,000-15,000 people, mostly temple workers--and the ban applied there. The Andhra government has now handed over to the Devasthanam the rights to an additional 74,000 acres of surrounding hilly land, mostly a reserved forest. The move followed a report by a panel of religious heads and retired judges that Christian missionaries were distributing pamphlets and cassettes in and around Tirumala. A.P.V. N. Sharma, temple executive officer, said the entire area will be declared a religious and autonomous township. "Non-Hindus will no longer be employed in the service of Balaji," he added. The committee reported that 42 non-Hindus, living just outside Tirumala, were now engaged in peripheral temple-related services, such as transport and accommodation. Non-Hindu visitors will virtually be barred from the temple. "Even VIPs of other religions will have to sign a declaration that they have faith in Hinduism to gain entry," a spokesman said.

How astronauts experiencing no gravity are like realized souls experiencing no karma

Karma is a key Hindu concept not always easily explained. Comparing it with the gravity, however, helps to illustrate how it works. Obviously, the law of gravitation existed before Newton discovered it. Similarly, the law of karma was actively at work long before some ancient sage first consciously came to understand it. Both these laws apply equally to everybody, regardless of race, religion, nationality, sex and sexual orientation. And they did so before either was understood.

The fact that our actions on Earth are governed by the law of gravity does not mean that we are frozen in place and cannot move about. It simply means we have free will within limitations. We can run, for instance, but we cannot fly. Similarly, the fact that our experiences in life are governed by the law of karma does not mean that we are helpless and live at the mercy of fate. Again, it means we have free will within limitations. We can purposefully improve our lives, but not without facing and accounting for past misdeeds.

All of the physical experiences that I have on the Earth pleasant or unpleasant, good or bad are under the influence of gravity. In a broader sense, all of the experiences that I have in life pleasant or unpleasant, good or bad are under the influence of karma.

When an astronaut travels in space outside the range of Earth's gravitational pull, he exists in a state of zero gravity and has experiences that no one on the Earth's surface has ever had. When he returns from his space travels, he can only try to explain it. Yet nothing he can say can duplicate that experience he has had for others.

Hinduism claims that it is possible to travel beyond karma to a state of no karma just like the astronaut can travel beyond gravity to no gravity. If this is true and it has been done, those who did it experienced something none of the rest of us have. These jivanmuktis (enlightened beings) can try to describe their experience to others, but nothing they say can produce that liberated state in the lives of those who listen.

The astronauts who have experienced the gravity-free zone know that it is possible. They don't have to be told. The jivanmuktis who have experienced the karma-free zone know that it is possible. They also do not have to be told. Both the astronaut and the jivanmukti know what they know from their personal experience. No one can take that experience away from them. However, this experience that cannot be taken away can also not be given away, which leaves us with a question: How can those who have not had the experience be expected to understand or believe those who have? They must take their word for it. This is faith. Faith must suffice until experience takes hold.

How might we experience the karma-free state? Just as we achieve a state of zero gravity by performing a certain series of appropriate actions while under the influence of gravity, so can we achieve a state of zero karma by following a specific pattern of activity while under the influence of karma.

The space shuttle itself is designed to deal with gravity. When we walk toward it and climb into it, we do so under the influence of gravity. As we launch, we are contending with gravity. We are not concerned whether the gravity is good or bad. We are focused only on the effects of gravity with an aim of transcending gravity into its absence. In so choosing to perform these actions, we have necessarily given up options to act in other ways for other purposes. By giving up all actions not relevant to the process of going beyond gravity, it becomes possible for us to eventually achieve our goal of experiencing zero gravity.

Similarly, in order to reach a karma-free state, we must give up not only bad karma, but good karma as well. We must perform only that karma which is appropriate for the attainment of zero karma. Just as the concept of good gravity and bad gravity is supplanted by considerations of gravity and no gravity, so also can the axis of good and bad karma be exchanged for one of karma and no karma, when one seeks moksha, or liberation from birth and death.

KARAIKAL, INDIA, July 22, 2006: The CEDA (Centre for Environment and Development Alternatives) Trust, a non-governmental organization, carrying out tsunami rehabilitation works in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, has encouraged farmers to adopt organic farming methods. The Trust recently, at the advisory meeting for the farmers of its adopted villages in the coastal hamlet or T.R. Pattinam in the district, encouraged the farmers to adopt organic farming to restore the fertility of their lands that were reclaimed after the tsunami in these areas. Nisha, coordinator of CEDA Trust, Karaikal, said that Cordaid and Plan International extended financial assistance for the CEDA project for the reclamation of tsunami-hit lands in the Karaikal region. In all, 252 acres of land were reclaimed with the financial assistance of Cordaid and 257 acres by Plan International benefiting 342 families in the region. K. Nammazhwar, an expert in organic farming, explained the advantages of organic farming methods including protecting the land from the use of chemical fertilizers. More then 500 farmers participated in the meeting.

A man's brainpower, scientists say, can be damaged by sharing a bed. When they spend the night with a partner, their sleep patterns are disturbed, whether they make love or not.

This leads to poorer mental agility the next day.

Women do not suffer from the same problem. They have disturbed sleep if they share a bed, but tend to get better quality rest when they do drop off and their brain power remains undiminished.

The findings suggest if a man has an important day ahead he would be best to head off to the spare room rather than share the marital bed.

The research, featured in New Scientist magazine, was presented to the Forum of European Neurosciences in Vienna last week.

The study also found sharing a bed can impact on dreams.

Typically, women remembered more of their dreams after sleeping alone, while men recalled the most after sex.

And while most men believed having a partner helped them to drop off, most women felt they slept better when alone.

This could be because men were more often blamed for some of the obvious causes of disturbed sleep, such as snoring, "tossing and turning" and "hogging the doona".

Over-heating because of the extra warmth generated by sleeping beside another person may be just as blameworthy for a sleep-deprived night as other factors.

Our Vrinda Kunda Prison Preaching expanded to Gwalior Central Jail on Saturday, 17th June. Jankinatha Das, a disciple of Gopal Krishna Maharaja, who runs this program, contacted one of our life members in Gwalior, Dr. Suneet Misra to arrange a program in the Gwalior Central Jail. His relative, Sri Suneet Sharma is the Deputy Jailor there and he was very enthusiastic to have us come.

He talked to Sri Raja Ram Dangi, Head Jailor, and he was also very anxious for us to do our program in their jail. Actually some other group who believes that Gayatri is the mantra for the age of Kali had already done some programs there and, seeing the result, they were happy to also have us come to enliven and enlighten the prisoners.

Even in temple and other religious gatherings I have seldom seen the type of welcome we received. Sri Dangi himself entered our names and particulars in the register, a formality that we always have to do before entering any jail. They have these huge wooden doors and inside is like a vestibule with offices on either side and then another set of huge wooden doors. They always lock the first set behind us before opening the second set. When the second set swung open, we were suprised to see a brass band in full uniform waiting to escort us.

The band broke into a famous Mira Bai song and we walked between neatly made white chalk lines on the path for about 100 meters. Then for the next 200 meters to the door of the grand courtyard there were about 100 prisoners in clean yellow uniforms with little yellow Nehru caps to match. They were raining flower petals on us and chanting Veda Stutis, om indra devatah, om surya devatah, om candrama devatah, om vayu devatah…

We were completely flabergasted. Sri Dangi, seeing my surprise, leaned over in my ear and said that the other group had made some of the prisoners into purohits. Then we entered the doors of the courtyard, where 3,000 prisoners were all sitting in the shade of the trees there. They all stood up and applauded as we entered. Then we were escorted on to a very large stage where they had already placed a picture of Radha Krishna on a makeshift altar with a large brass lamp next to Them. They even had a nice but simple Vyasasana set up with cushions all around it.

I then lit the five wicks on the lamp and we garlanded Radha Krishna, and the pictures of Radha Shyamsundar, Krishna Balaram, and Srila Prabhupad that we had brought with us. We sat down and then the prisoners themselves had a bhajan group with a very expert singer who played harmonium, while another prisoner played tabla and they did two popular Hindi Krishna Bhajans. One of them was all about Radha asking everyone if they have seen Shyam, that was pulling our heart strings.

Then we taught the prisoners the mahamantra which most of them already knew anyway and had kirtan with 3,000 prisoners enthusiastically responding. Braja Bhumi, Temple President of Jhansi who had come to join us in the program, then spoke explaining that not only the prisoners, but even the people outside were also prisoners. Citing many verses he explained that real reform can only come when we actually change our heart. The prisoners applauded many of his points.

Then before I spoke, I thanked the prison administration for organizing such are reception that we have never seen in any other Jail. Picking up the que from Braja Bhumi Prabhu, I began explaining how there was no difference between us and them. We are all prisoners in this material world and offenders. I have seen other groups come and talk down to them, like they are aparadhis and we are pure. They immediately warmed up by this point. When I mentioned our four regulative principles, to my surprise, they all applauded!

I finished with the dramatical rendition of Jagai and Madai showing how these two aparadhis became saints by the mercy of Chaitanya and Nityananda Prabhus simply by chanting the Holy Names. This emphasized the point that we are all offenders in Kali yuga. I told them I used to do all the same things as Jagai and Madai, but my spiritual Master His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada had saved us all with the chanting of Hare Krishna. You too can make your lives successful the same way and they all applauded enthusiastically.

Then Braja Bhumi finished off with an ecstatic kirtan. We invited all the prisoners to stand up and dance. Soon 3,000 prisoners were dancing jumping up and down ecstatically. It was really a sight to see! We had brought prasadam for them, which is one of the benefits of our prison preaching in India, as most countries won’t allow you to bring prasad inside the jail. Sri Dangi thanked us all and explained that the boxes of prasad, would be brought to each barrack (the large number of prisoners would have made a difficult scene) and they all cheered. He also made us promise to return on July 1st.

We had set up a book stall and sold many books and distributed quite a few japa malas also. We give the malas free on the promise that they actually chant on them. We usually go through about a hundred malas a month if anyone wants to sponsor them.

Actually Jankinatha Prabhu in his regular circle of Agra, Mathura, and Bharatpur, has about a dozen prisoners who chant 64 rounds. There are dozens who are doing sixteen rounds and a hundred or so who chant less than sixteen. He has distributed many books and now the prisoners who are doing sixteen rounds are asking about initiation. Anyone interested?

Jankinatha Prabhu is practically carrying on this preaching single handedly. The Jailers are all very appreciative since they all say that since our programs started, they have less fights and difficulties than before. I have been subsidizing his program from our Vrinda Kunda project. We are managing on a budget of just over $100 month. This is a selfless service, as neither we’re going to get any daksina, nor we’re going to get nice prasad like when we do at house programs. Instead, we have to bring the prasad! Anyone desiring to help out can contact me.

The next day we went to Jhansi, the city where Srila Prabhupada made his first attempt with the League of Devotees. Just underneath the imposing Jhansi Fort, of Rani Laxmi Bai, the famous Queen of Jhansi, we have a very nice property. One Bengali gentleman, Sri Ram Mukharjee, father of the well-know Bollywood startlet Rani Mukharjee, donated his ancestral house to ISKCON to make a temple there. Under the able guidance of Braja Bhumi Prabhu, disciple of Lokanatha Swami, the preaching is expanding in the old preaching grounds of Srila Prabhupada.

Two Janmastami’s ago, I was there and over 20,000 people attended the function. Srila Prabhupad would be very pleased to see this. Then next day, I met Dr. Suresh Chand Shastri with whom Prabhupada used to stay on his visits to Jhansi. He’ll be 80 in August but is still going strong and can talk endlessly about his association with Srila Prabhupada.

Scientists Collide with Linguists to Assert Indigenous origin of Indian Civilization

Comprehensive population genetics data along with archeological and astronomical evidence presented at June 23-25, 2006 conference in Dartmouth, MA, overwhelmingly concluded that Indian civilization and its human population is indigenous.

In fact, the original people and culture within the Indian Subcontinent may even be a likely pool for the genetic, linguistic, and cultural origin of the most rest of the world, particularly Europe and Asia.

Leading evidences come from population genetics, which were presented by two leading researchers in the field, Dr. V. K. Kashyap, National Institute of Biologicals, India, and Dr. Peter Underhill of Stanford University in California. Their results generally contradict the notion Aryan invasion/migration theory for the origin of Indian civilization.

Underhill concluded "the spatial frequency distributions of both L1 frequency and variance levels show a spreading pattern emanating from India", referring to a Y chromosome marker. He, however, put several caveats before interpreting genetic data, including "Y-ancestry may not always reflect the ancestry of the rest of the genome"

Dr. Kashyap, on the other hand, with the most comprehensive set of genetic data was quite emphatic in his assertion that there is "no clear genetic evidence for an intrusion of Indo-Aryan people into India, [and] establishment of caste system and gene flow."

Michael Witzel, a Harvard linguist, who is known to lead the idea of Aryan invasion/migration/influx theory in more recent times, continued to question genetic evidence on the basis that it does not provide the time resolution to explain events that may have been involved in Aryan presence in India.

Dr. Kashyap's reply was that even though the time resolution needs further work, the fact that there are clear and distinct differences in the gene pools of Indian population and those of Central Asian and European groups, the evidence nevertheless negates any Aryan invasion or migration into Indian Subcontinent.

Witzel though refused to present his own data and evidence for his theories despite being invited to do so was nevertheless present in the conference and raised many questions. Some of his commentaries questioning the credibility of scholars evoked sharp responses from other participants.

Rig Veda has been dated to 1,500 BC by those who use linguistics to claim its origin Aryans coming out of Central Asia and Europe. Archaeologist B.B. Lal and scientist and historian N.S. Rajaram disagreed with the position of linguists, in particular Witzel who claimed literary and linguistic evidence for the non-Indian origin of the Vedic civilization.

Dr. Narahari Achar, a physicist from University of Memphis clearly showed with astronomical analysis that the Mahabharata war in 3,067 BC, thus poking a major hole in the outside Aryan origin of Vedic people.

Interestingly, Witzel stated, for the first time to many in the audience, that he and his colleagues no longer subscribe to Aryan invasion theory.

Dr. Bal Ram Singh, Director, Center for Indic Studies at UMass Dartmouth, which organized the conference was appalled at the level of visceral feelings Witzel holds against some of the scholars in the field, but felt satisfied with the overall outcome of the conference.

"I am glad to see people who have been scholarly shooting at each other for about a decade are finally in one room, this is a progress", said Singh.

The conference was able to bring together in one room for the first time experts from genetics, archeology, physics, linguistics, anthropology, history, and philosophy. A proceedings of the conference is expected to come out soon, detailing various arguments on the origin of Indian civilization.

This news piece gives food for thought about a little-known industry that has blossomed from devotees' shaved heads. According to this article, hair worth about US$136 million collected from temple barbers is shipped from India, one of the largest exporters of human hair, to factories in China while the United States imported hair worth $82 million during the 2004-05 fiscal year from India. Jaswanth Soundarapandian, regional director of the government's council on hair export, said, "There has been a steady rise in demand from China. However, while it remains our biggest buyer, the burgeoning hair fashion trends in countries like the United States of America and European countries have helped to expand trade." The news item clarified, "Exporters say buyers from countries such as the United States pay $1.50 for a strand of hair that expensive beauty salons may then weave into extensions or wigs that can sell for between $1,500 and $3,000. Exporters say that Hollywood is one of the biggest consumers of human hair." Apparently the famous temple in Tirupati is the largest hair supplier and in the last year the temple sold over 3 million kilos of hair for about 1 million dollars. The temple now employs over six-hundred barbers. One hundred of these barbers are females that service the 4,500 to 20,000 female devotees who devotedly offer their hair to God on a daily b asis.

Many Indian women offer their hair to deities in Hindu temples in a show of respect and gratitude. Few realize the offerings can wind up in a lucrative export market serving China and Hollywood.

NEW DELHI, India (WOMENSENEWS)--When Nafisa Ali, a Bollywood actor and Miss India 1976, shaved her hair, she wasn't trying to make a style statement.

She offered her waist-length locks at the 1,200-year-old Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, a town in Chittor district of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, to thank its deity for granting her a private wish she had made on behalf of her family that had given her life new meaning. The tradition of offering hair is a symbol of religious devotion and surrender of the ego.

"Twelve years ago, when I was 37 years old, I had taken a vow that if my wish was granted, I would give my hair at Tirupati," Ali told Women's eNews.

Little did she know that this mark of respect to the Hindu gods would be collected in gunny bags by temple workers and stored in special containers for auction to hair exporters.

It's not possible to say exactly where the actor's hair went, but a great deal of women's hair collected at temples winds up as hair extensions for Hollywood film actors who pay as much as $3,000 for the final product.

Although both men and women offer their hair at temples, most of the hair that is exported for the lucrative salon business comes from women. Women's hair is usually long, dark and silky, and is most prized by merchants and wig-makers.

Exporters say hair from men is usually used for coat linings and to extract L-Cystein, a protein used as raw material for a range of products including baby food and doughnuts.
Five Categories of Hair

Wholesalers sort hair into five categories. The kind that is black and longer than 6 inches is the most sought after. This "remy" or "black gold" category sells for as much as $160 per kilogram.

The second category of black hair, between 8 and 16 inches long, sells for around $44 a kilogram. The third category of black hair, shorter than 8 inches, sells for under a dollar a kilogram. The fourth and fifth categories are gray hair shorter than 8 inches, which sell for about 10 cents a kilogram.

Once exporters have bought hair they re-sort it into straight, wavy, silky and curly hair. The hair is then shampooed, dried in the sun and combed.

Every year hair worth about $136 million is shipped from India, one of the largest exporters of human hair, to factories in China. There, Chinese hair is mixed with Indian hair to make wigs and hair extensions for Western markets.

While China is the biggest market for Indian hair, Jaswanth Soundarapandian, regional director of the government's council on hair export, says other countries are also important. He told Women's eNews that hair worth $82 million was exported to the United States during the 2004-05 fiscal year, 30 percent more than the previous year. He said that for the three-quarter period between April 2005 and December 2005 exports fetched $54 million.

"There has been a steady rise in demand from China," he says. "However, while it remains our biggest buyer, the burgeoning hair fashion trends in countries like the United States of America and European countries have helped to expand trade."
Hollywood a Major Consumer

Exporters say buyers from countries such as the United States pay $1.50 for a strand of hair that expensive beauty salons may then weave into extensions or wigs that can sell for between $1,500 and $3,000. Exporters say that Hollywood is one of the biggest consumers of human hair.

"Hair that is thrown away is waste but hair that is collected is money," says Kishore Gupta, one of the largest exporters of human hair. Gupta says his Chennai-based Gupta Enterprises boasts an annual turnover of over $20 million and that he expects this figure to grow in coming years.

Hindu temples, where devotees such as Nafisa Ali tonsure their hair, are the largest hair suppliers. The top grosser is the famous temple in Tirupati.

Every year, over 9 million devotees stand in serpentine queues to pay obeisance to its deity and have their heads shorn to fulfill a vow or pledge. After the hair is collected, the temple stores it in 14 steel containers, with male and female hair kept separate. Once the warehouse is stocked, auction notices are advertised in four languages, all south Indian, in three popular newspapers and on the temple's official Web site.

In the most recent financial year the temple sold over 3 million kilos of hair for about $1 million.
Hair Offerings Rising With Population

Temple administrators say that the volume of hair has been increasing every year since the 1980s as the number of devotees has risen in tandem with the overall population of the country.

The temple, which employed only a few barbers in the 1960s and 1970s now employs 600 barbers who work around the clock. Demand for their services is so intense that the temple has begun allowing women into the formerly all-male ranks.

In May 2005, 100 female barbers joined the "kalyanakatta," the temple enclosure where tonsuring is performed. The female barbers cater to female devotees, who number about 4,500 out of the 20,000 who tonsure their hair every day.

While the female barbers earn about $68 a month, their female clients are paid nothing. Male and female devotees offer their hair as part of religious practice.

Exporters also buy hair from salons and rag-pickers. In the village of Bhagyanagar, Karnataka, about 2,000 families depend on the hair they collect from garbage dumps.

Gupta, the hair exporter, said that he distributes plastic bags to women in the local village near his factory in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, to keep outside their huts. Every time they comb their hair, those that fall are collected in the bag. After a week, a broker will collect these bags and pay the women a small sum.

(2) kirtanam - One should not talk of sex life. (Prajalpa) One should talk of Krishna and discuss ones realizations with one’s friends, other brahmacari’s. (Practice gravity).

(3) kelih- Don’t (play) or dally with the opposite sex, (even if it is your service to deal with them, try to minimize it) . ‘Avyartha-kalatvam’- Rupa Goswami says in NOD. Pure devotees don’t waste their time, they always are cautious to make sure they are always engaged positively in K.C.

(4) preksanam- Don’t look lustfully at the opposite sex. Focus your eyes (or remember) on your favorite deity form of the Lord.

(5) guhyabhasanam- Don’t talk intimately with the opposite sex in a secluded place. Make strong friendships with other brahmacari’s, (or offer your choice prayerful words to the deity instead).

(6) sankalpo- Don’t decide to engage in sexual intercourse. Make sure you get proper counseling with a senior devotee(s) you have implicit trust in, if you have fallen to this bad state of mind. (Thinking, feeling, willing).

(7) adhyavasayas- Don’t endeavor for sex life. Endeavor to improve or get better devotees association then you have now.

(8) ca kriyanirvrttir - Don’t engage in sex life. Doing it has more trouble in store for you (health, and otherwise) then you think. Control the senses, mind, activities by devotional service.

nirvrttir eva ca - One executes real brahmacarya when all these activities come to a halt. (Sridhara 6.1.12).

Etan maithunyam astangam pravadanti manisinah vikarita brahmacaryam eda astanam laksanam iti

(SB. 7.15.36 Purport) “In our Krsna consciousness movement it is advised, therefore, that the sannyasis and brahmacaris keep strictly aloof from the association of women so that there will be no chance of their falling down again as victims of lusty desires.”

“Japa means tapa, tapasya. And that is drdha-vrata. Tapasa brahmacaryena. Tapasya begins with brahmacarya. There is no tapasya, there is no brahmacarya, there is no drdha-vrata,” (Rm. Conv. Jan 31, 1977)

“So this is the process. Tapasa brahmacaryena. Brahmacarya is very, very essential. And that is, when one becomes detestful to sex life, that is the beginning of spiritual life. That is the beginning of spiritual life.” (Lect CC Adi 1.11, April 4,’75) (see determination)

(SB.1.5.26) tatranvaham krsna-kathah pragayatam anugrahenasrnavam manoharah tah sraddhaya me ‘nupadam visrnvatah priyasravasy anga mamabhavad rucih

O Vyasadeva, in that association and by the mercy of those great Vedantists, I could hear 0them describe the attractive activities of Lord Krsna And thus listening attentively, my taste for hearing of the Personality of Godhead increased at every step.

Lord Sri Krsna, the Absolute Personality of Godhead, is attractive not only in His personal features, but also in His transcendental activities. It is so because the Absolute is absolute by His name, fame, form, pastimes, entourage, paraphernalia, etc. The Lord descends on this material world out of His causeless mercy and displays His various transcendental pastimes as a human being so that human beings attracted towards Him become able to go back to Godhead. Men are naturally apt to hear histories and narrations of various personalities performing mundane activities, without knowing that by such association one simply wastes valuable time and also becomes addicted to the three qualities of mundane nature. Instead of wasting time, one can get spiritual success by turning his attention to the transcendental pastimes of the Lord. By hearing the narration of the pastimes of the Lord, one contacts directly the Personality of Godhead, and, as explained before, by hearing about the Personality of Godhead, from within, all accumulated sins of the mundane creature are cleared. Thus being cleared of all sins, the hearer gradually becomes liberated from mundane association and becomes attracted to the features of the Lord. Narada Muni has just explained this by his personal experience. The whole idea is that simply by hearing about the Lord’s pastimes one can become one of the associates of the Lord. Narada Muni has eternal life, unlimited knowledge and unfathomed bliss, and he can travel all over the material and spiritual worlds without restriction. One can attain to the highest perfection of life simply by attentive hearing of the transcendental pastimes of the Lord from the right sources, as Sri Narada heard them from the pure devotees (bhakti-vedantas) in his previous life. This process of hearing in the association of the devotees is especially recommended in this age of quarrel (Kali).

“If one is absent-minded, he cannot work nicely because mind is absent or not in order. Therefore our method of controlling the senses is to engage the senses in the service of the Lord. The first engagement should be that mind should be always absorbed in thoughts of Krsna. Always engaged. These boys, they are always engaged. Just like in offering arcana to the Deities from early morning up to ten o’clock at night, and then they go to rest. Again rise early in the morning. So somebody is engaged n cleansing the temple, somebody is engaged in dressing the Deity, somebody is engaged in cooking for the Deity, somebody is engaged going in Tokyo city for distributing literature, somebody is performing kirtana here, somebody is reading our various books. In this way we have got twenty-five hours engagement instead of twenty-four hours. So mind cannot go outside Krsna. That is called Krsna conscious. We don’t allow the mind go out of Krsna’s service. And this is sannyasa.”

(4) preksanam- Don’t look lustfully at the opposite sex. Focus your eyes (or remember) on your favorite deity form of the Lord. (See SB. 6.18.41-42)

A woman’s face is as attractive and beautiful as a blossoming lotus flower during autumn. Her words are very sweet, and they give pleasure to the ear, but if we study a woman’s heart, we can understand it to be extremely sharp, like the blade of a razor. In these circumstances, who could understand the dealings of a woman?

Woman is now depicted very well from the materialistic point of view by Kasyapa Muni. Women are generally known as the fair sex, and especially in youth, at the age of sixteen or seventeen, women are very attractive to men. Therefore a woman’s face is compared to a blooming lotus flower in autumn. Just as a lotus is extremely beautiful in autumn, a woman at the threshold of youthful beauty is extremely attractive. In Sanskrit a woman’s voice is called nari-svara because women generally sing and their singing is very attractive. At the present moment, cinema artists, especially female singers, are especially welcome. Some of them earn fabulous amounts of money simply by singing. Therefore, as taught by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a woman’s singing is dangerous because it can make a sannyasi fall a victim to the woman. Sannyasa means giving up the company of women, but if a sannyasi hears the voice of a woman and sees her beautiful face, he certainly becomes attracted and is sure to fall down. There have been many examples. Even the great sage Visvamitra fell a victim to Menaka. Therefore a person desiring to advance in spiritual consciousness must be especially careful not to see a woman’s face or hear a woman’s voice. To see a woman’s face and appreciate its beauty or to hear a woman’s voice and appreciate her singing as very nice is a subtle falldown for a brahmacari or sannyasi. Thus the description of a woman’s features by Kasyapa Muni is very instructive.

When a woman’s bodily features are attractive, when her face is beautiful and when her voice is sweet, she is naturally a trap for a man. The sastras advise that when such a woman comes to serve a man, she should be considered to be like a dark well covered by grass. In the fields there are many such wells, and a man who does not know about them drops through the grass and falls down. Thus there are many such instructions. Since the attraction of the material world is based on attraction for women, Kasyapa Muni thought, “Under the circumstances, who can understand the heart of a woman?” Canakya Pandita has also advised, visvaso naiva kartavyah strisu raja-kulesu ca: “There are two persons one should not trust-a politician and a woman.” These, of course, are authoritative sastric injunctions, and we should therefore be very careful in our dealings with women.

Sometimes our Krsna consciousness movement is criticized for mingling men and women, but Krsna consciousness is meant for anyone. Whether one is a man or woman does not matter. Lord Krsna personally says, striyo vaisyas tatha sudras te ‘pi yanti param gatim: whether one is a woman, sudra or vaisya, not to speak of being a brahmana or ksatriya, everyone is fit to return home, back to Godhead, if he strictly follows the instructions of the spiritual master and sastra. We therefore request all the members of the Krsna consciousness movement-both men and women-not to be attracted by bodily features but only to be attracted by Krsna. Then everything will be all right. Otherwise there will be danger.

Here is a practical solution to the problem of agitation in the presence of so many women in Kali Yuga. Avoid unnecessary association, but be practical. Remember! The sense objects are not at fault. It’s how one understands the purpose of the various sense objects that creates ones difficulties.

All creatures and all things must be offered for Krishna’s enjoyment. If one understands this always, then one can be pacified despite provocation. But disturbance or not, we must carry on our preaching duties. Get association, and counseling. Endeavor for rectifying your strength. Then after regaining strength-go out to preach again. This time more cautious then before you had the initial weakness.

“Who has introduced these things, that women cannot have chanting japa in the temple, they cannot perform the arati and so many things? If they become agitated, then let the brahmacaris go to the forest, I have never introduced these things. The brahmacaris cannot remain in the presence of women in the temple, then they may go to the forest, not remaining in New York City, because in New York there are so many women, so how they can avoid seeing? Best thing is to go to the forest for not seeing any women, if they become so easily agitated, but then no one will either see them and how our preaching work will go on?”.. It is not possible.”

Those who are not married-sannyasis, vanaprasthas and brahmacaris-should never associate with women by glancing, touching, conversing, joking or sporting. Neither should they ever associate with any living entity engaged in sexual activities.

Praninah indicates all living entities, whether birds, bees or human beings. Among most species of life, sexual intercourse is preceded by diverse mating rituals. In human society, all types of entertainment (books, music, films) and all places of amusement (restaurants, shopping centers, resorts) are designed to stimulate the sexual urge and create an aura of “romance.” One who is not married-a sannyasi, brahmacari or vanaprastha-should rigidly avoid anything related to sex and of course should never see any living entity, whether bird, insect or human, engaging in the various phases of sexual intercourse. When a man jokes with a woman, an intimate, sexually-charged atmosphere is immediately created, and this should also be avoided for those aspiring to practice celibacy. Even a householder who becomes attached to such activities will also fall down into the darkness of ignorance.

(6) sankalpo- The determination to engage in sexual intercourse. Don’t contemplate to engage in sexual intercourse. Be determined to make sure you get proper counseling with a senior devotee(s) you have implicit trust in, if you have fallen to this bad state of mind. (Thinking, feeling, willing).

asankalpaj jayet kamam krodham kama-vivarjanat

arthanartheksaya lobham bhayam tattvavamarsanat

By making plans with determination, one should give up lusty desires for sense gratification. Similarly, by giving up envy one should conquer anger, by discussing the disadvantages of accumulating wealth one should give up greed, and by discussing the truth one should give up fear.

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has suggested how one can conquer lusty desires for sense gratification. One cannot give up thinking of women, for thinking in this way is natural; even while walking on the street, one will see so many women. However, if one is determined not to live with a woman, even while seeing a woman he will not become lusty. If one is determined not to have sex, he can automatically conquer lusty desires. The example given in this regard is that even if one is hungry, if on a particular day he is determined to observe fasting, he can naturally conquer the disturbances of hunger and thirst. If one is determined not to be envious of anyone, he can naturally conquer anger. Similarly, one can give up the desire to accumulate wealth simply by considering how difficult it is to protect the money in one’s possession. If one keeps a large amount of cash with him, he is always anxious about keeping it properly. Thus if one discusses the disadvantages of accumulating wealth, he can naturally give up business without difficulty.

If one doesn’t get help to stop this contemplation at an early stage, then eventually it goes from thinking, to feeling. At this point, devoid of mind and sense control, the living entity loses all reasoning, and is unable to hear the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the form of sastras.

Such a person usually ends up (at best, through counseling) getting married, or (at worse) becomes a debauchee-falling into illicit life. Sometimes he tries to satisfy this craving through artificial means. (See SB 2.6.20 Purport)

(SB 6.1.62) stambhayann atmanatmanam yavat sattvam yatha-srutam

na sasaka samadhatum mano madana-vepitam

As far as possible he patiently tried to remember the instructions of the sastras not even to see a woman. With the help of this knowledge and his intellect, he tried to control his lusty desires, but because of the force of Cupid within his heart, he failed to control his mind”.

“Regarding your proposed marriage, if you think it is nice then you have all my blessings upon you both. If you do not think you can remain brahmacari, then it is better to remain in Krsna Consciousness as householder and not pretend to brahmacarya artificially. From your description the girl seems very qualified and sincere, so you continue to train her in our Krsna Conscious way of life and she will work together with you as your helpmeet in Krsna’s service.” (to Jananivas Sept. 29,’70)

Incidentally, Jananivasa Prabhu never got married. Instead since 1971 he has dedicated his life to the worship of Sri Sri Radha-Madhava in Mayapur, thus setting a wonderful example of dedication in Deity worship for all brahmacari’s to follow.

(7) adhyavasayas- To endeavor for sex life. Don’t endeavor for sex life.

Endeavor to improve or get better devotees association then you have now.

Even if austerity and brahmacarya are painful because we want to be unrestricted, as soon as we are regulated, what appeared to be painful is in practice not painful.

There are two classes of men-those who are sober (dhira) and those who are extravagant (adhira). When one, in spite of provocation or in spite of the presence of a source of mental agitation, can remain steady in his position, he is called dhira. An example of a dhira is given by Kalidasa Pandita, a great Sanskrit poet who wrote a book called Kumara-sambhava, wherein he has given an example concerning Lord Siva. It appears that when the demigods were fighting the demons and were being defeated, they decided that they could be saved by a commander-in-chief born from the semina of Lord Siva. Lord Siva, however, was in meditation, and to acquire the needed semina was very difficult. They therefore sent Parvati, a young girl, who appeared before Lord Siva and worshiped his genitals. Although this young girl sat before Lord Siva and touched his genitals, Lord Siva was steady in meditation. Kalidasa says, “Here is an example of a dhira, for despite a young girl’s touching his genitals, he was undisturbed.”

Similarly, someone sent a young prostitute to disturb Haridasa Thakura, and upon hearing her appeals for intercourse, Haridasa Thakura said, “Yes, your proposal is very nice. please sit down and let me finish my chanting, and then we shall enjoy.” Morning came and the prostitute became impatient, but Haridasa Thakura replied, “I’m very sorry. I could not finish my chanting. Come tonight again.” The prostitute came for three nights, and on the third night she fell down at his feet, confessed her intentions, and pleaded with him, “I was induced to perform this act by a man who is your enemy. Kindly excuse me.” Haridasa Thakura then replied, “I know all about that, but I allowed you to come here for three days so that you could be converted and become a devotee. Now take these chanting beads, and go on chanting. I am leaving this place.” Here is another example of a dhira who has control of his body (deha), words (vac), and intelligence (buddhi). One’s body, words and intelligence should be controlled by one who is dhira and who actually knows the principles of religion.

(8) ca kriyanirvrttir - Don’t engage in sex life. Doing it has more trouble in store for you (health, and otherwise) then you think. Control the senses, mind, activities by devotional service.

(Lect SB 6.1.21-22) “Of course, one who thinks that family life is too big a responsibility can forgo it and thus avoid a lot of trouble. Family responsibility is very great; therefore if a man feels he cannot accept the responsibility, he should remain a brahmacari, a celibate student. A person who practices the science of brahmacarya under the care of a spiritual master automatically becomes seventy-five percent free from material entanglement.”

“At the present moment, in the materialistic concept of life, everyone is servant of the senses. Everyone acts by the dictation of the senses; therefore they can be called, in other words, as godasa, servant of the senses. Instead of becoming servant of the senses, one has to become the master of the senses. That is called gosvami, master of the senses. So how to become master of the senses? Senses are very strong. How one can become master? The simple method is when one engages the senses in the service of the Supreme Lord, it is automatically controlled.”

Etan maithunyam astangam pravadanti manisinah

vikarita brahmacaryam eda astanam laksanam iti

These eight kinds of enjoyments are eight kinds of breaks in the current of Akhanda brahmacari life. We must avoid these eight interruptions with great care, hard work and diligent self-introspection (always analyzing at all times to observe your true motivations). Only he who is truly free from these eight breaks can be technically called a brahmacari.

Srila Prabhupada has also acknowledged that in Kali Yuga it may be difficult to strictly follow all the details in avoiding these eight breaks in brahmacari life, but Krsna conscious life following the regulative principles will help the devotee to prevail over the occaisional attack by maya.

“We are giving you prasadam. By eating, eating, eating, eating, you one day will become Krishna conscious, simply by eating. Because you are so dull, you cannot understand the philosophy, You know the belly like the animals. So therefore we are giving facility. “All fill up your belly and you’ll be iinfected.” As infected with some disease, so this is Krishna-infected praseadam. You take it and one day you’ll be diseased with Krishna consciousness.”

The Brahmachari And The Chaste Wife

The following story from the Nrsimha Purana appeared in issue number 11 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu, the free fortnightly email magazine from ISKCON Gopal Jiu Publications. It illustrates the negative effects of pride, as well as the power of a chaste lady.

SPECIAL POWER

There was once a righteous brahmana named Kasyapa. He had mastered all of the scriptures and was expert in explaining them. Disinclined to performing another’s duty, he was daily absorbed in the worship of Lord Narasimha and was always engaged in performing yajna. Every morning and evening he would offer oblations into the sacred fire and he would always show proper hospitality to the brahmanas and guests at his residence.

His wife was named Savitri. She was a high-minded lady, was honored for her virtue, and she led a spotless life in service to her husband. Due to her chastity and devotion she was endowed with the power of knowing things beyond the range of the senses.

GREAT BRAHMACARI

There was also a wise brahmana named Yajnasharman living in the land of Koshala. He had a devoted and religious wife named Rohini who was endowed with all auspicious features and an unblemished character.

After some time Rohini gave birth to a son. Yajnasharman performed all of the recommended purificatory ceremonies for his son as described in the Vedas. The boy was named Devasharman. When he was eight years old his father performed his sacred thread ceremony and engaged him in study of the Vedas.

After Devasharman had mastered the Vedas his father died.

At the death of Yajnasharman, both the son and the mother were grief-stricken. Devasharman performed the funeral ceremonies for his father according to the instructions of saintly persons, and then he decided to travel to different places of pilgrimage. Devasharman’s fame as a great brahmacari gradually spread far and wide. He had no residence and was always wandering from one place to another. Maintaining himself by begging alms, he was always chanting Vedic mantras and performing sacrifices. Meanwhile, with her husband dead and her only son living as an ascetic, Devasharman’s mother Rohini had no means of support and was suffering terribly.

BURNT TO ASHES

In the course of his wanderings, one day Devasharman came to the bank of a river, where he took bath. Spreading his cloth on the ground to dry, he sat in meditation. Just then, a crow and a crane came and suddenly flew away with his cloth. Seeing this, Devasharman became angry and shouted abuses at them. The birds then dropped the cloth on the ground, passed stool on it, and flew away. Devasharman looked at them with wrath, and immediately the birds burned to ashes. Surprised to see this, Devasharman concluded that there was no one in the world equal to him in penance.

Proud of the strength of his austerity, Devasharman left the river to seek alms at a nearby village. He came to the house where the devoted wife Savitri and her husband Kasyapa lived. Devasharman came to their door and requested Savitri to give him alms. However, Savitri was just then serving her husband his mid-day meal. Although she saw Devasharman at the door, she remained silent and attentive to her husband. After her husband had eaten, she washed his feet with warm water. Only then did she come forward to offer alms to the brahmacari.

Having been made to wait for so long, Devasharman was very angry. He glared at the devoted housewife again and again with red-hot eyes. Seeing his conduct, Savitri laughed and said, “O furious sage! I am not the crow or the crane that fell down dead on the bank of the river by the strength of your anger. If you want to accept alms from me you will have to behave properly.”

Collecting the alms given by Savitri, Devasharman quietly left that place.

Walking back to the river, he again and again thought in his mind, “How it was that she had come to know of the death of the crow and the crane?” Leaving his begging bowl by the river, Devasharman returned to the village.

After the devoted Savitri had finished her meal and her husband had gone out, the brahmacari came to her residence and said, “O blessed woman, please tell me how you acquired this mystic power of knowing things beyond the senses?”

SAGACIOUS ADVICE

That virtuous and devoted woman Savitri replied, “O brahmana, please listen attentively to the answer to this question. The mystic power that I possess is the result of careful and consistent observance of the prescribed duties of a chaste wife. Service to one’s husband is the established duty of women.

O high-minded one, I have always followed that duty. Indeed, I know nothing else. I have acquired this power because day and night, without questioning, I have given complete satisfaction to my husband, waiting upon him with love and devotion.

“If you are interested to listen, I will tell you something else. Your father was a brahmana who lived on alms. You took lessons from him on the Vedas. When he died you performed his funeral ceremonies. Then, ignoring your aged and widowed mother, you came here. That poor wretched woman is now without any support while your sole interest is only to feed yourself! Your mother bore you in her womb. After you were born she nurtured you and brought you up with all love and affection. She did everything for you including cleaning your stool. You have deserted her and have been practicing austerities in the forest. O brahmana, aren’t you ashamed? What do you hope to gain by wandering about in the forest?

“Because of the suffering of your mother a bad odor is coming from your mouth. Whatever strength and power you have is only due to your father, who performed various samskaras in your life.

“O evil-minded sinner! Just recently, for no reason, you have burnt to death two innocent birds. As a result of this all of your sacred baths, your visits to different holy places, and all your meditation and sacrifices have been in vain. O brahmana, that person who sees their mother in a poor and wretched condition lives in vain, whereas he who is full of regard for his mother and who always protects her with devotion gets all rewards in this world and hereafter.

“You should immediately go to your mother and save her life. Her protection is your highest penance. Give up your anger, for it destroys all merits accumulated in this world and in the next. You should atone for the sin of killing the birds. O brahmacari, what I have spoken to you is correct. If you are interested in ultimate happiness you should follow my advice.”

Having thus advised the son of the brahmana, the devoted wife fell silent.

Devasharman then said to Savitri, “O blessed lady, please forgive me for the harm I have done to you by looking at you in anger. You have told me what is good for me. O righteous lady, after returning to take care of my mother, what duties shall I perform to attain the supreme goal?”

TRIDANDI SANNYASA

The devoted wife Savitri replied, “Listen carefully. I shall now tell you the duties that you have to perform. You should maintain your mother by begging, and you should also perform the prescribed atonement for the sin of killing the two birds.

“In the land of Kosala there is a girl born in a brahmana family who is destined to be your wife. When you return home her father will offer her to you. You should accept her at that time. She will give birth to a baby boy who will perpetuate your family.

punar-mrtayam bharyayam bhavita tvam tridandakah sa yaty asrama dharmena yathoktyanusthitena ca narasimha-prasadena vaisnavam padapapsyasi

“With the passing away of your wife you should take up the order of tridandi-sannyasa. Provided you sincerely follow the disciplines of the sannyasa asrama, then by the grace of Lord Narasimhadev you will certainly attain the abode of Lord Vishnu.

“Because you have inquired from me I have prophesized all of these things.

If you do not have faith in my words then you may do as you like.”

The brahmana Devasharman said, “O devoted wife, I will immediately return to take care of my mother. O auspicious one, when I reach there I will do everything according to your advice.”

Having said this, Devasharman at once started for his home. There, free from anger and delusion, he maintained his mother with all care. He got married and was blessed with a son. When his wife passed away he took up the life of a wandering mendicant. He treated pebbles, stones, and gold on an equal level and by the grace of Lord Narasimhadev he attained the spiritual abode of the Lord.

One may ask how it was that the brahmacari was obliged to maintain his aged mother? Since he had devoted himself to religious pursuits and was strictly following the vows of brahmacarya, would he not be free from this obligation as per the following injunction of Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.41?

devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitnam na kinkaro nayam rni ca rajan sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam gato mukundam parihrtya kartam

“Anyone who has completely given up all worldly relationships and has taken absolute shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord, who gives us salvation and who alone is fit to be taken shelter of, is no longer a debtor or servant of anyone, including the demigods, forefathers, sages, other living entities, relatives, and members of human society.”

It should be noted, however, that this injunction of the Bhagavatam applies only to those persons who have taken full shelter of the Lord. Although the brahmacari Devasharman appeared to be living a highly pious life, his activities were still on the material platform. His objective was material piety through performing religious activities and visiting places of pilgrimage. He had not left home in pursuit of the Supreme Lord, nor had he sought out the association of transcendentalists, nor had he taken shelter of a bonafide spiritual master. Although he considered himself to be free from obligations to this world, because his pursuits were only external it was improper for him to abandon his religious mother.

Since his activities were still on the material platform, the only fruit he received from them was an increase in his false prestige. This pride developed into anger, which then impelled him to kill the two birds.

Devasharman had some faith in pious religious activities, thus he had karma-adhikara, or qualification for acting according to the Vedic system of religiosity. But he did not have faith in surrendering to the Lord, thus he was devoid of bhakti-adhikara, or qualification for performing krsna-bhakti.

If those possessing karma-adhikara do not follow the principles of varnasrama-dharma then they become implicated in sin. For this reason the chaste and omniscient housewife advised him to return home.

Krishna has instructed Uddhava (Bhag. 11.20.9):

tavat karmani kurvita na nirvidyeta yavata mat-katha-sravanadau va sraddha yavan na jayate

“As long as one is not detached from fruitive activity and material enjoyment, and as long as one has no faith in devotion to Krishna, beginning with the process of hearing and chanting His glories, one has to act according to the religious principles of karma or varnasrama.”

In the next chapter of the eleventh canto Krishna again says (11.21.2):

sve sve ‘dhikare ya nistha sa gunah parikirtitah viparyayas tu dosah syad ubhayor esa niscayah

“Being fixed in the position for which one is qualified is virtuous. The opposite, accepting a position for which one is unqualified, is irresponsible and is considered impious. This is the definite conclusion.”

By acting according to his position in the Vedic system of varnasrama dharma, Devasharman gradually developed genuine detachment. He then took to the order of sannyasa and in the end achieved the spiritual abode of the Lord.

Seven hundred plates of free prasadam (food offered to the Lord) were distributed to an appreciative public and to 50 devotees who took part in a central city Harinam (chanting in the streets).

SABHUDANA CUTLET WITH COCONUT CHUTNEY
Ingredients:
Sabhudana - Tapioca - 1/2 Kg.
Curry leaves 4 leaves
Green Chillies 3 to 4 finely chopped
Coriander leaves for garnish
Peanuts 50 gms. (Powder)
Lemon Juice 1
Black pepper powder 1 Tsp.
Salt to taste
Oil for Frying
Potatoes _ 4 big size (boiled & mashed)

Wash Sabudana and soak in water for one hour. Drain for one hour. In a bowl add sabudana and add all the ingredients. Make a dough.
Make small balls from the dough. Deep Fry.

For Chutney (Coconut) :
Ingredients :
Green Chillies 6 - 7
Coconut 1
Green corriander 1/2 bunch
Cumin seed 1 Tsp.
Lemon Juice 2
Add salt to taste

In a mixie add chopped coconut & all the other Ingredients. Transfer it in a bowl.

For Teadka :
In a small pan add 1 tsp oil & then add 1 tsp mustard seeds, when mustard seeds began to crackle add 2 to 3 curry leaves, then garnish this tadka over chutney.

SABHUDANA POHA
Ingredients :
Sabhudana 1/2 Kg.
Green Chillies 2 to 3 finely chopped
Curry leaves 4
Green Coriander leaves for garnishing
Peanuts 1 Tsp.
Mustard seeds 1 Tsp.
Lemon 1
Salt to taste
Oil 1 Tbsp.
Black Pepper Powder 1 Tsp.

Wash Sabhudana. In a kadhai add oil then add mustard seeds, when it begins to crackle add curry leaves, Green Chillies & peanuts then add Sabhudana. Stir well then add salt & Lemon Juice, Black Pepper Powder. Garnish with green corriander. Serve Hot

KELE KI SABZI
Ingredients:
2 Bananas (raw - green), peeled & diced
1 teaspoon Ajwain (Thymol seeds)
1/4 cup (60 gms.) Oil
2 Sabut lal mirch (whole red chillies)
2 teaspoons Sendha namak (Rock salt)
1 teaspoon Lemon juice

Heat oil in a heavy based pan, add ajwain and lal mirch. Once mirch darkens a bit, add banana and turn around over high flame till all the pieces are coated with oil.

Lower heat, add salt, let cook, covered, till tender. Should press easily with back of spoon.

Mix in lemon juice and serve garnished with hara dhania.

ALOO BONDA
Ingredients:
500 Gms (3 cups) Potatoes, boiled, peeled and cubed
2 Tea spoons (30 Gms) Oil
1 Tea spoon Ajwain (Thymol seeds)
1 Sprig Kadhi Patta (curry leaves)
2 Tea Spoons Sendha namak (rock salt)
2 Green chillies, chopped fine
2 Tea spoons Hara dhania (green conrainder), chopped
1 Tea spoon Lemon juice

For the batter
1 cup (120 Gms) Singhare ka atta (Waterchestnut flour)
2 Tea spoons (Rock salt)
Oil for deep frying

Heat 2 tea spoon oil, add ajwain and kadhi patta, saute over high flame till they darken a bit.

Add potatoes and turn around till well mixed. REmove pan from flame, add salt, chillies, hara dhania and lemon juice.

When cool enough to handle, shape mixture into walnut sized balls.

For the batter, mix atta and salt together, add enough water to make a batter of pouring consistency.

Heat the opil, to point when a drop of batter comes up at once. Dip potato balls into batter, and drop into the hot oil. Fry to a light brown, remove from oil and drain on absorbent paper.

When ready to serve, fry once again in hot oil, over high flame to a golden brown and serve with green chutney.

GUJARATI KADHI
Ingredients:
2 cups (400 Gms.) Dahi (yoghurt)
2 tea spoon Singhare ka atta (waterchestnut flour)
2 cups Water
1 tea spoon Sendha namak (rock salt)
1 tea spoon Chilli powder
1/4 tea spoon Daalchini (cinnamon) powdered
2-3 tea spoon Sugar
2 tea spoon Oil
2 tea spoon Zeera (cumin seeds)
1 sprig Kadhi patta (curry leaves)
3-4 Sabut lal mirch (whole red chillies)
2 tea spoon Hara dhania (green coriander), choipped

Beat the dahi and atta together till smooth.

Add salt, chilli powder, daalchini, sugar and water, mix well.

In a heavy based pan, heat the oil, add zeera, kadhi patta and sabut lal mirch.

When zeera splutters, add the dahi mixture, increase flame and bring to a boil. Leave to simmer for about 15-20 minutes.

Serve hot, garnished with hara dhania.

Sweet Kachori

Ingredients:
For filling:
200 gms. khoya
50 gms milk powder
1/2 tsp.nutmeg-cardomom-cinnamon powder

For syrup:
250 gms. sugar
1 cup water
1 big pinch saffron

For pastry cover:
250 gms. plain flour
1 tbsp. cornflour
30 gms. ghee

Ghee for deep frying

Method

Mix ingredients for filling. The mixture should be soft and crumbly.
Mix ingredients for cover. Using water knead to a pliable dough.
Cover with a wet cloth. Keep aside
Boil sugar and water adding a tbsp. of milk to clear the syrup.
Boil till the syrup is slightly sticky between the fingers.
Strain. Crush and add the saffron. Keep aside.
Make 15 to 16 flattish balls of the mixture.
Divide dough also into 15 to 16 parts.
Roll one part into a puri, place one mixture ball in the centre.
Pull up all the sides to seal the mixture and press in centre.
Make 5 to 6 such kachoris, heat ghee and fry on low flame till light brown, turning once.
Repeat for remaining kachoris.
When slightly cool, make a hole in the centre of each (approx. 2cm. diameter).
Pour about half tbsp. of syrup and roll kachori around to let the syrup spread.
Allow to stand for half hour before serving. Note: The unsweetened kachoris may be stored without refrigeration for one week and sweetened as required .

Serves:15 helpings .
Time required:2 hr.
Shelf life: 10 days .

Pinnie (pindi)

Ingredients
250 gms. wheatflour
250 gms. ghee
250 gms. sugar ground
3-4 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. cardamom powder

Method

Melt ghee in a heavy pan.
Add, flour and cook on med/low flame.
Stir continuously, till med. brown.
When aroma exudes, and properly browned, take off fire.
Spread in a large plate.
Cool till a shade above room temperature.
Sprinkle cardamom powder and sugar.
Mix well. Sprinkle milk.
Mix again and form tight fist shaped pinnies.
This is done by taking some mixture and pressing in the fist.
Making time: 30 minutes
Makes: 23-25 pieces

Shelflife: 2 weeks or more (yeah right not around our house)

Note: The name pinnie (pindi) comes from its fist shape with the finger markings. You may add chopped nuts like almonds, etc. if you like. Variations: Urad pinnies may be made by using urad dal flour instead of wheatflour. Also add 100 gms. khoya.

FOR YOUR INTEREST: This one is not a joke but I thought you might like to know. These are the names of Lord Caitanya taken from the book "Sri Caitanya Sahasra Nama Stotra", i.e. "A Thousand Names of Lord Caitanya" by Srila Kavi Karnapura (as translated by HG Kusakratha Prabhu from the Krsna Institute)...

A pretty woman was serving a life sentence in prison. Angry and resentful about her situation, she had decided that she would rather die than to live another year in prison. Over the years she had become good friends with one of the prison caretakers.
 
His job, among others, was to bury those prisoners who died in a graveyard just outside the prison walls. When a prisoner died, the caretaker rang a bell, which was heard by everyone. The caretaker then got the body and put it in a casket. Next, he entered his office to fill out the death certificate before returning to the casket to nail the lid shut. Finally, he put the casket on a wagon to take it to the graveyard and bury it. Knowing this routine, the woman devised an escape plan and shared it with the caretaker. The next time the bell rang, the woman would leave her cell and sneak into the dark room where the coffins were kept. She would slip into the coffin with the dead body while  the  caretaker was filling out the death certificate. When the care-taker returned, he would nail the lid shut and take the coffin outside the prison  with the woman in the coffin along with the dead body. He would then bury the coffin. The woman knew there would be enough airfor her to  breathe until later in the evening when thecaretaker would return to  the graveyard under the cover of darkness,dig up the coffin, open it, and set her free. The caretaker was reluctant to go along with this plan,  but since he and the woman had become good friends over the years,  he agreed to do it. The woman waited several weeks before some-one in the prison died. She was asleep in her cell when she heard the death bell  ring. She got up, picked the lock of her cell, and slowly walked down the  hallway. She was nearly caught a couple of times. Her heart was beating fast. She opened the door to the darkened room where the  coffins were kept. Quietly in the dark, she found the coffin that  contained the dead body, carefully climbed into the coffin and pulled the  lid shut to wait for the caretaker to come and nail the lid  shut. Soon she heard footsteps and the pounding of the hammer  and nails. Even though she was very uncomfortable in the coffin with the  dead body, she knew that with each nail she was one step closer to freedom. The coffin was lifted onto the wagon and taken outside to  the graveyard. She could feel the coffin being lowered into the  ground. She didn't make a sound as the coffin hit the bottom of the  grave with  thud. Finally she heard the dirt dropping onto the top of the  wooden coffin, and she knew that it was only a matter of time until she would  be free at last. After several minutes of absolute silence, she began to laugh. She was free! She was free! Feeling curious, she decided to light a match to find out  the identity of the dead prisoner beside her. To her horror, she discovered that she  was lying next to the dead caretaker.

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?"

"May I talk with her?"

Again the small voice whispered,

"No."

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave! A message, the boss asked, "Is anybody else there?"

"Yes," whispered the child, "a policeman"

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, May I speak with the policeman?"

No, he's busy", whispered the child.

Busy doing what?"

"Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman," came the whispered answer.

Growing more worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, "What is that noise?"

"A helicopter" answered the whispering voice.

"What is going on there?" demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

Again, Whispering, the child answered, "The search team just landed the helicopter."

Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"
Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle: "ME."
